They say that you were born for a reason.
That we spend our lives through changing seasons.
I try and try to break this ever-changing mold.
Everyone around me puts my dreams on hold.

I try my best to make a stand.
But when I fall I have nowhere to land.
No one to catch me when I take my dive,
I need to gain the courage to fly.

I want to live my life my way,
Yet I can't stand getting through another day.
I work all day, I slave all night,
Just give me the freedom I want alright.

I cling to the dream that I hold near and dear
That I can be who I want without fear.
That a pathway will open before my eyes.
Telling me where to go inside.

The one thing I want most in this world?
I just want to be a girl.

I was a kid.
From our humble abode
I saw three cats sitting
Under our willow.

One of them, a gray,
The other, a tabby,
The third one's pelt
was as black as ebony.

One of them hissed
I can't say now which,
But it's sound hurt
My sensible ears.

"Listen here, Tristan."
I heard the gray one say,
"You should throw out
That noodle in the microwave."

I stared confused.
Why would it say that?
I froze and gasped suddenly
As I finally realized.

I went and opened
the microwave's door
And I saw what
the cat had warned me about:

A big snake sat lazily there,
Munching on a piece of cucumber.
Why it was there, I still don't know,
But one thing's for sure: It had to go.

As I reached for it,
At first, it just hissed.
But when my hand was almost there,
As fast as lightning, it moved towards my hand.

Just before it struck me,
Time seemed to slow.
Then i felt the paw
Of the black cat from the willow.

"Come with me now,"
The black cat meowed,
"Your work here is done,
Let's waste no more time."

Then and there I realized
Who that black was.
Then and there I realized:
This was my demise.

I looked back once more
To the snake, now frozen in time,
Fangs only millimeters away
From my hand, still extended towards it.

I took it away.
Said yes to the cat.
I let myself be
Lead away by Death.

A harsh noise I heard,
A deafening one.
I shielded my ears. I closed my eyes.
I suddenly found myself laying
Under something warm, on something fluffy.

The smell of fresh coffee hung in the air.
I thought I heard a radio in the distance.
"Where am I now?" I asked myself,
And slowly but eventually, my eyes were open.
"My bedroom. But how...?
Oh wait, I know now."

I sat up, looked around,
But soon I laid back down,
"It was all a dream."
To myself I whispered,
And reached for the alarm clock
To end my ears' torture.

This contest took me quite awhile to judge, but after some thought and help, I've decided who the winner should be! I loved how poetic this poem was, how it feels like it is the kalon narrating these questions about dreams and pondering over what they are and where they came from, the poem feels like it could lend itself well to further developing the kalon and their relationship with dreams and what the dreams mean to them. For this reason the winner is:
