Second Hunting - Jeremy, Bracken and Janet
What was considered the most useless hunting mission was given to the trio of rabbits well known throughout the warren: Jeremy, Bracken and Janet. It was within the first month of spring and the frost was still stubbornly sticking around. The air was bitter but milder than it was even in the last days of autumn but there was still the remnants of snow on the ground. The trio trudged onward, quite annoyed at Lilith-Rah’s suggestion that they do this and not someone else, they did plenty for the warren both in work and entertainment. They were looking forward to their peaceful day but no, here they were, out in the cold and wet clomping along on a useless endeavour. There was quite a bit of grumbling and complaining between them, though mostly about the weather rather than any specific rabbit back in the warren who may have been responsible for the decision.
The most enthusiastic of the three was Jeremy and was leading the way across the hillside, bounding ahead, eyes peeled for any patches of food and rather excited to be able to be outside after the long winter. The other two were less enthusiastic and hung behind a bit, Bracken was grumbling and moaning to Janet about the weather, the fact they were out there and how small his chamber was. Janet was mindlessly nodding along, lost in his own thoughts. Eventually, however, Bracken decided he wanted more interaction that Janet’s idle nods. He nudged the buck, “What’s up, Janet?” He asked, a friendly smile on his face.
Janet barely paid attention, “Oh, nothing..” His response drifted off as he continued walking. Bracken was a little agitated, wondering what Jeremy could even see in this buck? The previous conversations on the subject still didn’t clear all the ideas from his mind, he still thought that Jeremy could be his mate and he was more than a little annoyed by his response. “Are you just going to drift off into your own little world then?” Bracken huffed. Janet nodded in the same mindless way he had in the past and sped up slightly to catch up to Jeremy. Bracken grew even more frustrated and huffed once again, “Fine, suit yourself.” This was accompanied by a carelessness in his step that made him catch Janet’s tail. He did not apologise and didn’t plan to. Janet spun round, suddenly extremely frustrated with the other buck. “What is your problem Bracken? Still hurting over Jeremy turning you down? Get over it,” Janet snapped, he regretted what he said almost immediately. It was rude and even Bracken didn’t deserve it.
Bracken whacked Janet in the face with a paw. “Shut up hutchie,” he grumped. Bracken did not really mean to offend Janet, but Janet took offense anyway. The other buck leaped onto Bracken and started whacking him from where he stood on top of him. Bracken didn’t let this continue for very long and twisted round, allowing himself to clonk Janet right in the face. The fight continued, not really escalating to bites and real wounds but the punches and kicks were getting a bit vicious. Jeremy had seen the fight and, unsure what to do, she did the first thing that came to her mind. She cried. A strange, wailing cry that completely distracted the two bucks mid fight. They looked at each other rather sheepishly. “S-sorry, Jeremy… I guess we should get one with finding some new food patches for the spring…” Bracken mumbled, Janet nodding in agreement. With one last sniffle, Jeremy bounded onward, the three of them completely silent.
