- ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Tori groaned in annoyance, eyeing the social worker right behind her who tapped their foot in impatience. Understanding that they weren't leaving until she settled in, Tori scratched the nape of her neck and reluctantly went inside her shared room, and collapsed onto the bottom bunk that nestled in the back corner of the room. Old books and brochures were scattered around the step of her bunk, none of them belonging to her but rather the person who was reading on the top bunk.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Dusty those old, dumb books were. Tori always swore that if she ever tripped over one again, she'd rip those books into shredded newspaper, then hand them over to the fireplace. Of course, her bunk buddy had profoundly refused for Tori to do that, saying that if he ever witnessed Tori even give his precious books the wrong look, he'd be the one to tear her up. And he lived up to that promise all too well. It was a long time before Tori even tried to attempt to even touch the boy's books. The teenager could say that she feared nothing, but couldn't deny that it was the first and last attempt she ever messed with her bunk buddy's books. Who knew someone could kill over books?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"(Got caught being off premises again Tori, hm?)" Said roommate inquired, not sparing Tori a glance from above. From what Tori knew, that bookworm had his nose in a book like a bulldog pushing its wrinkly face against its owner's in excitement. Tori cringed at the connection, banging her head against the not-so-soft mattress. She hated her brain, sometimes.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀She wasn't gonna lie though, her roommate did kind of look like a bulldog if you looked hard enough. Joking.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"(God, get off of my [retracted], Lukas! Face me like a real man!)" Tori scoffed with a smile and started to shake the frame of the bunk bed, making damn sure that Lukas felt it. The latter laughed at Tori's attempt but didn't seem to make a move to do anything. The teenager heard a flip of a page and rolled her eyes in disbelief before glancing at the floor. She had an idea.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Tori pulled herself upright and let her legs swing off the bed. She pried one of his precious leather-covered books off the floor, before weighing it on her palm while her other hand gripped to Lukas' bed frame. Next thing Lukas would know is seeing Tori jump and slam one of his books in his face.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀He yelped in surprise, backing up from the force and hitting the back of his head against the concrete wall. Tori wheezed before putting a hand to her mouth to muffle the noise and then bursting out in laughter. Lukas' pale skin flushed beet red from embarrassment, only fueling the girl's amusement. "(This isn't funny- you better stop laughing! Larsen, stop laughing! Oh my god...)" Lukas pinched the bridge of his nose and threw the book that she assaulted him with, and let it collide nosily on the ground.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Only moments after, a loud scratching noise horribly sang back. It made Tori jump slightly, eyeing where the sound was coming from nervously. Tori imagined long, slender fingers menacingly ranking its claws against the walls to produce the sound of nails on a chalkboard. The two teenagers both fell silent, Tori's laughter and Lukas' annoyance quickly put on hold. They stared the cased opening- the only way in and out from the room- with almost bewildered looks.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"(I'm not going insane right? You heard that Tori, right?)"
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"(Yeah... I did,)" Tori said before quieting down, hearing distant moaning and groaning that was deep and hoarse. Like it was in immense pain. They could hear multiple heavy, drawn-out steps from just down the hall. "(...I'm gonna check out who it is-)"
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"(Are you crazy?! For all we know they-)" Lukas whisper-shouted, before Tori hushed him. The sound of tapping from dress shoes and brisk walking contrasted with the slow, heavy ones they heard earlier. They saw a group of adults pass their door, not sparing a glance to Tori and Lukas as they warily shifted themselves to the back of the room. "(The social workers..?)" Lukas questioned lowly, letting Tori curtly nod to confirm his suspicions.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"(Hey! You three, what are you doing, dressed all filthy? And what is that smell?)" An older, feminine voice yelled out sternly. What responded back was vicious hissing and snapping, the sounds the unfriendly dog's would make every time you'd pass by. Tori could hear the workers whisper to each other in shaky tones, but she assumed they were standing their ground.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀From there, her mind was completely off from what was right outside and went to work. Tori looked around the room hastily trying to find something to defend themselves with to no avail. Stupid safety precautions. She looked towards Lukas, who was listening and staring at the doorway with wide eyes as if he expected a monster to leap out.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"(Is there anything we could use as a weapon?)" Tori hurriedly asked Lukas, who took a moment to snap out of his daze to respond.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"(J-Jamie's steel toe boots. He's been hiding them from the workers, and there his father's before you know...)" Lukas replied hesitantly before abruptly flinching like a jumpy and frightened feline. The sound of figures skidding towards something and a social worker's piercing cry silenced them both. Tori took a deep breath, trying to settle her own nerves before going to the next bunk bed over. She dropped to her knees and started searching for the boots. They weren't hard to spot, as they stood in the darkest corner under the bottom bunk.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Tori quickly swiped them up and slipped off her running shoes in favor of putting on the hard duty steel toe boots. What the hell was she gonna do with steel boots? Kick their enemies to death? She didn't know, but it was better than nothing. There was more crying from other people, yelling, kids and adults running everywhere. The commotion was instant like a flash of lightning. Tori hadn't appreciated how peaceful it was just moments ago, with the high-pitched laughter from younger children playing among themselves, and the light chatter from workers while Lukas and herself talked to each other in their own little bubble. Now, everything was just chaos. A man from outside made eye contact with the two and shouted at them before running, pushing away a green and pale figure that was in their way. His shouting wouldn't help Tori in the slightest, though. "KJØRE! KJØRE!" (Run! Run!)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Lukas didn't hesitate to up and leave at that, abandoning his precious books that apparently weren't precious enough for him to give up his life. Only when he saw the horrifying scene steps away from the cased opening did he shakily run back into the room. His eyes traveling to Tori before snapping his gaze back at the door.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Tori saw the blood flow and spread on the marble flooring like a lazy, running river. It was dark red and glistened under the buildings yellow, fluorescent lights. Chunks of muscle and tissue splattered around the mangled body. She could only see to the woman's disfigured chest from where she was, and just from that glance made her sick. What made her tense up was the monster on top of her, doing all this to the woman. It's skin, so wrinkly and loose that Tori felt like it could just peel off right then and there. Abnormally long and bony fingers, with nails as sharp as it's yellow, canine-like teeth. Its eyes that were all white, it's pupils rolled into the back of its head. Deformed, twisting, gut-wrenching. You could tell it was human, but it held no humanity. It was barely human. It was sloppy, with no respect or concept of it as it gorily stuffed flesh into its mouth.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Nope. No way in hell was she dying by that thing's hands. She wasn't gonna die in this forsaken orphanage. If Tori was fulfilling that plan in running away from the orphanage, right now would be a good time.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The genius brain of hers clicked when it saw the awning window. Ah! An escape route!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Tori ran towards the window, fiddling with the latch on it before it slid open with a soft click. She pushed on the window with her might, with the drive to escape the room and avoid the orphanage like the plague once and for all. Pushing the stiff window outward, she was stopped mid-way through the job when Lukas started to hurry her in a quiet, begging tone that made her tense up at.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"(Please, please, please, Tori, hurry up,)" Lukas desperately said in a quiet voice, rocking Tori gently by the shoulders as he looked behind them in a paranoid manner. Tori glanced behind her to see the zombie kick away the mangled body under it, not interested in the carcass anymore. It was all on fours, as it crawled towards them, bringing closer the suffocating and metallic smell of blood with it. Tori pushing, thrusting her hands against it one last time to make the window jut out all the way. The teenager started to climb out, placing one foot on the window stool while the other went through the gap. Tori slipped out, her body colliding with the hard ground with an audible thud.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀She whimpered at the sudden and sharp pain on her right side. While she cautiously stood up from the floor, Tori lightly rubbed her side with her arm. Even though her body ached like an old person's bones, she was glad and lucky that nothing broke. With a quick sigh of relief, Tori started to run away from the building now that she was out. But she was quickly stopped by the shouting of her name,
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"(Tori, Tori, Tori, TORI!)" Lukas called out her name in a terrifying tone, making her whip around as her eyes gazed up at the window. What she saw was Lukas, holding onto the window for dear life as the lime-headed creature attacked Lukas from behind, clawing at the pale boy with its talons and trying to pry it's prey away from the window. Before Tori could even react, the jutted window slammed into its frame, catching Luka's fingers and making him let go. His expression, characterized in uncontrollable fear and panic before being viciously pulled down by the monster, out of Tori's line of vision. Seeing what that thing did to that worker... Tori didn't want to know what it was doing to him. She knew one thing though,
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Lukas was a goner. There wasn't a shred of doubt in her mind about that.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Something felt morally wrong as she continued to run away without a glance back. Sickness twisted and turned in her gut as the taste of bile coaxed the back of her throat. She heard Lukas yell and scream in pain as the zombie sloppily tore into him. Horrifying, it was. Tori trembled at the thought of Lukas. She wanted to sprint back, break open the window and heave the thing off Lukas. Then, drag him with her and they'll both survive together. But Tori knew it wasn't gonna happen unless she wanted herself dead. She couldn't play hero now.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀So Tori focused on the heavy and rapid steps she took. The stolen boot's slapping against the concrete sidewalk as they treaded over the edge of the grassy ground. Her lungs, not ready for the next breath after she exhaled, and the pounding of her heart that drummed in her ears. Without much thought, Tori feverishly avoided the open street that was occupied by small clutches that held replicas of the monster from before. She backed up, changing her plan at the change of a dime when seeing the packs, and headed to the back of the church that resided next to the orphanage.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The church was affiliated with the orphanage, and Tori had fond memories of her and the other orphans playing games like hide n' seek. She remembered her younger self, searching and twisting around the pews as if it was a maze that she needed to escape from. Pretending not to see hiding kids, and then scaring them from behind to see their surprised reactions always made Tori laugh. It was fun until they all got older and accidentally broke one of the stained glass windows. Tori and the others got kicked out for eternity, but they sneak in often than not while the priest and nuns weren't there.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀When they broke that window, one of their many punishments over that unbearably hot summer was to fix the neglected garden in the back. They busted their asses under the glaring and hissing sun to bring that garden into good shape, but that's not the point. The church had a small and kind of depressing shed with gardening tools and the like hooked onto the walls. You could probably see where Tori was going with this.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Pulling the shed door open with a mighty swing, its hinges eerily creaked behind her as she passed the threshold. Tori rifled through the items hooked up on the walls of the dark shed; running her fingers lightly over sharp tips before setting them back on the hooks. The tools that she remembered they had from last summer were all here collecting dust. Rakes, trowels, planters, a pair of hedge shears, and Tori could make out the shape of a gardening hoe in the back (Tori snorted a bit at that). Of course, this stupid church shed wouldn't have anything weapon worthy, but she did know they had a shovel. They had forbidden the punished kids to use it because one of them threatened to wack the other with it. Those were good times.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀It was relatively easy to find the shovel, seeing that it was leaning against the wall at the very back. Tori picked it up and held it by its shaft, weighing it in her hands. It was heavy enough for her to swing and knock someone with, but it was light enough to not slow her down. If she just pretended it was a bat and swung it like one with loads of force, Tori felt like she could knock one of those green, skin-peeling creatures dead. It was a decent weapon in her opinion, but some would call her crazy. Maybe she got the end of the stick, with useless steel toe boots that could probably do as much as hurt her own feet, and a shovel (that was admittedly, the best thing she had at the moment.) But, it was better having something than nothing. She couldn't rely on the damn shovel forever, though.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"(What [retracted] supplies I got,)" Tori murmured harshly to no one as she briskly walked out of the shed to an abrupt stop, heart racing at the sight of three figures dressed as nuns, their stances unusually slump instead of their trained uptight poses. They all resembled one of those things now, with wrinkly green skin and all white eyes, their jaws wide open with drool coaxing their lower jaws. Disgusting, those things were definitely not nuns now. Were people getting infected by these things?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Tori really didn't know what in the world was happening, now that she thought about.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Her grip on the shovel tightened as she dashed away from the group, hoping they had a slow reaction time to give herself the head start. She could hear them dragging themselves forward in a haste to grab onto her. The spitty hiss' they made with their decaying yellow teeth resembled the hiss of a rattlesnake as they tried to snap at Tori ends. A zombie thrust itself onto Tori's back, forcefully pushing her down. She felt it's hot breath fan against her neck, making Tori shiver in absolute disgust. The orphan girl twisted herself around, holding the shovel to shield herself as the infected nun started to dumbly snap at the shovel. Seeing the other two nuns closing in from behind, Tori tried to pull away to have her fingernails sink into the flesh of the zombie. Repulsed by the sight of flesh and skin peeling off to reveal bone, Tori rapidly kicked it in its stomach, a degrading substance clung onto her boots and splattered over her baggy pants. She grimaced, covering her mouth as stabbed the zombie in the throat with the blade of her shovel, using her weapon almost like a hook to hurl the thing off her.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Stumbling onto her own feet, she stepped back and planted her back foot into the ground. Raising her shovel to her shoulder, Tori swung it at the accompanying Walker's head. A sickening crack rung in her ears as it toppled over, with its head dented in and decaying substance oozing out as it lay unconscious. That's when Tori ran, making a beeline for the forest that resided behind the church. It was a place she was familiar with, a place where she could stay for hours if the workers didn't find her every time she'd escape from the orphanage.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Tori lifted her face, letting the light passing through the tree's leaves dapple her skin. Shadows stretch over her figure as the girl continued further into the forest. She wearily looked around her, her knuckles turning white as her grip on her shovel tightened. The stench of rotting flesh and blood that clung onto her clothes. Rancid, the smell was. It was like coagulating soup that wasted at the bottom of a trash can. Honest to god, it also smelled like a cat had pissed on her. Gross.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀She let herself pass through the maze of trees, soon realizing that she hadn't been this deep into the forest before. Tori kept going through, keeping her shovel right next to her until she cut through the forest, reaching the end of the forest. Looking out, she saw a town nestled near the coast. Beautiful mountains towered over the town's bright colored houses. Tori let her feet carry her to the town as she wearily passed through. Nothing disturbed her as she stepped through the streets of Ostwall. That was the name judging by the signs at least. For such a beautiful town, it seemed abandoned. Maybe it was her luck. Tori walked to the docks, empty of any boats or sails. She assumed that those people had seen those monsters, and taken off to the sea. Smart.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The heels of her boots dug into the gravel and were kicked behind her as Tori went to stand on the dock. The wood creaked under her as she stopped walking mid-way on deck. She looked at the mountains that Norway was known for from the distance as the sky pitched into a dark blue. Sea froth was carried with the small, crashing wave as it lapped against the shore. The smell of fresh cod filled her nose.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀She looked behind her one last time, glad to see nothing stalking towards her. Tori wedged her shovel into the gaps of the wood, letting it stand by itself. It was quiet, almost peaceful if Tori wasn't shaken up. It was an abrupt change from the chaos that ensued not moments ago. Those things travel, they must've been everywhere by now. It won't be long until this place becomes just another feasting ground for those brain-eating creatures.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Her hand's clenched into fists as she thought back to the damage those things have done. Have they hurt the other children as they have with Lukas? Did everyone she remotely cared about die? Why didn't that adult save her and Lukas when he had the chance? Why didn't she save Lukas? Pain and anger churned within, hungry to point the emotions she felt on something and to blame. The pressure to do this alone weighed on her shoulders. There were many times where she felt alone, but that was something Tori hadn't felt in a while. She didn't need to, not when she had the people in the orphanage at her side. Even if she wasn't very well-liked there, they were family. Her only family.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Tori's walls started to weaken and crumble. Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes and fall from her chin, drenching her clothes. Perhaps they'd mask the smell of rotten flesh and wash off the grime and blood. Her nails dug into the palms of her nails as Tori quickly rubbed her eyes dry with her sleeve. But the unwanted tears just came back. Tori tried to calm herself down by taking deep breaths, but she just started to hiccup and choke on the saltiness of her tears.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Those monsters just had to ruin it all, didn't they?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"(Dammit...! I told myself I wouldn't cry.)"
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀She kept rubbing her eyes dry until her skin became red from the roughness of the cloth.
