Stagstar frowned, thinking hard. The Windpack leader was trying to avoid the obvious, the inevitable truth. No... it can't be. Surely not... But the description matched only one dog. Bristlestar. He had been deputy while she was leader, and he couldn't have been more thankful. Working with Velvetstar sounded bad enough, but Bristlestar... One of the only things that kept Stagstar from hating Velvetstar was the fact that she probably saved the forest. "I think you might be talking about Bristlestar," Stagstar said hesitantly. Icy claws were gripping his lungs, making breathing feel impossible.
"She was the leader before Velvetstar, and Velvetstar's mother. I, thank Starpack, was appointed leader only after her demise. She was cruel, cutthroat, and, to simplify things, just plain evil. She was devising a plan with other outpackers to take the forest over. Velvetstar caught her, and they fought, killing both deputy and leader at once. Velvetstar was then appointed leader, and her very first act was to ban Riverpack and Skypack, believing that the outpackers belonged to them." He paused, remembering that horrific meeting, which was actually his first gathering as leader. He had voted to drive the two packs out of the forest, but looking back, he almost regretted the decision. Perhaps it hadn't been their fault. Maybe Riverpack and Skypack had nothing to do with it. Stagstar sighed, stuck in his own thoughts about those eventful months.
"Bristlestar, we can only assume, resides in the dark forest. I... I've been wanting to ask Velvetstar if she's heard anything from her mother. I worry that she continues to reach out to her, to other dogs, in hopes of continuing her quest to purge the forest of all but Shadowpack."

Dunlinfur
27 Moons
Aidi
WindPack
Medicine Dog
With Stagstar
Dunlinfur waited, searching Stagstar's face for hints of a reaction as the alpha considered all that Dunlinfur had shared. There was something akin to grave worry that did little to comfort the Aidi, who sat with a slightly cocked head, brow furrowed in concern. Seconds stretched into what felt like hours before an answer finally came.
"Bristlestar?" he echoed, committing the name to memory, matching it to the chilling, snarling monster of his dreams.
It sent a shudder down his pelt to recall such imagery, and Stagstar's elaboration only worsened the already-pessimistic prognosis. Bristlestar's reign had come and gone before Dunlinfur ever arrived at WindPack. He had heard stories, of course, but no one ever seemed to want to talk much about what happened. That made sense, considering how bad things had apparently been. The brief synopsis Stagstar offered did fill in several gaps, but Dunlinfur had a feeling there were a lot of details he was still missing, and he was unsure as to whether he really wanted to know them at all.
"Then I don't suppose that run-in with ShadowPack yesterday has helped much...", Dunlinfur sighed. "But whatta we do 'bout it? A dream, -even a dream from StarPack- ain't proof of anything, and we don't have many details either way. It don't sit right to do nothin', but..."
He suddenly felt so helpless, with such an ominous, impending warning and not a clue as to how to keep his pack from being destroyed. If only this were as simple to fix as a bellyache or a bite wound.

Stagstar smiled grimly, knowing a clear, easy solution to solving the matter, though it would have to wait a few days. "The gathering is coming up. Soon, very soon. When you meet with the other medicine dogs, tell them everything that you dreamed about, and ask them if they think they've had any warning from Starpack as well. If Bristlestar is stirring up trouble, it isn't only Windpack that is at stake." He stirred the soil with his paws, thinking, before realizing something. The medicine dog meetings at the Moon rock, of course! Windpack hasn't been going much. Perhaps Dunlinfur will be more willing now that he believes that Starpack truly exists.
"One other thing you could do," he said calmly, looking the Aidi straight in the eyes. "Is you could, at the gathering, schedule the next Moon-rock visit. Windpack hasn't gone in many moons now, and I don't blame you for that, but it's been far too long. I don't know whether the other packs have been going either, but with that warning from Starpack, we should be. It used to be that every half moon the medicine dogs and their apprentices would travel to the Moon-rock, and they all would get a vision from Starpack, then they would discuss it." He thought pack to his time as deputy, when their medicine dog at the time would go. She always said that Shadowpack never showed up. "We need stronger ties to Starpack right now, and a stronger shield against the dark forest."

Dunlinfur
27 Moons
Aidi
WindPack
Medicine Dog
With Stagstar
Glad for the guidance, Dunlinfur listened patiently to Stagstar's plan. While the medicine dog was still too overwhelmed with emotion to formulate a coherent plan, Stagstar already knew exactly what to do. It was admirable, for one thing, and inspiring, for another. He nodded in agreement to the idea of speaking with the other packs' medicine dogs at the upcoming gathering. It was something Dunlinfur had hoped to do anyway, but these new developments gave him twice the purpose. Before he could speak on the matter, however, Stagstar seemed to have come up with something even better: a moon-rock visit.
"I suppose it has been awhile..." he admitted sheepishly.
Dunlinfur had only actually gone once before, and only as a formality. Until today, he had felt his skills were better put to use actually healing his packmates, and not off on a wild goose chase. Now, however, things could be different. Maybe taking the lead to organize the other medicine dogs was what StarPack had meant by being more open towards them.
"Right. I'll get everyone together at the gathering fer a trip to the moon-rock, an' see what I can learn in the mean time until we can have our own meeting to discuss more openly."
With these requests giving him an outlet for the feelings of foreboding and confusion welling up within him, Dunlinfur already felt more confident. Having a plan helped quite a bit.

Stagstar stretched, and with a small smile, turned to the Aidi. "Well, I suppose that's settled. Now, let's not waste away this beautiful day. The sun's calling me out into it's light, and I believe that I'm not alone in the need for fresh air." Stagstar stepped out of his den, and breathed in the beautiful freshness of New-Leaf. The sun warmed his pelt, and he couldn't help but sigh in relief. The Windpack leader always felt that his den was far too small and stuffy.

Dunlinfur
27 Moons
Aidi
WindPack
Medicine Dog
Mentoring Deerpaw
With Stagstar
Dunlinfur backed out of the leader's den and side-stepped to make room for Stagstar to exit unhindered. The alpha had a point. The morning glow of sunlight was somehow even more warm and golden than usual. Even with ominous warnings hovering about, everything seemed so terribly peaceful.
"I have plans with Deerpaw, anyway. Off to gather some wool, I think. Best be off."
Dunlinfur nodded a farewell to Stagstar and took a few steps further into camp before looking over his shoulder and allowing his tail tip to sway in a gentle wag. His eyes glowed with warmth and gratitude.
"And thanks."
With that, Dunlinfur gave a quick glance around to check where Deerpaw had gone off to. His last memories of his apprentice's location were near the prey pile, but it seemed he had moved from that spot during Dunlinfur's conversation with Stagstar. Perhaps he would try the medicine den.

Her smile faltered as she recognized a questioning annoyance in Songbreeze's expression. She inhaled lightly to compose herself, still a bit shaken up by her dream, and, once the crowd cleared, she trotted up to the fellow moor runner. Offering her a gentle wag of her fluffy tail, she said quickly, "I know I'm late - I'm really sorry! I guess I overslept." Her smile grew, but it bore more resignation than even a smaller one, indicating how forced it truly was. "I've been doing that a lot more, recently..." Spoken aloud, the news sounded graver. I'll have to talk to Dunlinfur, but not before I make up for sleeping in to Songbreeze. Chuckling softly, she asked, "So, um, are we still up for investigating what the pups saw, or...?"

He listened to the newly made deputy, not really knowing what he could say "eh? So we just wait and see what's going to happen or what Stagstar decides?" he said with a sigh, "I think we could investigate little more, it's looked like a large operation there, who knows when it will reach to our lands?" he said.

She looked over to Deerpaw, before going to her brother and Gorsefoot "so are you talking about the thing we saw last night?" she asked looking over to the two dogs.

Songbreeze sighed, but gave her a small smile anyways. "Yes, I think we still are. Do you want to get going, or what?" The young moor-runner, despite her grudges on going to investigate some idiotic piece of two apprentice's imagination, still knew she would enjoy herself. She had, after all, pretty much grown up alongside Cloudtuft. And this might be interesting. Maybe I'll manage to catch something besides hares...

G O R S E F O O T♂ | unknown mongrel | beta of windpack | 35 moons | location: camp | tags: Patchpaw, Spottedpaw Gorsefoot frowned, the apprentice clearly wasn't listening to him. But really, now that he was beta, did he really have to send them to Stagstar for permission? This was big, but he could easily tell Stagstar what was happening and if the leader had a problem with it, they could always send a patrol off to fetch them. Patchpaw also had a point, Skypack bordered Windpack, it was likely that whatever was in their land could potentially decide to move on to Windpack's. It bothered him to admit the young male was right, but it was indisputable.
"I see what you mean. Well, Cloudtuft and Soundbreeze were planning on going out to patrol any moment now, so if you'd like to head out with them, that would be fine. Though please, stay with Cloudtuft and Songbreeze."The mutt's attention turned to Spottedpaw as she spoke and he spoke once more.
"Yes, we were. I was just saying that if you and your brother would like to head with Songbreeze and Cloudtuft, I would be fine with that."
