she didn't really need to look up. with a terrible joke like that,
she knew it was heronpaw.
xxstill, she was too stunned to say anything in reply. she drew
back when it really hit her. swiftspark was dead, and there was
nothing she could do now. she shut her eyes.
xx"oh, starclan," heronpaw whispered. the truth was dawning
on him, too. he wished there was something lighthearted to sa
y. he almost wished he hadn't left camp. he didn't want to look
at the corpse anymore.
xxafter a while of silence, cloudpaw leaned forward slightly an
d sniffed swiftspark's body. that gash was no accidentβcloudp
aw noticed the minute scratches on swiftspark's body, especial
ly around his paws. cloudpaw's eyes widened when the smell
registered. there was the unfamiliar scent of what she assume
d was kittypet, but the thunderclan scent overpowered it. did a
thunderclan cat do this to swiftspark?
xx"heronpaw," cloudpaw meowed. "smell him. i-i think one of
our clanmates killed swiftspark."
xxheronpaw forced himself to look back at the body and sniff.
the smell of death overwhelmed him, but he could still detect
the kittypet and thunderclan scents.
xx"well, that's a plot twist."
xxcloudpaw looked at the tabby apprentice with somewhat of
a glare. she wasn't interested in his jokes at a moment like th
is.
xx"hey, what's that?" heronpaw had moved to the right and wa
s looking at a strange orange object with what looked to be fa
ke green leaves at the top. curious, he sniffed it, glad to smell
something other than death. still, the outcome wasn't great. th
e thing reeked of dog.
xxcloudpaw looked at it with narrowed eyes, but didn't move
to follow heronpaw. "we need to get swiftspark back to camp."
xxheronpaw looked back at his clanmate, but her tone got the
better of him. "alright." he sent one glance back at the orange
thing before returning to where he had been to help cloudpaw.
together, the apprentices hoisted swiftspark onto their should
ers, slowly carrying him back to camp.
xx"help!" cloudpaw cried when they were only a few fox-lengt
hs away from the bramble entrance.
xxthe group of cats gathered in the clearing started. turtlefro
st ran towards the call first, followed by pineflower and the res
t of the cats.
xx"great starclan!" pineflower yowled. "what happened?" she
rushed to help the apprentices carry swiftspark.
xxthe apprentices waited until they laid the body down near th
e camp's center to break the news. "someone in this camp mur
dered him. you can smell it," cloudpaw said.
xxthe gathered cats' eyes widened. speckledstar leaned forwa
rd to verify cloudpaw's statement. could one of his clanmates
really have killed their own friend? his stomach sank when his
question was answered. yes, one of them. but who?
xx"let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here
beneath the highledge for a clan meeting!" the leader shouted
as he rapidly ascended the path to the highledge. cats were n
ow gathering in the clearing, filing out of their respective dens.
xx"as you may tell, one of our own is dead. killed by one of his
own! smell him, if you don't believe me. there is a killer among
us, thunderclan!"
xxa gasp sounded within the clearing. speckledstar was dram
atic, yes, but his message was conveyed. a few cats approach
ed the body to confirm what he had said. suspicious glances
were passed around.
xxlavenderscent's heart skipped a beat. she had just seen her
brother the night before, and she had wanted to say hello to
him. but now his ears were deaf.
xx"who killed him?" ocelotstep shouted, looking up at speckle
dstar.
xx"why don't we have a vote?" dandeliontail said before his lea
der could respond. he knew about cutstripe's attacks on thund
erclan moons ago. the murders had been solved by a series of
eliminations, and though rather inefficient, it had worked. per
haps, starclan willing, it could again. this time, though, they'd
do better. dandeliontail didn't want to exile innocent cats; this
time, they needed reasons. evidence. it was only right.
xxspeckledstar swallowed and nodded. "yes," he said. "we will
conduct a vote."
xx"who?" someone cried.
xx"thornpaw!" someone else yelled.
xx"please, be civil! take some time to think before accusing yo
ur clanmates like this! i'm not accepting votes until sundown,"
speckledstar said. he climbed down from the highledge to disc
uss; he needed to know more.
xxtensions were high the whole day. only one hunting patrol
was sent out, but few felt like they could eat. cloudpaw helped
cedarspark prepare swiftspark's body, filling his mouth with
pleasant-smelling herbs and cleaning his wound to the best of
their ability. it lay in the center of camp, awaiting burial.
xxfinally, dusk was approaching. the fruits of thunderclan's sp
eculation were about to be revealed.
xxspeckledstar returned to his post on the highledge. he did
n't even have to call for a meeting. everyone was already listen
ing attentively to his next words.
xx"i will call upon each cat. they will say their vote and no mor
e. just a name. ocelotstep, cast your vote."
xxspeckledstar kept track of the votes in his head as he went
through the names of his clanmates. at first, he knew thornpa
w was going to go. but soon, votes for pipitpaw evened out w
ith those for thornpaw's, then "won" out. now, it was speckled
star's turn. just like a few other cats, he said, "i will abstain."
but unlike them, he had to add the wretched result. one of the
ir own was to be exiled. and they had to hope they were the
right cat.
xxspeckledstar shifted his weight on his paws. no use keeping
everyone on the edge of their nests. "pipitpaw, you are hereby
exiled from thunderclan. i'm sorry."
xx"i didn't do it! what makes you all think i did it?" pipitpaw cr
ied, frantically looking about his clanmates. no, this couldn't
be happening to him. "i knew i should have never trusted you!"
without much of a goodbye, he ran out of the camp. he sent
one glance back, making eye contact with his siblings. his goo
dbye.
xxwhen he was far enough from camp, pipitpaw stopped runn
ing. he caught his breath, fighting back tears. it all happened
so fast. i can't stay in clan territory. they'll all think i'm a murd
derer. no one will trust me here, the tabby tom thought when
he regained his senses. he let the tears run down his face. wh
ere could he go? he was lost, alone! pipitpaw buried his face in
his paws, frozen in place. there he stayed until dawn broke, sh
edding daylight on his surroundings. but little on him. he felt
cold inside. betrayed. scared. so scared. he stayed where he w
as until his stomach growled. he got to his paws, sniffing the
air for any prey scents. something smelled off. when he turned
his green gaze to where he thought the source was, he was me
t with a small white molly. two unfamiliar cats were behind her.
pipitpaw stumbled back as it hit him. he recognized their scent
from swiftspark's body. the molly unsheathed her claws.
xx"now, where do you think you're going?"
is this the only spark destined to burn out?
you've exiled an innocent, thunderclan! for shame!
