Morag led the man to Westhaven. he puzzled her. he looked elvish, but not quite. she decided not to ask. she had never seen a dark elf, maybe this was what they looked like. before she knew it, they had arrived at the entrance. the light elf led the not-quite-elf to the great hall, where she dropped him off to see Avery. he looked hesitant.
"what's the hold up?" she said, her voice had a heavy elvish accent, which she took great pride in. to her it sounded just regular yet unique, but her companions compared it to a lazy french accent.
"i never caught your name." he protested.
"and? why do you need it?"
"i like knowing people's names before they drag me to see their leader." he said playfully. she rolled her eyes. sticking out his hand, he introduced himself, as if
that would make her tell him.
"my name is Elanjar Aegis, but most people just call me Aegis. i'm a half-elf." begrudgingly, she took his hand and shook it.
"Morag Witwood. a light elf, and a scout." his eyes lit up.
"hey me too!-" he started to say, but she cut him off, once she realized he was only stalling.
"just go inside." she grumbled, and she walked off, not really caring if she listened or not anymore.
Saban and Avery had found the girl while out on patrol. now that Avery had business to attend to, Saban was stuck with her. he looked down at her. trying to make small talk, he asked,
"you got a name?" he said, his voice more growly than he had intended. she bolted away, and he ran in pursuit. what an odd sight. a huge kitsune chasing after a young girl with a cat's head and tail, booking it to the forest. she halted and Saban caught up slightly winded. " don't do that kid." he said in between breaths. he looked up, as she walked away. she stopped at a cedar tree, pulled down one of the lowest branches, and plucked off some of the green leaf-like things. she handed it to him. "so kid, i asked, what is your name." she didn't respond, merely pointed to the bit of cedar in his paw. suddenly he understood. she didn't talk much at all. maybe she was trying to tell him. "what? tree? leaf? green? what?!?!" frustrated she threw her hands in the air. stalking to the tree, she pointed at herself, then the tree. it was a cedar tree. "ohhh, Cedar?" she nodded and he thought for a second his stomach was rumbling, but as she approached it got louder. was she,
purring? despite the odd situation, he laughed. he held out his paw and she grabbed it, and they walked back to Westhaven, hand in paw.
Ipuruak had just returned from another successful hunting patrol with Pema, and was feeling pretty good. he trotted back home, and wasn't halfway inside when he heard a knock at the door. it was Saban, but with him was a tiny teenage girl, with a cat head and a fluffy tail. her whiskers twitched. saban spoke up.
"Ipuruak, this is Cedar. i don't know why she isn't talking, is something wrong with her?" Saban sounded very worried, which was rather uncharacteristic of him. he shrugged, and the child, with a little prompting from Saban walked over. Cedar sat down in front of him.
"open your mouth please." he told Cedar. she obeyed without question, opening her jaws, revealing sharp little teeth. looking closely, he touched one gently. it was very loose. Cedar jerked back, and covered her muzzle with her hands. "does it hurt? is that why you won't talk?" she nodded. "then i'll have to take it out." she swallowed in fear, but gingerly opened her maw again. "Saban, please help. hold her head still, i don't want her jerking away and making it worse." he looked sincerely at her. "this'll hurt." he warned. Saban grabbed her head, and Ipuruak grabbed the tooth, and yanked hard. thankfully, it came out relatively easily, but it was bleeding a lot, and from the tears welling up in the corners of her eyes, it must have hurt like hell. he grabbed a clean cloth and used it to soak up the blood. turning to Saban he instructed him on what to do. "go outside and find some ice." the kitsune nodded and disappeared. seconds later, he returned with some ice. wrapping it i aother cloth, he held it to the side of her face where the tooth had been. "i'll need you to hold the ice there for a while okay? you'll need to stay here for a bit." she nodded. now they would just have to wait and see if it worked.
Finnega and Merrigan stood in the center of the square, each of them preforming their own little trick for the villagers. this was their way. Merrigan played with cards and finnegan juggled three rocks. suddenly a nymph wearing a long black cloak approached them. he grinned warmly.
"Greetings, welcome to Westhaven. I am told you wish to join our village. My name is Avery Warren, Westhaven's chieftain." Merrigan spoke for finnegan and herself before her brother said or did something stupid.
"Merrigan and Finnegan Moore, at your service. It is true we wish to join Westheaven, or whatever you called it." Finnegan leaned over and whispered in her ear.
"It's West
haven!" He whispered urgently.
"I mean Westhaven." She corrected. Avery simply smiled.
"No worries. Now, down to business. What are your roles?" He asked. This time finnegan spoke up.
"I'm a hunter, and my sister is a gatherer."
"Excellent! But, just a heads up, we call gatherers, foragers here." He warned the two twins. Brightening, he clapped his hands together. "Now, Merrigan was it? I want you to go with Jasan and Maryn here. They're both foragers as well, and can help you out. Finnegan, i'd like to introduce you to Rose and Pema. They can help you, seeing as you're all hunters. Aja would be here too, but she's expecting children at the moment. Now, if you'll excuse me, i must be going on patrol. This village won't run itself!" And with that the nymph hurried off, leaving the twins to go with their guides. Merrigan followed after the man and the satyr.
"Now, we'd figured we'll take you foraging right now to show you around, since we were going anyways, and we'll show you the ropes along the way!" The satyr said, as they walked along the path. Then, sticking out a hand, she introduced herself. "I'm Maryn."
Pema chatted idly with Aja, who was growing bored of doing nothing. After showing Finnegan around the village, Pema had come to talk with the pregnant woman.
"So... What's it like?"
"What's what like?"
"You know, lycanthropy. Being a werewolf."
"Oh that. I thought you meant-"
"oh no, no, no, no."
"Well, it's," Aja sighed. "It's hard to explain. It's a common beleif that were beasts only shift during the night of the full moon, but that's not true. We can change whenever we want, but we can't stop ourselves from changing at the full moon, and we're more wolfish, like we can't control ourselves, and instincts to kill kick in." She pondered this. She herself was an elf, not a werewolf. She didn't know what it was like. It was quite interesting, really, like being blind and having the world described to you. It was rather unusual though. She was jerked back to the present by Aja thinking out loud.
"I wonder what they'll be like."
"Who?"
"My kids. Will they be werewolf? Shapeshifter? A cross between the two?" She sighed and shook her head. Pema rested a hand on her knee.
"Whatever they are, i know that You, Jasan and the whole village will love them." The elf reassured her. Aja gave her a grateful look. Then at the sound of a knock at the door, Jasan entered, sitting down next to Aja, and Pema left to give them some space.
Returning from a scouting patrol, Morag noticed Maryn sitting alone on a bench. She sat down beside Maryn and saw the little satyr smile, causeing her to grin to. The two woman exchanged greetings and Maryn said,
"I heard you're getting promoted to lead scout! That's exciting, huh?" She nudged her friend. The light elf smiled modestly.
"Yeah, though i'm sure it's just because i've been around longer than Elanjar."
"Nonsense, Morag. You're the finest scout on this earth. You make Westhaven a better place!" Maryn insisted. Morag blushed. The little forager went on. "You should be proud of your acomplishments! You've earned your title!"
"You know Maryn? You're probably the nicest, sweetest person here." Now it was Maryn's turn to blush. After that, the two sat in silence, and Morag scooted closer. Maryn smiled, and the scout smiled back, her heart fluttered. She felt kinda awkward, with all the silence and asked, "hey Maryn?"
"Mm-hmm?"
"Do you mind if i ask you something... Personal?"
"Uhhhh, sure? It's nothing weird, right?"
"I don't think it is."
"Alright then, what's on your mind?" Morag swallowed nervously,
what id she said no? her words were hesitant to leave her mouth, but she forced herself to talk, despite her anxiousness.
"I've known you for what feels like forever, before Westhaven, and i love you, and i need to know," the words came tumbling out of her mouth now. "Will you be my wife?" She said quickly. Maryn's eyes lit up and she wrapped her arms around Morag's shoulders. Morag felt dizzy with relief.
"Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!" She said. Morag's whole world seemed to shrink only to fit the two of them and she spun Maryn around, her heart so light it must weigh less than air. She kissed the little satyr, so happy her heart could burst.
