it's your first day as a trainer!
you're very excited, and you waste
no time getting down to the lab.
once you arrive, there's only one
pokemon that seems to catch
your interest...
it's a clumsy chikorita! ☆━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Beep. The alarm clock woke Sophie up from her dream. Blearily, she sat up in bed and glanced at the clock. It took about five seconds for her to remember why she had to wake up this early: Today was the day when she would finally be able to receive her first Pokemon, and she was late! After hurrying through her morning routine, Sophie bolted down the stairs, grabbed a piece of toast that her mother had left for her before leaving earlier in the morning, and rushed towards the nearby Pokemon laboratory.
"I'm...here..." she huffed, out of breath and collapsed onto her knees. Finally, she opened her eyes and saw that the lab was completely vacant of people - the scientists must have gone out for field research. Pokemon, though, were roaming around left and right. Among them included a group of Charmanders practising their fire attacks, a Treecko in the corner, and two Littens facing off against each other. Sophie didn't know which Pokemon to choose. Suddenly, a warm object collapsed against her back. Sophie whirled around to see a small Chikorita who was now sprawled across the marble floor, stars floating above its head. "...Are you okay?" Sophie asked softly, nudging the seemingly unmoving Pokemon. The leaf on its head snapped upright and its eyes opened. Appearing to realize that it was not the only one in the room, the Chikorita hurriedly attempted to get back on its feet with a sheepish expression. "Chi?" it asked, the leaf on its head forming into a question mark shape.
To Sophie, this encounter was love at first sight. Without warning, Sophie cradled the Pokemon in her arms and hugged it to her chest, the Chikorita nuzzling her instinctively. "You must be so clumsy that no one wants to play with you. Well, that doesn't matter anymore - you'll be safe with me. Now where's your Pokeball?" The Pokemon appeared to understand the last few words, as it shook its head and attempted to hop onto Sophie's shoulder, falling back to the marble floor each time. "I guess you don't have a Pokeba-Hey, that tickles!" she laughed. "At least let me get up first, you can ride on my shoulder after. I'm assuming you don't have a name, either?" Another shake of the head. Sophie thought about the matter for a few moments. "Hmm...Does Kari sound alright to you?" The Chikorita jumped up and down enthusiastically. "Chi!" it exclaimed happily. Sophie grinned at the newly named Kari and stood up, making sure to place her new Pokemon on her shoulder. "Well, Kari, I hope we can get along! Now what do you say we go out on an adventure?" "Chichi!" the Pokemon agreed.
Hurriedly scribbling a note for the professor so he would know where one of his Pokemon went, Sophie and Kari ventured out into the great unknown.
