I think it’s more of people keep trying to start fan wars? The big one I that comes to mind is BlackPink. Reveluvs are pretty good at stopping the arguments before they get bigger, but I’m constantly seeing Blinks in the comments of videos (that don’t even involve them) sending the girls and the fandom hate. I know Reveluvs do a good job at not retaliating and stopping it before it escalates too much, but there are definitely times I feel attacked by Blinks. It’s why, though I enjoy the music, I won’t get into the fandom. I think it’s because they have too much time on their hands, seeing as they don’t get comebacks very often to hype about. They have wars within their own fandom too, so that’s what I meant with “fan wars”. I don’t want to go into a fandom that hates on others, or worse, hates on their self. It’s why we stay away from the OT4’s in the Red Velvet fandom, right?

i... guess? idk if by ot4 you mean -yeri or -wendy because theyre both a problem at times, yeri more prevalently, but still.... i dont think thats a reason to not get into a fandom. and youre singling yourself out too in a way.

I can definitely confirm that things like that do happen, blake - in fact, it's why I avoid a lot of fandoms at the moment and remain a casual fan of most groups. I used to be a blink, but some blinks (not all) were very, very terrible online and scared me away from the group. even fanbases like army are slipping into fanwars both internally and externally and it's really not fun to watch while being a part of them )": hate culture exists within k-pop and we've gotta address it if we ever want to fix it. I think it's a reality that we can't just ignore.

anyways, to answer the main question of recommendations !! I feel like red velvet is a flavor all their own when it comes to their style of music so it's hard to find anything similar, or at least within my music tastes,,,,,but I'd recommend looking into soloists or duos, maybe? they generally have smaller fanbases and it's super easy to remember their names. the closest I can think of to red velvet is sunmi, although her music tends to be much more mature with dark themes rather than silly and fun ones like red velvet does.

for groups,,,,,maybe shinee with married to the music, although I definitely understand being iffy on joining a fandom after the loss of a member. shawols are pretty welcoming, though, and from what I've seen, they love to see new faces around!

if anyone else can think of anyone else that could fit, def add on !! I'm drawing a blank, but I'm sure you guys will have better ideas LOL

Thanks pallaleiga! I’ll check your your recommendations.

I definitely let the fandom have an impact on what fandoms to join. If I’m gonna Stan a group, I’m going to want to talk about the group. If the fandom is toxic with itself and with other fandoms, why would I want to join it? Why would I want to put negativity and stress on myself. It’s why I only occasionally listen to BlackPink and I don’t bother to try and pick a bias. It isn’t worth the hate.

I’m not altogether against joining a fandom with a recent major loss, I just find it harder to relate to those fandoms. It makes me feel awkward because I didn’t know about them before the person left, but the fandom is really sad. I’ll still check them out though!

As for OT4’s, that mainly refers to people who hate Yeri because she joined a year after debut. But I don’t like Wendy haters either. All of the girls deserve love, so anyone who hates on just 1 or 2 members really annoy me...

im aware "hate culture" exists in kpop. it exists in every fandom. im just saying kpop is no different from any other and that i first handedly havent seen this specific kind of hatred.

Sure there are bad eggs in every fandom, but I gotta say there are definitely some worse than others. For example, as an Exo-L and a carat I tend to see a lot more bad things on the Exo-L side. I'd say this is no different from those who like BTS but don't want to be associated with armies which isn't all that rare. Chill Blinks can be hard to find. They exist, but with sites like AKP (too toxic for me in general) and Twitter they tend to get kind of buried.

And yes, shawols are very welcoming to strangers! We'll ramble on to you for hours if you let us :D

Woah. I'm listening to some songs and... Woah. Okay so like the comment section made me cry a little because everyone is so lovely with one another. My heart... Also the vocals we really soothing to listen to. Very pleasant on my ears. I'm really liking Key's solo debut, One of Those Nights (I think), so far, Want You, Our Page (of my gosh the vocals in this song are so beautiful!), Good Evening, and Countless. (Still listening to songs though, so I'll keep you updated.) Also researched into fandom/idol relationship and it is amazing how respectful you all are and how trusting of you they are. It is really refreshing. In Red Velvet, one of the reasons Yeri is my bias is because she cares about her fans and always is checking on them and breaks the rules/goes out of her way just to make a fan happy. And here... Literally all of them are that way. (Okay so the common denominator here is Jonghyun. He clearly passed his group's values in to her. I understand now. :D)

So, from what I understand, are like half the members in the army or something? Is that why there aren't any comebacks right now? so like, they are just in a break, right? I haven't fallen in love with the fandom that is the boy group equivalent of f(x), right? Because that might break me a little bit, as I really am enjoying their music so far. They are going to have a comeback at some point... Right?

Thank you everyone for this suggestion! I will continue my research into fandom tomorrow, but SHINee is 100% on my list of groups to delve deeper into!

All except Taemin are currently enlisted but they will all be back in a little under a year. They'll definitely come back with new music. After all, Minho needs to release his solo album to go with all the others! :D
Taemin's currently in a fun little group called SuperM with a few Exo and Nct members

I actually made a full on Shinee guide if you'd like me to pm it to you. Might be helpful in learning about them c:

That would be great if you don't mind sending it to me! I'm now listening to Tell Me What To Do and I like it too.

I have heard of SuperM. (WayV comment sections are full of talk of it right now and my friends have mixed views of the group). I'll definitely check it out now thoufh, as two groups I'm getting into have members in it! I know some people don't like that SM created the group, but I love talented people and will check it out!

Edit: I have watched some weird stuff in my time... I mean Peek a Boo is my favorite KPOP song (the more isn't CD friendly, is it...), but "Married to the Music" is the weirdest thing I have seen by far. Like what did I just watch?! I feel concerned and confused, and it's kinda everything. lol
