The creaking of the swing, the warm breeze, and the hypnotic movement of stroking Isaac’s soft fur made it hard for Heath to stay awake. When the duo had found this place three months ago, they were both skeptical. They had the expectations of buildings overflowing with zombies and death, but the town was surprisingly abandoned; the only trace of past civilization being the remaining cans of food and structure. Heath had taken a liking to the sheriff’s building. He figured people would stumble upon this place eventually, and he’d be in charge. Sheriffs practically ran towns back in the old west, so he saw it as a symbol of his authority. That and it had the most comfortable bed. There were also a few jail cells, which would be helpful once a member joined, just to make sure they weren't infected. It would be easy to keep an eye on them for the period of time needed to deem they were safe to be around. There had to be more than twenty buildings, all with beds, some with multiple. He hadn’t done a thorough search of every single nook and cranny, but with time it would get done. Isaac stirred and it pulled Heath from his thoughts. He smiled down at the golden dog. He was loyal, and not to mention so gosh darn cute. Heath tilted his head. Isaac’s eyes were wide open and his ears were straight up. Suddenly, the golden dog’s head shot up, eyes flicking around the main street that sprawled out in front of the sheriff’s building. He stayed motionless for a few silent heartbeats and then launched himself off the swing, scampering to the left, running down one of the side roads. Heath was quick to follow, but he wasn’t nearly as fast as the dog. He jumped over the railing, landing in the dust and jogged after Isaac, tugging his bandana over his face and grabbing a loose pipe in case he needed to defend himself and his partner. Heath made his way down the street, kicking up dust behind him. He stopped at the crossroad in the center of town. He started to spin around, turning in circles to try and see where Isaac went. Panic was starting to bubble in his chest. He couldn’t lose him. Not now. Not after months of survival and bonding. Not after his brother, who he’d named the dog after. He couldn’t. He didn’t know what he’d do. Thankfully, just as his mind was jumping to the worst of conclusions, Heath heard the sounds of growling and spitting. And then a whimper. Defensive instinct kicked in and he tightened the grip on his pipe, rushing to the area he heard the commotion. He rounded the corner of a building to see Isaac growling, fur puffed out in a golden cloud, snapping at a man. The man in question had a wooden beam aimed threateningly at the canine. “S-Stay back!” He warned, then he saw Heath “H-Hey! Get out of here! This wylf is gunna kill both of us!” Heath took a step forward and furrowed his brow. He was getting closer to Isaac, and so was the man. The man took a swing at Isaac but Heath caught the plank, ripping it from the stranger’s grip and taking it in his own hands. He brought it down over his knee, splintering the board in half. He tossed the pieces absent-mindedly and stood beside the dog. He gave his head a little pat and Isaac went from instant death mode to his usual happy self, tongue lolling and tail wagging. Heath smiled down at him, though it was concealed by the piece of cloth over his face. Heath made eye contact with the man, who’s eyes were as big as the sun above them. Heath was taller than him, and obviously more confident, as the stranger shrunk under his shadow. He grabbed a fistfull of his shirt and lifted him slightly from the ground. “If you go after my dog again, I’ll beat yer brains out.” He growled in his ear. Then, he released him, dropping him to the ground. The stranger just laid there, chest heaving and staring after the two as they walked away from them. Heath stopped at the mouth of the alley, looking over his shoulder. “Well,” He huffed “Ya comin’?”

The man sat with his back against the cell’s stone wall. “Sorry about earlier.” He apologized. Heath handed the man, who’s name was Michael, a small glass of water. He shrugged. “It’s ok. From what you describe them as, these wylfs sound like nasty things.” Heath sighed, returning to the couch that Isaac watched the two from, head on his paws. He took off his hat, revealing the mess of dark brown hair that was hiding beneath, and set it on the side table. He tugged down his bandana and took a sip of his water, tilting his head slightly to make sure no water escaped from the burnt side of his face. The past three months had given him plenty of practice operating with his injury; being half blind had been proven to be especially difficult. “Also, I’m sorry about the threat I gave you. It’s just. Isaac here means a lot to me.” He told him, offering an apologetic smile “And for this. (he motioned to the cell with his gloved hand) It’s just a precautionary thing. We don’ want no zombies among us. I understan’ if you wanna leave. But if you wanna stay, there’s plen-y of room for ya! Plus, no one should be alone in the apocalypse y’know?” Heath had his back turned, so he was unable to see the slight blush that spread across Michael’s face. He smiled and ran his fingered through his hair. “I think I’d like that. I’ll stick around.”
