A few moons before finding, and eventually joining, DawnClan, Stormwatcher (then known only as Storm) nearly lost his leg to a discarded piece of Twoleg trash.

Storm had been chasing a squirrel, when he noticed that the texture of the ground under his paws had changed. It felt cold, and harder than the leaves littering the rest of the forest floor. Curious, Storm sped up and tackled down the squirrel with a powerful leap. He finished his catch off with a bite, then looked down to study the strange material covering the ground... and found that his back left leg was stuck.

The tom tried to free himself, and, long story short, his leg ended up injured badly enough to leave terrible permanent scars. A day after the injury, Storm was found bleeding and exhausted under a thorn bush. It had taken all his energy just to drag himself to shelter. The cats who found him were a DawnClan patrol, and he was immediately rushed their medicine cat.

Once Storm had recovered enough to talk, he was invited to join DawnClan; Storm accepted, and he was renamed Stormwatcher. The name didn't seem to suit him very well, but Sparrowlight, the Clan's medicine cat, had recommended it, so Runningstar insisted that it be Storm's new name.

Ever since his injury, Stormwatcher has been very self-conscious about how he appears to others. When he sits or lies down, he's always careful to hide his injured leg as much as possible with his fluffy tail. He avoids the nursery and the Clan's kittens, for fear that he might scare the younger cats. He's also lost most of his self-confidence. Although Sparrowlight consistently insists that Stormwatcher's leg would work just fine if he tried exercising it a bit, Stormwatcher firmly believes that the leg is now useless. He's useless when it comes to hunting now, but it's more because he doesn't believe in himself than because he physically can't hunt.

Stormwatcher is very concerned that he could be kicked out of the Clan for being a "useless burden." To make up for it, he tries his best to work as an unofficial medicine cat apprentice. He's not very good at it, though, and tends to cause more problems rather than make things better. He has a tendency to mix the wrong herbs together, and almost poisoned a warrior once.

The tom's one talent that doesn't require the use of his injured leg is his ability to predict the weather. However, Stormwatcher grew up in a family where everyone was able to interpret the weather, so he assumes that everycat is able to do it, and doesn't consider the ability to be a talent.
