"Oh come on..." Tamara groaned as she approached the fields. Where she had planted the potato seeds was.. One. Dried up. Sprout. Despite her best efforts, the plant hadn't grown, which meant no potatoes for everyone. "Why couldn't I do one thing right, for once?" Tamara sighed. It was most likely the the sudden summer heat had killed the plant. She had probably planted it a little too late, and it hadn't had time to grow strong before the hotter weather. Tamara sighed again and wiped her face with her hands, unconsciously wiping dirt on it- a big sign she had changed, in fact. "What's wrong, sweetheart?" the slow voice from behind made Tamara's eyebrow shoot up. "What's wrong? You're in the same boat as I am, as far as I know. The potatoes didn't grow, they were killed by the sun." Xzavier approached and laid a hand on her shoulder. "Don't worry Tamara, it doesn't matter. The hunters catch enough meat anyway, you know." Tamara shrugged her shoulder quickly. "Hands off." she mumbled. "You don't understand." and with those words, Tamara briskly turned away and made her way back to the main part of the village.
Walking between the houses, Tamara was distraught to see how well everyone else was doing. The hunters were bringing back lots of meat, Xzavier kept finding veggies and fruits in the forest, several had found their.. Significant Other, including Myriam and Pantaleon (they were cute, Tamara had to admit) and Maple had just given birth to an adorable little boy.. Everyone seemed to thrive and help out and be alive really, while she? She was just on the side of it all, never able to really participate and help out.
"Oof!" Tamara stumbled back. In her absent-minded walking, she had walked straight into Myriam. What she didn't know, was that the head chief had in fact also been walking without looking where she went. "I'm sorry Myriam, I-" "Oh no no don't be sorry! I wasn't paying attention." Myriam waved Tamara's apology aside. "I'm sorry." the leader repeated. Tamara shrugged. "It's alright. Where were you going?" as she said the first two words, Tamara had a very strange feeling.. Why wasn't she mad at Myriam? This wasn't how she usually behaved.. Tamara concentrated on what Myriam was saying. "Well, I have been thinking of something. I heard words of a marketplace, in the east, and I wanted to maybe send some people there.." As soon as she heard the word "market", Tamara's eyes lit up. "Market, you mean there's bargaining involved?" she asked quickly. Myriam nodded. "Yes, probably. There's a lot of goods that we can't get here, and that we may find there." she paused, while Tamara's smile grew.
"Tamara, hadn't you told me that your father was a merchant?" she asked then, growing suspicious of the large smile. Tamara nodded. "Yes, yes I did! He was a merchant and a bloddy good one at that, and I learned from him. That's something I'm actually good at. I can bargain so well that I can get you a dragon against a cat- no, better. I can bargain for a dragon and a cat against nothing!" Tamara grinned and did two fingerguns in Myriam's direction, grinning crazily, as she was completely taken by her own speech. There was a pause. Tamara... Suddenly felt very awkward. "Uhh I'm sorry Myriam, I got carried away.." she stepped back a little.
"No, no!" Myriam grabbed Tamara's hands. "I'm sorry, you took me by surprise. I would be thrilled if you accepted to go to the market and represent Cyrrane there." she told her warmly. Tamara hesitantly raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure?.." and when Myriam nodded earnestly, Tamara felt her heart try beating itself out of her chest. This was it! This was her chance to prove she wasn't useless; she'd show them her worth. "Thank you, Myriam. Now, I need to know exactly what we have to offer, what we need, who is coming with me, how long the trip will take..." Tamara now stood very straight, and her tone was as professional as it had been when she had first arrived to Cyrrane. But now, it wasn't as cold as back then, Myriam mused. Now, there was a definite warm tone in Tamara's voice, pride of whom she represented.

On their patrol, Rovi and Azelle were catching up after several years of having been separated. "I was bought by a circus, because I was 'strange', they said. Because of my.. Skin color. Over there, they all had white skin." Rovi paused in his story. "it really wasn't great. Embarrassing, too.. They treated me like an animal at times. I ran away after a year or so, and found a first village. They disbanded, people fought all the time. I stuck with Marya, neither of us wanted to be left alone again. We traveled for a while until we found Cyrrane. This is where I've felt the safest since.. Since everything happened back home, actually." he looked to the side, memories flooding his brain. Azelle slid her hand into his and squeezed. "Hey, at least we have each other again. I don't want to be separated from you for so long ever again." Rovi turned his head ot her and smiled briefly, squeezing his younger sisters hand. "Me neither, Azelle." There was a short pause, during which both walked silently, watching the forest and grass around them.
Then Azelle looked at her brother mischievously. "Now tell me Rovi.. Is there anything between you and Marya? You speak pretty warmly of her." she grinned. Surprised, Rovi shook his head quickly. "No! No, I don't-no no, I don't see her that way. More like a good friend, or a sis- wait, what's that?" he suddenly pointed towards the shore of the lake, where they had just arrived. "Hey now, don't avoid the question!" Azelle protested. "No, I'm not avoiding the question. There really is something in the sand." Rovi sped up his step to cross the beach. There, nestled just at the edge of the water, was the very clear and recognizable shape of a ship's keel imprinted in the sand.
"Who?.." Rovi immediately looked across the lake, but there was nothing to disturb its surface other than the few birds swimming at its surface. Azelle was crouched by the edge of the mark. "Look, steps. Weird ones too." and when her brother approached, Azelle pointed to the steps leading away from the ship and disappearing into he forest. They only had three large toes, and claws at the ends. Rovi grunted. "Never seen this before. Not human though." "Those claws make me shiver." Azelle mused. Rovi nodded in agreement. "Shall we go back?" he asked. "They aren't very recent, so I doubt we have any chance of catching up to this thing." Azelle stood up, nodding. "It's not like there was a horde of them either, I don't think we are in any immediate danger. We can tell Myriam about it." and having agreed upon this, the siblings left in direction of the village.

Unseen by both, in the bushes, a surprisingly humanoid-looking turtle was scribbling in a notebook, peering at the fast disappearing pair. "Hmm, with their investigations not very thorough, they are." the turtle muttered under his breath, before putting the notebook away in his briefcase and shuffling away into the forest.
~
On their way back, Rovi and Azelle, a little less talkative perhaps, were hurrying. Azelle, despite having said earlier she didn't believe there was any danger, was still worried. What if this creature was more dangerous than they had expected? Had that been simply a transport beast and was there a dangerous creature on its back? They had no information.. Maybe they should have followed the tracks after all. As she anxiously scanned the treeline, Azelle suddenly saw a movement. "Rovi, look!" she exclaimed, running forward to look. What she was seeing didn't make sense. The shape moving away was a giant turtle shell? But the closer she got to the forest edge, the further the creature was. "Oh come o- Ah!" and that's when it happened. Her entire attention being concentrated on the creature in the forest, Azelle hadn't noticed the unstable rocks under her feet; predictably, her feet slipped to the side, and with a dull "Oof-" Azelle fell headlong on the rock-strewn ground.
"Azelle! You alright?" Rovi ran to her. Slightly dizzy but otherwise conscious, Azelle had already begun sitting up by the time he got to her. "I'm fine- ouch, stop!" Rovi had tried to help her stand, and in doing this had touched her right side. He immediately stopped, apologizing profusely. Azelle groaned. "Shut up, Rovi. I'm alright, my side is just painful.." gingerly, she lifted her half-destroyed shirt to look on the side, and winced. The rocks in the ground had dug holes into her shirt as she had fallen, and had largely injured her side too. It was starting to bleed, and the wound was dirty. Rovi's brows came down quickly. "Azelle, we need Joan to look at this quickly. It could get infected." "I jolly well know that, Rovi. Now help me get up, and don't touch my side."
~
After having jogged for a while to be sure to be far from them and now well hidden in the trees, Christopher Conch the Wanderer finally stopped and took out their notebook once more. "Clumsy, they are, too."

Darkness was slowly falling, and it was just at around this time that everyone began coming back from their daily assignments. When Calder arrived at his house, dirty and dusty from a day's work in the mines, he expected to find his wife Maple there, perhaps resting on the couch, or practicing her brewing. But when he pushed the wooden door open, the house was dark and silent, empty, except for- Calder crouched, heart speeding up. Except for a shattered plate on the ground. The warrior jumped up and sped out of the door. "Maple!" he yelled, voice breaking. Where was she? Had she been hurt? Was everything alright? "Maple!" he called again, and ran into the center of the village.
There were several people there, who looked at him, alarmed. "Calder? What's wrong?" Marya asked, coming closer. "Maple's disappeared is what's wrong!" Calder half shouted, frantically looking around. She was so fragile, he should have been there to watch over her! Jagged, his wolf, trotted over anxiously, having been alerted by the calls. Marya took a slight step back from the wolf. "Calder, it doesn't make sense." she continued. "I don't see how Maple could simply have disappeared. She was heavily pregnant!" Marya shook her head slowly, while in fact a small smile was forming at the corner of her mouth. She was doing this on purpose. Calder frowned. "But-"
"Oh, Calder ! I was looking for you." the overly tense warrior whirled around and came face-to-face with Joan. She looked exhausted: her hair was tousled and her cheeks were all red. But she looked happy. "There's no need to yell like this, you know." she smiled, and with a slightly shaking hand, she pointed towards the nursery. "You should go, Maple is waiting for you." and that was when the news sank in. Calder froze suddenly, wide eyes fixed on the nursery. "Oh- oh, oh you mean.. The-the.." "Yes, I do mean. Now go!" and Joan gave him a gentle push. The dumbstruck Calder began making his way to the nursery.
Joan turned to Marya. "You know, it wasn't very nice to lie to him. He was really worried." the warrior grinned in response. "Hey, I didn't lie, I just didn't tell him an important fact. He was cute, being all worried for her!" Joan shook her head slowly. "Whatever you say, Marya. Now I've got to get some rest. People really have to stop giving birth and getting hurt on the same day..." she mumbled, making her way to her home slowly. Marya watched her go, hoping she wouldn't fall on her way there.
~
"Maple? You alright?" Calder entered the room quietly. His wife was lying in a bed, a small bundle in her arms. She looked up when her husband entered, and a bright smile illuminated her worn face. "Yes, just a little tired. Come and see your son." and she looked down at the bundle in her arms. Calder felt as if his heart was beating in his throat as he stepped closer to the bed. "He-he's alright? He's healthy?" he asked shakily, barely daring to touch him. "Yes, he's sleeping now. You told me you had an idea for a name if it was a boy." Calder stared and his son. He looked so tiny, and fragile, with rosy skin and tiny tiny fingers curled up into fists. His chest felt all warm. "Yes, how about Ian?" he asked, putting his calloused hand on Maple's cheek. The witch smiled and laid her head on his hand, closing her eyes. "Yes, Ian sounds beautiful. He'll grow to be a great wizard, I'm sure." and as she said those words, Maple felt the cold hand of fear touch her heart. Yes, he was a wizard.
~The next day~
"Rovi, Joan is taking very good care of me, you can leave without worrying so much." Azelle grinned at her older brother- who didn't really seem to be in that mood. "Are you sure? I can ask Myriam to pick another warrior to go instead.." "Rovi, I'm not 6 anymore!" Azelle had finally snapped. "I lived alone for years, do you think it was always a paradise? I got hurt, and took care of myself. Having Joan take care of me is so much more than I've ever had before! I survived alone in the forest for years.. I should be fine for a week, in a village surrounded by people who can protect me and someone who has specifically trained to heal people, don't you think?" There was a pause, during which Rovi's brow was deeply creased in worry. "I'm sorry Azelle, I know what you mean. I was just worried, you know me by now.." Rovi sighed and briefly squeezed his sisters hand. "I should get ready." "Yeah, you should, you worrywart." Azelle grinned and pushed him off.
~
A few hours later, most of the villagers were gathered by the entrance of the village as the three travelers finished saying goodbye to their loved ones. "Take care of yourself!" Rovi told Azelle. "Take care of the cantaloupe, Xzavier!" Tamara told her fellow gatherer. Almtrude was everywhere: "Keep practicing the mandola, Jaymes! Silas, keep out of the sun, take care of yourself and remember you're not useless. Zaos, make sure Iméra gets fed twice a day, and she has to get exercise so take her on a walk every day, even when you're not on patrol duty. Joan, don't overwork yourself, we need you in good shape so don't forget to take time for your own mental and physical health. Alkhas, stop stalling and just tell 'im! Bargas, same goes for you. Arun and Rhys, be good and don't tire your parents out, they're got a lot to do as it is. And Myriam?" out of breath, the wheezy-voiced scout finally turned to her leader and gave her a firm handshake. "I'll bring 'em back safe and sound soon enough, don't worry 'bout us. Concentrate on being the great leader you already are." At those words, Myriam looked down and blushed a little. "Thanks Almtrude, I'll try not to worry too much." she had a lopsided grin. Almtrude nodded energetically. "You better. Now Panto, you remind her to not worry, alright? I'm counting on you." Next to Myriam, the hobbit grinned a little. "I'll do my best, I promise." he replied shyly. Truth be told, he had always been slightly afraid of Almtrude, in the sense that she had such a strong personality and was so outgoing. Almtrude nodded. "Good, good."
The leader of the party turned to the others. "Rovi, Tamara, you ready?" Almtrude asked, unaware they had both been for a while already. "Then perfect, let's go!" and the group checked the last straps, made sure the kittens were comfortably settled in, and began making its way down the slope which marked the edge of the village so-to-speak. "Good luck!" Myriam called out, stomach clenched at the thought of not being able to watch over them there. Pantaleon suddenly poked her in the arms. "Hey, what was that for?" "You're worrying already." "Yeah.. Yeah I am."

In the forest, in fact not very far from the village, two people were struggling through the dense undergrowth. In front was a sullen-looking teen, with blond hair and a long, orange cape, and slowly following behind was a woman in her late thirties, dressed in greens and beige. Her stomach was very large, and as she walked she was ever so watchful not to hit it anywhere. "Zach, please slow down. There's too many branches, I can't keep up." there was a sigh from the boy in front, but he did slow down. "Where exactly are you bringing us?" he asked, turning to look at her. "I heard from scouts back in Mekhanikos that there may be something in this direction. A village, maybe, and that's what I'm hoping we can find." the woman answered. "Hopefully a village who won't be at war with people who want to kill us..." she mumbled under her breath. Zacchaeus pretended he hadn't heard, and turned back to the forest in front of him- only to jump back in terror.
"AAH! WhAT iS ThAT??" in front of him, a human-sized turtle had just appeared! Zacchaeus had gone to stand next to his mother, his hand tightly grabbing her wrist. The turtle- though was it really a turtle? It stood on two legs and wore clothes, as well as carrying a briefcase- shook its head slowly. "Who are you, a more respectful question, it is." it said. Zacchaeus shook his head wildly, disbelief obvious in his eyes. "No no what the heck, you're not real, maybe I'm dreaming- or I'm dead. Yeah, I must be dead. A speaking turtle, what the heck.." the woman, worried of her son's disrespectful behavior, stepped in front of him. "I'm sorry, uh, sir, Zacchaeus is just surprised. I'm Laila Greenfeld, and this is my son, Zach. And you are?.." in truth, she was just as scared as her son, and didn't really believe in this either- but she had seen just as strange things before, and deemed it safer to treat them right.
"Christopher Conch, I am." the mysterious turtle-man replied, seeming a little amused. "To tell you of a village, not far, I have come." Laila stayed dumbstruck for a while, before quickly smiling and nodding awkwardly. "You-you know where there is a village nearby? And it's not one full of robots and golems, is it?" the turtle-man slowly shook his head. "Golems and robots, it has not. Humans and dwarves, it has." Christopher slowly pointed in a direction a little left of the course Laila and Zacchaeus had been following so far. "In this direction, they are, if to find them, you wish." "Thank you, thank you very much, Mr Conch." Laila smiled, though feeling a little awkward about this meeting. Christopher Conch nodded slowly, before turning around and shuffling away. Only a few seconds later, he had disappeared.
"What the hell was that." Zacchaeus and Laila regarded each other, surprised: they had spoken at exactly the same time. Laila let a smile break through. "Good question. Although, he did seem to know what he was saying. I suggest we go where he told us to." "ArE you Crazy?? It might be a trap!!" Zacchaeus didn't seem reassured at all. Laila shook her head. "No, honestly, he did inspire trust. We haven't got any other information anyways." and she gently pried Zach's hand off her arm-it had been so tight that circulation was almost cut off. Zach shook his head quickly. "No, no, I don't believe you. Hey- Where are you going?" "To the village Christopher talked about!" Laila replied, looking behind her shoulder. She hadn't waited for him to start walking. "I'm tired and I just want a safe place in case the baby comes." she added quietly, brow furrowed in worry.
