“Thank you.” Wren settled into the seat across from the captain at his approval, crossing her ankles underneath the table. She reached for one of the strawberries, removing the leafy top, before biting into the red fruit. The sweetness of the fruit exploded on her tongue and she savored the taste. Fruit could be especially finicky and ranged in flavor from time to time. As far as she was concerned, this was a good one. Finishing the other half of the strawberry, she tracked the cup of coffee that the captain held in hand as he lifted it to closer to his mouth and blew gently on the supposedly hot liquid. Her eyes remained on him as he began his train of thoughts, speaking of a variety of different things, darting from silence to his room to music. Following his train of thoughts patiently, it seemed to arrive on the topic of music.
“Music.” She repeated the word, shifting her weight forward towards the man. His question made her reach into the depths of her mind to grasp her fractured memories. Her memories of her past… were unreliable to say the least. “I haven’t listened to music, not on a personal level at least, not since- ” Conditioning. The word remained unspoken, a bridge she wasn’t quite ready to cross, nor mention. It was almost a taboo topic amongst most of the inhumans. She’d never heard it discussed or perhaps she wasn’t listening hard enough.
“- I was five,” she finished. Leaning back in her seat, she let out a quiet sigh, chasing away her lingering thoughts. “I prefer classical and instrumental music. The way each instrument plays their part in sync is beautiful.” She allowed a small pause between, just enough time to take apart another leafy top of her strawberry, before speaking once more. “And what about you, sir? If I were to step into this office of yours, what would I be hearing?”
“Huh? See what?” Hugo took a step back, glancing to the other rebel momentarily. This was not the introduction he had in mind. The sudden display of cupped ears from them caught him off-guard. Thinking he’d detected a note of urgency in their voice earlier, he flicked his powers off, unleashing the powers of anyone in closer proximity once again. The action was something a fellow gatherer had drilled into him - that he turn his negation off at the first sign of danger to free the others up with their abilities. In a single motion, he pushed his cup of coffee on the counter and quickly stepped back further from the other rebel to scan the room. Alert for the possibility of danger, he narrowed his eyes tracing a full circle around the mess hall. He didn’t see anything remotely suspicious amongst the other rebels or any questionable actions. Seeing the approach of the general, he paused and nodded once in greeting towards them. The question the general posed seemed more pointed towards the other rebel and he decided to let them answer on their own.
“I didn’t see anything,” he admitted slowly, raising an eyebrow at the rebel in an attempt to set them at ease. Seeing as though they were in no immediate danger, he released the hold he had on his negation, turning it back on. He moved closer to the counter to pull his coffee cup closer, but didn’t take a sip of it and tapped his fingers on the edge of the cup instead. He settled upon the fact that perhaps he’d startled the brunette - he’d met plenty of flighty people before. Perhaps one of the others had tossed a coffee cup across the room?
