The smaller warrior just shrugged off his teasing. Though his passing did strike a nerve in her and she nipped at his heels. “Stop treating me like an omega. I’m a warrior just like you so you don’t have to tiptoe like that. My legs may be short but my body is the same size as yours.” She said with her ears back a bit. “I even have an apprentice. So they must think I’m a good warrior.” She said before looking forwards with a bit of a frown, saying it more to herself than Frostfall

Frostfall tried to sidestep her nipping. "Clearly by 'good' you mean talent, and not kindness. I don't think I'll have much luck hunting if you cripple me when we've barely left camp. Though I suppose I could learn to slither on my belly like a snake." And absurd image of him dragging his body over the ground entered his head. He imagined one's belly would be caked with dirt and burrs after doing that for a while.
Recalling his intended task, he snapped his jaws shut and pushed the ridiculous thoughts away. Once they were a fair distance from camp, prey would be around. But if he was still chattering like a magpie, it would all be scared off. Irrationally, he found himself wishing that he had left camp alone as originally intended, for the simple reason that he was talking too much.
A squirrel chattered overhead, alerting potential prey to their presence. Frostfall recalled the times squirrels had thrown nuts down at potential threats, and wished he had paws for grasping things so he could fling a stone at the creature and knock it from the tree. Then he could pounce on it and kill it, silencing the alarm cry and providing food for the pack. Instead, he settled for giving the squirrel an irritated look and continuing on his way.

Dappleheart just feigned ignorance at his accusation and grew quiet as well, keeping her ears on swivels as she listened in for any prey. The squirrels mostly ignored her, a mistake when she managed to chase them up trees. “Clearing.” She said quietly as she began to creep forwards, her limp making her hop a bit more than she’d like but she was careful with her paws.

Frostfall's eyes momentarily flicked towards her limp, then returned to the prey. He carefully circled around to approach the squirrel from the other side. If the squirrel fled from one dog, he thought, it would likely run right into the other. He crept closer while the squirrel continued to forage for fallen food on the ground, oblivious to its peril. He longed to close his jaws on the animal's body, but he had to be patient, and edge a bit closer.

Noticing his target, Dappleheart managed to get around so the furry tailed rodent was between them. Creeping forwards as well, she gaged the distance before decided he had the better chance at catching it and pouncing forwards, stepping on its tail and slowing it down enough to make it easier for him to catch it up in his jaws as it turned to run towards him in a blind panic.

As the squirrel dashed towards him, eyes panicked, Frostfall lunged forwards and grabbed it. It squealed as teeth closed around its body, then became limp as Frostfall shook it violently. He dropped the squirrel, then examined it to be sure it was dead.
"We should bury it for now. We can get it on our way back to camp." he said, turning to begin digging.

Dappleheart nodded and found a stick to mark the spot so they’d not loose where they buried it, leaving the digging to him since she wouldn’t be much help. As he dug she stood guard, keeping alert to the sounds and smells around her.

The young apprentice blinked, surprised. Had he not heard her? Or maybe he didn't understand what you were saying amongst the ceaseless stuttering, moron. In a voice so quiet with timidity that it was hardly audible, she started, "W-well, I'm injured, so..." She trailed off, big ears perking at the sudden...compliment? Was it a compliment? It seemed more like general logic - it went without saying that he still had some stuff to learn if he hadn't been made a full medicine dog yet - but it felt...kind. No dog had reaffirmed her worth as a medicine dog since she'd passively been called "gifted" one moon into her training. Plus, if she was being honest, the prospect of returning to actual healing things, too, was especially tempting. It would represent a return to the only world she truly knew, even if it was only temporary. Right then, she didn't have the heart to refuse, regardless of her concerns. "Um...sure, I-I guess I can help...It's just p-puppy's play - right?" Although the comment was meant to be a joke, to lighten the tension she perceived between herself and the SkyPacker, her voice came out breathier and more hurried than she meant for it to. It annoyed her, probably more than it could've ever annoyed him. She nearly jerked, startled, when he talked again. "W-what, me?" The question was stupid, of course, considering that she was now the only other dog in the den, but it seemed perfectly reasonable in her foggy mind. A few moments passed before her pelt began to burn with embarrassment and she managed to stammer, "Right...u-um, Foxpaw."

Frostfall made a decent-sized hole while Dappleheart stood nearby, then dropped the squirrel in and covered it with dirt. Once it was buried, he turned to continue moving.
"We'll see what else we might find." he said, looking around for any prey or signs of prey.

At her comment about being injured, he held back a laugh. "You've been so adamant about me not helping you though," Azurepaw mused. It made sense to him though that she would make up excuses or not want to help him. Besides, he knew it was a long shot. Before he got his hopes up, she finally agreed and that caused his tail to wag with excitement. "Right, puppy's play," Azurepaw repeated with a grin. He noticed that she was still very anxious and jumpy, so he finally sat down to relax more. After getting her to help, he didn't want to scare her off. That would be the worst. As she answered his question, he murmured genuinely, "It's nice to meet you, Foxpaw. Especially now that we're on terms with each others' names."
