The brown dragon hummed a dragon sound as she nudged Baelfyre a few times, then trotted from the cave. She purred at the touch of sun setting down on her, ears twitching and claws digging into dirt a moment. She dipped her head to sift scents of dirt and bugs through her nostrils a moment, then shook her head a few times. She continued that humming sound as she raised her head again, ears still twitching, and trotted on down a path of sorts.

The tan and brown beast watched the blue and black dragon’s head snap up, though the stranger couldn’t seem to see him yet. The wingless dragon huffed to himself, shaking his head a few times and swinging his tail twice. For some reason, this caused a purr to bubble forth from his throat, out his mouth but only loud enough for himself to hear. He yawned a bit, scolding himself, and tilted his head as he continued to study the blue and black dragon, wondering...He huffed to himself again, shaking himself a few times then settling again. He observed the stranger, seeing him begin to focus on the deer leg again. He watched the dragon eat, huffing a bit.

That’s when he decided to move a bit, pushing his head through some bushes or whatever greenery it was. He jumped a little when the blue and black dragon leaped and spread his wings, seeing teeth flash and of course tongue since the stranger had opened his mouth. He snorted at the snake-like action, letting loose a small growl of sorts. His eyes focused in on the stranger’s face, ears twitching a bit so they were no longer flattened to his head. His tail stopped lashing, and he made a sound that would surely have been a sigh, had he been human. He muttered “Baelfyre...And who might you be?” he then asked.

Being on the larger side had its problems for the gorgeous male dragon...It meant, if he weren’t careful, prey animals or even humans could easier see him approaching. If he was downwind, that was fine, but sometimes they turned and grazed facing that way then...Shaking himself, the golden and darker dragon snorted, blue eyes narrowing a moment as wings shuddered against his sides. He left his cave, unfolding his wings to keep his balance steady as he began to run.

Maleena Briarwood

⋯⋯⋯⋯⚗️⋯⋯⋯⋯

Maleena felt a shiver run through her as the man referenced 'The Scourge' with complete seriousness. Perhaps the great beast would indeed be destroyed, but it was clear the Briarwood family was expecting her to be the person to do it. Maleena was pretty sure she did not want that responsibility. Dragon hunting was in her family history, sure, but the last time a Briarwood had joined in an attempt to kill a Titan Dragon, the same one that was causing these tremors now, it had not gone well for anyone in Multenera. No, she'd focus on hunting a small dragon for now. If somehow she was lucky enough to survive her first hunt she could worry about Hotei later.

As they began to move at a canter, Leena was surprised by a sudden compliment from Jack.
"I'm glad you think so, it nearly cost me an arm." She responded offhandedly before elaborating, noting the curiosity in his tone. She may have found a bear instead of a dragon in that cave, but at least she hadn't emerged completely empty-handed. "The bear thought it could take a swipe at me, so I skinned it. I could have got a decent price for the pelt, but I thought it might have more practical uses. Seems I was right. " Of course, she would be much happier if she never went anywhere near that mountain. Mountains were treacherous at the best of times, even more so when there was a rage-filled Titan dragon around.

She listened carefully as the man detailed his previous encounter with the particular dragon they were looking for.
"By stables?" Maleena sounded surprised, "That's rather brave of the beast. You'd think they'd learn to steer clear of human settlements after we nearly wiped their entire kind out."
Small and blue sounded like the sort of thing Maleena could handle. She immediately glanced upwards when Jack mentioned watching the sky. It was bizarre to imagine some great beast flying above them, blocking out the sunlight.
"I know I've never seen a dragon before but somehow I wager I can tell the difference."
She remarked with a touch of sarcasm in response to his... joke?
"I'm not spooked quite that easily."
She glanced upwards again before continuing to speak.
"So, when we find this dragon.. what's the game plan? Crossbow bolt to the throat? Immobilise it by taking out its wings?"She paused to think for a second.Did it have hard scales or feathers? That's probably an important thing to know. We need to find its weak spots." She really had read those books her grandmother had handed her.

Feroz

Feroz awoke in the dark, cold depths of an underground cavern, completely disorientated. It was strange... This was not the sort of place he'd usually choose to rest. The serpent-like dragon liked to squirm under a pile of boulders high on the mountain, hiding him from site but still allowing the sunlight to penetrate the cracks between the rocks once the sun rose again. What would lead him to sleep here? He tried to cast his mind back to the events that would lead him to this deep cave, but his brain was still too fuzzy from sleep. He could remember Io weeping and then, later, yelling in what seemed to him like both anger and joy at the same time whilst Feroz tried to force her away from fire and destruction all around. Fire and destruction caused by... Hotei? That was right, the great Titan dragon's rider, and Io's friend, had been slaughtered. He would have to check on his rider-in-training, he knew that humans were much more fragile than normal when they were like this. As he took the long, winding passage-way out of the cave system he had slept in his environment began to feel more and more off. Of course, Navem was already an unfamiliar area to him, he had only forced his young rider here to stop her from being burnt to cinders along with the rest of Heartessa, but that wasn't what was sparking this strange sense of unease.

Emerging from the cave through a clump of sharp, overgrown grass a series of memories flashed to the forefront of Feroz's mind. Tales of dragons being slaughtered mercilessly, in far greater numbers than ever before. Hotei's destruction of the grand capital of Multenera hadn't destroyed the Underground, only conjured more members. He had been shut away by the sorcerers, deep in a volcano, but the other dragons had been left to pay the price. Io cursing at him amidst pleas for him to hide away, hibernate until it was safe enough to emerge. Usually the girl had done her best to conceal any affection she'd held for the 'reptile', but she'd made little attempt here. He'd finally given in when the last of his friends had disappeared, in a trance or murdered, Feroz didn't know which. A deep, unexplained pit formed in the dragon's stomach as he realised there would be no checking on Io. He didn't know how long he'd slept in the deep, dark cave but he was certain it had been longer than the average human's lifetime. He could only hope that the foolish girl had lived a full lifetime, and not gone and done anything stupid that got her killed.

Dusk's jaw dropped open in comical astonishment as Aria deflected the projectile with her bracer, looking like some badass action hero from one of mom's old folk tales. She taunted him then, ending with an affectionate comment. The boy put his hands over his heart dramatically. "Aww you missed me? Well I'll just have to come down there and make you un-miss me!"
He flung open the other, un-broken panel of his window and was about to vault out of there. Before he could leap from the windowsill, however, his eyes wandered to the ground far below. Grinning sheepishly, Dusk stepped back into the safety of his room. He would take the stairs instead.
"What! How dare you insult my cooking," He exclaimed, making expressions of rage so exaggerated they were impossible to take seriously. "... But I might forgive you if you're serious about the candy idea! I've always wanted to make my window more colorful."
Aria seemed to be planning another theft, but quickly interrupted herself and called him over. Her voice sounded concerned now - it appeared she'd seen someone sleeping on the ground. Dusk didn't need to be told twice. He sprinted down the stairs, ignoring his sister Dawn's order of "Be quiet!", and burst out the door with the most dramatic exit.
"I'm here!" The teenager proclaimed, running over to where the blonde woman lay. "Don't worry, we'll protect you during your nap! ... Hey Aria, are you trying to wake her up?"

Xiaoyue | Scale Descendant | Female | 20 | Navem Plaza - Aria, Dusk
Xiaoyue registered that someone was talking to her before actually realizing what was said and blinked slowly. "Ah, I wasn't napping," her response was few seconds delayed as she tried to place if she had ever seen the two around in anything more than passing, "just waiting to make sure the tremors were finished before I got up." She stretched one of her legs out along the ground, making the bell around her ankle jingle softly as she did. These two certainly seemed the kind sorts--bothering to come check on her even amidst the crowd and all--but it was safer not to mention the truth of what had left her so disoriented. "After all, it would hardly do for me to start dancing and end up injured because I fell, yes?" A reasonable enough explanation punctuated by a soft smile and a slight tilt of her head.

It was around this moment that everything actually snapped back into focus, the haze of her visions finally fully gone and she was able to really take in anything about the two. They seemed to be close enough to her in age, she had assumed from the woman's voice alone that at least she was a bit older and both of them were a fair bit bigger in comparison to her own petite build. She held her hand out towards them. "I don't suppose I could trouble either of you for a hand up as well? I'm afraid all I have to offer for your kindness is a dance or a story but I would appreciate it much the same."

Adam Medimare | Human | Male | 32 | Docks -> Plaza - Alex, Locke
Even with the delay it wasn't long before the cargo was unloaded and his crew back to working order. "Extended shore rotations, the ship is not to be left unguarded. I don't want any stowaways poking around our hold again or we're sailing a few heads lighter on our next leg." A chorus of ayes from the crew and he turned and walked further down the docks. His eyes scanned the crowd now that he could devote his attention to the city proper. His first mate was playing cards with members of the crews of the other ships at the docks and judging from his posture they were playing right in his usual routine--no doubt in a few minutes time he'd have his pockets lined with gold--and it seemed most of the crowd here was comprised of sailors and dock workers picking up from the earthquake and then going about their routines.

Most of the crowd, at least. A woman in fine clothing walking with a cane caught his eye, an aristocrat and an easier mark than most on her own by the looks of her. How unfortunate for him that she was rather clearly not on her own, someone he assumed to be her bodyguard next to her. Well, those two would simply have to be separated. He made his way first to the card game. "Aye, Alex--cash in yer devil's luck. I've a job fer ya now." He was loud enough to make himself heard to the other players in the card game before lowering his voice close to his ear. "There's a pretty mark heading this way from the plaza, noble sort. I'll shake 'er guard, come in when ya see yer openin'." He clapped a hand on his shoulder and smiled as he pulled away. Without the knowledge of his intentions he seemed jovial and pleasant. He removed the bandanna from his head as he weaved through the crowd at the docks, tying it around his wrist to hide his pirate's brand and then holding it to him with his other hand to feign injury.

He emerged from the crowd not too far from the bodyguard. "Beggin' yer pardon," he called over to get her attention, "I don't suppose ya know th' nearest doctor? None of th' other sailors know their way around town and I was injured in the quake." A believable enough lie, aided by an added wince when he lifted his wrist ever so slightly as a demonstration.

//Jack Burnfield//human rouge//earth, boosted jump, minor telekinesis//location/tags: the start of the road out of town/Maleena

Jack turned his head to completely face the woman next to him, an impressed look crossing it as he raised an eyebrow. Maleena was single-handedly admitting to having taken down a bear, a feat that rarely came about even by those skilled with weapons. Despite the rouge’s doubt, however, the coat and Maleena’s expression appeared genuine. Plus she did have an injury to prove that something had happened. “I was right to have chosen you for this job, then...” he muttered. Whether she heard it or not the blond didn’t care.

When the topic switched back to the dragon a thoughtful expression rose to Jack’s face. “Yes, you’d think that they would try to hide their existence for as long as possible. It’s concerning, I think. It could have something to do with attracting attention so they could raise some sort of army-“ The man cleared his throat as he realised he was getting ahead of himself with suspicions. “Or... they just woke up and didn’t want to catch their own food. The stable is far away enough that people in the city couldn’t directly witness anything, and I suppose even they would know that stables would have horses in limited areas.” The traveller’s golden eyes moved to watch the side of the road as their horses clopped on. “Plus it’d be rare for someone working at a stable to take on a dragon. Though this woman sure shouted at it.”

A small smile made its way onto his lips at the memory before it grew slightly at Maleena’s sarcasm. “Right right, was just making sure since you’ve never actually seen a dragon before.” Jack laughed. For some reason he felt more comfortable on the road, away from the straying eyes of greedy thieves and arrogant aristocrats.

His tone was a little more serious when their plan was brought up again and a hand moved to settle on his chin calculatingly. “Well for starters, we can’t get any information from the stable. The beast blew one of the walls clean off and the horses scattered, their keepers taking off after them. The dragon itself was knocked out long enough for me to get a little bit of blood, and it was ice magic. That’s why I went to your shop to trade it for fire.” He explained. “The dragon definitely had soft scales, whatever ones it could reach with its breath had some icy covering though. Had to hand it to the devil, it had least prepared for an attack. That did leave its face and head exposed though, as well as its neck right behind it.” Jack paused after spouting the information, considering where they should aim because of that. “I don’t think it would have put ice on its wings though, since that would limit some do if he patterns. Plus it was long and had short legs. It’s settled then, aim for the wings to get it down, then aim for the head.”

Jack pulled on his reins as the structure came into view, a few spots on the ground ahead still glazed in ice. He got off his horse, then nodded to his companion to do the same. “We’ll lead our rides until we can make sure the coast is clear.” He advised. In all honesty Jack was a little nervous to come face to face with the dragon again, especially since He hadn’t even been exposed to a breath power yet.

Lukas have a cross growl at the apparent carelessness of the other dragon. The musical notes that played from the winged dragon’s mouth falling short as parts of the tune were reinforced with scratchiness. ‘The name’s Lukas.’ He thought back telepathically. This ‘Baelfyre’ did not offer to make his intentions known, although the striped reptile admitted that he couldn’t exactly pinpoint what his own were. Lukas eventually dropped the threatening act, flapping his wings a bit to show he was still prepared to use them in a fight if one broke out. “Did you just wake up?” Lilas eventually asked, having made his way to the opposite side of the deer again.

He yawned a few times, wondering why, then tilted his head. He nodded at Lukas, muttering ‘Nice to meet you...’ then trailing off. He seemed to think for a moment, about something, then shook his head. Baelfyre no longer lashed his tail, but it continued to flick. Sometimes, it was still with just the fluffy end twitching. He nearly huffed again, yet cut that sound short from happening. He tilted his head again, then nodded. “I believe I am just awoken.” he said, then his belly grumbled. “And hungry...” he finished sheepishly.

Maleena Briarwood
Tags: Jack
⋯⋯⋯⋯⚗️⋯⋯⋯⋯

Maleena couldn't help but look a little bit smug as the man looked impressed at her feat of bear-slaying. He didn't need to know that the bear-killing hadn't been planned, and it was simply instinct and a little bit of luck that had sent the crossbow bolt into the bear's throat. Every time she remembered the scene she couldn't help but be even more surprised that she'd actually lived to see another day.

Upon the idea of an 'army' of dragons Leena scrunched her entire face up.
"No way,"she decided firmly, "If dragons could work together cooperatively enough to form an army, the human race would have died out a long time ago."
His next suggestion was far more reasonable, she expected dragons to have some sort of beastly, instinctive intelligence, that made sense, but a dragon that understood it could make a scene to amass a force of its brethren, that was too much. Dragons may be huge, strong, magical beings, but it was humans that had the intelligence and the strength in numbers. They had outwitted them once and they would do it again.

After catching Maleena off-guard with his laughter, it seemed the most genuine thing he'd done so far, Jack began to answer her questions, coming up with a decent plan. She allowed herself to look slightly angry as he spoke of the destroyed stable, the first dragon seen for a century popped into existence and immediately it had destroyed something, cheering up a little as he told her its scales were soft.
"Wings, then head. Got it." She repeated, pleased to have a plan. Knowing where to aim her crossbow always made things a lot easier.

Even knowing what had happened, Maleena still had to place one hand over her mouth to stifle a sound of shock upon seeing the ruined stables and, smaller yet perhaps even more terrifying, those unnaturally icy patches on the grass. She hardly needed prompting to slide off her horse, more than happy to stop feeling so exposed up there. She'd jumped at the opportunity to hunt a dragon, yet a large part of her wanted never to even capture a glimpse of it. She thrust that part deep down. As they led the horses forwards, her hands tightly gripping the reins, Maleena scanned the area, nervously glancing every which way for any other signs of the dragon.
"Smart of you to get the fire magic." She commented softly, resisting the urge to start whispering. "With any luck that'll weaken the dragon's ice breath. I think that's how it works."
