so I really want to get into the furry fandom and I hope to make a fursona but-
I don't really know where to start? Does anyone have any advice on becoming a furry and basic rules? Thank you so much! I look forward to making some new friends

Hello, Nevy! :3 All you need to be a furry is a love of anthropomorphic animals. Which you already appear to have, so you're good to go. There really isn't much in the way of rules other than the obvious ; no art/design/character theft. Some species associated with the furry community (like Dutch Angel Dragons, Wickerbeasts, or Manokits) have more rules. Another great site for a furry is Furvilla! (It's a pet site, but it's geared toward furries, even has fursuit and convention chat sections!)
Honestly, you can make your fursona whatever you want. You don't even need a fursona if you don't want one. Usually fursonas are characters that represent you. They don't have to represent you entirely ; they can be an idealized version, or they can draw inspiration from you as a person. You can even have multiples!
Making a fursona is simple. (I'll use Melti, my fursona, as an example) Take either a species you are similar too or a species you really like (I love Spyro, so I made her a dragon.), choose some of your favorite colors (Red and purple are my favorites, but they don't go together so I just went with purple.), and design a character. You can see mine in my signature.
If you ever want to chat, or have more question, feel free to PM me or DM me on Discord! (MeltiTheDragon#0895)
I agree that making a fursona is a solid way to make yourself feel apart of the furry community. I don’t really have one *wheeze* I change a lot and am very indecisive. I mostly make characters with traits similar to mine at the time and together they make a me lol. Again pick a species that you like and I always google colour palettes to help me with colouring. Palettes can have images to help you. Don’t be afraid to make up a species (or mix) or use something simple like a puppy!
Example:

At the time I really liked angel dragons so I applied it to some bases to come up with the design and then added my own personal touches.

Some of these personal touches include glasses (I have glasses X3), horn pattern and placement. Colours different than my palette (only slightly) and omg a gorgeous tail. I’m so proud of that detail because I decided to be angsty and not have a normal tail. I then experimented and got what you see today! A large floofy feather along with two long and two short ones. Unfortunately these colours are expensive to get in faux fur and angel dragons aren’t my favourite to sculpt :\
Small things like this can add tons of character! Some ideas to think about for your character or sona are
•freckles
•glasses
•hair (I don’t do this for some reason...)
•birthmarks
•ear/nose design (my new suit is having a swirled nose)
•claws
•big ears! Add cuteness
But overall I’d say find maybe a base online of an animal you like, a palette you adore, and come up with a design with a base. Then draw or commission your own art not using the base and add personal touches.
I also love PMs so shoot me one if you want. Anyone honestly <3 also in case anyone is wondering my angel dragons name is Buttercup. That seriously was almost my name XD so it’s a personal story that connects me to this character even more.
Sorry for the long post guys. So I want to have a prop to go with my husky suit. It’s not done or even close but if anyone has any ideas let me know. I want to base it off something like on how I named them. They’re an Inuit- whom typically live in northern Canada, Alaska, and Greenland. I want to base my prop off of the culture. To sum it up...
Well
Disney’s “Brother Bear”
I looked it up and it is centered around the Inuit culture and people. Of course I’m not doing this to offend people at all. I love this type of culture and I love the Canadian, Alaskan area. Nanook (or Nanuk) is actually a polar bear believed to control the success of hunting polar bears. From what I’ve seen, the Inuit people believe that everything -everything- has a soul. I love learning about this stuff because it’s very interesting to think about, and I really want to apply any of these things to my suit!
Again if anyone has any fun ideas, no matter how insane, for me to make. You don’t have to quote me either this is loooooong- so just @disrep me
