Act of Kindness Story:I had a classmate who I was curious about, and I was determined that today was going to be the day I learned about her. I had previously noticed that she frequently sat alone, and that when she sat at a table other than her usual one with other people, she sat there in a quiet, inattentive manner. Today would be different than any of those days though, for while she wouldn’t be alone, she wouldn’t be forced to interact with multiple people, and if they wanted me to I would leave as well, unless I felt that something was off.
I headed over to her table and asked for permission to sit with her. She seemed mildly confused as to why I would want to sit with her, but allowed me to sit there. I noticed she only had an apple and offered her some of my food. She declined, but I could tell that she wished her pride would allow her to accept. I asked about her life and she gave me some details, but left out parts of it, and only ever mentioned one parent.
We slowly became acquaintances, and then friends. She slowly let me know more about her life, and I told her about mine. My childhood was nowhere near as sad or broken as hers, but we both had our problems and that helped us bond.
I came to school one day to find my locker broken into and my stuff strewn across the hallway. She volunteered to let me share her locker as she knew administration would do nothing about it, and to help me clean it up. That was the day I learned her name. It was a beautiful name, Lula. Since that day, I’ve been giving her food, as she’s been accepting it as she knows it’s not out of pity, but out of love, care, and friendship. [317 words]

The night after our wedding, she let me know how much I had changed her life with the simple action of sitting down and eating with her. She let me know how bad her mental health had been, how much she had previously been abused, how she had been restricting her food intake to minimize how much of a burden she was on others, how she had been partaking in self-destructive habits, and what her plans for after school had been that day. The first time... I had been at the shelter for a couple weeks when I was finally given a reason to outreach to the therapist that was provided to those of us there for free. Someone had sat with me at lunch, out of her own free will, was kind to me, and it finally allowed me to realize that I didn’t want to die, I didn’t want to starve. It allowed me to realize that I wanted to live life, and live it well.
The therapist asked me what had brought me here, and I completely broke down. I told them about the anxiety attacks, about the depression stifling my emotions, about the auditory hallucinations of people yelling, about the visual hallucination of outlines of other beings, about the memory gaps, about how my mind was fractured between multiple personalities, and about how contact of things warmer than me hurt. I told them about how I bruised myself, about how I cut myself, about how I restricted my food intake to minimize how much of a burden I was on others, about how I wanted to end my life sometimes, and about how that had been my plan for after school that day until she sat with me at lunch. I told them about the physical and verbal abuse before the divorce, about the verbal and sexual abuse and neglect since the divorce, and about how that was the reasons I ran away from home.
The therapist asked me if it was okay to make physical contact. I told them yes, and they pulled me into a bear hug. They told me that they would help me file charges against my parents so that they could never do this to me again and to come see them for weekly therapy appointments.

A few months later, there were charges pressed against my parents for abuse, neglect, and molestation. My therapist presented the notes from our appointments, my friend Dylan told the court what I had told her, and I told the court of my life before running away from home. We won the case.
The therapist asked I was okay with them adopting me once we got out of the building. I was. [370 words]
Extra 1: The night after the wedding, I finally managed to tell someone how bad it truly had been for reasons other than I was paying them to help me find better ways to deal with it. I finally managed to share the full details of my mental health, of my abuse, and of my destructive habits. It made Dylan cry, but I could tell she was proud of me for finally getting that weight off my shoulders. I was proud of myself as well.
After that, we started going to therapy again. Both of us stopped about the time we got out of school, but looking at ourselves, we could tell there was still things we needed help with. Once a month, both of us and our therapists meet together to discuss our progress, problems, and things we had revealed. It has been good for us. [145 words]
Extra 2: I held the little one in complete awe and wonder, amazed what the two of us had created. I asked if we could name our child Usnavi, and she was fine with it.
That little one brought us so much joy, but now it is his turn to find his place in the world and find someone to love. We did our best to raise him well, even though we could always tell that he was a wanderer who would someday leave home, possibly never to return. I hope that he can be the person for someone else that Dylan was for me. [103 words]
