t of terrorspirit's belly. cedarspark looked around for cloudp
aw for help, but he couldn't find the white apprentice in the
crowd. he looked back at terrorspirit. with a grave expreress
ion, he began preparing the body.
xxmeanwhile, cloudpaw searched for thornpaw in the gathe
red cats. she saw stormheart run off to find turtlefrost, and
then her eyes settled on thornpaw. cloudpaw moved on the
outside of the crowd and slunk through towards her brothe
r. "thornpaw," she whispered.
xxthornpaw turned around. he was frowning, but for once
his eyes didn't seem to be hard. "yeah?"
xxcloudpaw threw her head on his shoulder and he did the
same in a sort of hug. cloudpaw's eyes glistened. "it wasn't
pipitpaw," she murmured. "and now he's out there, all alone
and scared."
xxthornpaw's face fell. he had been thinking of pipitpaw, b
ut cloudpaw's mention of him just made it worse.
xx"it's our fault we didn't do anything," cloudpaw squeaked.
xx"no, it's not. we couldn't. don't blame yourself."
xxthe apprentices went quiet, hugging each other as their
hearts broke.
xx"the killer's still here," ocelotstep said. this was no accide
nt. the body in the camp and the remaining bits of deathbe
rry in terrorspirit's meal said otherwise.
xx"we exiled the wrong cat," speckledstar breathed, ears fla
ttening in shame.
xxterrorspirit's body laid still atop herbs. its unseeing eyes
seemed to bore into speckledstar's soul, asking him why. wh
y wasn't the right cat exiled? why did you let this happen to
me? then cedarspark shut her eyes. but speckledstar couldn'
t shake the thoughts. he withdrew, making his way up to th
e top of the highledge where he solemnly called a meeting.
xx"the killer is still among us. may starclan rest terrorspirit'
s soul. we must find who did this."
xxyowls erupted. accusations, agreements.
xx"quiet!" speckledstar was on edge, inside and out. "does
anyone have any theories? with evidence?"
xxsilence. speckledstar's stomach churned. the voting was
wrong. there was no evidence. pipitpaw, an innocent cat, wa
s out there scared, alone, and on the run. but what other op
tion did speckledstar have? he couldn't just do nothing.
xx"we'll have a vote. same procedure as last time," the leade
r finally managed to say.
xxheronpaw. heronpaw. thornpaw. thornpaw. thornpaw.
xxspeckledstar didn't want to acknowledge the trend. he did
n't want this to even be happening. he didn't want to announ
ce the exile of a cat that could be innocent. but the clan wa
s convinced.
xx"thornpaw, you are hereby exiled from thunderclan for the
murder of your clanmates."
xxthe apprentice jerked away from his position of leaning ag
ainst cloudpaw and his stomach dropped. "i knew you'd blam
e me!" he frantically looked around at his clanmates with a
fire behind his eyes. "i'm not sick. i couldn't do this!"
xx"thornpaw..." cloudpaw's whisper trailed off as she seeme
d to shrink.flicker flicker.
xx"you just want me to leave because you don't like me. self
ish cats! karma will come to you!" a nudge by some cat sent
thornpaw running out of the camp. his clanmates watched hi
m go, their paws frozen to the ground. cloudpaw let the tea
rs slither down her face, unable to look at her clanmates wh
o had let both of her siblings be sentenced to death.
xxnot far from the camp, thornpaw was running. his paws p
ounded against the leaf-strewn ground. if he wasn't distract
ed by thoughts of the betrayal, he would have noticed the
sound of pawsteps on both sides.
another innocent cat is gone, thunderclan... how many wi
ll die as a result of your actions?
