So I want to make my first full suit. I’ve seen how to do it and have made many partials. I feel that I have most of the skills to up the quality and I’ll have money after Christmas to do it. I decided this character because it’s based off the gender fluid pride flag- does this seem too hard? I have tons of other refs and it’s only some stars/stripes that can easily be patterned in my mind. Anyway tips or suggestions are extremely helpful at this time! Thank you for responses!

Larkspur1678 wrote:Good quality fur will run you $22-$30 a yard. I personally wouldn’t go any lower in quality than luxury shag if you want the suit to last more than a couple years. Lower quality fur = less dense fur, that makes shaving very hard(backing shows through) and the ‘shedding’ that can come from regular washings and brushings has a larger effect on already thin fur. For a starter suit that won’t be used long term however, it can be good practice. If going to somewhere like Joann’s for fur, a good tip is to part the fur and see if/how much of the backing shows. Generally, the less backing you can see the better the fur. It also gives you a good reference on how price effects quality and you can make your own choice as to what you feel works best for you.

For other supplies like foam, plastic, fleece, etc., I’m gonna bring Joanna up again because they have most of the supplies you would need and always have coupons on their website. Also check the fabric remnants bins for good deals on fleece/vinyl/etc. that you may not need a lot of. I got pleather for a collar prop this way, it was just under half a yard which was plenty.

Underneath, you want a balaclava for your head and underarmour heatgear or a different brands equivalent for your body. If you have long hair you might also want something to keep it pinned back, I used to put mine in a quick ponytail when I had long hair.

I don’t think I shared my new suit yet? I commissioned a fullsuit of my fursona from Crystal Creations and it came in just before MFF!

Ah! Nice suit!
And that's a good idea, I'd probably be maybe 5' 8" by the age i'm going to make the suit (around maybe 14 or 15), and I'm planning on just going out in public with it (not comfortable with people maybe knowing who i am).

What's best for cutting the foam/fur? I've seen people use sewing scissors, x-acto knives, and normal scissors for the fur, and I've seen pocket knives for the foam, as well as scissors if it is a sheet of foam.

hello guys! this is my third fursuit that I am doing, and I'm learning so much from so many sources. I've learned that patience is DEFINITELY the key to fursuit making. do not rush on making them. on my last 2, I made them in less than a week because I was so excited, and they didn't turn out as well as I thought they'd be. This boy here is my sona and will magnetic horns I can move around and magnetic eyelids for more expressions c: he is on the pattern stage until I get his fur );;

does anyone know how to calculate how much fur I'd need for the head, tail, and paws for each color ?? how do fursuit quoters do that stuff ?? );;; plz help haha

anyway, any critques and suggestions would be very much appreciated, thanks !!

@Extra festive bug - An exacto knife works best imo because it’s easy to cut out complex shapes with it and it doesn’t cut the ends of the fur like scissors could. For foam it depends on the thickness, I used an electric knife for large chunks and a combo of scissors and a knife(any small-medium knife works) for smaller pieces and touch-ups.

@vencrypt - The head looks amazing so far! I love how the mouth and eyes look especially. The only critique I have is that the nose looks a bit small in proportion with the big eyes and teeth.
EDIT: Forgot about fur oops. I’d go with a yard of the red and the black, and 1/2 yard of white. A yard of fur for me just about covered the twin size bed I had at the time for reference.

I've got a half yard of white so I'm set with white. I am actually using leftover micro fleece from when I made my onesie. I'll be covering the muzzle and pretty much most of his front face with micro fleece to maybe cut down the cost for fur. Kind of like this ?

And I actually realized the nose was too small after I had sewn and glued it down,,,, (also that thing in his nose is actually just my phone charger, it's just there to show the nose is indeed pickable)

I just finished a tasty new set of puffy, elbow length paws and a v curly husker tail~

I found the husky-looking fluff at Hobby Lobby a while ago and it has the
neat "guard hairs" and undercoat like the real thing ;v Sometimes I
order samples from places because I'm a total nerd,
and because pictures rarely do pile fabrics justice e__e

Now I have to do.. DISHES >:C

it is doable, but it will be tough. especially the freckles around the face, since they will have to all be hand sewn. i would say to simplify the design just a tad (mainly the tail) but you can take the challenge if youd like.

but let me just say, its way easier said than done.

Sorry for the late response, but thanks for the answers regarding multi-jaw fursuits!

Like I said, I would like to share an image of my fursona once I make one, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet... :' )

If my sona turns out to be too expensive to make, I do have other options at least!

Image
(Kinda old art, please forgive me ;;;; )

I would obviously have to create a proper ref for this guy, but I wouldn't mind having his design as a fursuit instead, even if it's a lot simpler than what I usually make.
