Skepluvi - 131 - Event 024

Postby AMemeAmongMen » Sat Sep 28, 2019 8:32 am

Intake Report: Scars Along Entire Body
" As uncommon as fighting was, it still happened. If watching other, smaller animals fight was so gruesome, imagine seeing what huge animals like Skepluvi could manage in damage to each other. This Queen was no exception to the world of wounds, they were covered from head to toe in battle scars, some old and some new, they had abused her for quite some time. Despite the extensive injuries, they were quite sweet and easy to handle. Though as they were lead along past the other cages, a volunteer had knocked into a crate, creating a large banging sound. This Skepluvi took off, knocking more than one person over in the process. The poor thing was terrified of loud sounds, so some sensitivity training would be a good idea."

Taming Prompt:
It wasn't too soon after the facility had settled from the arrival of Pangea, were we notified of another rescue that was being sent to us. Still reeling from the events pirror, we quickly took quite a few extra measures in order to safely welcome our newest transport. We were actually expecting a case similar to that of our other rescue Skepluvi, but upon arrival we were honestly surprised at the docile nature that the Skepluvi exhibited. She was completely content with us handling and looking over her, and even seemed to enjoy the extra attention. Due to her intense scarring, she had already been checked up and tested on for illnesses or disease, but all had come up negative. Thankfully, this meant we could skip over quarantine and proceed with her examinations regarding any trauma she received. In the following week, we were able to successfully set up a large enough area for our Behavioral Assessment to take place. Due to my success with our prior rescue, I was selected to carry out the following evaluation.

Upon my entrance, I Immediately noted the actual size of the room, and how immense it appeared with it’s sterile white walls and flooring; quite a number of objects also littered the room, ranging in sizes and uses. The Skepluvi, named Myai, was being coaxed into the opposite side of this expansion. She appeared to be quite nervous, but was still eagerly allowing herself to be soothed by the handler. Noticing my arrival, the assistant signaled the beginning of the exam and Myai was let out of her restraints.

01: Observe
Myai appeared to have become agitated upon the handlers absence and stood stark still at the door they exited. It took her approximately three minutes before she dared to look around, and finally, she ended up spotting me. Myai took six strides to place herself at my side, passing and stepping on the strewn objects around her, taking no notice. She quickly situated herself, to my pleasure, on top of my feet.
For as long as a person was in the same room as her, it appeared she’d be okay. I marked her down for a couple precautions, but overall, continued on.

02: Sound
Due to her previous reaction, we decided to tone down this section of the assessment. Typically, we try to associate the Skepluvi with certain loud noises that they may hear around their stable or out in the fields, but for Myai we decided to tone down and use sounds with low or moderate pitch. Along with the sounds, we decided to implement touch and aggression testing, for they do go hand in hand.

After writing down some behavioral issues I had begun noticing, I bent down and coxed Myai to stand once again, she appeared somewhat concerned at my actions, but I assume she believed us to be leaving. Myai gently nipped out at my sides to convey me to follow her, much like a mother Skepluvi would do to her young, but I stood still. A beep suddenly echoed out into the room, and a recording of falling branches proceeded to play. Myai stood alert, but probably due to the sounds natural nature, appeared unshook. It was a welcomed relief that we wouldn’t have to drug or restrain her every thunderstorm. The proceeding beep’s carried onwards with varying levels of sound following, but she had decent to normal reactions. The last sound would be where our boundaries were pressed. I started to feel anxiety blossom in my chest as we grew closer to the end, I didn’t want to cause Myai additional distress, but I knew we had to get a grasp of what would need to be worked on. Letting out a large sigh, I sandwiched Myai’s head against my hands, just as the final beep signaled the true test. I drew myself back and let out reassuring words as Myai verd towards the speaker. A whistle shot through the room, and the peaceful atmosphere was broken. Myai darted through the room, circling me, and then expanding outwards until she had run into a pole towards one of the corners. This allowed me enough time to grab onto her lead in attempted to calm her as she struggled up into a standing position, but she darted again, this time with me in tow. Using my body weight, I managed to get us running in a circular motion, which appeared to calm Myai down. After about fifteen minutes of keeping pace with Myai, she finally settled on top of my coat, which had been abandoned by me sometime during our little exercise. She no longer acted stressed, but did exhibit some nervous behavior. Despite this all, Myai didn’t lash out negatively towards me, which grants her a pass.
My fellow staff must have decided this was enough, and entered the room to grab and relocate Myai to her stable. She was relent at first, but exited happily after being bribed with honey. I, on the other hand, had to do a couple piles of paperwork before being allowed home.
----
I was later notified that the company decided to postpone the rest of the exam until Myai could handle “command” sounds. She’s recently been signed up for several therapeutic riding trails and a couple of training exercises, which will substitute sounds she’s uncomfortable with in favor of words and phrases. While this will be a long journey for her, I am comfortable to say that Myai will take leaps and bounds towards her recovery under our care.
