He was swimming normally, was very active, and ate a couple bloodworms I offered him. But then during the night he suddenly declined, and now he's swimming sideways, won't eat anything, and he's really lethargic. He seems bent into an S shape and his fins are clamped, too. He is occasionally flaring at his reflection so he's responsive. I'm thinking it's swim bladder disease and I plan in fasting him for a few days but I'm so worried. I already love this little guy.

I got a betta fish from Petco and he didn’t do well either, I wouldn’t recommend fish from petco.

This might seem like a silly question, but do goldfish become lonely when kept alone? I have one lone comet goldfish that I didn't intend to acquire, but who was given to me by a photographer who only wanted him for a picture and planned on chucking him into a lake afterward... I'm now trying my best with him. I don't really want another goldfish (one is certainly enough for me to handle), but I also don't want him to become lonely if that's actually a thing that can happen.

Goldfish are social and do best in groups, yup yup. If you don't want another it might be best to give him to your lfs or find him another home where he can have friends c:
It's awesome of you to take him in and he'll be fine for a bit but long term he shouldn't be alone.

Pretty sure that he was being sold as a feeder and that he’d meet the same fate if I brought him back to the store that the photographer got him from. He’s in a 50 gallon right now. Is that too small for him and another goldfish if I were to get a buddy for him? The primary issue is that I can’t afford anything larger right now.

Then you could keep him until you find someone with a pond to take him?
You'd ideally need 75 gallons for one so a 50 would be too small for two :c

So, i just ran into something that seems to be becoming way too common at my local Meijer. I went to take back bottles and cans, and in the cart I got was a baggie with a beautiful baby albino oscar. Now, in my state it has been snowing, so this baggie was half-frozen and so was the oscar.
My car retains a lot of heat, and I figured either he would make it, or I would give him a propper funeral.
Once I got home, he was still moving, so I ended up just quickly setting up a 10 gallon I had lying around. Well, he made it.
Im not planning to keep him in that small of a tank, I just had no other real option. Only problem, I have never kept an Oscar. Any tips or suggestions for this poor baby?

He has a lot of personality, and took to eating the shrimp i give my piranhas very quickly. Started calling him Permafrost

How does stuff like that even happen? I don't know anything about oscars but I'd love to see pics!

I really wish I knew, as this is the 6th or 7th time I have found fish in carts. I tend to just take the bags home with me, and the ones that make it end up being rehomed to friends and family who also fishkeep. The Oscar will probably just stay with me, seeing how i don't know anyone who can handle fish that get as big as he will. I have heard Oscars are a type of fish that can coexist with Piranha, but will be doing research before anyone gets tanked together.

I'm really sorry for this little fellow! :( i hope he has a great time in your care! He's super cute!
My dad cares for two Oscars, one being 12 inches long the other being 11 inches. Oscars themselves are very hardy fish and can be fairly aggressive. Placing them with docile fish such as goldfish or smaller fish such as gouramus can result in the more peaceful fishes death. Some great tank mates for them are severums and barbs (because they are rather quick and more often than not can escape an angry oscar). Placing them with a piranha is a bad idea as while both are more aggressive fish, a piranha may get angry enough one day and bite a large chunk out of the poor Oscar. Brine shrimp is a good food for them! They enjoy meaty foods and pellets, especially larger ones when they're older.
Once your little friend gets older, don't be too nervous if you see him laying on a pot or object in the tank. Oscars are rather pouty and dramatic fish from my experience and enjoy the feeling of smooth objects.
If you have any questions about tank cleaning with an Oscar or anything else, feel free to ask or pm me! My family has had our older Oscar, Lucky with us for 7 years now :)
