Katai Lionblood perched upon the gnarled branch of an elder acacia tree, grown limber and thin with age, angulated limbs
outsretched wide. A few branches above him a singular hornbill rested, large beak tucked under a speckled wing. Katai glar
ed, green eye narrowed. If he could silently maneuver his way to the bough above him, maybe he could have himself a dec
ent meal.
About damn time. Katai grumbled inwardly, careful not to speak aloud. These ancient lands are unforgiving, and they
did not offer mercy for any, even one who was the heir to the Kishenzi throne. His gods only offered peace to the dead- we
ll, at least some of the dead. As a lionblood, he was promised power, unlike any mortal follower, a gift given directly
from the gods. It was a title no other had held in many years, and it marked the rebirth of the Kishenzi Mwezi. His muscles
tensed in apprehension as he outstretched his limbs, clawing sinking into the bark of the tree, climbing silently upwards.
Katai watched as the hornbill's chest rose and fell with each breath, still tranquil while sleeping. The toned felid sized up th
e bird, his body wiggling slightly in anticipation.
"Trying to be a bird up there, dear?" A deep voice purred, rumbling with amusement.
The hornbil instantly stirred from it's slumber, and it flapped its wings together, rising from it's branch in a panic. Katai lung
ed, unsheathed claws stripping away skin as it tore into the bird. It's life was quickly over in a swift bite to the neck. Katai
held the bird in his jaws, eyes narrowed. "I was trying to kill a bird, not that you made it any easier." He snapped, gr
een eye looking down at the silver feline below him.
The cat shrugged, "Well, if it makes you feel any better, you looked rather handsome in action." He purred, offering th
e tom a coy smile.
Katai rolled his eyes before dropping down to a lower branch. "I knew that." He said quickly, flicking an ear with mild
irritation.
The rosetted male smiled, tail flicking calmly. "Yes, well, I thought that much."
"Really? I half expected you didn't think at all." Katai replied, his snark evident in his harsh tone. He let a silence drift
between them before speaking again. "What is your name?"
The tom spoke with a proud air to him, "I am Cobra Silverbell."
Katai gave a sudden, sharp nod. He had not heard of a cat with a surname in many moons, and it was one of the distinct signs
of a cat being of a Kishenzi member descent. He hesitated before speaking, his words calculated "I am Katai Lionblood, of
the Kishenzi Mwezi dynasty."

xxxxxxxRabbitear trailed behind the chatting queens. He understood that hunting took priority but sending him on a border patrol with two queens seemed like a slap in the face. He almost did get slapped in the face when he mentioned his concerns to Starlingsky and got told to “deal with it.” He cut back any more retorts in fear of his annoyance would be made clear to his mother. He was saved from listening to the chatter by a strange tom appearing in the distance. The queens’ fur automatically fluffed up and when they got close enough to see he had some scarring on the right side of his face, they were ready to kill. “Calm down,” Rabbitear felt like he was mothering his own mother. “Silverstem, it’s probably just a loner. A single rogue wouldn’t have just stayed behind.” Rabbitear was correct; the loner was wandering for a new new-leaf home. “Would you mind staying with a few more cats?” Rabbitear asked.
xxxxxxx“What, like three more?” Lazarus, what he introduced himself as, scoffed. He was surprised by the expanse of the cabin with cats sprawling sunbathing in the sun. Rabbitear smirked and led him to Sunchaser and Crowtalon in idle conversation.
xxxxxxx“Would you like a proper warrior name?” Sunchaser asked. He didn’t seem as pushy as Morningstar had been to all have uniform clan names. After Marsh refused a suffix and Shadow being her stubborn self, single names were spreading through the clan. Lazarus surprised them by relenting and Sunchaser had to rack his brain for a fitting name. While he was muttering combinations of possible names, Crowtalon hadn’t taken his eye off of Lazarus who in turn was eyeing him curiously. Crowtalon opened his mouth to perhaps actually introduce himself but Sunchaser cut him off with a triumphant “Eaglescreech!”
xxxxxxx“I can show you around camp.” Crowtalon offered with a sly smile.
xxxxxxx“It’s bigger than I thought it would be,” Eaglescreech took another look at the cabin. “I might get lost without a tour.” The two stalked off and Rabbitear caught Sunchaser’s eye.
xxxxxxx“It’s been a weird few days.” Rabbitear said.
xxxxxxx“It certainly hasn’t been normal.” Sunchaser said candidly. “But I think I could get used to naming cats. I’m already thinking about Tornadokit’s name and maybe Sanddu…” He stopped. “Oh.”
xxxxxxxRabbitear held his breath, he certainly wasn’t prepared to comfort the new leader with the death of his newborn kit. Don’t mention Rainsong, he wasn’t sure if he was telling himself or Sunchaser. “I’m sure Rainsong would be happy to give him a warrior name.” Oh, why did that come out of my mouth? Rabbitear scolded himself. Why, why, why, why, why did I say that!
xxxxxxx“I suppose she will,” Sunchaser’s eyes blinked out of focus. He was now trapped in the limbo of past memories.
xxxxxxx“See you around.” Rabbitear lamely ducked away. If Squirreltuft ever caught a whiff of this conversation, he would never live it down and he never wanted to relive it again.

xxxxxxx Darkmist laid beside Pavilla who was watching Somni and Nitor like a hawk. Ever since Sopor was taken, she didn’t let her two remaining kits out of her sight. She was dreading the next moon when they were assigned mentors and started their warrior training. Darkmist figured she could play into the fear Pavilla still harbored to bend her to her will. “What do you think about the whole poison thing?” Darkmist widened her eyes into what she hoped was an innocent expression. “Do you think they could be planning on doing it again?”
xxxxxxxShe got the reaction she wanted; Pavilla let out a soft squeak. “They wouldn’t harm little kits, do you think?” She simpered. “The attack on Twistedstar seemed personal and she was leader.”
xxxxxxxDarkmist shrugged. “I don’t know. I’m just glad I was entertaining Somni and Nitor at the time, so they didn’t see it.”
xxxxxxxPavilla scrunched her brow in thought. “I…I didn’t know you were playing with them then.”
xxxxxxxDarkmist doubled down. “Oh, yes. It wasn’t a problem at all. Somni even perfected the hunting crouch; she’s a natural.”
xxxxxxxPavilla hummed to herself still racking her brain. “Alright, I’m glad then.”

xxxxxxxLightningflash was used to stares ever since he was growing up. First it was because his ears were so comically large for his head, there would be comments about him being able to fly away with them. Then, cats noticed his long lanky legs and how he seemed to get tangled up and laughed at how ridiculous he looked. Now, they stared because they were jealous of his looks. He grew into his ears that stood at attention. He had an entire life to learn to glide on his feet without tripping. His coat was sleek and shiny, the few scars he had brought more attention to his spotting. But here, the stares weren’t for flirting or admiring, the stares were filled with distrust and apprehension. He lived with those rogues that attacked them, that ripped their families apart. He was one of the rogues that was present in the battle. It wasn’t if he would strike again, it was when because he was a strong, tall tom that has new and old battle scars. Robin, or Robinripple now, was having a slightly easier time. As a quieter molly, she was more approachable, especially missing an eye. She had that sympathy factor she could cash in on.
xxxxxxxWhen Starlingsky assigned him to her own hunting patrol, he looked forward to having some solo hunting time, the only eyes following him was the observant forest. “Sunchaser and I thought it would might be better to hunt in groups of two.” Starlingsky told the patrol. “With all the prey we lost, teams of two could bring back bigger catches, right?” So, Lightningflash was stuck with hunting with a dark tom called Thundercry. He didn’t seem particularly thrilled about this development either.
xxxxxxxThundercry didn’t acknowledge his companion, and Lightningflash had to clear his throat a few times before the tom would even spare him a second glance. He raised a brow and Lightningflash was flustered for one of the few times in his life. “Shouldn’t we be trying to work together?” He stammered.
xxxxxxx“I’m not working with you.” Thundercry spat.
xxxxxxx“I’m great at catching rabbits.” He offered lamely. “I’m quite fast.”
xxxxxxx“Why would I eat anything a murderer caught?” Thundercry hissed. “I don’t trust any of you.”
xxxxxxx“I…none of us poisoned Twistedstar.” Lightningflash insisted.
xxxxxxx“Not Twistedstar, moron, you rogues killed my mother and my sister.” And with that his long plume of a tail disappeared through a small section of bushes and by the time Lightningflash pushed through the leaves, he had vanished.

xxxxxxxOne of these cats assassinated Twistedstar, Sunchaser had climbed on top of the cabin’s roof and was now assessing each cat as they went about their daily business. And I need to get to the bottom of it before they strike again. Then a horrifying thought shot what felt like slivers of ice through his heart. What if I am targeted next? It would make sense and would even be easier to attack now before he received his nine lives.
xxxxxxxThe only solution to this would be to find the assassinator which was the first thing to do anyway. Sunchaser thought hard about the events that transpired before the poisoning. Twistedstar didn’t grab the deer herself, it was brought to her. Who had dragged it in front of her? Someone light-pelted, Sunchaser remembered, and that must have been Snowstorm. His first thought was that he had discovered the criminal, but it wouldn’t be that easy. He couldn’t imagine the gentle Snowstorm ever murdering someone, especially the leader.
xxxxxxxThat left the deer itself. Obviously the dead deer didn’t place the juicy poisonous berry in its own corpse, so who had originally caught the deer? It had been caught a while ago, he was sure, because the clan was saving the nice hunk of meat for bare-leaf when the prey turned scarce. If his memory served him correctly, the deer had been found and not hunted by a gaggle of apprentices. Was that batch Rainsong’s and Twistedstar’s kits or Silverstem’s kits? Could it have been Birchwhisker’s bunch right before they took their warrior assessments? He would have to question all of them to make sure.

xxxxxxx“Can I speak to you about my patrol assignment?” Lightningflash asked Starlingsky sheepishly. He had finally caught her alone; she was constantly busy it seemed, always talking to someone about patrols or training or who knows what? Lightningflash didn’t and he certainly wasn’t about to interrupt the clan cats and make them hate him more.
xxxxxxx“Yes?” Starlingsky couldn’t disguise her sigh of exasperation. It was clear she wanted to eat a meal alone and have some quiet time for once.
xxxxxxx“I was curious if I could change hunting duos. Or just do a border patrol instead. Or even just hunt alone.” Lightningflash didn’t like how annoyed the new deputy was looking at him.
xxxxxxx"Why?"
xxxxxxx“Well…Thundercry doesn’t like working with me, so we’re basically hunting alone anyway.” Lightningflash didn’t want to throw Thundercry under the ice, but he couldn’t think of another way to say it.
xxxxxxx“You are both adults fully capable of working through this without my help.” She huffed. “I’m not changing all the patrols because you two can’t get along. You are both TwistedClan warriors whether you like it or not, now let me eat dinner in peace.”

xxxxxxxFrostpaw woke up shaking and crying out. Wishpaw slipped in the den and curled up next to his friend. “Another nightmare?” He murmured while licking his head. Frostpaw shook his head. “Oh? What is it?”
xxxxxxx“A dream.” Frostpaw’s voice trembled.
xxxxxxx“Is that not a nightmare?” Wishpaw was not prepared to debate the differences of dreams and nightmares this early in the morning.
xxxxxxx“No.” Frostpaw was silent for a while, long enough for Wishpaw to clean his head and ears. “A dream is real.”
xxxxxxx“Dreams aren’t real.” Wishpaw scoffed. “You just had a bad dream, a nightmare.” Frostpaw shook his head again and glared at Wishpaw. “Okay, it happened.” Wishpaw quickly relented. “But what did happen?”
xxxxxxxFrostpaw closed his eyes. At first, Wishpaw thought he had fallen back to sleep. “A raven looked at me.”
xxxxxxx“Just looked at you? We do live in a forest, Frostpaw.” Wishpaw said calmly. “There’s birds all over.”
xxxxxxx“It flew at me.” And that’s all Frostpaw would say. Wishpaw groomed him until he fell back asleep.

xxxxxxx“I need to speak to you.” Sunchaser dragged Snowstorm out of camp. “You brought the deer to Twistedstar, didn’t you?”
xxxxxxxSnowstorm dipped his head down genuinely sad. “Yes, I did unfortunately. I wish I would have eaten the deer and taken something else to her.”
xxxxxxx“Why did you choose the deer?” Sunchaser asked. “It already had the poison; how do I know you didn’t plan it?”
xxxxxxx“I would never!” Snowstorm said offended. “You honestly think I would kill Twistedstar?”
xxxxxxx“No, but the evidence is against you.” Sunchaser pointed out. Riled up cats tended to say incriminating things.
xxxxxxx“Pavilla suggested the deer would be special piece of prey for her. I agreed, honest!”
xxxxxxx“Pavilla?” That was definitely another name Sunchaser was not expecting, though he would never think that someone would murder Twistedstar either.
xxxxxxx“She just had the idea, but I doubt she knew about the deathberry.” Snowstorm defended the queen. He couldn’t believe Pavilla could murder either.
xxxxxxx“I’ll talk to her, thank you.” Sunchaser dipped his head. “Though I share the same thoughts as you.”

xxxxxxxStarlingsky rolled her shoulders. Mallardwing, Thistlefur, and Tigerstrike were bringing their apprentices and joining her and Ashpaw’s training session later, but she wanted to be alone for the first half. Ashpaw was very angry at having to start training all over again. After another failed stalking, Starlingsky snapped, “I don’t care that you’re upset over losing your training sessions credit, you have to try!”
xxxxxxxAshpaw slashed her tail. “I’m not upset about that!” She spat back. “Marsh hasn’t come back and even Neritefang is worried about him.”
xxxxxxxStarlingsky was taken aback. “Marsh is gone?”
xxxxxxx“See, no one else cares! All they care about is Twistedstar but she’s dead! Marsh has vanished and you haven’t even looked for him.” Ashpaw stalked away but Starlingsky stopped her.
xxxxxxx“What do you mean Marsh vanished?” She had to hold down the wiggling apprentice that was almost as big as her. “When did you last see him?”
xxxxxxx“I don’t know, sometime last moon. I tried to bring it up to you guys, but all the focus was on Twistedstar and Sunchaser.” Ashpaw pouted. “Like, ‘oh no, Twistedstar is dead,’ but Marsh is still alive!”
xxxxxxx“We can send out a couple of patrols to see where he might have gone.” Starlingsky said gentler. It was sweet to see Ashpaw actually care about someone other than her and her littermates. “Thank you for bringing this to my attention.”
xxxxxxxAshpaw hated the attention on her now. “Whatever, just as long as we bring him back home.”

xxxxxxxSunchaser stepped inside the nursery and immediately noticed how empty it felt without Rainsong and Sandkit. “Pavilla.” He stood in the doorway hoping to call the queen outside. “May I have a word?”
xxxxxxx“Come back here to say hello to Tornadokit!” Pavilla called. “They’re all playing together back here anyway.”
xxxxxxxHe weighed the option of ducking back out but Silverstem came in with a mouse and forced him back towards the kits. “Daddy! Pavilla was telling us about mountains.” Tornadokit ran around his legs. “Can we go to the mountains?”
xxxxxxxSunchaser couldn’t bring himself to look at his daughter. “No, we live in the forest,” He said somewhat harshly. “I need to talk to Pavilla.”
xxxxxxx“We can talk here,” Pavilla invited him to sit beside her but he shook his head. “Alright, you kits stay with Silverstem.” She waited until they stepped out into the sun to scold him. “Tornadokit lost her mother and brother, she can’t lose her father too. We’ve been keeping her happy and entertained but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to visit and play with her.”
xxxxxxx“It’s just hard…”
xxxxxxx“You don’t think it’s hard for her?” Pavilla hissed. “You’re a full-grown adult, but she’s just a kit.”
xxxxxxx“I…I don’t…I’m sorry.” He stammered. What was he supposed to ask Pavilla about again? How did this turn into a lecture on his parenting skills? “I needed to ask you about the feast.” He said lamely. Some leader he would be if a simple queen could trip him up so.
xxxxxxx“What about it?”
xxxxxxx“Snowstorm said you suggested giving Twistedstar the deer to eat.”
xxxxxxx“You’re accusing me of poisoning Twistedstar now?” Pavilla’s voice shook with disgust. “How dare you!”
xxxxxxx“I…I’m just asking a question!”
xxxxxxx“That wasn’t a question!” Pavilla shrieked.
xxxxxxx“Did you suggest it, though?” Sunchaser wanted to crawl into a hole and never come back out.
xxxxxxx“Yeah, only because Darkmist mentioned the deer should be saved for someone special. Sorry if I thought Twistedstar deserved a special meal.” Pavilla turned back to the cabin. “Is that all?” Sunchaser nodded sheepishly. “If you need to accuse me of anything else, I’ll be in the nursery raising your daughter!”

xxxxxxxHollypaw was now training not with his littermates but with the inseparable Fogpaw and Mistpaw since their mentors were siblings. Hollypaw could barely look Stormheart in the eye; he knew he was very hurt that Hollypaw didn’t listen to his reasoning to guard the camp. He tried to ignore the sorrowful eyes of Stormheart and instead listened in to the mollies’ conversation. “Have you seen Pheasantpaw?” Fogpaw asked. “His little white spot on his nose, did you see it?”
xxxxxxx“He’s not cute, he’s evil.” Mistpaw wrinkled her nose. “Look at his sister, the rogues probably scratched her eye out themselves.”
xxxxxxx“I don’t think they’re evil.” Hollypaw tried to be the devil’s advocate. “Just living with unfortunate circumstances.”
xxxxxxx“They didn’t kill your siblings.” Mistpaw narrowed her eyes. “Of course, you think they’re nice.”
xxxxxxx“They’re only six moons, they didn’t fight or kill anyone.” Hollypaw said.
xxxxxxx“Well, you would know for sure if you were actually here.” Fogpaw said tail in air. “Too bad you weren’t.”
xxxxxxxAnd Hollypaw felt even worse.

xxxxxxxSunchaser followed a quiet Frostpaw with a wad of moss soaked in mouse bile back to the elder’s den. He wasn’t exactly sure why Frostpaw kept prodding him until he clambered to his feet, but he was sure it would be interesting. Fritillarystreak seemed to expect them both and Frostpaw got to work spotting the large tick stuck on a patch of her dark fur. Neritefang was off to the side with Featherpaw discussing his new training regime. “How are you doing today, Fritillarystreak?” Sunchaser kept trying to catch Frostpaw’s eye but the medicine cat apprentice was purposefully avoiding him. StarClan knows what he was supposed to be talking about.
xxxxxxx“Alright, luckily Featherpaw found this tick before it could get any bigger. I don’t think he found any on Neritefang.” She said.
xxxxxxx“I’m glad he took it upon himself for checking without being asked.” But this compliment only elicited a glare from the apprentice.
xxxxxxx“Of course, I do, I check every day.” Featherpaw said. “Too bad I can’t check on Marsh since he’s not here.”
xxxxxxx“Not here…where’s Marsh at?” Sunchaser looked around and finally realized the elder’s den was missing the oldest elder. They were interrupted by Starlingsky nervously trotting inside.
xxxxxxx“Ashpaw is right,” She muttered, “Marsh is gone.”
xxxxxxx“He’s been gone for a moon or so,” Fritillarystreak said, “It’s been rather quiet and boring around here.”
xxxxxxx“You…you should’ve told us!” Sunchaser exclaimed. How could they have just lost a clan member? “He’s gone?”
xxxxxxx“You were rather busy with clan changes.” Fritillarystreak glared at Neritefang who had her mouth open and fur bristling. “We checked but didn’t get to the very edges of the territory.”
xxxxxxxStarlingsky nodded to Sunchaser. “Yes, we’ll make sure to send a patrol to see if anything else is beyond the borders.” The tick fell off of Fritillarystreak and she stretched in relief.
xxxxxxx“Thank you, Frostpaw. It’s great to have you back.” The elder purred.
xxxxxxxFrostpaw rolled his eyes at Sunchaser. “You know Deathberries.” He said pointedly to Fritillarystreak.
xxxxxxx“Why yes, those berries are sneaky little things aren’t they?” She chuckled. “Through the years we lost many a kit to the curiosity of how juicy the red berry was. You thought that I’m going to usurp you as medicine cat now?” Fritillarystreak lightheartedly poked Frostpaw but he scooted backwards quickly, now looking at Sunchaser. “Don’t worry, love, I only warn others of their danger not push them towards one excluding Dexter.”
xxxxxxxAh, Sunchaser thought, Fritillarystreak is cleared. She would have been another possible suspect but Fritillarystreak had nothing to gain. He flashed a quick smile to Frostpaw who returned the thanks with a blink.

xxxxxxxSquirreltuft was enjoying a nice rabbit with Mousespeck when Sunchaser tapped him on the shoulder. “Mind if I join you?” He asked. The brothers looked at each other; some cats might be excited to share a rabbit with the leader of their clan, but they felt nothing good could come of this. But, there was no way to deny what was obviously not a question. Mousespeck shuffled to the left to give him room.
xxxxxxx“Good thing this isn’t deer.” Squirreltuft joked. Mousespeck gave him a look that clearly said, not the time, moron.
xxxxxxxLuckily Sunchaser found his joke to be a smooth segue into what he really wanted to discuss. “Were you the ones that originally brought that deer back.”
xxxxxxxMousespeck choked on his mouthful of rabbit. “I…I th…think so.”
xxxxxxx"Think or know?"
xxxxxxx“We did.” Squirreltuft sneakily stepped on Mousespeck’s tail. Let me do the talking. “It was a while ago.”
xxxxxxx“Don’t worry, I don’t think a deathberry miraculously grow in it.” Sunchaser said. “I just need all the details.”
xxxxxxx“We just found a dead deer. That’s it.” Squirreltuft shrugged.

Everything was going to be alright. Everything was going to be perfect. Petalsong needed to be comfortable, she needed to have good sleep, she needed to have fresh prey, and she needed to be able to relax. Buzzardshade had proven to be an ally, at least so far, keeping away from Raptorstar. The leader didn't care the reasons, as much as he was suspicious over Buzzard's intents, as all of his focus was on Petalsong. So much focus that he hardly even bothered to train his apprentice, taking care of problems in the territory only for Petalsong's sake, and the sake of their kits. The clan needed to be as safe as possible.

"You know you've already done enough for me," Petalsong remarked, exasperated as she watched Raptorstar stalk back and forth with various materials in his mouth, building an incredibly large and soft nest. Soft feathers, the smoothest moss he could find, and little colorful trinkets he had found in various monsters - leftover tidbits from the Twolegs to decorate the den. Things for the kits to play with, things for Petalsong to look at when she was bored. He even included a small area for water soaked moss, just in case Petalsong ever felt too tired to get out of her den to get to the fresh water.

Raptorstar shook his head, pacing back and forth, a common action for the leader in the past few moons. "I still have to add in something else for the kits to play with. What if there are a lot of them and you can't keep them entertained all the time? What if one of them wants to practice pouncing and your tail is sore? What if-" Petalsong shushed him by placing her tail over his mouth, her eyes wide.

"You're overworking yourself, and forgetting about your other duties. Go do something else for a while. I promise I'll be fine, and I know where Amberdawn's den is if I need someone." Raptor's eye blazed, and he opened his mouth around Petalsong's tail, getting a mouthful of fur but not caring. "Don't talk!" Petalsong growled, shaking her head. "Go train Crowpaw, or go take care of that beehive. Better yet, do both. You need to do something for the clan, though, not just me. I do appreciate all you've done though," she added, her voice softening. "I love you, but remember to take care of yourself too."

Head spinning, Raptorstar nodded. He did need to think about something other than Petalsong for a bit. His mind was consumed with the thoughts of kits. How many would there be? Would Petalsong be alright? Would his kits be alright? What if they only had one eye like him? What if-

No. He couldn't think about that right now. Petalsong was right; he was worrying too much. He needed to do something else for a while, and he'd come back to building Petalsong the perfect den later. His clan did need his attention, and he didn't want the wrath of Starclan coming down on him once again.

"What are we going to be doing today?" Crowpaw asked softly, her eyes alert as she looked down the highway. Most patrols didn't come this way, the angry buzzing of a beehive keeping them away.

Raptorstar didn't answer, barely hearing his apprentice. The gentle buzzing grew louder as the pair of cats approached the beehive, and soon the cats saw the bees drifting lazily out and about.

"We're getting rid of that," Raptorstar deadpanned, continuing his search around the den, giving the beehive a wide berth for the timebeing. He needed a long stick.

"I figured," Crowpaw pouted under her breath. She watched her mentor from a safe distance, not wanting to get stung by any bees. Raptorstar grabbed a stick, testing out throwing it. He was pretty good, Crowpaw thought, the sticks he was tossing sailing through the air with ease. It was almost like he'd practicing throwing things.

In Raptor's mind, he was being brought back to his own youth. When he was Crowpaw's age, he would vent his anger at his brother by tossing sticks just like this. His aim had gotten rusty, but he should still be able to hit the hive after a couple of tries. Perhaps afterwards he and Crowpaw would have to run to the lake, but that shouldn't be a problem. Besides, Crowpaw needed to learn swimming anyway, he thought with a giddy grin. "Stand back and get ready to run," Raptorstar grunted around the stick in his mouth, ignoring the sputtering from his apprentice. He released the stick after Crowpaw scattered backwards, and it sailed through the air, a perfect path to the beehive. It hit the top, and the hive shook percariously for a few moments before falling to the ground, splitting in multiple pieces.

"Run!" Raptorstar called, watching with a wide eye as the bees started swarming, their buzzing growing impossibly loud. He let out a giddy laugh as he sprinted towards the lake, Crowpaw coming up beside him, sprinting in fear. "To the lake," he called out to her, laughing at her expression. "They won't hurt you, I promise."

Crowpaw didn't slow, pulling ahead of her mentor, not slowing until she reached the waters. She splashed right in, ignoring the fact that the water was a bit colder than she expected. Cold water was better than being stung.

"Alright, time to learn how to swim," Raptorstar panted as he looked over his shoulder, still seeing a few bees darting in behind them. "Unless you'd rather try to fight off some bees, but I promise that it's not easy."

Shooting him an angry look, Crowpaw only took one look back at the angry bugs before squeezing her eyes shut and diving into the water. Raptorstar slipped in after her, paddling beside her and giving her tips, though her instincts had already taken over, allowing her to paddle successfully through the waters.

Now he just had to wait out the bees, get back to Petalsong, and finish building her nest...

"Who are you?" Raptorstar deadpanned upon their arrival back from the lake. His pelt was still drying, his longer fur not able to dry in the sun as fast as Crowpaw's had. The she-cat was fluffed out, though she was dry. He dismissed her with a jerk of his head, and she left to get a mouse and groom her fur back down.

Raptorstar was staring at his reflection... at least sort of. This cat's right eye was gone, and the entire side of his face was scarred over. The leader had just looked at his own ghastly face, his blind left eye scarred over from the cat's claws. He hated his scars, but they paled in comparison to this cat.

The other cat's eye was wide, and he looked like he was ready to run... until his own eye caught sight of Raptorstar's face. The newcomer's jaw dropped slightly, and he froze. "I... uh... sorry," his voice was soft, almost velvety. It was clear he was used to talking softly, to being ignored, to staying away from others. His good ear was on a swivel, trying to listen to everything that was going on around him, ready to run away if he had to, back to solitude.

"Come with me," Raptorstar said quickly, wanting to get this tom away from the staring eyes of the other cats. It was clear this cat was uncomfortable with so much attention, and Raptorstar almost felt... sorry for him? Empathy and sympathy were not things that Raptorstar could ever say he felt before, but looking at this tom was different. He wanted to protect him.

The scarred cat nodded nervously, eye darting around to the other cats as he followed Raptorstar to his den. They could be mostly alone over here, away from the others stares.

"I'm sorry if seeing everyone is overwhelming," Raptorstar said gruffly, scowling a bit. "We don't get a lot of new cats coming in that are friendly."

The cat offered a half smile, his gaze softening a bit. "It was quite... a lot," he offered, visibly relaxing now that the two were alone. "I'm Atlas, by the way."

"Raptor... er, Raptorstar, rather." The leader still wasn't quite used to being a leader. "How did you find us?"

Atlas frowned, and he looked away. "It's going to sound crazy..." Raptorstar raised a metaphorical eyebrow. Nothing could sound crazier than the world ending and Twolegs disappearing, not anymore. But he stayed silent, letting the cat continue. "But some weird cat came to me in a dream. They told me to come here."

"Ah," Raptorstar said, almost laughing. "Let me tell you about our ancestors. And about our clan. Then you can decide if you'd like to stay. It's not much, but we do have food and water and safety in numbers."

Atlas nodded, tentatively following alongside Raptorstar. This clan was certainly getting more and more interesting, Raptor thought, shaking his head slightly as he led Atlas around.

Season: New-Leaf
Weather: All the snow has melted on the territories. It made water dangerous and floods have just started to calm down some now as green leaf approaches. The mud has started to dry up now and the danger of slipping is less possible now that your cats can dig their claws into something. Prey is highly abundant and so are the predators that hunt them and you. It will get ever higher as the days go one, even bringing two legs into the territories as they start to camp.

As you all have may noticed CaC has its very own lineart! The lines were created by the very talented Grey_Hoodie and are being colored in by various other mods, mini mods and the CaC artists. Allowing us to use the lineart for your cats lets us give more unique patterns as we are limited to free to use pictures. If you want your cats to be transferred onto the lineart all you have to do is get in contact with a mod and the team will take care of it.

I have also noticed that a lot of you have not been adding pebbles correctly. Remember, every post you make you get four pebbles automatically. Patrols will sometimes bring back extra pebbles they find as well! Pebbles can be used here at the cac store anytime!

As Gala was teaching Frostpaw in his dreams she started to trail off and look into the trees. When Frostpaw turned around he saw a raven watching them. After some time Frostpaw turned back to Gala, but found that she was moving towards the raven. Her scent seemed to change to an unfamiliar scent of another cat. When Gala reached the raven she disappeared but the scent remained, the raven now just watched Frostpaw. When Frostpaw turned away from the raven to walk in a different direction than his former mentor the raven let out a loud croak and flew towards the apprentice, waking him once again. The scent still lingered around the tom. (Only he can smell it)

It had been moons since Lilith had last seen her family, unaware they had survived she had long given up on trying to find them. That was until one fateful night she stumbled upon the Crossroad Demons. It was there she was reunited with her nephew Dove. They stayed up late that night catching up until Dove gave both good and bad news to her. "Their still alive... sort of." Dove meowed, his face scrunching up a bit with annoyance. "Those 'angels' Raggedstar is fighting against haven taken over their minds. Killing all that's left of them... It may look like them Lilith, but it's not them." the small white to hissed. His one hopeful bright eyes now shown with a fiery hated. Lilith sat there in silence, unsure how to cope with everything her nephew had just told her. If they where angels then they should be helping not killing their hosts, so what was going on. The more she sat in silence the more angry she became with the so called angels and herself for letting her family get separated from one another. "It is why we must do what Raggedstar wishes. To take these angels down. Get revenge for our family." Dove meowed, nuzzling his aunt a bit. Lilith let out a heavy sigh before giving a small nod. "You're right... We'll get revenge for them. However for now I think it's time for us to rest. After all it seems you play a very large role hear as the groups healer. I'll go out with you tomorrow for protection, I'm sure Raggedstar wouldn't mind that." Lilith meowed. The small white tom gave a small nod before rising to his paws and padding towards his nest. "Stay with me tonight... It's been so long since I've seen you... Plus sleeping alone here in the large room kind of scares me..." the young tom admitted. Lilith smiled softly and gave a small nod, joining Dove in his nest. The pair curled up together, Dove being the first to be whisked away to dreamland followed by Lilith shortly after.

The following morning the duo awoke, Dove leading the way as Lilith trailed behind him. The two made sure to get permission from Raggedstar for Lilith to act as Dove's guard while he went out to gather. Raggedstar thought for a moment before nodding, agreeing that Dove should have a guard every time he went out. After all he was the only healer the group had at that time. With a satisfied smile, Dove lead the way out. "I've been avoiding gathering herbs near the Celestial's border, due to not having some cat with me, but now with you hear Lilith I can finally go. The patrols report that there are plenty of herbs there that I could use in the future and thus it's time we take a look. However if you spot an 'angel' we will head back and report to Raggedstar." Dove explained. Lilith let out a small chuckle which caused her to receive a small glare from Dove. "Okay yes with all jokes set aside I will let you know. Now go. Gather. I'll stand here and watch the borders." Lilith meowed. Dove went off to gather herbs, his small body hidden by the tall grasses and rocks that covered the area before them. Lilith stood in the open watching Dove move about and check the herbs. That was until she felt eyes resting on her. Turning her head to the border, Lilith gazed across the other side as if sensing something or someone was watching. "Dove. Time to go. I feel we are being watched." She whispered. Like lightning, Lilith quickly whisked Dove and herself away and back farther into the Crossroad's territory and away from prying eyes.

Badgerstar almost-drowning didn't create some sort of special swimming gene and Midnightstream is just a brilliant exception," Longriver chuckled as Redpaw shot him a wounded pout, clumsily splashing about just out of the shallows. Out of all the apprentices, Redpaw and Poppypaw were having the hardest time with the swimming, seeming nervous in deep water. The rest of the apprentices were practicing now, with Runningpaw and Sunpaw swimming out deep in the lake, side by side, while the remainder of their siblings joined up in a game.
"I'm just being cautious," Redpaw said, paddling weakly as Longriver stepped alongside him, "of the plenty of ways to die, drowning seems a particularly terrible one."
"No kidding," Poppypaw muttered, glowering at the water as if she could glare it into submission. Redpaw chuckled a little, his motions freeing up a little with confidence as the attentive older tom swam alongside the pair of them. While Redpaw was notoriously reckless, having been told his father's curiosity similarly got him into trouble, he'd observed that Badgerstar now reigned with a little more grace and thought, still excitable but more reserved and logical in his approach to the clan's problems. As such, Redpaw had tried to adjust his behaviour accordingly, including not being too cocky about swimming.
"You're still paddling around with Poppypaw?" Redpaw rolled his eyes as Beepaw swam closer. "Aren't you meant to be a prodigy or something? Shouldn't you be good at this, or is it just another thing I'm better at than you are?"
"Maybe you should close your mouth so you don't swallow lake water," Redpaw chided, seconds before Beepaw spluttered and spat water out, earning the ginger tom a smug smile from the older apprentice, "I'm trying to make sure I have my technique perfect so that next time I go to swim, I know I'll remember."
"Redpaw's pacing himself, which is good," Longriver interjected, seeing the fury in Beepaw's eyes, "swimming isn't like moving on land. Air resistance is much less than the resistance of the water, and our paws are used to being able to gain momentum from pushing off solid ground in order to make us go faster. Swimming is much more of a workout, and even cats with a lot of stamina can drain themselves fast if they're not careful." Sufficiently chastised, Beepaw sniffed and swam away, leaving Longriver to shake his head, amused. When he looked up, Poppypaw was swimming confidently for Tallpaw, while Redpaw looked up at him.
"Did you practice swimming a lot then, Longriver? You saved my dad, after all." Longriver gave a nervous chuckle.
"Admittedly... no. The place I came from was very wooded, and there weren't any bodies of water, so I didn't learn until I came to GroveClan itself. It was... well, it was a stupid decision, but I can't bring myself to regret it. I knew I was jumping in unprepared, but I also knew terrible things could happen if I just left him and tried to find someone who would be better suited to it."
"It must have been really scary for you," Redpaw frowned at the water, "you must have had to have been so brave."
"I guess so. I didn't really think about it until I burst into the camp, drenched to the bone, and Goldleaf and Harrierstreak starting chewing my ears off about it. Sometimes, when it's the right thing to do, that knowledge settles in your heart, and it makes you brave enough to put the fear aside... even if only just for a short ti- Redpaw?" Longriver blinked, following the ginger's wounded gaze toward Beepaw, who was muttering as Brindlepaw laughed, even as a small smile cracked his features. Longriver's face softened as he watched the younger tom. He jolted, as if he were suddenly aware of being watched, turning back to Longriver with a blink.
"Sorry, did you say something?"
"Nothing important," Longriver said with a smile, "come on, why don't we practice a little more."

As the Newleaf sun shone down through the canopy, it turned Hazelskip's pelt to pure fire, soft fur rippling over strong muscles as she bounded alongside her cousins, laughing along at something Boulderflame had said while Oakback shook his head in amusement, shoulders shaking with a chuckle. Quailberry couldn't help but think she was the most beautiful thing in the world, and it completely mystified him that other cats didn't seem to be of the same opinion as him. She was awe-inspiring; gorgeous and brilliant, with a smile so radiant it could have substituted for the sun.
"Oof," said Dustfang beside him, and he jumped, glancing at the bigger tom, "you do have it bad."
"Dustfang! Leave him alone," Shadowtail nudged her mate as Quailberry ducked his head in embarrassment, "don't worry, Quailberry, I think it's sweet, and no matter what you're not as bad as Ashenstrike was mooning over Lionheart when they first met... and he didn't even have a chance. At all." Dustfang rolled his eyes a little as Quailberry gave the pair of them a shy smile, blowing out a breath.
"I don't feel like I have much of a chance," Quailberry glanced up toward Hazelskip, "not... not because I don't think I'm good enough for her or anything but... she's my best friend. She made me feel at home here in the clan, and we've been so close ever since, and I just... I don't want to mistake anything, you know? I don't think she did all that because she likes me, and at the end of the day I would rather be in her life in whatever way I can than lose her as a friend because I make her uncomfortable and she doesn't reciprocate."
"Ah... the Badgerstar and Maplefall conundrum," Dustfang nodded, "they were like that too, once upon a time. Can I give you some advice?"
"Please."
"The threshold between friendship and romance is much narrower than you think. It took me a while to realize the feelings I had for Shadowtail stretched beyond purely platonic, half because I wasn't thinking about romance at all, and half because I considered her to be my friend. And she is still my best friend, but she's also the love of my life- my whole world and everything in it. Those two things can intersect quite neatly and... if Hazelskip is anything like her parents, which I think you know she is, she wouldn't just drop you for having feelings like that, even if she didn't feel the same way."
"You wouldn't lose her," Shadowtail said gently, "she's a good cat- sweet- and she cares about you... but sometimes you have to take your leap of faith. You can wait and you can wait and you can wait for any sign you like... but sometimes what it comes down to is just being brave enough to stand and say what you feel. You never know... you might surprise yourself." Quailberry's smile was shy, but bright.
"Thank you, both of you," he looked up again, to where Hazelskip was nuzzling Oakback's cheek, "I just... I just really want to get it right."
"Well," Dustfang said, "you can't get it wrong if it's the truth."

"Are you sure about this?"
"No," Juniperstorm took a deep breath, turning to smile reassuringly at Thunderspark who remained unconvinced, "but... if there's even a chance that this helps Midnightstream in whatever incrementally tiny way... I have to take it. He's hurting, and I think it's something I can't fix. I don't know if Hornetshade can either, but it's worth a shot. Right?"
"Right," Thunderspark touched her nose to Juniperstorm's cheek, before leaning her forehead there with a sigh, "just... I don't know. He's fragile right now, I'm not sure going behind his back is really the best way... not that we're really going behind his back I suppose but..."
"You're worried for me, aren't you?" Juniperstorm's tone was amused.
"So throw me to the Shadows, I don't like the idea of you running around in unfamiliar territory on your own. What if Highgarden has problems with predators? What if a patrol doesn't recognize you and mauls you? What if-"
"Hey." Juniperstorm pressed their foreheads together with a purr. "I can handle myself, you know this. I'm gonna be fine, and if anything happens I'll just yowl really, really loudly, and then you'll come find me." Thunderspark made an annoyed noise, shoving Juniperstorm with her shoulder while the calico molly laughed.
"You're not funny," Thunderspark muttered, but she was smiling, "fine, just... be safe, okay? For me."
"Always." Juniperstorm nodded, and with that, she turned and stepped across the border into Highgarden.
The territory wasn't much different, but she'd overheard her father talking often enough with Lionheart or Maplefall about Highgarden's propensity to flooding. She stuck to high ground, scenting around for the clan and following the trail toward where the scents coalesced and became stronger. From her vantage points, she could see how the river that emptied into the GroveClan waterfall was raging with the Newleaf rains, and the idea of being caught in it was sobering enough to provoke caution, even beyond what she'd promised her friend.
Finally, Highgarden's camp came into view. The scents were strong, and down below she could see cats milling around. She crested the last hill, heading toward the camp. She did her best to stay in the open, not wanting to sneak up on the cats and be mistaken for an enemy. As she approached, a tall, skinny brown tom tensed up, his ears flattening a little. He looked nervous, as if unsure what to do, so Juniperstorm simply smiled, and stopped where she was standing, a few tail-lengths away.
"Hi. I'm sorry to bother you. I'm Juniperstorm, from GroveClan. I was hoping I could talk to Tawnyrose?" The tom seemed to mull that over for a second, still looking nervous about the decision, so Juniperstorm sat and wrapped her tail around her paws, closing her eyes peacefully while she waited. After a few more beats of silence, the tom spoke up.
"I don't know about Tawnyrose... but I can take you to Bluetcrest? Her attendant?"
"That works," Juniperstorm said, pushing to her paws again and moving closer, "thank you...?"
"Oh. Otterfur." He blinked, tilting his head curiously at Juniperstorm. "I've... I've only smelled your clan around, but Merlinsong mentioned that you're allies of ours. I've never seen anyone from your clan though, and I don't think I've heard of you, so I was just wondering..." Juniperstorm chuckled a little.
"Don't worry, I'm not going to bite your head off for asking," the narrow-faced tom sagged in relief a bit, "I'm just here to ask a favour of my brother's friend, but I thought it would be courteous to talk to the leader first before spiriting him away, you know? GroveClan doesn't really cross into Highgarden territory often, not like we do with HazeClan and QuickClan, with mates and friends going in between. Highgarden's a little more private and we try to respect that... but this is important."
"Right..." Otterfur paused in the middle of camp, nodding to Juniperstorm. "Wait here, I'll go and get Bluetcrest for you." Juniperstorm nodded, settling down in the centre of camp. She could feel eyes on her, some curious, some a little worried, but she simply closed her own again and took a deep breath. When she opened them again, there was one set of eyes that remained on her pelt, but she didn't turn to look. A scuffling noise drew her attention, and she turned just as Bluetcrest strode out of the den purposefully, a smile on his face that looked a little frazzled. Otterfur nodded to her, slinking past to return to his post.
"Juniperstorm, was it? Badgerstar's eldest, if I'm not mistaken?"
"That's me."
"To what do we owe the pleasure?" Juniperstorm didn't think he sounded very pleased, but she brushed off the prickling feeling in her spine to smile politely at the attendant, dipping her head in greeting. Behind him, she could see a cat who smelled strongly of herbs emerging from a den with a blue-eyed tom next to him, both looking curious. Juniperstorm turned her attention back to Bluetcrest.
"Something's happened in GroveClan, nothing terrible or life-threatening, and we're not calling on Highgarden to aid us in battle or anything, but... it's a little more personal, and my brother is having a hard time with it so, um, I thought he could use a friend... and I know he's friends with Hornetshade. Or, he was, and I guess I just figured it might be easier talking to someone who didn't watch it all happen? An unbiased point of view, I guess- I know, I'm guessing a lot." She took a deep breath and steeled herself. "I was hoping you wouldn't mind if I borrowed Hornetshade for an afternoon. It doesn't have to be right this minute, just... whenever works with you. Obviously, if he doesn't feel like coming he doesn't have to but I thought there was no harm in at least trying."
"That's very sweet of you," Bluetcrest's shoulders seemed lighter, less tense, "I'll go get him for you, shall I?"
"That would be great." Juniperstorm smiled, curling her tail over her paws. She exhaled loudly as Bluetcrest left, closing her eyes and letting her shoulders sag. She wasn't sure why that had been so hard, but in the silence, a scent blew toward her that unnerved her. She shook her head; thoughts of Midnightstream often conjured up the lingering smell of the Kingdom, and she forced herself not to think about it now. Something big rustled behind her, at the clan entrance, so she turned to look, and stopped dead.
Once upon a time, all Juniperstorm had thought about was Erasmus. There was anger in her soul, too much of it to be contained, and it spilled into her thoughts, all kinds of terrible ideas about what she would do if she ever saw him again. Now, she was frozen, eyes wide and heartbeat ticking like a rabbit's footsteps in her throat. She felt like she could scream, but nothing came out. The big tom looked shocked to see her too, if only for a second, before his face swept into an impasse, and the fury came back with a force. Her ears slammed back against her head, and she hissed.
"Juniperstorm?" That was Hornetshade's voice, curious and a little frightened by her visage. She whipped around toward him, wild eyes taking in Hornetshade and Bluetcrest. The young tom looked confused, head tilted to the side in concern, but the look in Bluetcrest's eyes and the grim set of his maw told Juniperstorm all she needed.
"You knew," she hissed, "what is wrong with you? How could you have him here, after what he did?"
"Juniperstorm, please try to understand-"
"No! You try to understand," Juniperstorm snarled, "he ruined my life. He caused irreparable damage to me, to my brother, to my parents and to my clan, scars that still break open and bleed to this day, and you harbor him here, living a normal life, as if there was no consequence to what he did."
"I didn't do anything," Erasmus said, glaring hard back at Bluetcrest, who looked a little like he might rip Erasmus' throat out with his own teeth. Juniperstorm's voice kicked up an octave in hysterics.
"Liar! You have everyone else fooled, you always have, but you were sloppy in your planning and I know you ordered it to be done. Everything you do is a lie, some machination spun to make sure you have all the power, always, but you robbed my sister of her life, and now you live the one she should have had, could have had, if you hadn't grossly violated the balance of nature." Her attention swung back to Bluetcrest now, even as she could see the medicine cat approaching, his blue-eyed companion darting toward a den in a hurry. "Dusklight's eye is gone. Halfpond still has night terrors about his whole family crossing that border and never coming back. Pinefeather can't even walk near the border without breaking down. He tries to hide it but everyone knows. My mother still wakes up crying in the middle of the night. My fathers' heart broke that night, and he has never recovered. You are complicit in the pain of my Clan, of my family, and I will not forget that about you."
Angrily, Juniperstorm turned and stalked toward the entrance, shouldering past Erasmus with enough force to make the huge tom stumble. Outside of the camp, Otterfur stared at her with wide eyes, but she did not meet them, chin held high and eyes full of fire as she stalked forward, forcing her twitching muscles to stabilize before she felt compelled to break into a run. She could hear someone calling her, but she kept moving, feeling the need to be as far away from the clan as possible, and to dunk herself in water to get rid of the crawling sensation on her fur where she'd brushed against Erasmus.
"Juniperstorm, please wait!" Hornetshade skidded in front of her, drawing her up short, "what's going on? Bluetcrest said something about Midnightstream and then y-"
"Stay away," Juniperstorm's ears flattened as she let out a seething hiss, "I thought maybe you could help him, but your help is the last thing he needs right now, not when your clan lets that... that... that monster live here like nothing happened. Don't come around, Hornetshade, because if you do I swear I'll do a hundred times worse to you than what that freak of nature did to my sister." With that, she shoved past the toyger, leaving him bewildered as she streaked back toward the GroveClan border.
Her muscles bunched powerfully under her fur and the wind bit in a satisfying way. The more distance between her and Highgarden, the more the anger ebbed, and by the time she skidded across the border next to a waiting Thunderspark, she mostly just felt hollow. Her friend rocketed to her paws, concern in her eyes.
"Let's go," Juniperstorm said gruffly, bounding past her and back into the forest.
"Wait, Juniperstorm!" Thunderspark took off after her, turning just a second too early to see the tiger-striped pelt skid to a stop at the border, watching them disappear with hopeless desperation glittering in his eyes.

Adderstorm reclined on her side, watching as Squirrelwhisker rolled onto his back, bundling Cedarkit and Elmkit onto his chest as they gave delighted squeals. Elderkit pounced on her father's head, chewing on his ear while Cypresskit batted at his fluffy tail where it swept across the ground. Squirrelwhisker was laughing, his eyes screwed up in happiness, but he opened them when he felt his mate staring.
"What?"
"Nothing. It's just nice to see you with them." She paused a little, sweeping her tail around her body as she sat up. "Are you sure you still want to stay in the nursery with them? I know we talked about it a lot before they were actually born, but..."
"Of course I want to stay with them." Squirrelwhisker gently placed his daughters down again, rolling over and sitting up, swishing his tail more pointedly to direct their attention toward tackling with it. "Are you having second thoughts about going back to patrols so early on? If you like, we can both be in the nursery together for a while. I wouldn't mind that, but I'm also not unhappy to be here on my own. I like Dawnblossom, and Wolverinejaw and Sedgefire, and Harepuddle, so it's not like I'm going to be lonely. And besides, I like kits."
"I know, love, I just..." Adderstorm sighed, "I can't help but think that I'm robbing you of something. I know you're different to me, and being cooped up like this isn't as frustrating for you... but I don't want you to... to resent me or anything."
"Hey, sweetie," Squirrelwhisker smiled, scooting closer to his mate and pressing his forehead against hers, "Adderstorm. I wouldn't have offered if I didn't think it would make me happy. I love you, and I want you to be happy, but I would have worked out something that wouldn't make us both miserable if I didn't want to be here. I'm happy to take the break and just focus on raising our kits while you get out there and provide for the clan. I promise you, one hundred percent, it's okay."
"Okay," Adderstorm breathed out, smiling down at her kits as they wiggled between their parents, purring at the warmth, "although I am gonna miss these little rascals when I'm out on patrol."

"How're you doing?"
"Huh?" Emberwing blinked, looking up to see Cinderdawn walking beside her. The she-cat had inherited her father's disposition but her mother's grace, and the way she walked had Dustfang's strong strides, but Shadowtail's fluidity. Out of all her siblings, Cinderdawn seemed to be the most perfect mix of both of them. It made sense that even so young, she'd been asked to lead a patrol. Up ahead, Mottlebloom and Fernstone were gossiping in quiet conference, while Brackeneyes was nodding seriously to something Ravenflight was telling her. The patrol was very young, and Emberwing supposed she should be worried, but she mostly just felt peceful.
"I asked how you were doing," Cinderdawn smiled a little, "you dropped right back, scowling at your paws like you were trying to turn them back to front. I suppose I was just wondering if they were thoughts you'd want to talk about." Emberwing chuckled, a little embarrassed, before she shook her head.
"No, I'm okay. I just think... a lot."
"It's good to have thinkers in the clan. Combats reckless morons like my brother," Cinderdawn flicked her ear, amused, "but it doesn't help so much that you get stuck in your own head. Sometimes it helps to talk about what you're thinking about. Work it out in a verbal train of thought, you know?"
"You don't have to kit-sit me," Emberwing looked a little amused, "I'm not so fragile that I'm going to break down at any time, just because a relationship didn't work out. I mean, sure, it hurts... but I think I always knew deep down that I wasn't the one, and I just kidded myself into believing that I could be if I stuck at it long enough."
"Not a terribly healthy attitude to have," Cinderdawn chuckled as Emberwing shot her a withering look, "so maybe it wasn't the nicest thing to say... but it was the truth. I wish I could say I understood what it was like to come into a clan like you did... but I don't, and I doubt anything I say will be any comforting given circumstance... but for what it's worth, I am sorry that it played out the way it did, and if you ever need a friend..."
"Oh. Uh. Thank you." Emberwing blinked a little, frowning at her paws. "Can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
"Do you remember her?"
"No," Cinderdawn shook her head, "my mom gave birth to us while they were organizing their patrol. I never got to be in the nursery with her, but I think if I had been I would have liked her. I do remember the aftermath though. We were all so young, and I know we're not really supposed to remember that far back... but I remembered when it happened, and Dad came back with his paws smelling like blood, and I remember Maplefall screaming outside while Dad wrapped around Mom and they both... just cried. I remember seeing Dusklight struggle with learning how to adapt to his eye, and how hollow Badgerstar looked. Maybe I don't remember her, but I remember the pain that her death caused."
"I wish I had known her," Emberwing sighed, "maybe then I would understand."
"It's not just about her," Cinderdawn said gently, "it would have been the same if it had been anyone's kit. Imagine that you'd lived in relative peace for so long, hardly any attacks by predators, no natural disasters, the worst anyone had ever been hurt was your leader with his nine lives... and then someone came into the nursery and kidnapped Strongpaw, and took her away, and when you went to get her back, someone killed her right in front of you. It was the most violence the clan had ever faced, and it was senseless. That's what hurt the clan."
"I... I guess I never thought about it like that," Emberwing swallowed, "I always thought it's because Twilightkit was who she was that everyone mourned." She fell quiet for a second. "I thought... if it were someone like me, maybe it would have been sad for a while, but the wounds never would have cut so deep."
"They would have," Cinderdawn gently pressed her shoulder against Emberwing's. "I'm sorry you went through all of this on your own. Like I said before... if you ever need a friend, I'll be here. Rain, wind, shine. That's the saying, right?" Emberwing chuckled, ducking her head shyly.
"Thanks. It'll be nice to have a friend."

"So, we're stuck here huh?" Pebblebird cracked open an eye where he was sunning in the GroveClan sunshine to see Crowcharm standing over him, his tail flicking idly. The smaller tom chuckled, sitting upright and shaking out his glossy black pelt, dislodging some dry dirt from it.
"Well, we're not really stuck here persay, but we are missing out on patrols, yeah. Bored? Lonely without your partner in crime?" Crowcharm looked sulky for a second, before he huffed and a small smile crossed his face, evidently recognizing Pebblebird's teasing as the other tom purred.
"Okay, maybe I'm a little mad that Ravenflight is on patrol without me and I'm not. It feels so weird to just be... chilling, I guess. Um. Anyway. I was wondering if you maybe wanted to go down to the lake with me? It's so hot today that I thought a swim would be nice." Pebblebird thought about that for a moment, before he smiled, with a nod.
"Sure thing! C'mon, Crowcharm!"
"Wh- hey! This was my idea!" Crowcharm grumbled as Pebblebird laughed, the pair of them walking step for step beside each other as they headed down through the forest toward the lake. As they breached the shore, they saw part of a hunting patrol on the far side of the lake, fishing from the two-leg construction while the rest of the patrol wound through the trees near the shoreline. The two black toms stayed well clear of them, heading for a shallow area of the lake and wading in.
"Ahhh," Pebblebird sighed, "you were right, this is much better." He turned to find Crowcharm staring, the older tom looking away, embarrassed, as Pebblebird gave an amused tilt of his head. "Everything okay?"
"Yeah," Crowcharm said, but his voice sounded strangled. "Yeah. Fine."
"Crowcharm, why did you ask me to come hang out today? I know Pitchrunner's in camp, and you're better friends with him, and I'm pretty sure Lilactail and Lavenderspring are around too... so why just me? You didn't want to make an event out of it?" Crowcharm cast his gaze away, looking suddenly shy as he scuffled his paws from side to side.
"I um... we don't hang out much, I know, but I... would like to. Hang out with you more. Just you." Pebblebird blinked, as he took in what Crowcharm was saying, before a smile crossed his face and he waded closer to touch his nose to the other tom's cheek with a happy little purr, which eased some of the tension in the taller tom's shoulders.
"I'd be happy to. But you are going to lose so many splash fights." Crowcharm still looked puzzled when Pebblebird reared back and slammed his paws into the water, sending a wave directly into Crowcharm's face. The tom was still sputtering as Pebblebird laughed and turned, sprinting away through the water.
"I'm going to get you for that!" Crowcharm called after him, taking chase. Pebblebird's cackling laugh lifted into the Newleaf air, all the way up to the sun beating down.

Finn looked at the small group of cats that gathered in the upwalker garden. It was nice to know he was able to influence help from them and was thankful for their help. He opened his mouth to go over the plan once more, "Okay, we need to get as many kits as we can before the upwalker comes back. For some reason only Pearpaw can come and go from the flap so he will have to carry the kits out to us. Once they are out we need to have them go through the path we created, they cant jump the walls yet and I dont want to risk anyone getting hurt by trying to jump a wall with them."

The cats all nodded and waited for Pearpaw to start bringing out the kits, they didnt have to wait long as he got to it right away. Even Ryne somehow managed to get out through the flap with all the kits. Ryne did a quick headcount of the kits before nodding at Finn, an all good was transmitted and he lead the way down the path that was created to a hole in the fence. Ryne jumped over to help coax the kits through but all the new smells and cats had them feeling overwhelmed and scared. Mothwish was on the other side with Ryne, calling her siblings names to get them to come through.

"Mothpaw?" A tom called out when they heard her and then another cat dis the same before running in view.

Mothwish turn and a look of happiness and shock came to her, "Dad?! Barknose!" She forgot what she was doing as she ran to them and rubbed against them happily.

Mudspotsdisnt waste anytime, "Is your brother and mother here as well?" He looked around her, hoping they would be right there. Just then a monster pulled into the pavement infront of the nest and the upwalker came out. The cats hid in the brush close to the fence.

Mothwish's eye grew wide, "We need to hurry!" She called out to the others, ignoring her father. Mudspots heard the urgency and stood back, he was filled with pride that his daughter was so strong now. Just then he saw through the hole in the fence and saw the kits and he gasped, it scared the kits and they started to run back towards the flap, meowing little crys.

Ryne hissed at the tom, "Get out of here! You're scaring them!" Mudspots shook his head and couldnt move, were those his kits? He couldnt just leave. Where was Applenose?

Barknose shoved his father to the side, "Comon, we need to get out of their way, we can catch up later." Mudspots let himself be moved but never stopped looking.

Once they were out of the way the cats had managed to coax some the kits back towards the hole and it was Winter that gave one of them a hard shove to get them to go through. The same time that happened the back door opened and the two leg came calling to them. Finn and Eagle grabbed a kit, to their protest and jumped over the wall, not bothering with the plan as they took off a way. The kit Winter had pushed out was carried by Mothwish, Ryne looked back and saw that the remaining kits were picked up by the upwalker and taken back inside, not even Pearpaw could get out as the flap was blocked.

The cats had all gathered up with the kits that were saved, Ryne let them huddle into her so they would feel safe. Mudspots and Barknose were there asking a bunch of questions and it was Mothwish that spoke to him. Explaining what happened to their mother and this situation.

Ryne spoke up this time, "Dewwy and Puff are still back with Pearpaw. I doubt we will be able to get them before they are given out. We wont know where they will go." Sadness in her voice.

Winter frowned, "That's the life of a kittypet mother, once the two legs see they are big enough and no longer need milk they are given to other upwalkers and you would be lucky to ever see them again."

Mudspots looked hurt, "How can we save them? I dont want to lose them. I've spent many moons trying to find my family."

"Cherish what you have now, you got lucky." Finn muttered. He didnt bother mentioning that if Mudspots hasn't hissed then the kits would have never run away and they could have gotten them all.

Mudspots went over to the kits and nudged them, "Hello, my name is Mudspots and I am your father." He cooed to them. They looked at him and then looked at Ryne who nodded.

The next few days the family bonded and got to know eachother. The kits soon loved their dad but were afraid of Barknose and cried and wailed everytime he came by them. The tom was hurt and knew he should give his father some space and that is what he did as he roamed around to get a better feel for the area. At night he would talk with Mudspots and learned that his father had no plans to go back to the clan, they didnt want to help search for the family, so why go back to the unhelpful clan?
