Ooh! My first fish was a Betta too! Aside from learning about the nitrogen cycle, I’d say prepare some medicine for future uses. Since Betta have beautiful and fragile fins, they are prone to fin rot if the water upsets them. Get some medication for fin rot and maybe other medicines for ich or other diseases. Better be safe than sorry.

This is what my tank looks like after a 50% water change and the use of that water clarifier there. My mom grabbed it for me last night.

It’s getting more plants added in on Tuesday when I get paid. The whole right side is planted, the left is taken up by my crayfishes hide.

It might be worth putting carbon in your filter if it doesn't clear after that, or buy a UV filter

AHH! The little hiding female Betta looks just like one I used to have <3

The little Koi Betta is Goldeen! The black one is Shuppet and the blue and white one is Chinchou ❤️

The water today had cleared up some but isn’t like, crystal clear. But I can see my fish now 😂

I have a 5 gallon tank with a couple red eye tetras, my snail, and my male Betta, Lumineon c:

      First time Fish keeper:

Just a few questions! So, I am likely to get a 5-10 gallon tank and definitely a betta. I am considering shrimp as I really love them. I also really want a planted setup.

            - What items do I need to get? (In terms of food and other necessities.)

            - What kind of tank-mates work well with a Half-moon/Delta/Super-delta Betta?

            - Are all shrimp able to live with Betta's or are there certain types?

            - Do Betta's get lonely? (I know Males don't work well together, but should I get tank-mates?)

            - What are the best plants to use? (And do they require different substrates?)

            - What should I all-round avoid?

I won't consider tank-mates until a few months after getting the Betta unless it's a must and they do better with other fish.

- Betta pellets for food (not flakes - frozen bloodworms or daphnia make a good treat), a filter, heater, an aquarium siphon to sift dirt and poop from the gravel, a bucket or watering can to use for water changes, and water purifier. For the aquarium itself, I'd recommend live plants if you can, silk otherwise (plastic is sharp and can cut betta fins), gravel or sand (gravel is probably easier to clean), and some nice ornaments (make sure these are smooth too). Bettas like resting on things, so broad leafed plants like anubis and swords are good. Make sure there aren't any super small spaces they can get wedged in to, as some bettas will try to hide in things and get stuck.

- Anything peaceful and non-nippy is good - neon tetras are good in the fish department, while nerite snails and any of the small shrimp (I'd avoid amano and rock shrimp) should be good too.

- Some bettas like company, while some will kill anything you put in with them - you'll have to figure out your fish based on behaviour. If he seems very aggressive I wouldn't get any tank mates (I've heard people have had males who won't even tolerate snails), but I had a male who lived with a male guppy his entire life (it was originally a fry snack that he never caught) and they got along great. So yeah, I'd get something cheap like a snail or ghost shrimp first and see how he reacts. I don't think they get lonely per say, but some don't seem to mind the company.

- Java ferns are amazing! Very hardy, can grow rooted, floating, or in to driftwood, and great in all kinds of water temperatures. Swords and Anubises are good too. Talk to people at your fish store and ask for easy low-light plants and they should be able to help.

- Avoid buying a betta from a store that has sickly fish - even if the one you pick is good, you're promoting them to buy more bettas. Also avoid pimafix and melafix medications - they have a chemical in them that isn't good for betta's labyrinth organs.

--
Does anyone know any good micro invertebrates (or other non-fish) that'd be good for a very small tank? Setting up a densely planted 0.75 gallon micro and I really just want one thing in it I think. I'm setting up a 1.5 with it and that'll be shrimp and snails, so I'd just like this one to be something different.

I was looking at maybe a thai micro crab, but I don't know much about them so uncertain. I was also kind of hoping for a dwarf frog, but alas they get too big and need more space and groups so no-go on that too. I have a feeling I might end up having to just go with a shrimp or snail, but just wanted to see if anyone had other ideas!

-Betta food is probably easiest to get 'right' in terms of food. But if your store doesn't sell betta specific ones then preferably a small floating pellet that has good protein content and is not vegetable/algae based. Honestly flakes are fine imo, but they are not as good value as pellets. Siphon for water changes, bucket(s) for water change purpose (I prefer to have ones that are only in aquarium use), a net, algae scrape if you want but old credit cards and such work just as well and water tests I would highly recommend as well. And of course the filter, heater and light for the tank plus decorations for your taste.
Those should get you started. :)

-Generally small schooling/shoaling fish that aren't nippy. So quite many rasboras and tetras fit that bill, though among tetras there are some nippier species. Many barbs are too nippy in general. Endler live bearers seem to work too. Also species that live near the bottom are okay, but you have to be mindful of the temperature requirements of the different species. Like corrydoras for example, temperament vise would be great but most like the water bit cooler than bettas.
So basically anything that doesn't nip/harrass the betta or end up being attacked by being too flashy, and tolerates the temperature the betta requires. And isn't too tiny to end up being eaten by a betta. ^^; Buuut if you go for 5gal, I would not get any other fish than the betta. For 10gal you could maybe fit a small school of some small fish.

-Some bettas eat shrimp with passion, so it will mostly come down to the individual can you keep shrimp with a betta. I'm not a shrimp expert but I believe most of the commonly sold shrimps are okay with a betta.

-Nope, I don't think they really care about the company. My betta also had the problem that he's bit slow eater and kinda stalked the food before going for it, so the endlers kinda end up dominating at feeding time as they really just go for the food as soon as they notice it.

-Plants that are marked for beginners and to have low light requirements are usually the way to go. Anything red usually has more demanding requirements in terms of light (tiger lotus being exception), so I would avoid those. You might need to go through some trial and error with plants to find out which ones do the best in your tank. So I'd go into the store and pick two or three types and see how you do with those. There's also limit amount of space in the tank, so 2-3 should be good start and leaves space for the plants to spread out. Like with stem plants over time you can propagate them by cutting them down about half way after they've reached the surface and then just plant the cut piece.
Some plants to consider which are listed as easy ones:
-anubias species
-java fern
-bacopa species
-crypts (=cryptocoryne species)
-Hygrophila polysperma
-Hygrophila difformis
-Hygrophila corymbosa 'siamensis'
-Limnophila sessiliflora
-Vallisneria
-tiger lotus (surprisingly easy but flashy looking plant, can grow big though)

Anubias and java ferns don't need/like to be planted into substrate of any sort, instead they do well when tied or glued on piece of wood/rock or jammed into some nook. They will then eventually form roots that attach to the piece of hardscape. Anything else I mentioned needs to be planted into substrate of some sort. I would suggest coarse-ish sand, so that it's not really gravel but it's also not too fine, which has risk of getting clogged. Not saying you can't use gravel in a planted tank, but personally I think sand is easier to mainting if you end up with lot of plants.

-Getting a sick fish just because you feel bad for it is probably the number one thing to avoid when you are a beginner. Next is all those fancy sounding water additives that promise this and that. You really only need a good water conditioner/de-chlorinator to put in your water and that's it. Using carbon in the filter is also unnecessary 99% of the time, so if your filters comes with carbon just take it out and save it for the day you will actually need it.

    @hyde

I’ll share my experience for your question regarding tankmates for your Betta.
My male was extremely hostile. I’ve tried nerite snails, red cherry shrimps and ghost shrimps, all of which he tried to kill. So I’ve never placed anything with him since.
However, my female Betta does fine with tank mates. She’s in a big tank with quite a few other fishes and usually finds her own business. Doesn’t nip other fish and other fish doesn’t nip at her as well.

I don’t think I can answer any better than the two players above but I agree with both of them. ^^

On shrimp, a Betta is very likely to happily devour any ornamental shrimp (cardinia and neocardina).

Amano shrimp are probably the best to keep with a better. They really big enough the betta won't be able to fit it in its mouth and are quite hardy. My oldest one lived four years too so they can last a while.

Bamboo or vampire shrimp are also big enough to be housed with a Betta, however they require a bit more care due to their special feeding habits and Vampires have the sad habit sometimes dropping dead for seemingly no reason.

In general any fish that has a long colourful tail (like a guppy) is a bad idea for a Betta tankmate as it can be mistaken for another Betta.

They are pretty solitary fish anyway so they won't mind if there isn't another fish around. Though if you wanted another couple of fish I would recommend otos. They are small little bottom feeders and are absolutely adorable

Hey again everyone! I finally got my 10 gallon all up and running again with six beautiful black phantom tetra c: I was planning on going for tetra, but I couldn't decide which type until we actually got the petshop; they'd just restocked the tanks so there was a lot to choose from  I'll upload a few pictures soon c:

On another note i'm really happy with Pets at Home - they've finally implemented a system that tells you how big your tank needs to be for the fish you get and how to care for them etc. I was so surprised when the girl working there asked my if i'd cycled my tank etc, and then told someone they couldn't get a goldfish without at least 20g per fish because of how messy they are. I'm just really pleased fish aren't being as overlooked anymore!!
