Locustwing waited in their nest impatiently, slowly growing more anxious that his queen might have fallen prey to something out there. Or gotten hurt by one of the groups of rogue cats out there. After all, the pair had no more, in fact, less, claim to the lands than the cats who had grown up here to begin with.
Just as the tabby tom was about to head out to look for her, he heard a call from somewhere at the bottom of the tower. His warm paws hitting the cold floor was no less pleasant now than it was ever, but he rushed without a care, practically barrelling down the stairs in his hurry. When he got down to the bottom, he stared at a grey tabby first, confused. Was she the one he’d heard? It did sound like it had been Apolloswarm. He didn’t really have time to ask before he felt an excited molly nearly topple him, a smile on her face.
“See, it’s not that hard to find someone as long as you actually search.” She batted his ear. “So what did the ‘Ancestors’ tell you then? Eh?”
Locustwing decided to not mention anything of the actual experience. He didn’t even want to really remember it. The chill right down to the bones, the suffocating, yet quiet voices all around him before he had fled. It still made his fur bristle.
“They said they’ll send someone.” That was a lie, but he didn’t feel like having lost out on this one yet. But how else would he find a priest anyhow?
“Ahem.” The molly in front of the pair tried to catch their attention, staring at them with a bit of a confused look and a tilted head.
“Oh, right, right. This is- would you rather intro-” Apolloswarm began, only to be cut off.
“Yes. My name is Pickerel, it’s, uh, nice to meet you. Apolloswarm here asked me to join you...in here. She said there was food?”
“Right...Well, we do have food to offer you...Follow me.” Locustwing awkwardly nodded, gesturing with his tail as he started to make his way to the food stores where a few rodents were still left over after supper. Apolloswarm eagerly followed too, though Pickerel was the only one to eat once they’d gotten there.
“So, you’ve already met Apolloswarm, as for me, I’m Locustwing. The King here.”
“King?” The grey cat seemed to laugh at that through her mouthful of shrew.
“Yes. King. Me and Apolloswarm are mates and we’re in charge here.”
“Mhm. And if you’re gonna stay here you could use a name like ours. Pickerel would do fine for the first half, but what about...actually, wait, what are you good at?”
“Pardon?”
“You’ll need a job around here. We’ll explain everything later, but are you better at fighting or hunting, that should be enough for now.”
“Hunting. I’m not much of a fighter, really.”
Apolloswarm nodded, leaning in closer to her mate. “So, what do you think would fit a hunter?”
“Well, we don’t know much about her skills or anything...”
“Right, -fur, -pelt? Maybe?”
“We could save that for the cats without markings. She’s a tabby. -stripe?”
“I mean, sure. That works great. Thanks, dude.”
Locustwing rolled his eyes, leaving it to Apolloswarm to share with Pickerel their quick decision.
“Pickerel, should you choose to stay here and call these limestone walls home, you shall, from now on, be known as Pickerelstripe. How’s that sound.”
The molly smiled, nodding after swallowing down another mouthful.
“It sounds nice. Thanks. So, what’s all this stuff you said you’d explain anyway? Anything important.
“Oh, very, in fact.” Locustwing nodded. “We’ll show you to a den you could have first, though.”
The pair led their new subject of sorts to one of the large dens, with a couple of the soft, warm nests like in the tower. With the grey tabby getting settled in, the king and queen explained all they knew about the ways of this kingdom, taking turns. Pickerelstripe wasn’t sure if she quite understood all of it, but it was fascinating to hear nonetheless.
The next morning, Pickerelstripe would be sent out to hunt. Though with her being new to the castle, having lived out in the woods in the past, Apolloswarm had offered to help her get around and having there be two cats hunting, wouldn't be a bad thing. They could bring back more prey this way. "Apolloswarm, dear, you know I'm not letting you just leave me here alone." Locustwing purred as she got up to leave that morning, yawning as he followed after her. Having grown up alone for the most part, he didn't really mind the alone time, but...he was used to having her there since they became mates and he wouldn't have much to do alone that he wouldn't rather have her be there with him for. "Fine, fine. We can come. You're a better hunter than I am anyway- Hey, maybe you should be a hunter rather than a king." The molly laughed, skipping along, her paws hardly touching the cold stone beneath. Locustwing wished he was that full of energy, padding along, the fur on his back standing from the uncomfortable stinging cold on his warm pads. When the two got down to the bottom floor, they soon found the grey tabby, sitting and yawning near the exit, waiting for the cat that had promised to accompany her. When she saw them she meowed a greeting, standing up, ready to go already.
“Sorry if we kept you waiting!” Apologized Appolloswarm, smiling at the tabby while her mate mumbled a greeting back.
“I suppose we’re all ready to go then?” Locustwing asked, looking between the two mollies, both of whom nodded and with that they were on their way.
The single tom felt a bit hurt throughout, though, seeing the mollies chatting with one another whenever they took little breaks. At least he managed to bring back more prey than them, though, puffing out his chest and they were getting ready to return for Pickerelstripe and, more importantly, Apolloswarm seemed to be impressed.
To everyone’s surprise, when they got back to the castle they found a grey tom hanging around, looking quite bored. It seemed he had been awaiting their return, for he sat up and padded quite eagerly, albeit with a dignified trot, towards them upon spotting the group.
“Finally, I could have sworn I sat there for a moon. It’s nippy out here, you know.” The stranger bushed his fur, giving them an annoyed look. “So this is all there is to you lot, still? The ghosts promised much more.”
“Ghosts?” Pickerelstripe seemed confused, though Apolloswarm and Locustwing knew much better.
“So you’re...chosen? Like us?” That, however, didn’t mean Apolloswarm wasn’t surprised to find he made an appearance. She never did have particularly much faith in them, the only reason she’d come with Locustwing had been because he was trusting those dumb dreams religiously.
“I suppose you could say that. Yeah.” The grey tom shrugged, eyeing them as if expecting something else.
“Ah, yes yes, come in. What might your name be?” Locustwing smiled, happy to see someone else who seemed like he might share his beliefs. “We can go eat together and later I’ll show you the resting quarters.”
Locustwing spoke quickly, filling his jaws with as much prey as he could fit once more, eagerly leading the newcomer inside.
“The name I was given happens to be Irisspirit. I suppose it doesn’t quite matter what I was called by besides that. I trust you use your given names as well?”
“Of course, of course.” He mumbled, muffled by the fur in his mouth. -spirit, -spirit…a priest, right?
The queen and hunter followed him, Pickerelstripe in particular still awaiting answers as to what was going on.
