Dog Owner Chat V. 5

I think that I really need to get Atlas into some puppy-training lessons.
I have no one with a dog that I can get him socialised with, and no nearby dog parks or closed off beaches.

So far, my 3lb chihuahua has barked at 2 alaskan malamutes, 2 german shepherds and a staffie, in the span of three walks.

He isn't aggressive or anything, a nice lady let him sniff her elderly golden retriever/lab and he licked 'em.

I've actually seen some really well trained Chi's in the past!! How old is he? They can be great dogs as long as you don't treat them as accessories or over baby them! I don't treat my great danes any different than teacup dogs. It's all the same training!

Ugh, no, of course not! I have a chihuahua x jack russell who we don't baby at all.
Playtime is rough and tumble and that's that. Pip loves clothes though - Atlas hates 'em.
Atlas is a year and a half now.

^^ When shopping for Fish yesterday, I saw a girl on the street chatting to her friend with her chihuahua wrapped up in her arms like a baby. Like an actual burrito baby, proper bundled up. It wasn't a cold day and it wasn't a puppy, it was madness.

Sorry, I meant to reply sooner. Thank you for the advice guys. We do intend to downgrade to two mediums (in the same room) once they're older, so they'll have separate cages if they want their own space and when they need to be separated. Other than that, yeah it'll be hard having two dogs that live together separate, but I'd rather train them and take them out separately rather than together, my aunts boxador is impossible to train around his mother but they get taken out separately so they're not madly obsessed with each other.
I'm not going to input on the whole whether littermate syndrome is real or not, so simply thank you all for your help c:

Chihuahua's are so easily spoiled. Big eyes, big head (compared to body), and lack of balance makes them seem like actual babies/toddlers. I wouldn't say their my favourite dog, but they can be just like any other with appropriate care.

deacon and I are taking part in a Instagram fitness challenge! I haven't posted anything on it because I'm bad.. At social media. But we've been following along! It's been really fun, for the " go to a place you've never been before " part of the challenge a few days ago we explored a park and deacon had so much fun playing in a lake we found! Eek.

That's all. I'm never online anymore. But deacon is doing good. Finally leArned weaves, and we're working on disk stuff.

So, my big rottie/lab mix is visiting for the week, and my yorkie hates her for seemingly no reason. She keeps growling and snapping and tried to bite her throat twice. It got so bad that my big dog started growling and snapping back. I was essentially in the middle of a dog fight for a few seconds! My big dog hasn't really done anything wrong from what I can see. Maybe they both think they're in charge? Whatever it is, if my yorkie tries to pick a fight my mutt, she is going to get killed, but they need to coexist for the time being. What a nightmare it was seeing my dogs try to kill each other. I didn't know my yorkie could be such a little demon.

They call them "terror terriers" for a reason, lol. But honestly any dog can become aggressive when another dog comes into it's territory. To your Yorkie's perspective your Rottie/Lab is an intruder. This has nothing to do with who's in charge but is based on fear. Your Yorkie is defending it's territory, he's not being a "demon" at all, just a normal dog. Things like not giving two dogs a proper and careful introduction, not properly socializing, and genetics can all play a part as well.

I would highly recommend separating them when you can be there to supervise. Feed them separately, and put away any high value items that could start a fight. Keeping a drag leash on your dog (one or both) can allow you to separate them more easily (do this when the stare down/growling starts and don't get made or yell just separate). Also keep a blanket handy, you can throw it over them in case of a fight which will often stop it long enough for you to remove one of the dogs.

If you have someone to help you do some parallel walking on neutral territory. While their separated do some scent swapping (like with blankets) and feed them on/near the blankets with the other dog's scent. Honestly though if the Rottie/Lab is going to only be there for a week it's a lot safer just to keep them apart.

I'd not bring your larger dog into the yorkies home straight away. That's a huge invasion of territory and, terriers being terriers, may snap. Perhaps when you bring the rottie mix, you can get someone to help you and just walk them for a bit. It'll drain their energy and show them that they mean no harm. It sorted my boy out real quick, just walking next to a dog they had previously barked at.

do you guys let your dogs bark or not? we let our dogs bark most
of the time to alert us, especially around the backyard/fence or if someone
pulls up in the driveway. as long as its not excessive and they stop when we tell them, its okay.

Yes and no.....they can bark to alert and for protection....but we try to tell them no after some barks.....most of the time they go silent on there own...or we try to tell them to be silent...but this is the word with twoTerrier ...most often it works then but not all the time...
