Birb wrote:Hiya! I already have most things decided for if/when I purchase my suit; I'm just looking for some tips on how to actually save up the money for it.
I found a wonderful custom partial maker on Etsy who charges a base of approximately $600 USD for a "full" partial (head, handpaws, feetpaws, tail, arm sleeves) plus a little extra for additional fur colors, additional accessories, etc. — but notably, not extra for any particular species or pattern complexity. I really love their style, so as long as their shop stays up, I really do have my heart on them.
I don't have a job due to being a disabled minor, but I do receive a sizable monthly allowance from my divorced dad on my own debit card. Already about $30 a month is taken away for an Adobe CC plan + charity donations, so if I calculated correctly, it would take me more or less 12 months of 0 other spending to get the full amount.
The issue is that I suppose I'm often impulsive with more frivolous online purchases. December and January are somewhat of exceptions, due to this month having to buy presents and next month having to renew an annual subscription, but even other months, I frequently spend my money on ultimately useless things without planning to do so in advance.
I don't seem to have any form of savings account right now, and I have no idea how to make one...
So I come here to ask: if you bought an expensive ($500+ USD) fursuit, how did you save up for it? Was there anything in particular to help motivate you? Especially if you struggle with impulsive behavior, I would appreciate some personal experience stories if you feel comfortable sharing!
Thank you. Have a great day!
Just a warning, a lot of suit makers will not work with minors. You can't enforce business contracts with minors so if something goes wrong the maker is left holding the bag and can be out money and a suit.
Not saying you're going to do anything, but in general it makes suit makers wary of doing business with minors. Sometimes makers will work with parents though so before you commission if they have a "no minors" clause ask if they will with with a parent.

I unfortunately have heard similar stories to furfear’s about MFLs bad customer service and communication. They have delivered products that don’t match the reference and description given multiple times, as recently as a couple months ago. It’s an ongoing problem that is unacceptable for any maker, especially one as large and old as MFL. When choosing a maker you definitely want to look up any bewares they may have and check reviews from past customers. Good communication is essential for me when considering a maker as a fursuit is such a specialized item and quite expensive, they should give you regular updates once the suit is actively being worked on and always ask questions if they’re unsure about something instead of just assuming.
