it's a 2015 (?) easter unicorn -- it has been up for about 12 hours now since i first logged on, still no more info dropped since then!

What the first few posters said is correct - we often have teaser news posts before the start of our bigger events. It's to give users a heads up, especially if you're someone who doesn't want to miss the very start of the event c:
Those posts don't actually reveal anything about the upcoming event, though - neither the pets nor (in the case of our summer events) the actual theme. The unicorn isn't a new pet, it's just a cute dress-up to say "hey, might wanna check the site at rollover* tomorrow!"

Events never start mid-day**, so if you're seeing a post like this but no links to the actual event, you can safely wait for the next day.
