benji had to admit, he was relieved to have something to take him away from the work he was doing. and it was getting closer and closer to closing time. he helped the woman in front of sophie before looking to sophie. he tried to give her a gentle smile and took the book, opening it and checking it out for her. "hi. this is a nice pick. i read through it once and it was interesting enough," benji said, looking at her and raising the book a bit. "you aren't one of my usuals, you know. what inspired you to come?" he was curious and he wanted to make small talk, so what better question could he ask? probably a lot of things, if he was being honest. he was probably going to creep her out. he should probably stop talking so much. and why was he overthinking himself so much? maybe because he usually didn't talk to people if he didn't have to. but he supposed he'd have to start sometime, wouldn't he? so it might as well be now.

Sophie mentally rolled her eyes at herself, feeling so flustered and awkward wasn’t like her. Usually, talking to guys came rather easily for the girl. She smiled a little at his words and nodded “Yeah, I watched the movie and figured that I’d give it a try.” she said with a little shrug as she ran a hand through her hair. She listened to his words and shrugged her shoulders once more “Figured I’d try something new, gives me something to do at work when the shop is empty.” she replied. She wondered herself why she even picked up a book, she doesn’t usually read. Would she even read it? Wouldn’t hurt to try. If there was a different librarian here.. would she have even picked it up off the shelf? Now that was a good question, and one she did not have an answer to.

benji nodded a bit. "i've never seen the movie. i don't really go out to see them often. i don't buy them much either. but it seems interesting enough," he told sophie. "oh, uh, i should probably give you this back now," he said awkwardly and handed the book back to sophie. "sorry," he apologized. he mentally slapped himself for doing that so awkwardly. "uh, anyways. if you wanted maybe we could talk sometime? you know, without.. them knowing about it. and without them finding out," he suggested, unsure why he even suggested it. she probably just wanted to leave. "or not, we don't have to if you don't want to. have a nice day, i'm sorry for mentioning it," he apologized again, a bit anxious now. he was messing it all up, wasn't he?

Sophie took the book back "Oh, uh thanks." she responded, her own words coming out awkwardly as she took the book back and set it down on the counter. She glanced down at the cover of the book before she looked up at him as he spoke. She smiled a little, he was interested in talking to her too? Maybe they could even be secret friends. "I would actually. Uh. I would like that, talking to you." she said, playing with a strand of her hair slightly nervously. She was slightly annoyed with herself that she was so nervous, she never got nervous in a guy's presence. Well, not usually. So why was this so different? Their parents would never know, they would never find out, and what was the harm in talking anyway? It's not like it would or could go any further.

benji nodded again, a bit quickly this time. he paused when he processed that she had actually said that she'd like to talk to him more. "wait, really? you- you'd like to talk to me? okay, uh, great, where- where should we meet up? or do we just, meet here to talk? i don't think this is the best place because it's a library but-" he cut himself off, ending his rambling. "sorry," he apologized, rubbing the back of his head. he internally cursed himself for stuttering as much as he did. he usually wasn't this awkward, was he? he really wouldn't know, he hadn't been able to have too many normal conversations recently. but hey, he was getting one now and he might as well make the best of it. at least, that's what he thought.

Sophie listened to his words, smiling slightly in amusement by his stuttering. She figured that he was also nervous like she was, this was all new. Well, disobeying her parents wasn't. But, talking to him was. "How about at that cute coffee shop in town? I usually go there everyday anyway." she said with a shrug, hoping that he'd agree to go. She wasn't sure why, but she wanted to get to know him more. Which was the most she could say for any guy that she had talked to or associated with in a long time. She usually didn't get to know them, which she wasn't too proud of. But, this was innocent, this was different. "Tomorrow?" she asked with a slight head tilt. She would have done it today, but Cassie and her had a party to go to later and she couldn't be late again or her friend would kill her.

benji gave another quick smile. "yeah! i mean, yeah, that works with me," he said, not wanting to come off as too thrilled. he really needed to act calmer, more alright with all of this. he tried to puff out his chest and act more confident. "i've never been to the coffee shop. i assume they have something good if you go there everyday." he glanced down at his feet for a moment before looking back up at sophie. "tomorrow is okay with me. what time?" he asked. "and did you want to like.. exchange numbers or do you think we could get caught with that?" if they couldn't text, maybe they could create fake emails or just face accounts on a different website. nobody could figure the two out then, could they? the chances were small if they could, he guessed.

Sophie nodded "They have really good coffee, and a good selection of food." she said with another little smile. She shrugged "Uh... noon sound good?" she asked as she scribbled her phone number down on a piece of paper and slid it to him. "Hey, I mean, they can't catch us if they don't know who we're texting." she responded with a playful wink, getting more into her normal character. She figured that if she put his number under a different name, no one would catch on. And hopefully he would get the same idea. Her parents usually didn't see her phone anyway, so she figured she'd hopefully be safe.

benji hummed. "alright, hope it isn't too expensive. paying for overpriced coffee isn't really my thing. i'll go either way though," he told sophie. "noon is good with me if it's good with you." benji took the paper that was passed to him and grabbed a slip of his own. he wrote down his own phone number quickly but still in the neatest handwriting he could do. he handed it over to her with a mumbled 'thank you.' "i guess you're right there. as long as we don't actually type our names then probably nobody would catch on. i'm sorry our families kinda hate each other, by the way," he apologized, even though it really wasn't his fault. he had a tendency to apologize way more than he really needed to.

Sophie shook her head “I don’t have enough money to spend on overpriced coffee,” she replied and nodded in response to the time being good as she took the slip of paper from him. She folded the paper and placed it in her pocket carefully so it wouldn’t get ruined. She shrugged as she looked back up at him. “Who knows why they even do..” she said softly “But I kind of have a feeling I partly am to blame.” she mumbled, offering a tiny smile. She knew that the way she acted wasn’t great, and she knew that’s why not many people liked her. But, as she saw it, when you’re young, you should live. “Hey listen.” she started, playing with a strand of hair awkwardly “I don’t know if you’d be into it, but there’s this party. It’s an open party. There’s a pool, lot of people we graduated from school with. We’ll be there if you’re interested.” she told him, her gaze lowered so she wouldn’t see him trying to decide how to turn down his invitation.
