Between the several different Ojibwe bands that formed, Red Cliff and Bad River had one of the more interesting dynamics between the two bands. Originally driving the two apart from the uniform La Pointe Ojibwe, the divide between Christian and traditional Ojibwe was their main difference. Increased missionary activity from Roman Catholic priests intensified heavily, further driving a wedge between the two groups. In 1854, a treaty was made that formally split the groups into the Red Cliff and Bad River Ojibwe. As the Bad River Ojibwe were considered to be pagans, they were subject to the aggressive assimilation tactics such as boarding schools.
Along with their religions, their economies were also differently structured. Red Cliff focused initially on fishing, switching briefly to logging as the fishing business had too much outside competition; their logging eventually led to a crash in the economy as they used up all the loggable forest. The tribe turned to outside employment as their farming potential was dampened by the ravaging caused by poor logging practices. Bad River sustained themselves on their prime rice-yielding wetlands but was plagued by corruption and monopolies in the economy. Money grafting was also a problem, as this ultimately resulted in a loss of land for the Bad River Ojibwe. Both economies suffered a depression, even preceding the Great Depression in 1929.
They also were similar in their interests in the well-being of their peoples and the environment. Red Cliff opened a children's center aimed at immersing their youth in traditional culture; Bad River opened a hospital with a full range of healthcare, including dental services. Both also had their fair share of environmental victories. Bad River successfully deterred a harmful mining operation by Exxon that had the potential to damage their fragile rice crops and the surrounding environment, and Red Cliff created Frog Bay Tribal National Park, a preserve that was the first of its kind.
