"I looked, I looked, I looked!" Nobody would believe me, nobody would care. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry."
I'm talking in threes, a nervous tick. Threes, they calm, repeat, and distance me from the distress I'm feeling.
"It must be there! How could it not be! I swear I placed it there yesterday!" The anger in their voice scares me.
"It's not, It's not, it's not!" Oh, gods, I can't stop. The threes, this tick, it's making me even more upset.
"Stop that! You're not Jacob two-two!" They growl, and I cower. I can't stop, and now I can't say anything. "Look again, harder this time!"
I go, i doubt. What am I supposed to do? I rearranged everything already, moved each individual item across the room and back.
"Oh no, oh no, oh no!" I'm frantically searching, this heirloom, it's lost. I stop, I breathe, I relax. I know it's not here, and yet I doubt what I see, doubt what I know, because what if i missed it?
"Never mind... I found it." They tell me, holding up the ring with a sheepish look. I knew I was right! It wasn't in my room! "Sorry."
I say nothing, my mind still racing, so instead I nod. 'It's okay,' it says, this movement of my head, 'I know you didn't mean it.'
This self-doubt caused struggles in my mind, but it's okay. I'll get better and make it through.
