At the moment I'm not quite sure ;v; At first I was thinking of how much time they have left on Earth but I feel that it limits a lot of storytelling.

Maybe they're working dogs for humans? They keep track of time for whatever purpose the humans (or themselves) need to keep track of -- for example: How long until a significant other is supposed to return home, or simple tasks like how long until you need to feed the livestock.
