remember your mortality :: memento mori, a kennel with many secrets untold. these dogs reveal very little about their pack to others, and reveal only what is necessary. these dogs have been known to be committed, cunning, and intelligent creatures with pride. they are true socialites and carry themselves with a sense of pride and class. they know how to behave around other dogs and they know how to withdraw information from others. pups are conditioned to be well-spoken and insightful while saying the bare minimum.

but do not forget to live :: these dogs lay their claim to an intricate cave system located at the base of a mountain. these dogs are not only cave dwellers and have many dens located in the dense forest that surrounds the base in case of emergency. puppies are taught to navigate through the caves and forest from very early on and all newcomers are accompanied through the caves for a month. dogs are permitted to explore the caves, mountain and forest and are in fact encourage to explore and gather what they can.

as time waits for no one :: the kennel has deep religious beliefs with multiple gods and festivals representing many different things. the most respected god is morrigan, the kennel’s goddess of death. religion is a wip

and all things come to an end :: any and all dogs that prove themselves to be useful are welcomed into the pack, however smaller dogs are a rarity. dogs are all given jobs based on their abilities, stature and affinity for different areas. there is no trend in colours necessarily, and general appearance means very little to the kennel. the dogs also are known to adorn themselves with tribal paints, jewellery and hides, the first craftsmen believed to be taught by the gods. different accessories and paint mark different ranks and experience. jewellery is usually saved for the highly respected dogs within the kennel such the priest, leaders, council and elders.

"Who was that?" Nefiri turned to her apprentice and asked, but didn't pry further when she shot her mentor a look that said anymore questions in that way was not welcomed.

Devise huffed silently, "why is everyone so interested in him?"
"Well, he's Ola'keyta's litter-mate, of course everyone would be interested."

Devise turned away, clearly annoyed as she absently looked towards the entrance of the king's moss-covered den, then letting her mind wander to Norman, the intriguing doberman that she can't seem to figure out.
Normally, it would be easy for the others to sense a newcomer's intentions, their aura would have revealed everything. But Norman - that one dog was different.

"Nefiri?" she caught herself saying before she could stop herself, "what do you think of Norman?"
The ivinaki hesitantly looked at her apprentice suspiciously, then a small grin crept onto her muzzle "is someone fond of her findings?"

As Devise opened her mouth to rebut, a sudden sharp howl seared through the air, interrupting her and silencing the entire pack.

The two brothers had re-emerged from the cave, and Norman, as usual, looked about the camp with that calm demeanor of his, Ormani then let his gaze fall on Devise, summoning her over to him.
Hesitating slightly, she got on her paws and padded slowly over to the two dogs, letting her head hang low and eyes kept trained on the earth beneath her paws, feeling the pack's gaze fall on her as she noticed some of the females shooting her curious glances and hearing the cani'ro's squeal with excitement.

She must have miscalculated her steps, because the next thing she found herself stopping to, was knocking straight into Norman, him looking down to her with a mischievous grin but with his signature tranquil expression.
"Chin up sweetpea." he mocked quietly, knowing that she dared not say anything in front of the king.
Devise shot him a glare instead.

"Devise," Ormani started, his voice laced with a trace of gentleness, " from now on, you will work with Norman by your side, teach him our ways, and teach him about The Forgotten's language."

Devise looked up in alarm, wanting to ask for a change before she was interrupted once again by the king, who has turned back to the pack.

"It is all true, my friends, that this dog here is my blood brother," Ormani barked, making sure that the pack could hear him, "we had once been separated as litter-mates, but the gods have led him back to me and he shall be granted the position of Jiradi."
He sucked in a deep breath before continuing.

"and in order to celebrate this, everyone, with the exception of the jiradi, the cani'ro's, the mar'eye and the ivinakis, will be sent out into the forest in groups of four to hunt as much as you can, and to bring home anything that you find interesting, we shall all get ready for a feast fit for the whole pack."

Just as Ormani finished his speech, everyone howled in agreement, and all Devise could do was scowl and sulk, her mind riddled with having to be stuck to Norman for everything that she had to do from then on.
But a small part of her was secretly glad that she could get to know him better, excited even, and she tries her best to push that thought to the back of her mind.

Lewis sighed as he looked down at his little buddy, nodding in agreement. "You'd think there'd be at least one bad guy prowling around or something..."
"Exactly!"
As the two bantered on, they failed to notice the shadowy figure dart into the brush. They did, however, hear the rustling as whoever had hidden themselves was getting comfortable.
Immediately the duo got into defensive stances, with Lewis slowly stalking forward and Clarke flanking him. "Show yourself!" Lewis barked. "You're trespassing on Orphan Syndicate territory! We'll give you the chance to leave peacefully..."
"...or we'll be forced to chase you out ourselves!" Clarke yipped, finishing the thought.
There was a small yipe from the brush as a brown and white basenji leaped out of the bush, shaking and shivering in fear. "How did you hear me?" he wailed. "I was trying to be as quiet as possible! I'm so sorry, please don't kill me!"
Lewis quirked a brow and glanced over to a confused Clarke before turning back to the brute. "Relax. We're not gonna kill you."
"You weren't being THAT quiet," Clarke chimed in.
"Yeah! We could've heard you a mile away."
The basenji whimpered softly. "I knew it, I'm no good at this wild-dog stealth thing... Oh, I'm gonna die out here!"
Clarke tilted his head curiously. "Are you a stray?"
"Abandoned, but yes, I suppose you could say that," the brute sighed over-dramatically. "I haven't eaten in days! I'm starving!"
Lewis blinked before stepping towards the basenji. "Why don't you come with us? We can help you out..."

Meanwhile, as the newly-formed trio made their way back to camp, Nukka and Padme were hunting when they, too, heard a noise in the brush. Padme perked up immediately. "Nukka, did you hear that?!"
"Yes, now quiet down," the Lapphund growled, "they could be-"
"What if it's a wolf?!"
"Padme!"
As the faes argued, they failed to see three dogs walk out of the bushes fearlessly. They only turned around when they heard one clear her throat. "If you two are done arguing..." the older Doberman murmured, raising her brow slightly.
"Would you two be as kind to let us know where we are?" the pit asked, tilting their head to the side. "We're terribly lost, and Yarrow here-" they motioned towards the small tenderpaw "-is awfully tired. We'd appreciate a place to rest, if you know of any?"
The two pack faes looked at each other before nodding and standing a little taller. "Follow us."

The meeting went rather smoothly - all four dogs were welcomed into the Orphan Syndicate warmly, and things seemed to be going well... That is, until two more groups showed up.
It started with the bi-colored Ibizan brute - he appeared with a confident aura, but also looking horribly lost. His name was Koda, and he was more than happy to join a kennel. After him came a large Dane mix with a Bermese Mountain tenderpaw and a Saluki pup - Carlisle, Brutus, and Amy, respectively - who'd recently lost their pack and had caught word of the Orphan Syndicate from a passing mutt. They'd gone off in search of Lewis and his pack, and were overjoyed to find them - even moreso when they were accepted into the pack.
It wasn't until later that day, when Martha began mentioning that the pups were due soon, that Lewis realized the need for a shaman.
