Mentally tired but very pleased with his work the lion climbed upon a ledge to watch the cubs. Surprising him the feeling that he was going to miss them when he had to return them home overcame him.
“Hey mister?” Neto startled from his thoughts and looked over to the cub next to him, his eyes bright and happy.
“Yes?”
“You never told us your name.”
“I suppose I didnt. They call me the the truth seer. The herald of truth, but also discord.” The lion looks down at the cub with a fond smile. “But my real name is Neto.”
“Thank you so much for bringing us here mister Neto. But why did you?”
“I wanted to make sure you guys were all being treated nicely little one.” The cub looked confused before looking over to Acia as if understanding. “But it wasn't just for completely selfless reasons.
I'm looking for a cub called Deva. Her mother-”
“Oh I know her!” The leopard froze in shock. There was no way, he’d talked to every cub here.
“Where is she?” The cub paused for a moment, the leopard had let a bit of fear into his voice, or perhaps it was anger.
“She’s really little, you turned her away cause she was too young to play.” Neto closed his eyes. The spell weakened, the unicorn set the cubs off her back.
“I'm sorry young ones, I have to bring this to a close sooner than expected.” Quite a few cubs protested but one sharp look and they filed up out of the hollow.
Just before the hollow sunk out of sight Acia looked back, but there wasn't a single thing to see. A single feather was all that's left, and a figure slipping out of sight.
Neto didnt wait around for very long as the cubs reunited with their pride. Acia bared her little teeth at one of her father's remarks and Neto smiled before slipping into the pride's territory.
Everyone was so busy with the cubs that only a few guards were left. Neto slipped past them, across the treetops until he leaped down to the nursing den.
He could smell a mother and cubs and quickly walked in ready to steal Deva and use her to blackmail Kina. But as the mother gasped, the names of her cubs given to the herald of truth Neto learned his mortal enemy wasnt her.
Not only was the one caring for Deva not Kina, fearing for her cubs safety, Deva’s other mother and caregiver had left while the prides defenses were low. The same time he snuck in.
Everything had been for nought.
Except, he thought of Acia as he strode forth, of the reforming bully, of cubs who learnt from him.
It hadn't been a waste.
But he still had to find his enemy. The prophecy about them could not be fulfilled. The harbinger of truth would not allow it. He needed to end Kina, and the only way to do so in a suitably harmful way was to end her cub too.
Nobody knew he was lying to himself.
