(if this is in the wrong forum i sincerely apologize, i had no idea where i'd post something like this)
this is something that's been on my mind for ages now but i've avoided asking it because it is literally such a dumb question, but i am so incredibly curious. if a person was to create and use 2 accounts on here, but if they were using both of the accounts completely legitimately, aka they weren't just mindlessly sending over pets from one of the accounts to the other, but genuinely just... properly collecting and trading pets on each of the accounts, would they still be banned or would this be fine since they literally wouldn't be breaking any rules?
clearly this is a super hypothetical situation, since no one would actually have a reason for doing this (that i can think of). but it's just been on my mind for a while now, and it pops back up every time there's an event such as easter and i see the little banner that tells you to not cheat lol.
obligatory disclaimer: no i do not have two accounts nor am i ever planning on doing something like this ^^'

i know right?? i mean i would assume it would be fine because they technically can't prove that it's the same person, and it could be treated as if it's two family members using the same device or something but like.. what if the person says "oh yeah both of these are my accounts"? it's literally such a dumb question but i can't get it out of my head hahaha

The rules are rules. Regardless of how legitimate the usage of the two accounts are, they’re still breaking the rules. I’d imagine that you’d be warned, and one account (possibly of your choice) be terminated.

I feel like it’d throw off the rarity balance.

this doesn't make much sense though? it's quite a paradoxical statement - if something's being done in a legitimate manner then it's inherently not breaking any rules. setting up an arbitrary rule that generalizes, without specific reasons for why something shouldn't be done makes no sense, however, the rule "You are not allowed to have more than one account for any reason." does actually further specify concrete reasons as to why one can't have multiple accounts. but then this begs the question of why specify when it has already been stated that "for any reasons" one can't have multiple accounts.
i don't want to make it seem like this is a pressing matter of any sorts, as it really is not, and i still feel that my original question was quite silly considering no one would actually do something like this because it really serves no purpose, but i think this still provides a fun discussion to be had.
i guess if one went down the semantics route, it could be said that regardless of it being multiple accounts that are used in a "legal" manner, it's still one person using them, so whatever pets/items they have on these two accounts, they are still in the possession of one person. thus, one could say they have a bigger pool of possible outcomes/trades spread over two accounts, compared to the average user with just one account.

The use of the second account is not legitimate; I believe the user who replied to you misspoke or simply meant that you weren't using the accounts to cheat. However, while there are obviously rules against cheating, as you have been shown there is a rule against simply owning/controlling more than one account as well so I hope that completely answers your question.

If you are asking "why" it is against the rules, I'd say because allowing it would invite all sorts arguments for those trying to cheat. "That trade wasn't unfair for normal players/I was just switching my December 18th pets/they only blocked my main so what do you mean I can't continue to contact that user/etc"
This would also make moderation far more difficult. Or, at least provide them an argument to make it so. "Yeah but I did that on my main, can't ban all my accounts they didn't do anything."
This also creates opportunities to harass users, or discourage/encourage those they interact with by pretending to be multiple people. This could sway contests, adoptables, raffles, and other trade decisions.
Basically, there are tons of ways it could be used for bad intent, and virtually no legitimate positive uses. Yes, theoretically you COULD do so in a way that would not cause harm, but it's not going to do good. Why invite tons of room for debate and loopholes when you can just make one solid rule. No extra accounts for any reason.

yeah i suppose i haven't looked at it from that angle. i was thinking of a completely ridiculous, hypothetical scenario where one would be using two accounts for no other purpose but to use them both as regular accounts (aka no unfair trades or just moving pets from one account to the other and whatnot). clearly, as i've stated before, one would have no applicable reasons as to why they'd do this in the first place, but i was curious as to whether it'd be acceptable considering it wouldn't be misuse of the system.
either way, thank you all for providing your feedback and humoring my silly little question! c:
