for generations, the clan of the hyperborea has been a different type of clan, unlike any other. this clan doesn't believe in the
same things most clans do, starclan and the like. instead, they believe that a gryphon is their deity and they worship a stone c
arving that was found by their ancestors. due to their odd beliefs, the clan is strictly against the harm of birds, especially as p
rey. hunting birds is punishable by exile or even death. their oddities don't end there either. their ranks are different as well as
their tendency to keep avian 'pets' as status symbols. instead of just a leader, the clan has a royal family made up of a king an
d a queen with their prince and princess kits
. their deputy is a jarl, their healers are druids, and the healers' apprentices are c
alled thanes
. the warriors are separated into male and female roles, freyrs and freyas respectfully, and their apprentices are c
alled wards
. the mothers and kits are apart of the nursery while the elders make up the rookery. aside from their different bel
iefs and social structure, the clan acts like any other with patrols and hunting parties to keep them sustained. allies and enemi
es can be found anywhere so they keep a close eye on their borders and train their apprentices vigorously so they grow strong.

these cats tend to be very hardy and strong to endure the rather harsh winters and bountiful summers that make up the territ
ory. their fur often fits in the category of medium to long length, long enough to endure winter while short enough when shed
to enjoy the warmer summers. colors also tend to be more earthy and neutral tones to help them blend into the surroundings,
sometimes stripes or spots are seen, but more solid colored coats are more prevalent. white markings are often seen as well, e
speically in those who come from the north where more snow is seen year-round. amber and green eyes are the most common
while blue and yellow seem to be the minority. it's fairly rare to find a cat with wild markings and blue eyes in these woods.

Newleaf

Newleaf warmth is here with a vengeance- albeit a very calm and graceful vengeance. Prey has started to reemerge, as well as certain cats, and the clans are more likely to run into each as the Earth renews itself. The world is being handed over to the young and green for safe keeping, elders passing on wisdom to the youth as the Earth trusts her hidden treasures to soft new buds and shoots.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

    𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐠𝐨.
Duckpaw watched the raggedy old tom climb the steep cliffs of the mountain. For such an old cat, Duckpaw couldn't believe the clan he claimed to be residing in would let him leave the elder's den, let alone the campground itself. Clearly, her parents didn't care, but then again, both seemed to care about very little. When the clan had fallen to bits and Juncopaw and Rookpaw had followed Loonlight, the fraught line between her parents seemed to snap. Her mother- tall, proud- said nothing, and her father walked with his shoulders sagged and his head down.
"Not much further now," the tom said in his raspy voice, making Duckpaw jump and snap her head up to look at him. He smiled at her, trotting ahead. Duckpaw caught sight of her mother's deep frown, before she shook her head, and continued on. Duckpaw paused, waiting for her dad to catch up. She gave him an encouraging smile, rewarded with a weak one in return as she pressed against his side, the pair walking in step as they followed the cats.
"It's not your fault, you know," she said, quietly, "Juncopaw and Rookpaw are old enough to make their own decisions now. We all are." Her father gave her another smile, and touched his nose to her ear, before The Stranger turned abruptly through a tunnel. Addersong paused, momentarily, and then followed through after him, cautious Duckpaw and Summitstar bringing up the rear behind them.
They emerged into a high-walled basin, sun shining down on patchy grass and mountain wildflowers blooming, a single tree standing out among craggly rock formations. A black and white she-cat was watching a tabby molly practice battle moves with a grey and white she-cat. Nearby, a large, burly queen was chatting amicably with a blue pointed molly, while their kits rough and tumbled together, the large brown tom smashing a moss ball across camp with a powerful swipe of his paw. A cream-coloured queen slept under the tree, dozing in the shade watched over by a caliby molly with her sleeping kits curled into her flank, while a ginger tom descended the basin's cliffside trail, and paused, upon seeing the strange cats. The two fighting mollies stopped abruptly, turning to the new group.
"You left the camp?" The ginger tom asked, incredulous. The Stranger gave a janky shrug.
"I deliver those who are lost," he said, sweeping past the other tom without so much as another word. The black and white molly turned to the new cats, catching Duckpaw's eye and mouthing 'weird'. She gave her a timid smile, shrinking closer to her father, who tried to draw himself taller as the ginger tom moved closer, eyes narrowing as he studied them. He smelled strongly like herbs, like Loonlight had, although he seemed more bristly than JaggedClan's medicine cat.
"You have clan smell," he said, loud enough to draw the stocky molly to her feet. Even Addersong balked at the sheer sight of her, towering above the other cats with muscles thick and rippling under her pelt as she moved closer. When she spoke, her voice was smooth and rich, but there was a hardness to it that made Duckpaw shrink in on herself even more.
"Can we help you?" She asked, standing shoulder to shoulder with the ginger tom, who was dwarfed by her sheer size.
"Yes," Summitstar managed after a moment of struggling to form words, "my name is Summitstar. I am- I was the leader of JaggedClan. It's... disbanded now. This is my daughter, Duckpaw and my... mate, Addersong. We. We need a home. Is your leader here? Could we talk to them?"
"She's on patrol," the ginger said, ears flattening, "don't think that means you can try anything."
"Easy, Poppywish," said the big she-cat, turning to Duckpaw with kind eyes, "my name is Minkfur, warrior and queen for NorthernClan. This is Poppywish, our medicine cat. He'll check you over for injuries while you were travelling, and I won't hear any argument about that. Viridianfire, go with him. You can stay in the medicine den until Sleetstar returns."
"Thank you," said Addersong, although there was a stiffness to her tone. Duckpaw supposed her mother wasn't used to feeling intimidated or out of her depth, wasn't used to being given orders. Duckpaw simply smiled at the big she-cat, as a pair of curious heads appeared near her paws. Even though the kits couldn't have been apprentice-aged yet, the tom was almost as tall as Duckpaw, and his sister not close behind him.
    "Who's this?" He asked curiously.
"Some travelers, Sprucekit. Poppywish is going to check them for injuries before they meet Sleetst-"
"Cool! Do you need help, Poppywish?" Sprucekit's eyes glittered as the ginger tom spluttered, shaking his head rapidly while Minkfur struggled to contain a smile.
"I do not. This way." He swished his tail, turning to hurry quickly back toward the cliffs, leaving the pouting kit in his wake. Duckpaw stepped after her mother, wandering calmly after Poppywish up the incline toward the medicine den. She turned, on the ledge outside, to let her father past, looking down into the camp where Minkfur was still watching her, kits playing once more. She gave the large molly a tired smile, and ducked into the den after her parents.

    -

Midnightblaze's gaze was fond as he watched Koishimmer in the camp below, walking shoulder to shoulder with Viridianfire as the fierce molly took her obligatory turn around camp. She was healing fast, and even though her scratched eye didn't seem like it was of much use to her anymore, she seemed happy, like she was dealing with it. Winderstrike crossed toward them, carrying a mouse- no doubt for pregnant Sunnynose- sharing a laugh with the two mollies before he continued on. As he scurried up past Midnightblaze, Koishimmer's attention followed him. The black tom froze as his daughter settled on him, and he anticipated a scowl, but instead, she smiled, so briefly that he might has well have missed it. He startled, as she glanced away, and his own warm smile returned.
"Deep in thought?" He looked up, surprised to see Summitsky cresting the path to his jutting ledge, settling down next to him to look out over the campground.
"Guess so," he replied, smiling up at his taller friend, "things okay?" Summitsky smiled back, with a small nod. Ever since Sleetstar had broken off their relationship, Summitsky seemed less melancholy, as ironic as that was. He moved freer, smiled more, but Midnightblaze knew he still missed what could have been. Even now, he caught Summitsky's gaze travelling to his ex-mate, where she was sitting with their kits and laughing at something Butterflypaw had said. Midnightblaze smiled at him, leaning their shoulders together.
"They get big so fast, don't they?" He said, and Midnightblaze chuckled a little, nodding his head.
"It sneaks up on you," he admitted, "watching my girls... it seemed like one minute they were just little kits, bumbling along helplessly, and then you blink and suddenly they're all grown. I watch Koishimmer sometimes, and I think about how she was when she was a kit. Her, and Prim and Selene. Troublemakers, the three of them. And now... well. Now she's all grown. She doesn't need me to bail her out of trouble."
"You're still her father," Summitsky said, with a smile, "how come you never gave them warrior names?" Midnightblaze paused, his ears flattening a little as he shifted his paws, and then shrugged, awkwardly.
"I... well. I didn't have many good memories of my time in the clan. My mother was more traditional, wanted me to be tied to our heritage but... I was young. Most of what I could remember was war, and sickness, and everyone dying. Swallowpaw... my sister. My friends. My whole life was with the barn cats, and they didn't have warrior names. My daughters had no connection to the place I remembered, and so they didn't need warrior names. At least, I didn't think so." He looked around, his gaze suddenly troubled. "I didn't think I'd ever end up back here."
"I'm glad you did. I'm sorry that it came at the cost of your happiness, but... I'm happy that you're here. Is that selfish of me?" Midnightblaze turned, suddenly aware of how close his face was to Summitsky's. Their noses were barely an inch apart, the other tom's hot breath ruffling his fur as he studied his face curiously. His warm eyes, the small twist of his maw into a shy smile, the self-conscious way he hunched his shoulders. Midnightblaze smiled, with a sigh.
"It's not. All things considered... I'm glad I'm back too. I wish it had been under different circumstances, I do, but... there are things about being here that are good. Better than good. Perfect." Summitsky's smiled broadened as he tilted his head to study Midnightblaze, silent. As the silence stretched on between them, warm, and comfortable, Summitsky didn't look away, his gaze almost unbearably fond. Finally, the black and white tom laughed, shaking his head. "What?"
"You have... beautiful eyes," Summitsky said, as if suddenly struck by this revelation. Midnightblaze ducked his head bashfully, and his friend coughed, turning his face to look out over the campground again. Neither of them spoke, but Midnightblaze shifted just a little closer, and he didn't miss the way Summitsky's tail swept around him, as together they watched the hustle and bustle of NorthernClan.

    -

"I don't... really need an apprentice," Poppywish said awkwardly, not looking at the apprentice who shrank back in front of him. His sister- taller, and stockier- leaned against him, encouraging look on her face, "frankly, I don't have time to train one and the medicine den isn't anywhere near leaving me in the state of mind to do an apprentice justice. Sorry, kid."
"I don't know how to do anything else," the apprentice said, and his sister nudged him, giving Sleetstar an imploring look from where she and Midnightblaze sat in the mouth of the den. She gave her deputy a questioning look, and he simply shrugged, which seemed to send the she-cat into a frenzy.
"We'll work hard," she said, "Silver Snow only trained as a healer's softpaw, but he could learn! He might have to work a bit harder to catch up, but he's very determined and I know he could do it, he's just a bit scared is all, we've been on our own for so long and it's dangerous and-"
"Deep breaths," Midnightblaze cut in, with a smile, "we're not going to throw you out." The she-cat looked troubled, glancing toward Sleetstar for confirmation. The pointed molly chuckled a little, giving Falling Feather a a kind smile. The she-cat relaxed a little, taking a deep breath as the leader spoke.
"Midnightblaze is right, you two are more than welcome to stay here. You will have to work hard to catch up, the both of you, but hard work makes the reward worthwhile, right?" She stood, nodding to the deputy. "Midnightblaze will take you down to meet the other apprentices. I'll hold proper ceremonies for you two later to assign you mentors, but it might help to get used to the names Featherpaw and Snowpaw now."
"We won't let you down. Come on, Snowpaw!" The newly-named Featherpaw nudged her brother, who got to his paws, casting one more anxious look back at Poppywish before he trailed after his sister and the deputy. Sleetstar turned in the opposite direction, climbing higher to where Thunderjaw was waiting, patiently, to speak with her. The other apprentices were in the campground, a cluster of three sat together, watching a group of four bat a moss ball about between them. Midnightblaze's presence seemed to get their attention, as a black maine-coon looking apprentice scooped the ball onto her paw, casting a curious look at the deputy.
    "Who've you got there, Midnightblaze?"
"This is Featherpaw and Snowpaw, the newest apprentices to join the clan," he announced, with a smile, "I hope you'll all make them feel welcome. This is Tempestpaw, and her siblings Blizzardpaw, Brewingpaw and Lightningpaw. That's Wolfpaw and Butterflypaw, and this is Duckpaw. She's new to the clan too, just like you are." Duckpaw gave them a shy smile, and Featherpaw regarded her curiously, sure she was about the first short-haired cat she'd seen in the clan.
"It's nice to meet you," Brewingpaw said, looking much like his sister, but with smokier fur. His voice was deep and rumbling, much like the storm after which he had clearly been named. Their tabby siblings glanced curiously at the new apprentices as Midnightblaze dipped his head, and crossed the camp to catch up with Howlingeye, who paused to let him fall into sleep.
"So!" Featherpaw said cheerfully, "This is everyone?"
"Mostly," Wolfpaw's voice was quiet and calm, as he swept his tail over his paws, "Emberpaw and Flamepaw too, but they're on assessments right now, so they likely won't be apprentices for much longer."
"They're nice though," Duckpaw said, "they've been kind to me since I came here, so you should definitely take the time to get to know them when they come back. They're pretty good friends with all of us."
"Where are you from, originally? Midnightblaze said you were new."
"A clan called JaggedClan," Duckpaw shrugged with a little laugh, "not much of a change of scenery. At least I'm with my parents though- Addersong and Graypeak." She turned to point out two cats on opposite sides of camp, both alone.
"Is everyone else clan-born? As in, from this clan, I mean." Featherpaw asked, watching as her brother scuffed his paw over the ground, looking awkward among such a large group.
"Yep!" Lightningpaw was cheerful, "our mom is Twilightflower, and our dad's not in the picture. Sunnynose and Winderstrike are Emberpaw and Flamepaw's parents, Sleetstar and Summitsky are Wolfpaw and Butterflypaw's. We've been denmates since birth, I guess, and yet they're both still so quiet."
"There's nothing wrong with being quiet," Butterflypaw said with a tinkling laugh, and Snowpaw's head shot up, his eyes wide. His gaze met the pretty molly's, and she ducked her head bashfully. "I just don't have a lot to say, not all of the time, but I don't mind people who do. Wolfpaw's just cranky, though." The apprentices laughed as Wolfpaw shook his head, amused. Featherpaw relaxed, blowing out a sigh amidst her laughter. Her anxieties had eased; the apprentices of NorthernClan were kind, and welcoming, and suddenly adjusting to life here seemed a lot less daunting.

    -

The cats gathered underneath Highrock as the sun began to set, casting the basin in glorious colours. In front of Sleetstar, Flamepaw and Emberpaw sat, both clearly excited, with Winderstrike and Sunnynose either side of their kits, looking every inch the proud parents of soon to be warriors. Sleetstar cleared her throat, looking around at her gathered clan, before she began the warrior ceremony:
"Today, NorthernClan gains two new warriors; cats who have proved they have what it takes to survive these lands. Emberpaw and Flamepaw step forward as I, Sleetstar, call upon the warrior ancestors of NorthernClan to see you: for you have trained hard to understand the code. Do you promise to uphold this code and to defend your clan, even at the cost of your life?"
"I do!" Flamepaw's voice rang out strong and clear.
"As do I," Emberpaw echoed, firm but lilted with excitement. Sleetstar purred, happily.
    "Emberpaw, please recite the vow."
"To my clan, to my home, to the blood that binds; I pledge myself to the cliffs and the snow. The North is all." She turned to Flamepaw and asked the same, the vow echoed back to her with barely contained glee. It warmed her heart, the enthusiasm of her cats, these first kits of NorthernClan who had grown here and were now about to become warriors. Soon, that would be here kits, and as she caught Summitsky's twinkling eye in the crowd, she saw that he knew it too.
"Then from this day forward, you will be known as Emberpetal, for your gentle and sweet nature and Flamestream, for your speedy and agility. StarClan honours Emberpetal's optimism and Flamestream's boundless kindness. It is my honour to welcome you to the clan as full warriors. Honour them!" Yowls went up around the clan as Sunnynose and Winderstrike converged on their kits, purring happily as they nuzzled close, tails winding high over them. The warmth of the sun shone onto the pelts of the NorthernClan cats, as they crowded close around their newest warriors to bid them congratulations.

    𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐨𝐧.
Working with Sleetstar wasn't exactly how Whisperwind would have pictured his first apprentice, but the she-cat had been accommodating. She kept them in camp or close to it so that Bearears could sit in, and she would watch both Featherpaw and Snowpaw if Whisperwind wanted to work with his friend to help her out. Now, she was demonstrating a swiping move to Featherpaw who mirrored her attentively. Next to her, Snowpaw tried, clumsily, to recreate the same movement.
Whisperwind could see his tail lashing in frustration, and he felt pity. It was obvious that while Featherpaw was rusty on skills from her old clan, Snowpaw lacked the foundation that she had. He was slower and more bumbling, and Whisperwind could see easily how frustrated he got when he didn't pick something up as easily as she did. His brow creased a little as he watched his apprentice, white fur blowing in the wind to mix with Bearears as she sat next to him, head cocked slightly and ear swiveled to pick up the sound.
    "He doesn't sound too happy."
"He's struggling," Whisperwind admitted, "I don't think he's picking it up as fast as he'd like." Bearears didn't say anything to that, the pair of them smiling amicably as Sleetstar settled next to them to watch the apprentices spar with each other. It was obvious that Snowpaw didn't stand a chance from the get go. It wasn't three seconds before the poor tom was flipped off his paws and pinned to the ground by his sister who cast a curious glance at Sleetstar.
    "Like that?"
"Perfect," she nodded, glancing at Whisperwind. The white tom stood, smiling encouragingly at his apprentice, who refused to meet his gaze.
"Good work, Featherpaw," he said, "Snowpaw, why don't we have a talk?" Glumly, the apprentice got to his feet to follow after his mentor, keeping his gaze transfixed on the ground beneath his paws as they moved away from the two mollies. Whisperwind settled them under the clan's tree, on the soft grass. He let the silence hang between them for a moment. When it became clear Snowpaw had nothing to lead with, he cocked his head, fixing him the gentlest smile he possibly could.
"You can talk to me, you know," he said, "I understand this is hard with you, and I'm not upset that you're not picking this up. I'm just... worried that you're pushing yourself to learn in a way that doesn't work for you, and I don't want you to feel miserable because of that." Snowpaw sighed, hunching his shoulders as he crouched in close to his paws, blue eyes watching the ground idly.
"I just... I was always going to be a medicine cat, I guess. That was everyone's plan for me. And now I'm here, doing something I've never been good at, training for a job I'm afraid of." He paused. "I'm afraid I'm not going to be good enough. That I'll try and try, but no matter what, it just won't... be enough." Whisperwind sighed, sympathetic.
"I understand, Snowpaw, I really do. But... you can't let fear hold you back. You have to fight to overcome your fear, to push yourself past that mentality where you're hindered by what-if's. You can say what-if as much as you like, but one never seems to think about the what-ifs that you miss by being so fixated on every little thing that can go wrong. You're not alone in this, and nobody is asking you to work it out without help. I'm here to guide you every step of the way, and you're lucky to have a sister like Featherpaw who'll be right beside you, and a big intake of apprentices that you can practice with. You're going to be great, okay?" Snowpaw took a deep breath, and looked Whisperwind in the eye.
"Okay," he said, offering him a tiny smile. Whisperwind smiled back.
"Good. Now, let's take some time away from Featherpaw, and you can tell me what you're still having trouble with. We can take it from the ground up, and we'll only stop when you're absolutely sure you've got a handle on it." As he and Snowpaw moved toward a clear patch of grass, away from Sleetstar and her apprentice, he didn't mind the shy, pleased smile on his apprentice's face.

    -

The sun set below the horizon on the Greenleaf night in NorthernClan. The basin's walls were bathed in vibrant orange and cotton candy pink, the queens bringing their kits from the nursery to sit on the ledge in front of the den and watch the sunset. The sky above was even more brilliantly coloured as the last rays of the dying sun made a valiant effort to cast warmth down upon the clan. In the middle of camp, life went on.
Bearears and Whisperwind were sparring with Magpiefeather watching, Koishimmer and Viridianfire took their customary stroll around the campground while she was still on rest, laughing together. Brackenstrike and Splitface were coiled close together, sharing tongues, while Hawkeyes and Fallowstep mirrored them on the other side of camp, laughing with Winderstrike and Sunnynose about something or other. Sleetstar stood atop the ledge outside of her den, looking onto the cats of her clan, with a fondness in her expression.
"Something's coming." A voice said from behind her. She whipped around, looking for the spectral cat she'd come to associate the voice with, ice chilling in her bones. Ever since her talk with Summitsky, the verbal commitment to rebellion, to rejecting Northstar's guidance, she hadn't seen hide nor hair of the former leader. She looked back and forth, frantic, and down to the camp, where she realized a bitter, metallic smell was reaching her nose.
"NorthernClan!" Her voice rang out, catching the attention of her clan as the first set of paws came through the entrance to camp, cat after cat flooding into the camp in a slow wave, fanning out to block the exit. Sleetstar's stomach dropped. Rogues in the camp, again. She scanned the pelts for familiar faces, but neither Varvara's warm, chocolate pelt nor Boscoe's scarred ginger one stood out to her. These cats were strangers, and there was not a doubt in her mind they were here to harm the clan.
Thunderjaw met her strides as she passed the nursery ledge, racing down the path to the aide of her clan, frozen in shock. He cast her a questioning look, and she shook her head. He understood. It wasn't them. They weren't here for her, the biggest of the cats was already making quick ground toward Splitface and Brackenstrike as the clan slowly moved, screening off the apprentices as Koishimmer ushered them back toward the path. Brackenstrike put herself between her mate and the big tom. He paused, and flicked his tail. Instantly three cats surged forward, slamming into Brackenstrike, knocking her off her paws and pinning her to the ground.
"No!" Sleetstar yowled, sprinting forward to get to her friend faster. The big tom slammed his paw down onto Splitface's chest, knocking her to the ground and digging his claws in. She shrieked in pain, writhing underneath him as she scrabbled at his foreleg. He seemed not to feel it, simply shaking his head.
"Ah-ah-ah," he tutted condescendingly, "not a step closer pretty lady, our business is not with you." His gaze fell onto Splitface, leaning closer to her. Despite the red welling on her coat, the molly's golden eyes blazed furiously as she turned her head away from his rancid breath, chest heaving under the weight of his paw.
"Get off of her," Brackenstrike spat, ignoring a set of sharp claws held near her throat, "leave her alone. If you hurt her I'll kill you. You hear me?" The tom simply laughed, brazen. Sleetstar's eyes scanned the area for Howlingeye's coat, and found him standing high up the ledge, where he was being watched by one of the clan members. It hit Sleetstar suddenly in a way that made her feel ill. The shapes in the forest with Varvara. Every prickling feeling down her spine, the inexplicable abandoned prey carcasses, weird scents on border patrols, everything she had assumed to be the Merchants. It had been these cats. Watching. Waiting. And Sleetstar knew exactly what it was they wanted.
"Relax, big girl," he said, ignoring the way Brackenstrike spat out a feverish hiss, "nothing's going to happen to anyone so long as we get the rune." Silence hung over the air as cats glanced between each other uneasily. Sleetstar could feel Minkfur's eyes on her- not angry, not judging, just knowing. Sleetstar flicked her ear, and Minkfur started forward, down the rise, toward the medicine den. The cat watching her kept its eyes trained on the den's mouth, waiting for her to return. Sleetstar knew she wouldn't. "The rune." The cat said again, more forcefully this time. "Where is it."
"Gone," hissed Splitface, "you and your posse will never find it, not where the Brothers will hide it, for our order to be reborne. You are too late. Its power is beyond you now, and you were never worthy of it in the first place." The tom's face contorted in fury as the words overtook him. Sleetstar's ears pounded with her heartbeat. The tom's paw drew back, shaking with his violent anger as he glared down at Splitface, baleful.
"Then I should finish the job," he hissed, "sisters should die together, after all."
"No!" Screamed Brackenstrike, trying to launch free of her captors who only dug their claws in harder. The tom's paw started to come down, and Sleetstar stopped thinking. With a powerful cry, she darted forward, and slammed her whole body into the other tom's. She heard the grunt of surprise as she hit him, claws tearing into his flesh as she held on for purchase. His weight crushed her into the ground the first time they landed, but as they bounced, she flipped him over and brought him down hard against the rock, his head jarring against the ground as she dug her teeth into his ear. They rolled; she yanked her head back, and he let out a pained yowl, enough to make even her shiver. She spat, and kicked him away with her hind legs, rolling shakily to her paws. His ear dripped with blood where she had torn it, and his eyes blazed with malice.
    "Kill them all."
It was a simple enough declaration of war Sleetstar supposed, and she didn't even have to give the cry before Brackenstrike gave her body a powerful wrench, flipping a cat away from her, twisting another's paw under her and crushing it against the rock, her claws scraping harshly against the third's throat. Chaos erupted in the camp. Koishimmer and Viridianfire, unable to get back up the cliffside in time hurried Sunnynose passed them one way, Howlingeye and Midnightblaze the other, before they stood staunch to defend the bottom of the trail.
Thunderjaw was first to clash with the other clan. His powerful body twisted sideways, slamming into two cats at once, grunting as a third and fourth leaped onto him and held him down. He writhed and bucked under their claws, throwing them this way and that, the last cleared from on top of him by a precise slice from Howlingeye, who bounded effortlessly over him and into the fray.
Splitface was on her paws, stumbling toward Sleetstar as she caught her breath. She pressed at her shoulder, giving her a serious look as they faced off against the manic leader of the rogues, his breathing high-pitched and heavy with frenzy as his eyes darted back and forth between them, his jaws parting in a snarl as he sneered at them.
"Sisterhood is so beautiful, don't you think? It's such a shame that I'll have to rip you to pieces. Pretty, pretty mollies in itty bitty little pieces, pretty little carrion gifts for the vultures and the crows." He cackled then, leaping forward, as Sleetstar and Splitface twisted out of the way. Sleetstar was quickest on the turn, raking her claws down his flank and eliciting a yowl as he rounded on them again.
"He's mine!" Splitface spat, her eyes set and hard.
"I'm with you, I've got your back," Sleetstar assured her.
"Touching. Now fight!" The tom lunged at them again, and they ducked out of the way, sure to steer clear of his paws and his lunges. Both she-cats were smaller than him, and what they lacked in size, they made up for in speed. If they were to win, they had to utilize this advantage. Sleetstar's stomach rolled, not being able to focus on anything else. She couldn't see Summitsky, except in brief flashes where she would turn, and catch Midnightblaze's pelt, the toms working together in tandem. Brackenstrike's cries were lost to her, and even Thunderjaw's bulk blended into the background.
Howlingeye darted from cat to cat. He nicked the back of their legs, causing their paws to buckle underneath them. He smashed his front paws against their temples hard enough to make them stagger and crash to the ground. It was easy, like a reflex, and this time Howlingeye couldn't feel bad about using it. Not when Poppywish's pelt flashed brilliant amber in the fading red of the sunset, not when Midnightblaze yowled a furious cry and tackled a cat away from his daughter, not when Summitsky's powerful paws shook with fatigue as he defended Bearears, whose pelt bristled, ears swiveling rapidly to pick up the commotion. They were depending on him. His friends. His clan.
A cat leaped at him and he ducked, rolling underneath them and aiming a kick at their sides, knocking the wind out of them as they bounced across the ground. Nimbly, he spun, smashing his paw under the jaw of another attacker, before he pushed off and tackled a final opponent out of thin air, rolling a few times before he firmly pinned them to the ground and cuffed them once round the ears. The cat went limp. Howlingeye moved on.
Thunderjaw and Minkfur were not in need of his help, the pair of them fighting in easy tandem. Though Minkfur had been out of commission in the nursery, she seemed no less able to keep up with Thunderjaw than the rest of the clan. It was like falling back into a rhythm for them, something natural that they'd never lost the feeling of. Each flick of an ear, each ripple of a muscle- a secret code, just for them, that had them cutting through rogues and backing them toward the exit. Summitsky was at Minkfur's shoulder, Brackenstrike on Thunderjaw's, Viridianfire and Koishimmer next to her, Midnightblaze and Howlingeye firm near Summitsky.
More and more warriors of the clan joined them, spreading out into a wide arc to fence the rogues off from their leader who battled with Sleetstar and Splitface, easily holding his own against the two inexperienced mollies. Hollyfeather and Frostclaw held off the stragglers, Bearears, Whisperwind, Ausmasthorn and Bramblingrose defending the path to the dens in the absence of Viridianfire and Koishimmer.
Sleetstar landed a good hit, causing the rogue leader to stumble, as Splitface leaped and scored her claws down his face. He yowled in pain, fury in his eyes as he staggered back, the pair of mollies boxing him in toward the basin wall. His eyes darted this way and that, blood dripping into them, searching for a way out. There was none. A cat among the rogue bulk bristle, and bolted forward, straight for Howlingeye. He was one of the smaller cats in the line; petite. Sleek. His claws were unsheathed as he braced himself, moving to slam forward into the cat.
But something was wrong. Minkfur's desperate warning came a fraction of a second too late, and the cat twisted, slamming into Holwingeye. He came down hard, his paw trapped under him at an awkward angle. Howlingeye yowled in pain, the sound cut off with a strangled breath of shock as claws raked down his stomach, before the rogue moved away, sprinting toward his leader with a war cry.
"Double back!" Midnightblaze yelled. "Brackenstrike, Minkfur! Help Sleetstar!" The large mollies nodded, charging away as the rest of the group fractured, arcing around to get in front of the rogues who had plunged through the gap left by Howlingeye. A rogue stalked toward him, languidly, as he tried to get to his paws, unsuccessfully.
"Nice, for a former assassin," she said conversationally, "but you get sloppy when you leave the order. I've always wanted to see what it would be like to kill a cat Born of Shadows... I suppose now I'll know." Ginger flashed across Howlingeye's vision, and paws planted themselves firmly in front of him, Poppywish's fur bristling as he spat with a fire so characteristic of the ginger tom.
"Over my dead body." The rogue she-cat's gaze darkened, her muscles bunching as she prepared to spring.
    "That can be arranged."
"Poppywish, run-" but she was leaping already, and Howlingeye tried to struggle to his paws again with a forlorn cry as he collapsed, eyes wide with horror as she descended on the tom with her teeth bared. Poppywish dropped onto his back, and his back legs found her stomach, pushing her up and away from them with a powerful wrench. She hit the ground on the other side of Howlingeye as Poppywish flipped back to his paws, and a second later Breakerhowl set after her, chasing her away from the two toms.
Howlingeye couldn't look at Poppywish, couldn't say anything to him as the tom dug his teeth into his scruff and dragged him out of the way of the fighting. The rogues were being pressed back. Minkfur and Brackenstrike were defending Sleetstar and Splitface, their efforts wearing down the rogue leader, whose panic made him sloppy. The tide was turning. Everything would be okay. Which meant Poppywish was going to say something to break his heart, just like he'd shattered his.
"You idiot," he said softly, his voice rough with emotion, "you fool. I can't believe you let yourself get hurt." Howlingeye laughed, suddenly exhausted.
"It's nothing, just a gash to the bone." Poppywish made a strange noise, and it was then Howlingeye realized he was crying. He stretched his good paw out, touched it to his shoulder, and was shocked when he pressed his face into the scruff of his neck. The ginger jerked back abruptly, sniffling to himself as he pressed cobwebs to Howlingeye's wounds. He didn't say anything after that, and Howlingeye couldn't bring himself to break the silence either.
His attention was drawn away to a strangled cry, as he and Poppywish turned to see Splitface leaping away from the body of the rogue's leader. Fighting came to a standstill, the rogues glancing between each other, looking for guidance. Splitface was breathing heavily, collapsing against her mate's sturdy flank. Sleetstar's white fur was red with blood. She looked around at the rouges, gaze steely.
"Get out of my clan," she said, "the rune is not here, and neither is the power you seek. If you don't get of my territory right this instant, I won't think twice about killing you all." That seemed to be all the encouragement the rogues needed. The second nodded firmly to Sleetstar, and flicked his tail. The rogues sprinted for the exit, two large cats cautiously passing Sleetstar to take the body of their fallen member. The clan cats watched them go, in silence. When the last tail had disappeared from view, Sleetstar collapsed to the ground.
"Sleetstar!" Summitsky yelled, voice strangled with panic. He sprinted to her, dropping to the ground next to her to nudge her back up on shaky paws. Her body was limp with exhaustion, but most of the blood in her fur wasn't her own.
"Thank StarClan no one called my bluff," scattered nervous laughs echoed around the basin. Sleetstar's weary eyes scanned her clan, gauging their status. Her eyes landed on Thunderjaw, tenderly checking a gash on Minkfur's side, and supporting her as she limped along on an injured paw, and they flicked onwards. "Frostclaw, Hollyfeather, Breakerhowl. Follow them, make sure they're off the territory, but stay out of sight. I don't want them to get second wind. Be safe." The cats nodded to her as they ran past, on the tail of their attackers.
Silence descended over NorthernClan, the cats shocked by the attack. Midnightblaze was the first to speak, slow, and cautious, clearly afraid of breaking whatever fragile alliance lay between them at the moment. The apprentices descended the path, seeking out their parents and pressing close to them to make sure they were alright. Sunnynose ushered Willowkit and Sprucekit toward their parents, where they weaved in relief around Minkfur's paws.
"Sleetstar?" Midnightblaze said, quietly, "what was that all about?" Sleetstar could feel all eyes swinging onto her, but the gaze she knew as Brackenstrike's burned brightest of all. Splitface's eyes were closed, exhausted from their fight. Minkfur's face was grave, concerned. After a long, extended pause, she let out a sharp bark of laughter.
"It's a long story," she said, smiling tiredly at Summitsky, "someone get me a poppy seed, because I ache like a dog's mother, and then get the clan together so Poppywish has us all in one place. I get the feeling this is something everyone's going to want to hear."

Aether

    “That’s it, you’ve got it.”

Aether watches the apprentice with a worried gaze, eyes following her every movement as she jumps nimbly from branch to branch, slowly weaving her way between tight spaces and keeping watch of her own movements. Eris maintains a fluid-like manoeuvre through the trees and made sure to land light on her paws, careful to not make a single sound as she progressed through her training.

Aether couldn’t afford for the apprentice to slip - just one wrong move and she would be sure to plummet metres below. He watches nervously, anxiety palpating through his nerves as Eris sought footing in the nook of a branch; despite her determination, the Count took notice that she had been struggling with reaching the much taller branches, she was just not quite suited out for swiftness and agility - her movements were careful and precise, but gentle and lacked greatly in confidence; Eris was constantly checking and rechecking her footholds, which would prove a problem in the case of an intruder.

population. three males. one nonbinary. zero females. two servings needed. two next request. august 10th
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

Perched on a thick, wide white piece of driftwood nestled on the shore in the powder white sand, an eagle turned it’s white head, a soft rustle breaking the rhythmic lull of waves washing against the shore before receding as it drew its yellow beak through its feathers. Yellow talons gripped the soft wood and it held its wings close to its sides, before piercing eyes turned to look at the blue stretch of ocean, adjusting it’s position as needed.

Close behind, muscles ripple under long, thick ginger fur as the lithe, but muscular body crept closer, and closer, paw steps silent and muted by the sand. Soft, pale yellow-green eyes were fixated on the white of the back of the eagle’s head, ears twitching every now and then. Once the feline had reached its destination it paused, muscles bunching, taught, preparing to spring.

A shrieking caw was ripped from the magnificent eagle, wings spreading as paws hit its back, claws tearing through sensitive feathers. It pushed off of the driftwood, wings flapping, beating as it rose into the air. Sharp talons flashed as feline and eagle grappled mid-air.

A snarl burst forth from the feline’s maw, and with one well-placed blow the eagle spiraled down before crashing, sand spraying upward and flinging the ginger cat to one side. The feline scrambles to his paws, shaking the sand from his fur, before padding around to eagle’s head. It’s golden eyes flickered, and after a moment, the cat lays down, head resting on his paws as his eyes met the dying prey’s.

”You have not died in vain.” He murmurs, his eyes never leaving the eagle’s. ”Your life will nourish and sustain me.” There is a flicker of recognition in the bird’s eyes before it takes it’s last breath. After a moment, the feline stands, stretching out his legs.

There is nothing left of the once-mighty tribe. The fact hits the female feline as she picks her way over the charred remains of the ground. The sunlight streaming through the trees dapples her black and orange-patched white fur, but the beauty the forest surrounding the camp once held is gone, replaced by black ash and char.

Her eyes sting as she reaches the edge of the camp she had known so well, had known every crevice and nook and cranny. She had been born here, raised here, taught the traditions and values and beliefs of the tribe. And now, nothing was left of the once-mighty Tribe of Moving Mountains. Was there no one left? Their king, their thane? The Jarls, the Danes, the Hunters, the Apprentices, the Mothers, the Bairns? She might as well assume they all have died in the forest fire that destroyed their home and their tribe.

A shriek draws her out of her grieving thoughts, and she turns in the direction of the sound. It was, after all, a noise like the great birds they hunted for food. Could someone from the tribe have survived? She had run when the fire started, but perhaps, someone else had made it out alive. The thought makes her perk up considerably, and turning away from the destroyed camp, she slowly accelerates into a gallop, weaving through the familiar trees now streaked with char, skidding to a halt when her paws meet soft sand.

A few feet away, a familiar long-haired ginger cat is occupied with the Lochinvyrr, the sacred honor of the Tribe of Moving Mountains between hunter and prey with a dying eagle. She stays quiet at the treeline, not wanting to disturb him, and after a few moments, it is over. The ginger feline stands, stretching his legs, and she calls out to him. “Novawing!”

The male turns as she approaches, recognition and surprise flickering over his features. ”Autumnleaf? It’s that you?”

“Yes.” A purr tumbles out of her narrow chest, stopping before him, tail-tip flicking. “I thought...”

”You were the only one left?” She nods, and grief, too, is deep in her eyes. ”So did I.” A soft sigh follows his words, and he looks away.

“Did you see any of the others?” She dares to hope, but it’s stifled when Novawing shakes his head. There’s a pause between them before she speaks again. “As Thane, you should...”

”Take Grassteller’s place as King?” She nods, again, and he scuffs his paws against the ground. ”I know. And I will, in two moons as is tradition if I am unchallenged....but until then, I want to focus on gathering whoever has survived.” He clears his throat, before his gaze returns to her again. ”I would love if you would take up your rank again as Druid for the tribe.”

“Of course.” She responds softly. “I would love nothing more.”

𝕠𝕟𝕖 𝕞𝕠𝕠𝕟 𝕒𝕘𝕠,
QuickClan's camp was a hustle of grim activity. Cats were quiet, going to and fro. All of the leaders has lost a life, which left Pantherstar who seemed the least injured and a few of the un-injured deputies to organize the camp enough to accommodate the patrols that were staying the night. The medicine den had been shifted to a sheltered area outdoors so that the various medicine cats would have room to work. Those who were uninjured found their way into the warrior's den to sleep, or to help the queens with their kits. Some stayed close to family in the sick-camps, like Boulderflame.
Dusklight crouched under an overhang, staring across the camp at the medicine den. He'd been watching Gorseberry come and go with herbs, too preoccupied to pay him notice, hunched away as he was. Novella and Archibald were curled up at his flank, asleep, and Wolverinejaw ducked out of the medicine camp and padded toward him to settle down next to them. She cast a worried look back toward a dark shape Dusklight could guess was Sedgefire, but she said nothing.
He was glad for it. He had more to think about, like the rising panic in his chest. He could see Lionheart asleep against a worried looking Ashenstrike, who was grooming her fur methodically. Sedgefire was injured and Mousestone was busy rushing from cat to cat to make sure everyone was attended to. The medicine cats had started to slow down now, but this was somehow less of a consolation to Dusklight, who had a very big truth to drop and more of an opportunity to do it. Finally, he pushed himself to his paws, and made his way toward the medicine den. As he ducked inside, he felt something solid hit his chest. Autumnpaw dropped her herbs with a grunt, and then sniffed.
"Dusklight," she said with a gasp, "you're hurt!"
"What?" He blinked, and then looked down at his paws, fur still splotched with drying blood, although he registered that Autumnpaw wouldn't be able to see the difference. "Oh, no! No, don't freak anyone out, it's not my blood." They both fell silent, before Dusklight chuckled, nervously. "That doesn't make it sound much better, huh? Hows it going in the trenches, Pip?" Autumnpaw blew out a sigh.
"Lot of injuries. Lot of blood." She paused. "It's getting better now, since Spidernose came down from GroveClan to help out for tonight. Badgerstar had some molly run back and get him from what I hear." Another pause, as Dusklight hummed his acknowledgement. "That means you can talk to Gorseberry, if you want. We can do without him for a few minutes, but you should probably try to stay out of Alpinemask's way."
"Thanks for the advice, Pip." Dusklight said, stepping out of her way so she could continue past. "I won't be too long with him. And hey, tell Mousestone I love her and not to run herself too ragged, okay?" Autumnpaw flicked her ear in acknowledgement, ducking out into the night. Dusklight turned and stepped fully into the den to see Gorseberry watching him with a curious look, beautiful blue eyes twinkling with amusement in a way that made Dusklight's gut clench with anxiety.
"Pip?" He asked.
"Short for Pipsqueak." Gorseberry laughed.
"I can't believe she lets you get away with that."
"Inexplicably, she likes me," Dusklight gave an over-exaggerated shrug, "something about my rugged charm and impeccable sense of humour, I guess." Gorseberry ducked his head, shoulders shaking with silent chuckles, but he looked exhausted. The one-eyed tom stepped closer, nudging his friend's cheek with his nose. "Hey... do you want to take a walk? I'm sure you could use a couple minutes away from the medicine den. We won't be gone long, I promise." Gorseberry paused, as if to think about it, then nodded.
"Lead the way." And so Dusklight did, the pair of them moving shoulder to shoulder so the tired medicine cat could lean on Dusklight's sturdier form, as they crested the rise out of camp and onto the moors, shifting a wee bit away from the entrance to sit under the stars, undisturbed. A chill wind cut through them, and Gorseberry shivered, so Dusklight wrapped his tail around him and leaned closer to him, letting him burrow against his shoulder for warmth.
"I'm so glad you're okay," Gorseberry said, breaking the silence first, "I was so worried that I was going to be tending to you in that sick camp. I... I don't know what I would have done if I'd had to see you injured like that, especially if you were- if you might have-"
"Takes more than some big-headed rogues to kill me," Dusklight assured him gently, "and you, worried? You should have seen me out on the battlefield when I saw that rogue coming for you. I was distressed beyond all reasonable belief."
"I did," Gorseberry said quietly, softly, "I did see you." And that was true. Beyond this day, Gorseberry had always seen him. Had always made him feel seen at the very least. Dusklight took a deep breath, turning to face the other. He was surprised to find Gorseberry watching him, turning his face away in what looked like embarrassment at having been caught staring. Dusklight swallowed, and took a deep breath.
"That's... that's why I wanted to talk, actually," he said, "because of what happened out there." Gorseberry turned back to face him, curiosity and something else in his expression. Dusklight thought it might have been hope. He desperately wanted it to be. It took everything in him not to turn away from Gorseberry then, instead holding his gaze. "When I saw you out there, I did everything to get to you in time, and I've never been so afraid of failing, not once in my entire life. But the idea that I wouldn't make it, that you would be hurt or you could die because I couldn't save you in time... I was beside myself. Distraught. And that's. It's not just because I couldn't help you, that wasn't all it is. It's because I have something I need to say to you, and I almost lost you without ever getting to say it." Dusklight took a deep, shuddery voice, and still his voice cracked with raw emotion as he spoke.
"I love you. There's not a doubt in my mind that I do. This isn't an 'I think' or an 'I might', this is me telling you that I've never been more sure about anything in my entire life than I am about how much I love you. I've known for a while now, and I didn't want to say anything because I was afraid you wouldn't feel the same way, and I didn't want to lose you as a friend, but I don't care anymore. I know I can't live any longer without telling you, because if you died tomorrow and I'd never said the words 'I love you' to you, I'd spend the rest of my life regretting it. Gorseberry, you're everything to me, don't you know that? You're unbelievably kind and so, so selfless, and I have so much admiration for how dedicated you are to helping cats. When Autumnpaw first became your apprentice, you spoke about her so proudly, and it was clear how hard you were working to make her feel valued beyond her blindness, and that is one of the many reasons I adore you so much. And, if you'd have me, I want to spend every single day for the rest of my life telling you another reason why I love you, because I have more than a lifetime's worth of them, but if that's not how you feel, then that's okay too, but I just need you to know how I feel, and to know that I don't think I could stop loving you even if I tried."
"Dusklight..." Gorseberry's voice was shaky, and then he let out a sob, launching forward to press his face into the larger tom's chest with a wracking sob, his shoulders shaking. Dusklight startled, opening his mouth to console him, but Gorseberry cut him off. "I always dreamed you'd feel the same but I... I never thought it would come true. I love you too, Dusklight. You're kind, and brave- I mean, you showed up to fight this battle for cats you don't even really know, lost an eye fighting a battle for your clan, and how you handle Autumnpaw... well, no ordinary tom could do that." Dusklight let out a choked laugh, pressing their foreheads together. "I was so worried for you because you are my friend, but I want you to be something more, because I love you too, as sure as the moors are windy and as sure as the sun is warm. There is no doubt in my mind that I love you, that I am in love with you, and that I will be every day, every hour and every minute until StarClan finally takes me, and even then I will love you beyond time itself."
"You're everything," Dusklight whispered, licking Gorseberry's forehead as the other tom let out a rumbling purr, "my moon and my stars, my sun and my sky, my whole universe wrapped up into the sweetest looking tom I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. And I want you to be mine, and I want to be yours. There's no one else for me, Gorseberry. Only you."
"I want that too," Gorseberry smiled at him, eyes twinkling brightly as he pressed their foreheads together again with a shuddery sniffle. "I want to be your mate."
"Then we're mates," Dusklight said, firmly, "and I'm gonna hold true to my promise. A reason I love you, every day for the rest of our lives." Gorseberry smiled up at him, blinking away the last of his happy tears as he marveled at his handsome mate, backlit by the Greenleaf night sky, stars burning overhead.
"What's todays?"
"I love you for your laugh, which reminds me of the sun and the happy song that starlings sing," Dusklight said. Gorseberry laughed again, voice choked with emotion, leaning his face into the scruff of Dusklight's neck, as his mate wrapped his tail around him again and rested his chin on the top of his head. As the events of the night and their emotions washed over them, bathing them both in exhaustion, they found solace in each other, basking in the warmth of their love as a shooting star streaked briskly across the sky above their heads, as if Silverpelt shed tears of joy for the happiness between them.

The day after the battle, things had been returning slowly but surely to normal. Mousestone had stayed behind with the badly injured GroveClan warriors, and Dustfang had opted to stay with his son while he was treated. Sedgefire had limped back, wedged between Dusklight and Novella's sturdy shoulders, but Lionheart lay curled up in her nest with her mate wrapped around her, grooming behind her ears comfortingly.
Falcongaze hadn't been for lack of company either. Dustfang was well enough to move around and his ear wasn't really bothering him, so he had made himself useful in the nursery, helping the queens to keep the kits entertained and doing other odd jobs around camp to stay out of the way of the medicine cats who had more pressing matters to attend to, such as Falcongaze's eye. Luckily, Cardinalheart had descended upon him in a cloud of anxiety-riddled fussing, berating him for coming back injured as he was, although his hysterics had mostly died down since then.
Now, the red tom sat keeping Falcongaze company as he dozed off in the warmth of the den, a light purr escaping his throat as Cardinalheart tenderly brushed a bramble out of his thick fur. He forced his eye to open, although the view of the den was somewhat hazy in his content, half-asleep state. Thanks to the herbs he'd been giving, he mostly just felt drowsy, the pain numbed to the point where he couldn't register it.
"You don't have to be here doing this, you know," he said, "I don't want to keep you from your clan, and I-"
"Shut up," Cardinalheart said, a fond edge to his voice, "you're hurt. The best thing I can do is be here with you, especially since even if you did come back without an eye... you came back, like you said you would."
"I wouldn't break my promise," Falcongaze said, seriously. Cardinalheart smiled, and nodded.
"I know." His ears pricked up then, head swinging toward the den entrance as Falcongaze's tired gaze tried to track after him. He could make out a voice that sounded like his father's, placating a shriller molly, and he struggled to get to his paws, determined to assist his father. He'd barely made it to sitting when his mother swept into the den like her tail was on fire, shoulders sagging in relief as she scurried toward her son.
"Mom, what's the matter? What's wrong?" Shadowtail just laughed, shaking her head a little as she pressed her face into her son's fur and inhaled his scent. After a moment, it seemed to register, and he relaxed, settling his chin on top of Shadowtail's head as she let out a relieved sniffle. "You scared me. I thought something had happened in GroveClan- and don't scoff! You came in here like someone tied a burning bush to your tail."
"Imagine my distress when my eldest son comes back to GroveClan alone and tells me that my mate and my baby boy are back in the QuickClan medicine den. I was so worried for you both, but at least your father seems fine." Falcongaze smiled, brightening as he glanced over her shoulder to see the rest of his family filing in. Dustfang came first, with Burrcall and Boulderflame just behind him, before Falcongaze's littermates shouldered past.
"Falcongaze!" A cheerful voice yowled, hitting him so hard that he fell backward into the nest, before purring and wrapping his paws around his cousin's slender form as she nuzzled into his throat while he laughed.
"Hazelskip!" He seemed shocked to see her. "I see you've managed to escape your camp lockdown."
"Nothing could keep me away from visiting my cousin on his deathbed, dummy," she said, "and yes, I know you're not dying, but the way aunt Shadowtail was going on, one might have been tempted to think you were already dead." Shadowtail rolled her eyes good naturedly, leaning on Dustfang with a sigh as he groomed between her ears. Cinderdawn marched over, pressing her nose to his forehead with a rumbling purr.
"Hey, numbskull, I told you that you had to come back safe, not camp out playing patient in QuickClan's medicine den," she shot Falcongaze a look as his brothers crowded round, touching noses to him and murmuring their relief at seeing him okay. He laughed a little bit, shaking his head as he pushed them back from him gently with his paws, so that Hazelskip could help him back to sitting, Cardinalheart nudging him from the other side.
"Is this him?" Sleetbreeze asked, startling the red tom. Falcongaze's brother looked him up and down, grinning crookedly. "He is handsome!" Cinderdawn shoved him as Cardinalheart spluttered and Falcongaze ducked his head in embarrassment. "Not that Falcongaze said that about you in so many words, I mean that Mom just said your dad was very handsome and he said he supposed you had his genes so I guess he's right you are very handsome so I must say he has excellent tast- mff!" Oakback's fluffy tail landed in Sleetbreeze's mouth.
"Ignore him, he's just very relieved that our big brother isn't... well, dead." He shrugged a little, with an amused look. "It's nice to meet you, Cardinalheart, we've heard a lot about you. I'm Oakback, this is Sleetbreeze, Cinderdawn and Hazelskip, and then that's Burrcall, and Boulderflame you probably already know- and then our parents, Dustfang and Shadowtail."
"It's nice to meet you all, too," Cardinalheart said shyly, "Falcongaze talks about you a lot. You all seem really important to him and it's nice to put faces to names."
"He talks about you a lot too, you know," Cinderdawn purred and Falcongaze tipped his head back in embarrassment, "so I can safely say 'likewise', and that his descriptions didn't do you any justice."
"Hey, hey, come on now, lay off the poor little guy. How're you feeling, kiddo?" Burrcall asked, tilting her head at her younger half brother as Cardinalheart shuffled a little closer. He felt himself flush under his fur, shooting his big sister a grateful smile while his littermates giggled to themselves, ignoring the faux-stern glares from their parents.
"Between the herbs and the poppy seeds they've been loading me on, I can barely feel my paws, let alone my face. When I can feel things, I ache all over, and I'm still coming to terms with the fact that I've lost an eye... but I'm okay. You're all here, and Cardinalheart... he's been here for me too. He's been a good friend." He turned his face to smile at the other tom, only to find him smiling back, shyly, as if meeting him for the first time all over again. He tilted his head, curiously, but Cardinalheart's attention was dragged away by Shadowtail standing at the other end of the den.
He shrank back a little as she moved toward him, before he tensed up in shock as she pressed her nose to his forehead, and then leaned her face against his shoulder with a small, rumbling purr. After a brief moment of hesitation, Cardinalheart touched his nose to her shoulder in a shocked acknowledgement of the affectionate gesture. She backed away from him, her eyes sparkling with tears, but there was relief on her face.
"Thank you," she said, "for looking after my son, for being there for him. I know this can't be an easy time for you, and it means so much to me that you're here, supporting him. He's lucky to have someone so kind and so selfless in his corner, and I hope he makes you feel that every second you're with him." Cardinalheart ducked his head in embarrassment, until Shadowtail's tail-tip lifted his chin again. She gave him a warm smile. "You are always welcome in our family, Cardinalheart, for what you've done for my son. You will always have a place with us, and if you ever need anything at all, please, don't hesitate to ask."
"I haven't done that muc-"
"Please, son," Dustfang said, cutting off his protest, "friends are the most valuable gifts you can have, and Falcongaze is lucky to have someone as good as you, and I'll never forget how you've supported him, even when you're hurting like you are. Thank you, for everything, really, from the bottom of my heart. As far as I'm concerned, you're yet another son of mine, troublesome as they are." Cardinalheart's eyes welled with tears, as he smiled shyly at his paws.
"I don't know what to say."
"You don't have to say anything," Falcongaze said gently, using his paw to draw him closer so that he could rest his chin atop his head, while the rest of his family converged on them, locking them into a group embrace. "If Mom's decided you're a part of the family, you're a part of the family whether you like it or not."

"Any idea what this is about?" Midnightstream asked, brushing up against his sister as Pitchpaw sprinted away from them, heading toward the nursery where they'd been instructed to meet. Juniperstorm shrugged, the pair of them trailing after their younger brother. Maplefall was curled around her newest kits, Badgerstar curled tightly around her. Pitchpaw settled shoulder to shoulder with Pebblepaw, while Mottlepaw and Flamepaw lay close to their newest siblings, peering curiously at the two black cats. Midnightstream and Juniperstorm settled, eyeing their siblings curiously.
"Pebblepaw has something he'd like to say," Pitchpaw announced, and their parents exchanged glances with confusion as Pebblepaw nudged her twin in irritation. Shyly, she shuffled her paws a little, curling her tail over them.
"Well, Pitchpaw gave it away a little... but I asked you all here today because I've been thinking over the last few moons, and he's been really good in supporting me while I figured it out, but I'm sure now. I'm trans. I'm a tom, I mean. I used to feel really disjointed when I got called Pitchpaw's twin, but it made me so happy when cats got us confused, and it took me a while to realize it... but I'm not a molly. I hope you can all accept that."
"Oh, sweetie, of course," Maplefall purred, stretching out to touch her nose to Pebblepaw's shoulder. "I'm sorry you didn't feel like you could tell us earlier, but we love you, no matter what. You're our son-" Pebblepaw brightened, "-and when we brought you into this world we promised to love you unconditionally, and that includes when you tell us that we got it a little bit wrong."
"I'm so happy you told us," Badgerstar purred, getting up to sweep his tail around his son and bundle him close against his chest, "I hope we haven't caused you any harm, but I promise you this doesn't change a thing. Son or daughter or simply child, I love you with all my heart- and that goes for all of you. No matter who you are, my love for you knows no bounds, and personally, I'm relieved. So far my daughters have all gotten Lionheart's hard-headedness."
"Hey!"
"Hey!" Midnightstream laughed as Mottlebloom and Juniperstorm cried out in protest. The eldest shook her head, with a roll of her eyes. "Trust Dad to make a stupid joke, huh? We love you, Pebblepaw, and I'm glad you trusted us enough to tell us all. I love you, little brother. What's next?"
"I want to tell the rest of the clan... I don't know the best way to go about it though. I guess I want to talk to my friends first, like Cherrypaw and Fernpaw, and then to some of the big members of the clan and work my way through, but I don't want it to be a big announcement thing. I'm gonna talk to Harepuddle and Frostbranch too, and Burrcall, although I guess she'll have a pretty different experience from me." He gave a nervous laugh, but smiled as Badgerstar touched his nose to his forehead, and Pitchpaw put his nose against his twin's shoulder.
"Are you going to want to change your name?" Midnightstream asked, tilting his head. Pebblepaw shook his own.
"No, I like being Pebblepaw, I don't have any problem with that, I just wanted you to know before I become a warrior because... well, I guess that's a new stage of life for me, and I want to go into it being who I was meant to be, and I wanted your support so that when I go out there to become a warrior of this clan, I know you're all behind me."
"As if there was ever any question, dummy," Flamepaw purred, touching noses with his brother, "finally, we have a monopoly. We can vote around Mottlepaw."
"Oh, no way, Pebblepaw is still going to agree with me because he's not an idiot," the black tom laughed, purring as he met his sister's eyes. Her expression softened as she tilted her head to the side. "I'm so proud of you. It takes bravery to admit who you are, when it's different from how cats thought you were, but the world is a better place every time a cat reveals their truth, and I'm going to be honoured to be a warrior of GroveClan, fighting alongside all of my brothers, and my sister." Her twinkling eyes landed on Juniperstorm. "Just the one."
"I love you all so much," Pebblepaw said, voice rough with emotion, "thank you, for being here for me."
"There was never any chance we wouldn't be," Midnightstream got to his paws, and the family converged on Pebblepaw, locking him into a tight weave of furry cat embraces, as he pressed his face against his father's shoulder and let the happy tears of relief flow, surrounded by the love of his family.

𝕥𝕠𝕕𝕒𝕪,
"You shouldn't have waited," Lionheart protested, leaning heavily against Ashenstrike. The grey tabby shook his head, giving his daughter an amused look. It was still strange to him to have her staring back, looking so much like him with the same silken silver fur and the same brilliant green eyes. The sharpness there was her mother's, and at her shoulder, Mottlepaw chuckled, titling her head a little.
"It wouldn't be the same without you, Lionheart. Besides, every mother should get to see her kit's warrior ceremony. Even if she'd tried to forge ahead like you'd told her to, I would have stopped her. Someone has to stop you head-strong ladies from charging paws-first into every problem, and Ashenstrike's had no luck so far." Ashenstrike snorted, giving Maplefall's daughter an amused look.
"Watch it, kiddo, you're not quite a warrior just yet," he smiled, tilting his head back to look at the sky, "but I will say... I'm excited to see how Badgerstar performs a warrior ceremony before the sun's even up." As if on cue, the black and white tom wandered into view, Maplefall sticking close to his side as he settled at the base of the tree next to Lionheart. The clan had all been roused early, already gathered to watch the proceedings.
"Good morning everyone," Badgerstar said, cheerfully, "I'm sorry for the early wakeup, but we've got a bit to get through. Last moon, we helped our good friends and allies in QuickClan reclaim their territory and chase out a group of rogues bent on doing harm. I know I've been strict on patrols for a bit, but we shouldn't slope off now. Keep your eyes and ears open today, just in case. With that out of the way, I'd like to conduct warrior ceremonies for two dedicated mollies long overdue. Now that Lionheart is with us again-" the clan cheered, and the orange molly chuckled, "-I'd like to call GroveClan's warrior ancestors to look down upon our daughters, Fernpaw and Mottlepaw, who have trained tirelessly to understand the ways of the warrior code. Their dedication is why they're standing here, ready to become a warrior, and the rest of our kits are still waiting to take their assessments, although I think that trouble-making gene might have been my fault, and my kits are a bad influence on poor Cherrypaw." The clan laughed, and Maplefall shook her head in amusement. "Without further ado... Fernpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code, and to defend your clan, even at the cost of your life?"
"I do," she lifted her gaze to smile firmly at her mother, pleased to see the pride swelling affectionately in her mother's eyes.
"Then from this day forward, you with be known as Fernstone for your firmness and unrelenting spirit. StarClan honours your decisiveness and your bravery, and it is my honour to welcome you as a warrior of GroveClan." More cheers went up for the newest warrior as she bounded forward to exchange customs with Badgerstar, before she bounded back to her parents, nuzzling into them as they swept their tails around her, Lionheart's shoulders shaking with happy sobs as she pressed her face into her daughter's fur.
"And Mottlepaw... do you, too, promise to uphold the warrior code, and to defend this clan, even at the cost of your life?"
"I do." She said, smooth and easy, like everything in the world had simply fallen into place for her. He gave her a fond smile.
"Then you will be known as Mottlebloom, for your gentle heart. StarClan honours your kindness and your steadfast nature, and I could not be prouder to welcome you as a full warrior of GroveClan." Mottlebloom surged forward to complete the customs as her clanmates cheered, nuzzling close to her parents as Maplefall groomed behind her ears.
"Mottlebloooooooooooooooooooom!" Flamepaw slammed into her hard enough to make her stumble, purring as her brothers approached. She nuzzled each of them in turn, tail kinking above her back.
"You boys do good on your assessments today so I'm not totally leaving you in the dust." Pebblepaw purred, cocking his head to the side.
"Aren't you meant to be silent?"
"Only after sunset, dummy," she said, sticking out her tongue. Badgerstar swatted his kits away with a little laugh.
"I'd like us all to say a big good luck to my sons and Lionheart's boy. Pitchpaw, Pebblepaw, Flamepaw and Cherrypaw. If all goes well, StarClan willing, we'll have six warriors sitting vigil tonight. Now go." Amid a chorus of good lucks, the apprentices farewelled their parents and bounded from camp into the daybreak, leaving Badgerstar and Maplefall sitting with Mottlebloom.
"Congratulations, squirt," Juniperstorm purred, rubbing her forehead against her sister's as Thunderspark stood at her shoulder, purring. A heavily pregnant Emberwing wandered up beside the group, leaning heavily on Midnightstream for support.
"Thanks," her sister mewed, grinning, "I think I got the best warrior name in the family, which must mean I'm the favourite."
"You've still got three brothers to go, yet," Fernstone reminded her, amused, "I wouldn't be getting too confident just yet." Mottlebloom smiled, bumping shoulders with her friend as they leaned their heads together with a companionable purr.
"I'm pretty confident, I learned it from you." As the sun began to stretch over the horizon, Longriver standing at Lionheart's side to give out patrol assignments, the newest warriors's tinkling laughter lifted into the air and brightened the sun.

It was nice to be back in GroveClan, with everyone else. Being injured meant fawning, which Sedgefire had anticipated. Her parents hovered, Halfpond fussed, Ripplemist and Frostbranch checked on her far more than they ought to. The only ones who seemed unbothered by the languid way she draped herself outside the medicine den to catch the warmth of the Greenleaf sun were her youngest siblings, too caught up in their new lives as warriors to give her much beyond the occasional prime-kill they were bringing back to the clan.
A shadow cast itself over her, blocking out the sunlight. Sedgefire looked up to see Wolverinejaw smiling down on her. She smiled back. Wolverinejaw, like most of the cats at the battle for the barn had been cleared pretty quickly. Just cuts and scrapes that she was instructed to keep an eye on, lest they get infected, but she'd healed up well after the last moon, while Sedgefire was still relegated to bedrest.
"I was wondering when you were going to come sniffing around," she said, fondly, to show she really meant 'I missed you and I'm glad you're here'. Wolverinejaw scoffed, settling down beside her, before she leaned into Sedgefire's flank, eyes closing contentedly as the other molly groomed behind her ears, without missing a beat.
"We need to talk," she said, and Sedgefire hummed without skipping a beat. To talk about it. The thing that had happened. They'd decided to stop dancing around it, but at exactly the right time. In the aftermath, seeing all that the other clans had lost, seeing Boulderflame and his father barely managing to keep Falcongaze upright as they'd made their way back to QuickClan's camp, she had realized that she didn't have family- not like that- but the cat limping along at her side, head still held proudly high as Novella shot her cross looks that said 'stop being so stubborn and admit you're in pain' was Sedgefire. Her Sedgefire.
Only she wasn't hers. Not yet, anyway.
"Then let's talk," she said, softly, "you've obviously got something you want to say." Wolverinejaw glared at her, flicking her ear in irritation. Sedgefire looked amused, and easygoing. Wolverinejaw wasn't sure how, when she knew neither of them particularly liked to lay their feelings on the line like this. She glanced around to make sure no one else was looking. The other cats around camp recovering from injuries were preoccupied. She took a deep breath.
"I lied, on the battlefield," she started, "I don't think. I know. That I love you, I mean. I know I do. I feel it in my bones every single day, every time I look at you. There's not a doubt in my mind that in any universe, in any world where we cross paths, I would love you no matter what. Maybe it's stupid or sentimental, but I think our souls were made for each other, and I think that no matter what we were meant to have them combine. And so... I don't regret saying it. That I loved you. That I love you, right now in this moment, more than I ever have before, and in the next moment I'll love you even more."
"You are a silly old thing," Sedgefire said, fondly, pressing their foreheads together, "I love you too, Wolverinejaw. I don't know how you didn't see it, with how I look at you, because I'm sure I must be the most obvious molly about it when I stare at you like you hung the sun in the sky, like you're the one that turns the world, paints the sky at sunset and sunrise and brings the rains that wash away all our troubles. You're everything to me. You have been for a while. I adore you, and I really do think you're the love of my life."
"You don't make it easy to pick up on," Wolverinejaw huffed, although her face softened as Sedgefire let out a delighted laugh. She pressed closer, touching their noses together. "So this means we're... what?"
"Bad at this, apparently," she snorted as Wolverinejaw swatted her with her tail, "and it also means we're mates. At least, I want to be. I know there's not anyone else I want to be with, and I think I'd lose my mind if I saw you with anyone else." Wolverinejaw laughed, relaxing back into her, purring as Sedgefire's fluffy tail swept around her, bundling her close against her new mate.
"There's nothing more in this world I want," she said, tucking her nose against her shoulder, "you're my everything."
"And you're mine," Sedgefire smiled, "now nap, or Goldleaf is gonna chew your ears of for disrupting my healing." Wolverinejaw laughed at that, but with her anxiety dissipating into the warm sun, it was easy to doze off, listening to the steady thrum of Sedgefire's heart, and the rumbling purr that reverberated with each slow, drawn breath.

"Nice of Burningcloud to take over the patrol for you," Harrierstreak said, pausing as his mate made an athletic leap over some debris, shaking out his paws as he bounded closer to catch up. The tabby tom pressed his nose into his mate's grey fur, letting him brush ahead with a light chuckle. Longriver turned, pausing to look back at him curiously, backlit in a warm glow by the summer sun. Harrierstreak smiled, fondly.
"Nice indeed," Longriver said with a purr for his mate, "and you look strange."
"Very kind of you to say," Longriver laughed, shaking his head as Harrierstreak bounded to catch up to him, jostling their shoulders together companionably.
"I didn't mean it like that," the grey tom said with a smile, "you were just... you were staring."
"Could you blame me when you're the most handsome tom in the world?" Longriver shoved his mate with a shy smile, glancing at his paws as Harrierstreak laughed. "Hey, I mean it, I'm not just playing around you know. We haven't had much time together lately, with everything that's happened, but... I just want to make sure you know that I love you. I think you're the most handsome, kindest, bravest tom I've ever met in my life, and I adore you, I really do." Longriver purred, nuzzling his head under Harrierstreak's chin, bringing them to a stop in the middle of a clearing.
"You're a sap," he told him, fondly, "but I know. You make me feel it, not just with words, but in every small way, every thing you do. I'm not sure of an awful lot, but the one thing I am sure of is how much you love me, and how much I love you. It still astounds me to this day that a tom as handsome as you are who could have absolutely any cat you wished was interested in such a spindly little thing like me." Harrierstreak laughed, pressing their foreheads together.
"Oh, but look at you my love. Look how much you've grown into it! When I met you, you were all legs and mostly skin and bones, and here you are, strong enough to outrun every cat in the clan with fur that shines like silver in the sun. I don't think there's anyone more handsome than you, and there's not another cat out there for me regardless of how handsome he might be. You're the only cat I love, or could love. You're it for me."
"You're everything I ever wanted," Longriver said, eyes brimming with fondness, "I still can't believe I get to have you, but I feel so lucky for it. You've no clue just how much I hoped for someone just like you to be in my life, and now you're here. My mate, talking about starting a family with me. It almost seems unreal- I mean, all of this does- like the best kind of dream. But one where I know I won't wake up, and I'm okay with that, because I don't want to."
"Are you saying I'm your dream guy?"
"Literally, yes, beyond a shadow of a doubt." Harrierstreak purred, nuzzling into Longriver as he pressed back against him with a content sigh. "You're going to get a big head about it now, aren't you?"
"For sure," Harrierstreak purred, "but it's good to know that I'm your dream guy. I'll do my best to keep being worthy of the title." Longriver touched their noses together, a parting gesture, as he smiled warmly.
"There's not a single thing you could do that would strip you of it," he assured him, before he turned and sprinted toward the lake. "Race you to Sunrocks!" He called back over his shoulder, gleefully.
"Cheater!" Harrierstreak yelled back, sprinting after him, their laughter echoing up into the warmth of Greenleaf's sunny days.

Greenleaf

Early greenleaf is hotter than it normal is and many of newleaf's tender buds have shriveled rather than spread into a fine green canopy. Long-furred cats mourn the lack of shade but the weather is still mild enough that their short furred clanmates have yet to understand their pain. Elders pray that the early heat will not bring drought while medicine cats encourage mentors to watch their apprentices for signs of heatstroke. The weather is nice yet, but the future implications are on most cats' minds.

[“Nothing ever last forever.”]
Rye

word count : text

He was a fighter, the tom with a blessed gift for elegance and agility, the strongest-willed of all. That is, back in his old clan.

The wildfire that robbed him of his only home, his only family, the strained cries of the clanmates he never got to save, never ceased to haunt him, even as he sleeps, the dreams would find a way to evoke his fear and pain, never leaving his worn body to rest.

It had almost been months since Rye had first walked the earth as a wanderer, a warrior turned loner by force, and it didn’t take long before he realises that hunting was a rather daunting task to fulfil; it had always been the hunter’s job back in his clan, and his talents were mainly focused on physical combat. The result of not being able to feed himself proper meal had caused him to lose a great number of his weight and turned his skills rusty, his coat a muddied mess of clumps and his limbs struggling to withstand all his weight, teetering unsteadily, threatening to give out right under him.

Rye hangs his head down low, smelling the earth precariously as he pawed through the foliage cautiously. He presumed that he had travelled far and reached another part of the forest due to its sudden change in atmosphere and scenery. It was a vast difference from bushes and berries to thick greens coating every inch of the ground and trees, with a canopy of leaves shrouding the tom around him. Rye feels a thread of unease stitch along his back, prickling his fur as his eyes darts quickly between the foliage.

Maybe it was a result of his exhaustion, but a rustle in the trees above to his right caught his attention, whipping about sharply - though wobbly, he focuses his attention above, squinting his eyes to peer between the dark spaces.

    Nothing.

Rye scowls slightly before turning away, continuing on his journey; to nowhere in particular, though he picks up his pace as he shoulders low-hanging branches aside, unaware of the dense area he was beginning to push himself through.

“You know, you might want to stay out of that place.”

He stops, frozen in his tracks as his ears perked up in attention, pivoting back and forth in an attempt to find the source of the voice.

“Quicksand, insects with venom so strong it could stop your heart, thorn branches, deadly cliffs,” Rye fixes his gaze ahead of him, watching an unfamiliar tom slink his way slowly down a thick branch, putting on a feat of grace as the muscles beneath his pelt shone with every movement he took, “you’re going nowhere, my dear friend.”

He jumps to the earth below, walking up to the intruder with his chest puffed, head held high in feigned arrogance.

    “Welcome to Vesuvia.”

Aether crosses the branch nimbly, putting his weight on a paw at first to test the old branch’s durability, then quickly hops over the stream in three swift steps.

He looks over to the other side of the ravine to find an apprehensive Eris, her tiny form crouched in uncertainty near the bank, a worried look plastered across her face as she attempts to follow after his steps, eyeing the height of the water below her with caution and distrust.

“One paw at a time, Eris, follow me and nothing would go wrong.”

    “But what if I fall?”

“I will catch you, I promise.”

Eris looks beneath her again, and with a single huff of breath, sprints across the branch impatiently before tumbling straight into the Count, a yelp of surprise escapes her throat.

A disgruntled grunt comes from within the Count’s chest, “Well, I do always catch you, don’t I?”

The apprentice laughs as she rolls off, pawing the air mischievously as playfulness shines in her eyes.

“Will I become a paladin one day?”

Aether throws a side glance to the apprentice before getting up, giving each limb a thorough stretch as a yawn forms, he averts his gaze to the trees above, as if looking past the leaves and towards the sky.

“Not paladin, mon amie, valkyrie. And we’ll see if you can catch up with...” Aether takes off in a sprint, taking Eris by complete surprise as he dodges boulders and weaves through foliage expertly, “me.”
