I. Need. HELP! Please...?

I want to put an avatar. Ok. I got a 100x100px image. Good. It's GIF. I "insert" it, and it says "This file cannot be displayed because the extension bmp is not allowed." So I change it to jpg or png etc. I "insert" it again and it says "Image file type mismatch: expected extension bmp but extension jpg given." So I change it back AGAIN to bmp and after I "insert" it AGAIN and it says AGAIN "This file cannot be displayed because the extension bmp is not allowed." What am I supposed to do?

Can I see the picture? My dad has 2 PHd degrees on cumputers, Me and my dad may be able to help.
