If there is no list of pets that are considered more valuable than their tags then the status of a "high list" pet will fade and demand fluctuates enough that people trying to follow it will get fed up quickly. I don't love the idea but maybe it could be possible to turn CS trading into something more shallow so that not every trade becomes a research project.

I see, kind of like a guild of users who agree to trade by only considering looks and not demand or rarity. Not something I'd sign up for but there might be interest from other users.

i feel like that'd only work if everybody does it, and that's simply impossible.

there'd probably be some users taking advantage of that too, getting "valuable" pets for cheap knowing the other person only trades for looks, and the trade them again for massive profit.

Yeah that'd be my concern as well. It'd only work amongst good friends or people who really trust each other.

And it still doesn't solve the issue of demand. There's a lot of pets that are universally likes and certainly not enough of them to go around.
Similarly what happens with pets that are largely disliked, such as rats? How are those who largely have low demand collections supposed to achieve the pets they want if nobody likes the look of the pets they're offering?
It would eventually boil down to people trying to trade for those pets universally loved to get whatever the most popular pet is - because let's face it, many people do not care about the pets look like to this degree - and not to be funny but hmm, where have we seem this before?

Yes, I don't think it's sustainable either.

But should we even do something? Maybe the currently crumbling economy can fix itself with time? How many people will have left by then, taking their collections out of circulation with them? What if it doesn't fix itself and just gets worse?

I have no idea how to attempt to fix it and there's obvious flaws with all the suggestions I've brought so far so let's hear what ideas others have.

Honestly sometimes I wonder how the demand/popularity and subsequent value of some pets would be doing if there wasn't such a deeply ingrained mindset about them being worth less.
Take the Grinners and the Sept 08 cake dogs, for example. They've been on the receiving end of being called low demand pets for so long, and as a result became some of the most hard to trade off list pets despite being dogs.
And it's so weird because there's objectively nothing that stands out about them that'd make them candidates for being particularly disliked.
A lot of people don't like spiders and rats because they don't like them IRL either, so I kiiinda get that? But these dogs were always some of those pets that I feel ended up going for lower values in large part simply because of their reputation for low demand, rather than because their designs are actually disliked so much.

Honestly sometimes trading off difficult pets has a lot to do with patience. Overpaying for stuff, or taking underpay, is often the quickest way of getting what you want. But it can really pay off to actually take the time to find the right type of trading partner who is willing to work with the price you're envisioning for a pet.
There's rat collectors out there who will pay you a fair price. There's someone out there who thinks the cake dogs are the cutest and worth every penny. Someone out there is looking for the pets you have and has the ones you need.
Maybe it'll take you a few weeks or months to get the deal, but if you aren't planning on going anywhere, then neither are your goals.

I don't really have any suggestions because personally I don't think demand is killing CS. Old things becoming rarer and harder to get is the natural course of every game where you have an inventory.

(What's really killing CS is the lack of updates and the things you can do on the site hasn't changed much since inception. Other games have a variety of ways to grind to get rich. On CS, the only way to do that is by trading or through art, occasionally through events. Unfortunately not everyone is good at art, and trading can be slow) but this is off topic, sorry for the digression

That's really sweet and inspirational and it's also kind of what I was thinking when I first proposed my idea of ignoring the status of pets in trading and going by rarity tags alone.

Personally I find rats cute (depending on their designs, some of the higher value main list rats are garish in my very humble opinion) and one or two of the grinner colours are pretty. I recently introduced my niece (I'm not -that- old lol) to this website and she's indiscriminately in love with pretty colours regardless of what lineart they're on. Watching her raw joy about things just being pretty really made me enjoy this place more than nickel and dime'ing my lists to get more hoard pets ever has.

see my main issue at the moment is that pets are essentially being traded for a lot more than they would theoretically be worth and whilst that's all well and good if you're on the high demand side, if you're trying to obtain that pet it's an absolute nightmare. i'm lucky enough to have completed my goal on cs but there's a lot of people out there who, despite having the means to get and even technically overpay for a pet, they are disregarded because they're not always the ones who can overpay "the most". cs has essentially turned into a site-wide auction for the highest demand pets over these last few years and the list being discontinued definitely sped the whole thing up to somewhat of a breaking point i feel. it's more noticable. all i can say is that, again, i think there's a chance that if we push true rarities into the mainstream it'll at least let people make more informed choices about the pets they're trading with, if not fix the broken system. baby steps.

The thing is there's really no incentive for users to not take as much as they can for their high demand pets, to get as far as they can to achieve their dreams and goals. A site wide auction is a fitting name for the current system as it is. Overall I agree that pushing the rarity only list will help in the right direction
