How many fish tanks do you have: 1
Types of fish that you have: Oranda Goldfish
Your fishs' names: Brainie Goldman

How long have you had fish: 1 day

Hello Everyone! My name is Emma and I am a new fish owner. I have never had a fish before in my life, and my roommate surprised me by getting me a fish for my upcoming birthday. He’s a little Oranda Goldfish and I was told he is about 1 month old. I have him in a ten-gallon tank for now since he is still a smol boy :) I’m really excited to have a fish. Any tips for a new fish owner?

Here’s a picture of him!

I'm more skilled with common goldfish and the like over fancy goldfish, but congrats on your first fish! He's really cute! I'd love to help you out if I can <3
He's going to need a bigger tank soon as goldfish need no less than 20 gallons to live a happy and healthy life. Despite what is said by some pet shop owners, goldfish are actually rather tricky to care for. They produce a lot of nitrites which leads to ammonia so it's best that they have a strong filter hooked up to their tank and that they are given frequent water changes to keep their water clean. I personally have 3 fluval 400s hooked up to my 60 gallon with an added bubble pump to add further oxygen circulation. For food, I'd advise flakes, or on occasion for a treat, fresh vegetables -like deshelled peas. Though for a cute little fancy goldfish like your own, pellets or food that sinks might be best to prevent swim bladder problems. Food with low protein is best as too much protein can create gunk and ammonia in the water. For water changes, I personally clean my tank once a week at a 25% water change to keep the water clean for my fish. I hope this helps! <3
I wish you the best with your new friend!

c: Awww he's really cute.
But like Evils said you'll need a bigger tank and beefy filtration for him at some point. And goldfish are social so he'd do best with a friend or two c:

My favourite goldfish are Ranchu. Just love how wiggly they are and their little chubby faces <3

And because I'm a dork I made a goldfish meme starring my lovely Molly. She just has the best face

StarryEmma, that's one adorable little bab <3
Pellets are a much better food than flake. Flake is problematic because it encourages air gulping which can cause swimbladder problems. A good sinking pellet, especially one catered to goldfish will do great. If you can get your hands on any goldfish gel food then that 100x better. I feed mine a mixture of pellets and gel :)

Thanks for the input guys! I will definitely look into getting a bigger tank for him in the near future. The only problem is that my housing only allows for 15 gal tanks, but I think I can get away with having a 20 gallon. I will also look into getting him a friend, I would hate for him to be lonely. For food, I currently have floating pellets. Are those okay? If not I can definitely scrap those and use different foods. And as for the filter, I am only using the 10-power filter that came with the tank itself, again I can upgrade that if necessary

@DemureGirl: That is actually a perfect meme.

@StarryEmma: Unfortunately if you can't get bigger tank than 20gal, which is the bare minimum for one fancy goldfish, I wouldn't recommend getting another goldfish as then you would need even bigger tank.

It has quite large catalog of plants and the search system is pretty good too when you want to narrow down what you are looking for.
I managed to identify the tiny mystery plant. It is very likely Didiplis diandra. :) Still not 100% of the other which I thought at first could be Myriophyllum mattogrossense, buuut now that it has been growing some more I'm very doubtful and even more after I googled it some more. I think it might be Proserpinaca palustris. Mine is not red like shown on that webpage though, but the emersed leaf shape matches that plant very well and even the submersed growth is pretty close match in shape.
If I'm correct with my identifications, then I'm pretty excited seeing that these aren't plants that I commonly come across in stores. :D

@DemureGirl the best meme!!!! haha!!! I seriously love orandas and ranchu's with those wens!! Here's my cranky face!!!

@StarryEmma Welcome to the goldfish world that is much more complex than people tell you!! One of the best intro sites I have found for goldfish is thegoldfistank.com
Fancies are amazing, but believe it or not, they get big!! Orandas are one of the biggest breeds, and get to be about 7-10 inches from their nose to pedunkle (base of the tail, not their fins) and with great care, even bigger!

Goldfish live a long time too! I hope you enjoy the world of fish keeping, even on the more difficult path, haha!!

Here's a helpful link for getting started!

so my cloudy water issue was from algae. I turned my tank lights on the other day and it was very green despite the water change I just did the day before.

I got a thing of algae fix and I used one dose of that and my tank is already more clear? Gonna do one more change tomorrow to see if I've finally got it at least a little bit under control. I enjoy actually seeing my fish and not a cloud.

I'm glad I found this thread!

How many fish tanks do you have: one!
for now, I'm happy with that! <3 ... perhaps some shrimp + aquatic snails in the future for planted-aquarium practise!
(i'm recovering over loss of my little telescope, Numnums former tank mate(his name was bob) but goldfish are social creatures,
so I'm probably going to get him a goldfish friend when I can afford a tank for both! )

Types of fish that you have: Goldfish! He's a comet!
Your fishs' names: he's called Numnums!
How long have you had fish: He's four years old! (planning on getting a much bigger planted aquarium for him!)
This is my first time really owning a goldfish (got him when he was under a year old), and there's so much to learn
that I'm just finding out now!! ... I got him when i was some-what young, so I didn't really pay attention that much?
But I'll definitely make up for that by spoiling him <3

(i have more images on my laptop haha...I can't wait to take more pictures of him when I get his new tank hopefully soon!)

EDIT : In the resource-website-link post on the first page, may I recommend linking to websites / tutorials helping out
with your first planted-aquarium? I'm pretty sure I'm prepared but some others may find a live-plant-tank daunting <3

Hey there!! Is the pictured fish the comet or a separate fish? From what I can see he looks like he was supposed to be a red cap oranda but never developed his wen! My other hint is that he has doubled fins, we call fancies double fins, and long bodies single tails! Super cute though!! And welcome!! I will warn you, planted aquariums with goldfish can be difficult. I've found certain plants to live longer than others through the nibbling though and would be happy to share resources on how I keep my delicious (in their eyes) plants safe!

I dunno if you're interested but thegoldfishtank.com is my favorite site to send people to when they are looking to better their care for their goldies! If you are looking to seriously care and learn more about them, there is a gorgeous book called Fancy Goldfish: A complete guide to care and collecting by Dr. Erik L. Johnson DVM and Richard E. Hess. I call that my goldfish bible and refer to it when ever I have a medical problem or need to reference something!! It's also just filled with beautiful pictures of all the Chinese and Japanese varieties!

Hello there!! I just realised that his body looks very short from the angle he's in! (aka, a red cap oranda!) Here's another picture of him : I'm pretty sure he's a comet, but I could be wrong !! .. always been an oddball to me, aha.
Image

And yea !! I've been watching a lot of videos, and research on what plants my goldfish will be less likely to munch on!! I won't mind too much, as it'll be a fun experience haha. (I want to get moss-balls just for him, aha.<3) - I'm going for a low-light planted aquarium for my first one!

and thank you so much for recommending that book!! I'll definitely get it when I can! I'm very enthusiastic with learning about our underwater friends, and providing them with the best care possible!! so thanks again!

can't wait to start posting here more often <33
