@silent - sounds good, perhaps she got lost as a kit and he brought her pack to more familiar ground and would meet him every once in a while before becoming an apprentice and was stuck in camp

think of him as a giant cloud of fluff that just wants a family, he doesn't like other dogs so cats it is
he can be like their work horse, digging out dens or carrying around stuff, perhaps he can find/steal a sled from some humans that he can pull around and carry stuff like a mule lol

He can know Ember too if you want. She lives in one of the homes bordering the clan. Before that she was exiled from the clan and lived on her own for a while before being taken in. Perhaps she knows him from that time or since then?

Also lol one of my dogs is named Beau.
