PART ONE

a deity. arevik was born an immortal deity, a minor goddess who was able to easily withstand harsh and bitter temperatures, a power inherited from her father. but deities were suppose to be regal, proud and strong, no? the kings, queens, princes and princess of the skies, thought to be praised and worshiped. but there was something her mother wanted to hide to badly from her, something that kept her mother silent about most things. there were things her mother simply refused to tell her about, and arevik was often left with questions that she could never end up getting the answer to.

her mother was a strange soul, and often considered to be a mere mortal of sorts. her ways of raising arevik were odd and mysterious, and arevik forced herself to follow all of her rules or else something troubling may be laid upon her. one of the first things arevik's mother had taught her was to never smile. a grin, and giggle, a laugh. in her mother's eyes, those were signs of vulnerability and weakness, and the outcome of a smirk was a terrible consequence. arevik was young, after all, and had believed her.

arevik lived fine (besides the odd rules her mother had shoved in front of her) for most of her childhood until she overheard something being discussed, her very own parents included. though arevik wasn't allowed to butt into any private meetings her parents held, she couldn't help but eavesdrop on a few when she was done the tasks her mother set her to do for the day. but this one particular meeting appeared to have more thought and effort in closing off the doors and windows to, so a measly child like arevik was unable to hear their deliberations. it could've been perhaps they had spotted arevik trying to listen in on their secretive meetings, but she didn't quite think so. her mother would've punished her a long while ago, and arevik, right now, was doing just fine.

the meeting started off normal. there were muffled greetings, the sound of pouring drinks and the occasional witty remark. arevik sat at one of the shadier walls of the building, nibbling on a small cupcake a lovely goddess had given her while she was off doing her tasks. arevik hummed softly, feeling the unusually fluffy grass around her. then she dropped her cupcake, and her heart stopped. she had heard something she wasn't suppose to. something gruesome, something disastrous and frightening. coming out of her mother's own mouth as well.

    "sacrifice arevik."

PART TWO

arevik froze, her limbs trembling. oh, no, no, no. she had faintly heard of sacrificing, and it was done every decade. a tradition formed from after a major war broke out between the bright and dark deities back then. the war have ended roughly, but peace was brought upon the land as long as a younger deity was given to a mythical being named chayyim as a token of appreciation for giving harmony to the skies. but no -- arevik never expected it'd be her. she had done so much to please her mother! to make her entire family approve of her! and now what are they doing? they're --

"making you a meal for a being that may not even exist." arevik froze once more, but in a stiff movement, she turned her head around. "i'm ameile." her voice was gentle and soft, and rather calming. arevik felt odd standing next to her -- they contrasted each other, like the sun and moon. though she seemed like someone she could safely befriend. "i -- lost my older cousin before to that dumb tradition. it's horrible, and quite useless, actually. you overhead them talking too, right? from what i can grasp, your name is arevik."

arevik nodded, still wide eyed and horrified. she considered shaking ameile's hand as a friendly gesture, but gosh, her palms were sweating like crazy. "please -- do you know a way out? i... don't want to die. please, i.. i'm able to w..withstand harsh temperatures! i can go about anywhere. i just want to leave." she choked and tripped on her own words, and ameile's eyes suddenly became as big as arevik's.

"run." ameile shouted, and she bolted away. arevik's fight or flight instincts stopped, and simply stood there. a shadow loomed over her, and arevik had assumed it was someone from the meeting. the shadow was every so familiar, and let off a devastating vibe. she knew quite clearly who was standing above her, judging everything from the way she overheard her words to the way she breathed.

"mother." arevik hissed, clenching her fist. without turning around, she added, "funny seeing you here. it's not like you can be mad or anything, because i'm going to die in a weeks time anyways, under your fantastic parenting." arevik spotted the blurry figure of ameile in the distance, urging her to make a run for it. but she stayed put. if there was anything she learned from the oddities of her mother's parenting, it was that she grew up having a silver tongue.

"i dare you to run away from my grasp, arevik." her mother walked in front of her, giving her a dreadful laugh, breaking her own rules of parenting. dumb enough. "you'll always be under my control, isn't that right? you'll bow down to me until you save our skies from being broken once more. you're a fool." her mother spat mockingly, and arevik bit her lip. arevik tried to move her legs in attempt to confront her mother, but they were stiff. she couldn't move.

"who's helping you out? you don't have the power to stop my movement. only--" arevik cut herself off. only her dad did. after all these years, her parents raised her to simply be a sacrifice. "your parenting is absolutely stellar, i couldn't have asked for better parents." arevik grumbled, and ameile, in the distance still, frowned, with a shake of her head.

"tch, you ungrateful mole. see how you like it when your actions fade into consequences for you. too bad you won't be able to see what happens." her mother roughly grabbed arevik, only to snap on a shimmering gold cuff on her leg. it was heavy, it was unbreakable. worst yet --

    it made her blind.

PART THREE

"take her away." her mother snapped. the world had turned into nothing but a dazed and blurred vision, almost like she was put into a slumber. it wasn't suppose to end like this. no, she was suppose to grow up and enjoy her life. no, this wasn't going to happen. no, it wasn't going to end like this. this would not be here last moments in life.

    "I'M NOT GOING TO DIE."

arevik snapped. her father's spell seemed to have worn off, and she was making a run for it. she couldn't see, but she knew ameile would help it out. and she did. ameile grabbed her hand and sprinted off. arevik didn't quite know what was going on as ameile was leading the way, and arevik put her entire life in the hands of someone she met just today. but ameile was her last resort, and she couldn't give up. no, that'd be pathetic.

the cuff was tricky to deal with, but her adrenaline kept her going. her legs were sore, and she wanted to stop. but she needed to go on ahead, or her fate would be worse. she would have no fate.

ameile was struggling as well, from what arevik could tell without her vision. she was panting, and was complaining under her breath. she didn't quite know why ameile would bother help her, but if she was complaining herself? definitely not. ameile had attempted to slow down to arevik's pace, but if they stopped they might as well both be sacrificed.

arevik didn't understand anything, really. her own mother and father decided to give her arevik's presence for what seemed to them like peace, but for all she knew, that peace could be a fabrication of someone's storytelling. a tale made up into a tradition, one where ameile lost her own cousin to. arevik felt sick, but even a slight delay in their pace would set them steps closer to arevik's mother, who had created the cuff on arevik that made her unable to see.

there seemed to be guards and knights, too. rushing after them was a whole group of people trying to tear arevik away from her life, thrown into the empty depths of the mouth of a mythical creature, which none of them had presumably even seen before. they refused to take the risk of not sacrificing anyone, but that led the an immense amount of unnecessary bloodshed.

arevik and ameile suddenly stopped, and ameile had to catch her breath. "y..y'know how you can withstand harsh temp.. temperatures?" ameile huffed in between heavy breaths, and arevik nodded swiftly. "how about if i had to throw you into the tundra?"

the tundra. cold, freezing, and almost lifeless. "is -- is it the only place i can go? i mean, i'm able to, but it's awfully bare." arevik questioned in a quivering voice.

"the safest. there's an abandoned ice temple i can send you to, and it's you that can withstand bitter and cold environments, right? can your parents?" ameile replied in a hurried tone. arevik shook her head. "good. i'll send you off there then. you may need to build shelter there, and i'll try to join you after i sneak past everyone and throw on something warm. there's a portal that's near us right now, and once you step in i can close it off."

arevik had agreed to the plan, and before she knew it she was at the foot of the portal. "see you there." arevik murmured softly. she stepped in, falling into what seemed like the abyss.

where she hoped she would be safe.

PART FOUR

she said she would come. she said she'd meet me here.

arevik was laying in her makeshift bed in the ice temple. it had been an entire day of safety, but an entire day of loneliness here, but ameile never came. in the meanwhile, arevik forced herself to get used to being blind. to be unable to see everything around her, and unfortunately having to deal with several bruises from bumping into everything in the temple. many things had seemed to be made out of ice, which ended up with her skidding across the temple with a twisted ankle.

days had slowly went by, and arevik had met an awfully nice ermine which had kept her company through the empty feeling in her stomach, one where she felt lonely and abandoned. ameile still didn't end up showing up, and half of her being thought she was dead. maybe arevik led her to be the one that was sacrificed. the one that was fed to the mythical chayyim, a being that might even be dead as well.

the gold cuff she had was certainly scratched up. she had tried breaking it, and her ermine friend even tried to assist her as well, almost knowing how much agony it cause arevik. but it didn't come off. it was almost unbreakable, but there must be a way. if it can go on, there's a way it could get off, certainly? arevik, possibly, just didn't know how. maybe she didn't have to use physical force, but maybe something else? a reserve spell of sorts? arevik just had to find out.

    there was a sudden knock.

arevik hoped ever so badly it was ameile. but the chances of ameile showing up were so impossibly slim, there was a better chance of the tundra becoming as humid as a rainforest tomorrow than ameile greeting arevik once more. in fact, it could be her mother. maybe she had been found. but arevik didn't quite know what she was living for anymore? her ermine friend? mostly. be might as well turn herself in while she can. grumbling quietly, arevik begrudgingly sauntered up to the temple's small door, almost hitting her knee against the wall as she opened it.

"are you arevik, by any chance? ameile had told me to meet you here." a voice arevik didn't recognize came from the door, and arevik raised an eyebrow. "i'm caoimhe, nice to meet ya. gosh, is it any colder inside? i'm freezing my fingers off out here! even with this coat, i'm waaaay too cold for this."

her bright attitude had caught arevik offguard, but she nodded. "yes i am. and to be fair, i'm not too sure. did ameile possibly happen to speak to you about my power to be able to withstand the cold?" arevik replied. caoimhe seemed trustworthy enough, and the mention of ameile's name made her almost smile. arevik couldn't smile in front of this stranger. that was too dangerous.

"ooh, gotcha!" caoimhe laughed, and arevik winced. how could she be this happy? what was it that was keeping her mood at bay? "do you posssssibly have the power for warmth, as well? i'll do whatever! you look lonely, i can be your friend!" they let out another quick laugh, and arevik forced herself not to mirror her awfully contagious laugh.

but a friend? ... no one had offered friendship to her before. arevik couldn't help it. she was suffering from loneliness, and she had the chance of making a friend.

    she smiled.

she hated herself for a moment for letting a grin slip. but it felt so pleasant -- she felt happy. arevik finally felt a sense of joy, and nothing but a delight radiated from caoimhe. something about her reminded arevik of a life she could've had once, but had to give up under her mother's commands. but instead of being fed to a dragon, she was here, smiling at someone she just met.

caoimhe reached out to shake hands with arevik, and arevik heard a loud rattle.

    her gold cuff came off!

some odd feeling of glee and friendship had ultimately made the cuff break off, and both arevik and caoimhe were surprised. arevik could see! arevik could see caoimhe's toothy grin. she could see her ermine buddy's adorable face, and the snow that fell from the sky. the outside was so dearly gorgeous, arevik could help but step outside and let the snowflakes get tangled in her hair. caoimhe snickered, but joined arevik in on admiring the outside world.

arevik was no longer a puppet on strings, being controlled by her mother. she and her newfound friend, caoimhe, were out enjoying the snow and admiring the icy landscape of the tundra (with caoimhe's complaints, too). giggles and ridiculous puns from caoimhe filled the air, and arevik couldn't help but smile at every sentence caoimhe spoke. she could do what she wanted now, and build her own personality and lifestyle.

      finally.

        finally, she was free.
