Bramblestream whined softly to the apprentice. "It's okay Reedpaw," she groaned. Though her body ached and exhaustion had quickly set in once she had laid down, Bramblestream felt fine. She had hoped the husky wouldn't have come to investigate but the turn of events left Bramblestream no other choice but to improvise. "I'm not dead yet," she sighed, barely keeping her eyes open. "You wouldn't slash the throat of an innocent dog, would you?" she asked the husky as she approached. This dog didn't seem unreasonable and would hopefully think for a moment long enough for Bramblestream to come up with a plan. Even if the husky came close enough to slice Bramblestream's throat, the spaniel didn't think she could fight back in enough time to save herself. There were two of them and only one Sky pack dog... But the injuries they had sustained and their lack of food would only slow them down. How on earth was she going to wiggle out of this?

She cocked her head at the young male. His fearful desperation caught her off guard, compelling her to reassure him, but she didn't. Instead, she replied, "Oh? Why not? I was under the impression that she has already passed." Nightfire did her best to subdue her reaction to the she-dog being alive, forcing herself not to sag, sigh, or widen her eyes too much when she spoke. Raising a brow, she quipped, "So you aren't dead after all. I'm not surprised." She couldn't stop the fur from bristling along her spine in response to Bramblestream blatantly trying to fool her again. Playing dead was one thing, but trying to take advantage of her guilt and sense of mercy was quite another - and if she seriously thought that she was stupid enough to fall for it, she'd gravely underestimated Nightfire. Peeling her lips back, she dove forward without warning, open jaws angled to bite down on the she-dog's neck. She didn't actually intend to kill her, but she did want to force the dog's instincts to kick in to expose her deception.

Her body tensed instinctively as the husky charged forward toward her neck. She scratched as much as she could with her front paws to gain purchase on the attacker but couldn't push away. "Get off of me," Bramblestream spat, twisting her head to attempt to catch the husky's one floppy ear. Pinned to the ground, she snapped wildly trying to grab hold of her attacker. Her jaws clamped and finally caught the soft tissue of the husky's ear. Although she doubted it would do much good, she ripped as hard as she could, a chunk of ear coming away in her jaws.

Her jaws closed forcefully around the smaller she-dog's neck. Knowing that she needed to really scare this dog, since she obviously couldn't be reasoned with, she bit down hard enough that her fangs ripped through the skin. Her jaws sank against a pulse, thrumming violently underneath while Bramblestream scrabbled at her in a panic. Despite how annoying this stranger was, it seemed unnecessary to sever that artery, as much as she seemed to be trying to tempt her to. Nightfire nearly flinched as the thrashing body below her caught her floppy ear with its jaws, ripping viciously. It stung sharply, and she noticed with a pang of irritation that Bramblestream's fang was tangled in a small patch of Nightfire's own, dark fur, a bit of bloody skin still attached. Using the leverage her deadly grip gave her, the beta lifted Bramblestream just off the ground by the throat and slammed her back down, her bones audibly pounding against the rough terrain. Then, she twisted her head around, swinging Bramblestream with it, and released mid-movement. The momentum sent Bramblestream careening into the cliff's face, flank-first. Licking away some of the blood dribbling over her chin, Nightfire growled, "You're awfully alive for a dying dog. If you have any sense left, you will stand up, now, and take that apprentice of yours up that cliff before I break your neck. You've wasted enough of my time." βοΈ

She didn't dare move when Creambloom addressed her, but she quickly whimpered a weak reply. "Y-yeah, I mean...I-I plan to. I'm a little lost, but sleep will, uh...fix that. Uh, that is, it will make me not-tired anymore so I can travel properly." She hated the sound of her own voice and she quickly clamped her mouth shut so she didn't have to hear it anymore. Her gaze lowered even farther to the ground, sheepishly, as she awaited the alpha's verdict. For an uncomfortable moment, she thought she felt another pair of eyes on her. She could see in the very edge of her vision that it was a young dog, though probably still older than her, but she couldn't look up to really examine them, nor did she want to.

The air knocked out of her, neck bloody, and head spinning, Bramblestream stood on her three good legs. Her breaths were ragged and labored as she assumed an aggressive position, head low and legs wide. Her docked tail stood straight and she barred her teeth viciously. "I have wasted your time," she snarled, the husky's blood dripping from her teeth. "We have traveled two days to find our apprentice. We have been beaten by a river, attacked by a bear, and thrown off a cliff," she huffed taking a long breath. "We would've been out of your fur long ago if you weren't so proud." Her anger barely concealed, she turned to face Reedpaw. "Get up the cliff and tell Froststar what has happened. Avoid the bear," she ordered, hackles raised and lips curled. She may as well have signed her own life away, being left alone with this maniac husky but she knew she'd never make it up the cliff, much less back to the pack. A growl rumbled in her throat as she turned to face the husky once again.

Bramblestream's last words, in addition to their connotation, caught Nightfire's attention. "No," growled Nightfire, "both of you, I said." She stood to her full height and started forward, but stopped midway as she realized any efforts to dominate her into submission would be futile. Even if she was intimidated, she'd never back down; she was far too stubborn. Oddly, the prospect of the apprentice leaving, of being alone with Bramblestream, was terrifying. It wasn't as if she was a threat to Nightfire, not anymore, with two considerable injuries and the size disadvantage. It was, as much as Nightfire hated to admit it, the realization that she'd be left with no excuse to not kill her. Why it bothered her so much, she didn't know - but she did know that it would never sit right with her. "Wait," she snapped, regarding Reedpaw, hoping to buy herself a little time to think. It didn't take long. Evidently, Bramblestream didn't respond to threats and violence in a logical way, so Nightfire would have to change her tactics. Forcing her tensed muscles to relax, she said, "You suggest throwing your life away for no good reason. It would be foolish, and I have little tolerance for such acts. I can escort you safely around this cliff - you and your apprentice. Then, you can both run off and tell your Pack whatever, until you're fully content." She hated the feeling that was rising in her as she recognized within herself an unfamiliar desperation. Pushing it away, she asked, forcefully, "Is that fair enough?"

Her ears flicked uncertainly at the husky's change in attitude. Although Bramblestream knew she was unlikely to make it back to River Pack territory alive with her wounds and the potential for infection, however the thought of Reedpaw's safety convinced her. Still, what about Foxpaw? They had come so far to be turned away so brutally. The spaniel didn't trust the husky. She couldn't believe that Foxpaw was dead. She wouldn't believe it. Bramblestream gathered herself and stood tall, no longer in such an aggressive stance. "That is fair," she replied thoughtfully. "But," she added. "If you make us leave without the body of our kin, River Pack will not be happy." She hoped the concealed threat would get the husky's attention and change her mind but she doubted anything would. It seemed this stranger was just as stubborn as Bramblestream. And that was saying a lot.

The black and white dog went through the forest, trying to move as silently as possible. It was a skill he had practiced since he was a pup, living as an outpacker. The dogs he stayed with in his youth taught him a good deal about hunting and other things needed to survive in the wild. He recalled one dog was a sighthound mix, a lanky creature who didn't expect a larger dog like him to move stealthily. Frostfall theorized that his determination to prove that dog wrong had played a good part in his level of skill. He recalled his pride at the outpacker's flabbergasted expression. Of course, another dog had greatly outdone Frostfall in hunting not long after, humbling him again.
Frostfall gave a slight shake of his head. He needed to focus. He had been letting his mind wander, which would do nothing to help him catch prey. In a curious twist, the reason his mind was elsewhere was boredom, because he hadn't seen much of anything. The animals were either nowhere, or far above his head. He found himself wishing he was an eagle. Then he could reach the tantalizing prey, and have something to bring back to camp.
He heard a twittering noise nearby, and froze. It was to his left. Slowly, he crept towards it. His bright blue eyes locked onto a few small birds, searching for food on the ground. They didn't provide much food, but it was better than nothing. And by this point, he was ready to come back to camp with a stink beetle if he could find one. Not really, he thought to himself with faint amusement. The taste would be in his mouth for an eternity. He made the mistake as a small puppy, and had been sick. He pawed at his mouth, lapped water, but nothing helped much.
To his great displeasure, one of the birds noticed him and gave an alarm cry. Frostfall promptly bunched his muscles and lunged. The birds were taking flight, but he leapt up and grabbed one in midair. He gave it a savage shake as it struggled, already wounded from his teeth. It became limp, and with satisfaction, he buried it. He could retrieve it later. The smell of blood would only alert any animals to his presence. He licked his jowls, trying to remove all traces of it. He wiped his muzzle on the grass for good measure, then continued moving. Hopefully, he would find something more. And bigger. That bird wasn't much more than a snack to some of the larger Packmates.

Reedpaw stood nervously by Bramblestream, tail between his legs, eyeing Nightfire fearfully. "Please, Bramblestream, let's go. Foxpaw is dead. She couldn't have made it past the river, bear, and cliff in one piece. Please," Reedpaw begged her, looking at her and at the cliff. Bramblestream wouldn't make it up the cliff if she stayed and fought for Foxpaw's body, and there was no way they could drag her up the cliff.

tags: frostfall He shook his head after watching Blackrose and the group of dogs for a while, finally deciding that he would go out to collect herbs. Azurepaw ventured into the forest and came to the familiar spot for poppy flowers, where he would pick them for poppy seeds. He really liked the bright red flowers but only looking at them. When he first became the medicine dog apprentice, he made the mistake of inhaling too deeply and fell asleep. Blackrose was really upset then! She could be really mean and strict at times, but he didn't mind. Azurepaw was sure that she had a positive side to her, but he just couldn't find it.
As he pulled some poppy seeds onto a maple leaf for transport, he noticed movement and picked his head up. It was only Frostfall, so he greeted him loudly and wagged his tail. "Good afternoon, Frostfall!"
