Now like I said, this is basically my first impression of Exo, barring the old stuff. I’m gonna give you my really honest opinion that may offend: they’re really similar to NCT. Just based on this, it seems like SM has a particular formula they like to stick to when doing boy groups. This concept is something NCT would do.
I know people are really excited about Obsession(I get it it’s pretty cool) but lately I’ve been drawn to the more unique groups on the scene so I think I’ll still pass on Exo for now.
I think it’s interesting that a lot of Exo fans are just into Exo? I personally can’t imagine not being multifandom(so much to love!) but I guess I can see why you might focus on Exo more. They’re, how do say.... powerful? I guess? Captivating. Yes, they’re captivating. They make you want to keep looking at them.

I mean, I’m just into Red Velvet in terms of how much do I know. I don’t have a bias in any other group and I’m not as invested. I’m exploring other groups but Red Velvet is the one I know most about and spend most of my time watching... I think it is because they are so versatile and interesting, so I never get bored, and they just leave me wanting to watch more. (I could watch fan videos for weeks without getting bored). So for me, it’s just because I don’t get bored with the group so I don’t feel a huge need to go look at other groups. I think Exo-L’s (that is what they are called, right? Sorry I’m still learning lol) have the same thing where they don’t get bored, so they don’t need to look at other groups. Their group is captivating and attention grabbing. Just my take. Maybe I’ll change as I continue down the “KPOP Rabbit-hole”, as it often called. I’ve only been a fan for about 6-8 months, so we’ll see.

just some explanations / clarifications i guess??

- they originally had twelve members but three left. there's nine now but lay has been promoting in china due to political situations between china and korea. kyungsoo and xiumin, meanwhile, are in the military! it's definitely weird seeing only six of them aha its like a throwback to exom exok days

- exo has had an ongoing storyline since their debut. the bad guys, the red force, captured them (monster/lucky one era) and cloned them, creating x-exo. that's why they keep flashing between two different sets of looks, it's exo vs their clones. the fire? another part of exo's story, they all have powers, fire is chanyeols :)) you can also see the others use theirs in obsession and other mvs

- yeahh its kind of hard to understand if you don't really follow the theories but hopefully the above explanation kind of helps??

- i do see the similarity with this comeback but overall, this is a new sound for exo. they experiment a lot with genres and concepts, similarly to red velvet, but do have a very distinctive sound that's clearly exo (they're known for their pop/rnb mix). while obsession sounds nct-ish (especially the side track jekyll) it still has that exo flare.

- im going to have to chalk up a large part to their discography. they continually produce better albums each comeback and experiment with genres whilst always retaining the "exo" sound. the musicality just keeps improving, a lot of people thought exodus was going to their peak but that hasn't been the case. in some cases, genre changes are detrimental to groups (they dont preform as well, fans dont like the change) but this is something fans of most sm groups are used to and exo has been doing it since debut so it works well. just going to briefly compare to bts since it's the first thing that comes to my mind, aka, a good portion of fans tend to prefer bts's music before wings era while some prefer wings era and after. justtt an observation that applies to myself as well, used to be a huge army until i lost interest in a large portion of their new releases.

i would also just guess that a lot of exo-l' s just prefer exo's rnb pop style of music + their vocals. they have some of the best vocals in the industry. iff you were interested in checking them out a little more, i reccomend this to get a feel for their discography?

- aahhh this about sums up my stance as a kpop fan these days. i listen to a lot of groups and soloists but i only keep up with one group now (exo). i used to stan big bang (my og group), bts, monsta x, suju, shinee, red velvet, clc, mamamoo, toppdogg, boys republic, and nct, but i've uh, well, i've fallen out of stan culture. it's too tiring to keep up with everything. trying to get back into red velvet again though since i listen to pretty much their entire discography and i really like their variety. i'm also a sucker for wendy's vocals

- this sounds about right as well :) and yes, exo-l is right although sometimes you'll see aeri/eri, it's just a nickname of sorts

for girl groups, i'd reccomend clc! cheshires are really chill and welcoming, i don't think i've ever seen a fanwar and i think you might enjoy their music? check out clc's crystyle album for sure! the girls are all really sweet as well and have a caring relationship similar to rv i'd say.

just for more music, try f(x). they have a rather unique discography, very experimental. some of my favourites are butterfly, diamond, deja vu, papi, kick, and toy, but honestly all of their albums are great.

for boy groups, definitely shinee. there's this old variety show they were in called "hello baby", it's what made me love them in the first place--if you're interested in them, definitely watch it, all the episodes are on youtube. their music is also real solid as well. they have some glorious solo albums as well :)
