I am not a dog owner, but I would like some advice on what to do about a situation.

Background: I live in a quiet, young-professional-dominated-type apartment complex. Most of my neighbors are grad students, professors, and a few young families. We are allowed small, quiet pets.
Some sweet undergraduate girls moved in a few doors down from me, and they brought a medium-sized (not still a puppy) dog with them. I know that my landlord makes exceptions and quite a few people here even own large dogs. I'm happy as long as they're happy and getting the exercise and attention they need, ya know?

WELL. This medium-sized doggy doesn't seem to be. It yelps and shrieks and scratches whenever people walk by the door. I am a full-time student and spend a lot of time in the complex studying. I now know exactly when anyone on my floor so much as opens their door, because it sets the poor dog off. I wrote it off as stress from the move, but it's been about three months now.

What should I do? I can speak privately with my landlord, but I'm afraid they'll just send an email that will be disregarded, because the girls aren't home enough to know how stressed the pup is. I also absolutely don't want my landlord making them get rid of the pet. Is it something that can be worked through/the dog will learn? I can absolutely keep earbuds in until it settles down if that's the case. I'm just worried it's in there unhappy all day, because I know that not all dogs are "apartment friendly." Should I passive-aggressively drop a pamphlet for doggy daycare services by their door? Really just lost here.

Thanks. I've been sitting on this a while.

Edit: I am non-confrontational and am not able to have a conversation with these women. I'm sorry.

to anyone getting a new dog, i would highly suggest this book: team dog. incredibly helpful for anyone who is just starting out in dog training and even as someone who has been training for years, i really enjoyed reading it!

No pointer (although he does point) or chow, but good guesses!

So far the only breed identified correctly has been German Shepherd, although he is mainly a different breed! Another person did guess that he is part hound, which is correct, although which breed remains a mystery! Any more guesses?

No, although that is a great guess! We actually thought he was a black mouth cur mix before we got his DNA tested.

Wowza what a Saturday! Bones and I went to a conformation show with a friend and he ended up winning best of breed! Over a champion male! This was a huge win for him, I am so beyond proud of him! Unfortunately I mixed up and we missed our ring today, so no repeat but he shows again next week with his breeder so fingers crossed

Hello!
I am excited to see this thread and all the resources it has to offer.
I do not currently own a dog. I do plan to get one in the distant future, two - five years from now.
I am planning on getting a pitbull terrier to be a companion, or "fur baby" might be a better term. I found a breeder in my state that breeds pitbulls for friendliness and health.
So I have plenty of time to learn everything I need to know about training a pitbull. I am all ears to anyone that might have some advice for me.

Pitbulls are one of the most likely dogs in shelters to be euthanized, including litter fulls of their healthy friendly puppies simply because of over population and lack of homes. Please consider going to a shelter or rescue instead. If all you want is a companion you won't have difficulty finding one. I don't mean to make you feel bad and I have nothing against responsible breeders, but please before you make a decision volunteer at a shelter/rescue and/or foster. In the end you may still decide to go to a breeder but at least you'll know what is available and it will give you great experience in dog training in general and pitbulls in particular.

As for training I recommend clicker training. Here are some videos to help you out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dbzPoB7AKk
