labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, german shepherds, belgian shepherds (groenendael, laekenois, tervuren, malinois), borzoi, yorkshire terriers, beagles, and pembroke welsh corgis are the most common dogs found in the city haunters kennel.

personalities:

the dogs found in the city haunters kennel are commonly very untrustworthy but loyal. all dogs that join this kennel are former softies, which is what the kennel calls dogs owned by humans. they start out being very skittish but the longer they are with the kennel, the more loyal they become as it is their nature as they were formerly pets. they don't trust humans, which is why they avoid them at all costs. they are quite welcome, as they find safety in numbers.

territory:

the kennel resides in an abandoned large city. the buildings are crumbling and overrun by plants. no dog truly knows why the city was abandoned, but its next to an even bigger city, separated by a large barbwire fence. holes are found all through the fence and abandoned dogs tend to crawl through and try to find sanctuary in the old city.

religion:

when the founder originally left his humans, he meets one of the five rulers of the skies. the five rulers of the skies are:

• anais ;; female ;; labrador retriever ;; health
• cheval ;; male ;; beagle ;; mischief
• axelle ;; female ;; pembroke welsh corgi ;; kindness

these five dogs all work together to rule the large pack of dogs in the skies. they are a council, and as soon as the founder meets them, he believes in them. he meets ellard first, who tells him all about the five rulers. ellard is the ruler of knowledge, very wise and the oldest of the five. anais is the ruler of health, she is the one who mostly talks to the adagio and helps him/her when he/she is unsure of how to heal someone. cheval, the youngest, is the ruler of mischief, and likes to cause mayhem, which is why the four others keep a close eye on him. axelle is the ruler of kindness, she makes sure the others don't get into fights and keeps an eye out for anger in the dogs of the city haunters. if she sees anger, she tells the solo, making sure that the solo knows what it going on. tavin is the ruler of war, and works closely with axelle. he sees the anger in outsiders and tells the solo when he needs to attack or lets axelle tell him when he needs to be peaceful.

(( ✏︎ "out! out! shoo!" cried the human as a black belgian tervuren raced after a beautiful brown and white borzoi. the human threw a pan out the door as the dogs fled in fear, their owner angry at them for a reason they did not understand. they raced to the edge of the city, to the large fence, and slipped through a hole and into the old city. the crumbling buildings all around them seemed terrifying, so they walked slowly into the one in the best condition. they found a door standing wide open, so they padded up the stairs and found themselves on a roof. "seems like this is where we'll be staying, curly," the belgian tervuren woofed softly to the borzoi as he curled up next her, their pelts barely touching.

the male opened his eyes to a starry white german shepherd. "my name is ellard. i am a ruler the skies, and i have seen you and your mate are in trouble," the dog said, and oliver, the belgian tervuren, ducked his head in embarrassment. "sh-she's not m-my m-mate!" he stammered, but ellard ignored him. "there are four other rulers of the skies. i, ellard, am the ruler of knowledge. anais is a labrador retriever and she is the ruler of health. cheval is a beagle and is the ruler of mischief. axelle is a pembroke welsh corgi and is the ruler of kindness. tavin is a belgian malinois and is the ruler of war. you shall be a protector of dogs who were left by their humans. they will find you, i will make sure of that. they will become the lowest ranking dog of the pack until a new dog joins you. they will keep their softie names until they are welcomed as full members of the kennel. i will send you the names i have deemed fit for them. whenever you need to speak with me, just come to the roof and howl. i shall hear you. now, go and start your new lives. you shall be audrick, and she shall be galina." ellard woofed all this before turning away and then the newly named audrick woke.

"i was visited last night by a ruler named ellard. i am now audrick, and you are galina. i have thought of names of ranks. i will lead, by the title of solo, and you will be one of my two seconds, by the title of chord. now, i will patrol, and you shall hunt," audrick announced to galina as they walked down the stairs and towards the wide world of the old city.

the day passed, and audrick left galina to sleep on the main floor of the building where it was warm. he stepped out onto the roof and threw his head back and howled. "oh ellard! please send a loyal dog my way! i need a set of able paws to become my first member of the ensemble!" his breath puffed from his jaws and nostrils in visible clouds, the cold starting to make audrick forget his hatred of his long coat. ))

xxxxxx★ the kennel does not starve.
• almas does well with the rest and is ready to rejoin the patrols. whereas philippe, with his dislocated shoulder, will need another moon of rest to ensure he heals properly.
• while patrolling, erinat & vasilios come across nothing of importance.

⟶ as the pair began their return back home, with an unsuccessful patrol of the sorts, they bump into anastasia & ursus.
• ryota, cadmus, nevada, yamya, & kee return with a small bird & a stoat from their hunt.

⟶ as nevada separated from the others to scout out the area for prey, she came across keats all on his own.


002. 𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑭𝑨𝑳𝑳𝑬𝑵 𝑬𝑴𝑷𝑰𝑹𝑬

xxxxxx★ the kennel does not starve──you have two more moons of fasting.
• demi, shawsta, & caesar return with a chicken and a mouse from their hunt.

⟶ as the trio trudged along, grasping their prey between clamped jaws, they bumped into cerbus rather suddenly.
• while patrolling, shawsta & caesar come across nothing of importance.

⟶ on their way back to camp, however, they find cash; an intruder!


003. 𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑰𝑽𝒀 𝑺𝑪𝑶𝑼𝑻𝑺

xxxxxx★ the kennel does not starve.
• kalta, natiri, & laila return with two rabbits from their hunt. they find nothing else on their way back to camp.
• garland, candie, brutus, & truskett encounter an angered badger whilst on their patrol! though no one is injured, the dogs were worn after having chased the damned thing off of their territory.
• chi gathers x1 rush while on his herb-gathering expedition.

⟶ while sniffing through the underbrush, searching for herbs to harvest and bring back to camp, a growling coming from behind startles the healer. not recognizing the scent nor the voice, he darts off toward camp, where all of the others remain. the aggressive rogues trails him the entire way, snapping at the back of his heels. as he reaches the camp, the others leap in to defend him, chasing the rogue off of the territory. the alpha, garland, gathers and concludes that the borders must be strengthened and patrolled more often due to the increase of trespassers these last few moons. had this unwelcome rogue been affiliated with the infamous rose grass group?
• ulysses & minerva are unable to track the scent-trail of nova any longer, though they do find another scent that is unknown to them. since it was getting dark, they return to camp to discuss their finds with the alpha and determine their next take of action.
• bandit and nova successfully learn the tracking skill!
• niko is well rested and ready to rejoin the patrols.

iiindentdemeter laid motionlessly among the secluded hollow, gazing out into the summer’s warm rain. her eyes were unmoving, focused intently on the blank space. she was relaxing, at least as much as she could, while her stomach churned with the whelps inside───but there was something else that unnerved her, even the thought causing a furious growl to rise in her throat. her beloved mate, hektor, had yet to come and visit her all throughout her moons of pregnancy, where she was left to nurture herself and her health with the occasional visit of the priestess. where was he? she wondered. had he forgotten all about her? had the mere thought of her left his mind? after all, she was to be the mother of his pups, and he sure as hell was not going to abandon her with their own young as he tramped around with other females.

iiindentthen again, their bonding was not something they’d truly welcomed. their relationship was forced, and their young just the same. though it was a circumstance that demeter had accepted, she understood the hardships that would come when forcing two dogs together. there was no such thing as “love” between a pair that had never once met each other before, and now were to be wedded and raising their own family. nevertheless, it was the females’ obligation to the empire to supply it with the future generation of strong, resilient soldiers───and it was hektor’s own obligation as well. if he didn’t comply, why, he’d be defying the word of mikhail himself! would he dare do so?

iiindentat this point, the cane corso had a sliver of doubt that he wouldn’t dare do such a thing. hektor was also new to the greaven empire, joining from a disbanded kennel far-off in the world that surely didn’t have the same standards of this one. but even so, demeter was his mate, and she was carrying his offspring, whether their assignment or not. any brute in the right state of mind would never abandon a female with his own whelps inside of her. this was when she had had enough of it───and while staring into the black abyss of the wells, she knew she’d risk even her pregnancy to slip out from the den and find this bastard. she’d kill him if she found him, surely she would.

iiindentas the female rose, heaving onto her four paws, she imagined herself grasping the white-pelted male from the throat and shaking him limp, like a weakling. she envisioned ripping his pelt to shreds then basking in victory over his mangled body. what a lesson that would teach the brute! maybe he’d learn, maybe he’d beg for mercy at her paws! but these were silly thoughts, demeter knew───with her stomach heavy and drooping low, hindering her mobility, she wouldn’t come close to being able to do such a thing. hektor would be the one to kill her, he’d be the one basking in her blood. the female shuddered at these thoughts though kept herself moving, slinking from the den and waddling along the stone walkways. the warm, summer rain dribbled onto her pelt and rolled down the sides of her rotund belly, swaying to-and-fro at her trotting gait. be careful, she reminded herself. don’t you dare slip.

iiindentwith her eyes scanning the area, narrowed sharply like an eagle’s, she found that of a white-pelt and pushed on. they had sleek fur, close to the skin, and completely white, like a cloud-covered sky. this had to be hektor, it had to be. but as she neared, she realized it wasn’t him at all───no, it was nikias. though very similar in appearance to that of hektor, his face was different, unrecognizable, and his legs slightly shorter. demeter let out a huff of disappointment, but pressed on. she decided to scale down the pathway, slowly, and make it to the ground, where she continued to search every space among the wells that she could think of.

iiindentsuddenly, the tan-colored fur of a kangal came rounding around a bend, spotting demeter in her state and making her way toward her. damnit. “demeter? what are you doing out here───look at you!” tasoula called, coming to face her with a confused expression. “it isn’t safe for you to be wandering around here,” the female continued, voice low as she eyed the area around them. “i want you and your brood safe.”

iiindent“i’m fine, tasoula.” demeter huffed, though managing a smile through the rain. “just taking a stroll, is all. your legs begin to ache lying up there all day and night… it isn’t pleasant.” the kangal relaxed her worried gaze, letting out a small chuckle. she then stepped closer and nuzzled her nose into the cane corso’s stomach, licking the fur gently.

iiindent“i’ve always wanted more pups.” she sighed gently. “but ever since damiskos’ injury, he’s refused to even consider trying. i feel as though he isn’t obligated to the word of mikhail, and it angers me.”

iiindent“at least he visits you.” demeter scoffed, disappointment flashing in her eyes. “i haven’t seen a thing of hektor, not even a word.” tasoula shook her head, backing away slightly to join her side.

iiindent“brutes they are, aye. they have no sense of duty, of care or intention.” the kangal looked over intently into demeter’s eyes. “is that why you’re down here?” she inquired.

iiindentdemeter nodded hesitantly. “aye.” she breathed, never tearing her gaze from the kangal. tasoula then sighed, remorse looming in her expression. it was clear she understood the situation demeter was in, and this she was glad of. “then i’ll help you find him───and when we do, we’ll rip his pelt to shreds.”

iiindentwith a smirk overcoming the corsos’ expression, the females rose onto their paws and began to wander the wells, silent beside the pattering of rain around them. tasoula was focused as she searched, just as so as demeter was. she was relieved to have just a bit of help as they searched for hektor in the rain───but what she was most thankful for was her companionship. those few moons of remaining concealed in the mother’s den, alone, was a grueling experience. there was little to do beside watch the outside world and nibble on what food the squires brought to her. she’d likely consider asking tasoula to visit her in her free-time from now on, just so that she wasn’t so lonely and left to wither into insanity. and maybe, the day tasoula found herself pregnant, she’d do just the same for her.

iiindent“there.” tasoula suddenly exclaimed, pointing with her nose in the direction of what looked to be a few dogs gathered together near the pit───but there, toward the outside of the group, was a white-pelted form of a dog. demeter narrowed her eyes. “come with me, tasoula… just in case.” the kangal nodded silently and took position behind the female as she trotted her way toward the group, her drooping stomach swaying back and forth. it was as they neared that a few of the dogs took notice, mocking smirks taking form on their maw.

iiindent“lookie here! who are they?” a brute piped-up from the others. demeter ignored their words and continued her way, now a tails-length from her mate. hektor turned from the group and faced the female head-on, surprise taking his expression. “demeter.” he murmured.

iiindentbut before the brute could utter another word, the corso raised a paw and cuffed his face, causing him to stumble on the verge of falling. the brutes within the group rose in quiet chuckling and murmuring. “when you joined the greaven empire,” she began, voice unwavering and stern. “you signed an obligation to mikhail───and when we were mated, you signed an obligation to me. you’ve broken that obligation, and frankly i wouldn’t mind telling the sovereign that.”

iiindenthektor looked her head-on, expression hard with anger. “dare you threaten me in your condition, demeter. you do know i could kill you in instant, right?” his growls silenced the rest of the brutes as they listened in on their exchange. the female paid no mind to his threats, stepping forward to push herself closer to him, glaring into his deep-brown eyes. “then i’ll set the gods on you and send you tumbling into the pits while everyone watches your body burn to but a mere speck of dust. do you want that, hektor? do you want to go down in history as the soldier killed by his pregnant wife?” the dogo argentino softened his gaze slightly, seemingly stepping back and away from the pit that laid behind them───and that was when he complied, not even saying a word.

iiindent“i don’t want this just as much as you don’t,” she started through gritted teeth. “but i, we, have an obligation. if you break your promise, then you’ll suffer the consequences.” finally, as she finished her statement, she turned sharply on her heel and padded away from the dumbfounded brute. it remained that way, silent, until demeter and tasoula disappeared around the corner and into the wells.
