It had rained overnight, leaving the soil damp and muddy. Efath scratched behind his ear, taking a look around the grove of aspen trees he had discovered a few days ago. He knew this was the place. This was where he would create a home, and then a family, and then a warren. Sniffing the humid pre-summer air, he began to think about what he would need to do next. His ultimate goal seemed so far away and nearly unreachable. Think small, he told himself. You have to start small.

Looking behind him at his small shallow burrow, he knew that if any other hlessi ran into him and decided to join him, they would have nowhere to go. He needed to make this place look inviting. Turning, he returned to his small burrow. A nest of dry grasses he had gathered were trampled down and would only get in the way, so he dragged them out. He then began scratching at the edges of the hollow area, wondering which direction he should proceed in. This would be the burrow entrance now so he started digging straight back.

After a little while, he hit interference from the entwined roots of the aspen trees growing over his head. He huffed and sat back on his heels. This was a little trickier than he'd thought. When he left his previous warren, he had been so sure and confident that he could easily form a new warren of his own. He wished he had some others with him to help him think through the challenges, but he had convinced himself starting from scratch was the best plan. He studied the curve of the roots, noting that only certain sprigs went deeper than a few feet. He sniffed at the base of them and then dug down around them until he had created enough depth for another tunnel.

Hopping down into the hole he had made, he set out forward again. Over the next few days, he continued forward until he reached what he estimated to be the center of the grove. There, he started to travel outward. He widened the opening until a large area, held up by columns of thick roots, served as a mingling place for his future warren. He chose a solid looking area along its wall, toward the back side, and dug a small tunnel and then another smaller opening that would be his den. He created a few more of these in preparation, and hope, for other rabbits that may be living here with him soon.

He filled each den with soft grasses and ferns, and then emerged from below ground. The sun had set now. Fireflies blinked about and bobbed around his face. Summer was nearly here in full now, as it had taken him about half a moon-shift to create the beginnings of a wonderful burrow. He grazed nonchalantly in the open grass around the mouth of the burrow. The clovers tasted extra sweet after he had worked so hard, expending energy while digging. Once he had had his fill, he kicked some dirt around the burrow entrance to make it less noticeable to unwelcome passersby, and went inside to wait for his dreams to come true.
