corpses. and rain. she was nearly positive that's all san diego had to offer during the spring. dead bodies and more rain. always rain. she hadn't found anything scavenging, not even signs of life, and it had taken most of the morning. by the time she decided to hunt, it was past noon. fighting for survival was hard alone. josephine vaguely danced around the idea that perhaps it was because you had nothing left to live for when you're alone. just your own, selfish desires. and an empty stomach, walking dead, and heavy rain will beat any selfish desires you have out of you. all you want to do is sleep. but still she trudged on - nearly missing the quick mouse that skittered by. but her reflexes registered it before she did and with a swipe of her sword, she ended it's life. it was a pitiful thing, scrawny and underfed, its sharp angular bones highlighted by its soaked fur. the blonde wondered if she looked similar. josephine placed it in a leather bag made of an deer's hide and headed toward the big city. she was careful not to head too far in, considering the dead ruled san diego. she knew only have a few safe places in the city, all of which were run by gangs or their affiliates. she avoided them at all costs. they were ravagers; taking what they wanted and leaving chaos in their wake. as if the apocalypse wasn't hard enough. her foot hit something hard and it scraped against the concrete, spreading out a few feet in front of her. josephine’s eyes widened as she realized it was a bow, with several arrows scattered around. she glanced around quickly to ensure the noise had not attracted any walkers, before gathering the arrows and the bow itself into her arms. she hung the bow over her shoulder and placed the arrows into her bag. stiffening as she heard foot steps behind her, josephine drew her sword from its sheath. as she turned around, hesitation rocked her. the blonde wasn't staring at the dead; she was staring at a blood covered human. the rain had made the blood run down her face, dripping onto the street below their feet.
"that was my bow, ravager. give it here." the woman's eyes looked cold and hard, but josephine wasn't afraid. she had dealt with many survivors in the past - and though she never killed one - she always either frightened them off or ran herself.
"i'm not-" josephine started, before cutting herself off. "it's mine." the brunette rolled her eyes and gestured to a mangled corpse against the wall. it had a bullet hole in its head, but looked like it had fallen from above.
"i killed the corpse guarding that weapon. believe me, it's not yours." she reaffirmed. josephine realized this woman wasn't even holding a weapon - perhaps she had lost the gun that killed the walker. or maybe, she was lying.
"if you killed it, where's your gun?" the other woman stiffened immediately and began backing away. her muse to win this weapon had failed. josephine sighed softly and ran her fingers through her soaked hair. she had started to shiver, despite the warm temperature around them. she thought back to the rain catchers she had laid out at the top of her apartment and her mouth began to thirst. "i'm not a ravager." she told her.
"then why are you dressed like one?" she shot back, referring to josephine's tattered clothes.
"keeps most of them away. i don't like to fool around with city people." she explained, sheathing her sword decisively. "i live away from here. it's not the most secure, but it used to be. what's your name?"
"it's lori green." she answered, her eyes flicking with nervousness. "you're not from here, are you?"
"no, my mother is from canada and i was raised there. we were vacationing here when the end of the world happened." josephine gave a small smile. "my name is josephine." she unhooked the bow from her shoulder and tossed it to lori. "maybe when i trust you, you can have the arrows." lori appeared grateful as she fumbled around with the weapon.
"i was a doctor before. i had just gotten out of med school. violence doesn't come naturally to me." she explained hesitantly. she wiped the blood from her face with her sleeve, cursing the rain under her breath.
"yeah, it doesn’t come easily to me, either.” she mumbled, before continuing. “there's safety in numbers. besides, i don't like hanging out in ravager territory too long. it's time i went home." as josephine began walking away, she looked back at lori, who still had not moved from her spot. "are you coming with me or not?"
