Lavenderpaw
The young gray-and-white she-cat was excited. She was an apprentice at last! She was the smallest of her litter, and she always felt that her siblings tended to pamper her and shelter her. While she felt grateful to them, she also wanted to finally prove that she'd become old enough to do things on her own. Smiling to herself, Lavenderpaw made her way out of the Cave Path, and stepped into the large main chamber, where there were cats hurrying past each other, or cats sitting down and leisurely sharing tongues with each other. Thinking of the promise she made to an older apprentice, Sharkpaw, about training extra for learning how to hunt (as she was so bad at it!), the small gray she-cat made her way toward the entrance.
"Whoa there," a voice behind her startled the young apprentice, "slow down, young 'un." Glancing behind her shoulder, Lavenderpaw saw that it was Shorefall, one of the most experienced warriors in SeaClan, approaching her. She stopped and respectfully waited for the older tom to catch up to her, before dipping her head in greeting. Shorefall mewed, whiskers twitching in amusement, "Where are you headed?" "The Training Grounds," the gray-and-white she-cat replied, "I'm supposed to meet Sharkpaw there because my hunting skills aren't so solid." Nodding, Shorefall offered, "I'll walk you down; the Sea Path is steep and narrow, remember?" Recalling the precarious path down to the shore, the young she-cat nodded gratefully.
As the two cats headed out to the landing outside the cave system they called home, they heard a panicked yowl from down below, followed by a sharp cry of pain, and another longer wail of grief from a different cat.
Shorefall
Shorefall shouted urgently to Lavenderpaw, having recognized the wailing as coming from his son, Cliffstripe, "Lavenderpaw, quick! Nightwing and Oakshadow are still at camp- tell them to come!" The smaller she-cat, while looking bewildered, did as told, disappearing back into the SeaClan camp. Shorefall made his way down, then, to where his son was staring fixedly over the edge of the Sea Path, eyes glazed over in shock and horror.
Cliffstripe
The longhaired brown tabby tom stared down after the way his apprentice, Cedarpaw, had disappeared. He was numb, frozen in shock. His paws were rooted to the spot. Cliffstripe nearly jumped in fright when he heard his father's voice next to him:
"Cliffstripe?"
The longhaired tabby turned his tear-stained face toward his father and meowed hoarsely, "He..." "It wasn't your fault," Shorefall informed him. "But..." Cliffstripe begain to protest; "he was too absorbed in his thoughts," the ginger tabby tom replied firmly, "Cedarpaw was too excited and hotheaded to heed your warnings." StarClan save me!
"Wh... What should I say to his parents?"
Before Shorefall could reply, Nightwing's voice came from above, "What happened?"
Oh StarClan, have mercy on me!
"Cedarpaw fell off the edge of the Sea Path," Shorefall mewed grimly. Cliffstripe felt his entire body begin to shake uncontrollably.
What am I going to do?? "I'm... I'm sorry!" he blurted out.
Oakshadow came down as quickly as he could, escorting his mate, and stood to the side, peering over the edge. His eyes seemed to lose focus for a moment as the brown tabby tom's face seemed to lose all color. Cliffstripe closed his eyes when Nightwing let out a distressed wail and slumped down onto the ground.
He was my charge. I should have made sure he was going slower. He swallowed, feeling a hard lump in his throat.
"It wasn't your fault," Oakshadow croaked as he came to stand next to the longhaired tom, "he was the headstrong one." Nightwing let out an odd noise, a mix of sobbing and hiccuping, before mewing hoarsely, "He was... he was excited and was proud to have become your apprentice, but... I agree," she added heavily, shivering, "He was too quick-tempered and stubborn to listen to instructions."
Cliffstripe opened his eyes and turned his gaze back to the shore, where the small, broken body of Cedarpaw lay on the rocks below.
Forgive me, Cedarpaw.
<The next day>
Warning: describing a dead body
Shorefall, Stormbreeze
The two senior warriors had volunteered to carry out this grim task. Shorefall and Stormbreeze gazed at the body of Cedarpaw for a few moments. The small apprentice looked even smaller in death, his face frozen into a mask of horror, paws splayed out under him at odd angles. It was Stormbreeze who broke the silence after what seemed like an eternity. The solid gray tom spoke, "Remember the last time we did this?" Shorefall murmured, his gaze fixed on the brown tabby apprentice's sad remains, "How could I forget?"
Stormbreeze let out a slow, heavy sigh as he mewed, "That haunted look in Leafstar's eyes..."
Shorefall added, "Fogkit was nothing but a bunch of bones by the time he was found."
Letting out a weary sigh, the ginger tabby tom continued, "Dappledawn found him first; she seemed to age by more than ten moons over the course of that single day." Stormbreeze sighed again as he meowed grimly, "Enough talk; let's bury him." "Right," Shorefall mewed slowly; the two SeaClan tom fell silent as they began to carry the young brown tabby apprentice known as Cedarpaw to his final resting place, up by the cliffs, as per SeaClan tradition.
(This moon)
???
A silver tabby tom made his way through the thick pine forest with great care. He'd heard of murderous crows, and how they lived in the very forest he was traversing through. The only reason why he was in this accursed place was because the cats in the area told him about how his sister, Silkfeather, had gone to a clan of cats called SeaClan after SycamoreClan, her old one, had disbanded. Clenching his teeth, the rogue tom recalled how Silkfeather, or Silk as she was known by back then, had stalked away after an argument with him one night. He gave a long sigh before continuing on his way; unbeknownst to him, however, several pairs of eyes were watching him from the bushes.
Rippleheart
The gray tabby permaqueen was helping with the border patrol that day, and she was one of four cats who were watching the rogue tom. Rippleheart nodded to her patrolmates, who nodded in response. It was time.
"SeaClan, attack!" called the gray tabby she-cat; the four cats of the border patrol let out yowls of challenge at the silver tabby tom, and leapt out of the bushes.
Juniperfrost was the fastest; the tom, though he had only joined a moon prior, showed great strength and loyalty to the Clan in the short amount of time he had been there. Rippleheart and the other cats slowed down to a halt as the rogue tom, now pinned under Juniperfrost's weight, snarled indignantly, "Get off me!" The burly gray-and-white warrior growled, "Quiet, you are in SeaClan territory." Rippleheart nodded and continued, eyeing the silvery tabby tom, "Tell us what business you have here, and if you play us false-" "This is SeaClan territory?" The rogue tom inquired, eyes wide with surprise, "I thought they said this place belonged to the crows!" Flinching at the remark, the gray tabby permaqueen shook her head, explaining, "No. It isn't, and never has been. This belonged to our ancestors who lived here, a mighty clan called IceClan, who perished at the paws of rogues, and forced to merge with the remnants of the other clans SeaClan and CloudClan." Cliffstripe, who had been just about silent the entire time (Rippleheart couldn't blame him- he'd lost his apprentice just a moon ago), spoke firmly, his eyes focused on the rogue, "We won the battle against the crows, and took back the Pine Grove from the murderers."
The silver tabby tom meowed quietly, chilling everyone present down to their bones:
"I came to look for Silkfeather."
In the heavy silence that followed, the rogue tom added, "She is my sister." Rippleheart looked at her Clanmates and asked, "Should we...?" Juniperfrost meowed quickly, freeing the silver tom, "we should probably take him to Leafstar." Knowing that Juniperfrost did not know the story of the brave queen, Rippleheart nodded. "We will take you to Leafstar, our leader. He will tell you all you need to know." The rogue tom seemed to sense the change of emotions as he frowned slightly, though he meowed evenly, dipping his head in acknowledgement, "All right."
(Sometime later, at the camp)
Leafstar
Leafstar meowed quietly, pawing at the ground, "We can't just let him influence her." Honeytuft, the honey-colored medicine cat, meowed solemnly, "I know, and StarClan is worried too." Sandripple, the former RidgeClan medicine cat, cleared his throat before meowing quietly, "I know this isn't very happy news to any cat, but we have no choice but to watch her closely." "For now," Dappledawn emphasized, as Leafstar let out a low, frustrated hiss, "Leafstar. We don't want Splashpaw or Stormfang to know we are onto them just now." Honeytuft nodded, adding, "For now, we must allow her to train with the others, see if they will give a more positive influence to her." Leafstar meowed, sighing, "I suppose we have no choice here." Nodding, the three medicine cats excused themselves and left, citing the need to gather herbs for the stock.
Leafstar sat alone, thinking about Splashpaw and Stormfang. StarClan save us, he pleaded silently.
"Leafstar?" a voice came from outside. The cream tabby tom sighed and stood. "Yes?" he called out. "It's me," came the voice, "Rippleheart." A faint smile on his face, the SeaClan leader told his former apprentice to come in. The gray tabby permaqueen came in, followed by a silver tabby tom who looked vaguely familiar for some reason.
Rippleheart swallowed and meowed, "This is Stickle, brother to Silkfeather."
Oh. Leafstar swallowed.
"Hello, Stickle," the cream tabby tom meowed, "we have... some bad news to share."
The silver tabby tom blinked, then his eyes grew dark. He asked quietly, "Is she... is she dead?" "I'm... afraid so," Leafstar replied, flinching; Stickle nodded calmly, though Leafstar could see he was anything but, the rogue tom's hackles rising. "I thought so," Stickle spoke, a long sigh escaping, "she was never a strong cat. Was it during kitting?" the silver tabby tom inquired; Leafstar shook his head, meowing, "She was very much weakened after she kitted in the dead of leaf-bare, but it wasn't that that killed her." He took a deep breath and meowed, "A traitor called Ravenwish murdered her and one of her kits, Cloudkit." Stickle's claws slid out as a reflexive action as he growled, "Where is this murderer?" Leafstar meowed grimly, "We executed him for the murders of your sister, your nephew, and two other cats. He won't be killing anyone ever again," he added, though he knew that wasn't quite true. Dark Forest cats could murder if they wanted, influencing living cats with their ideas...
Stickle nodded once and meowed, "Are any of her kits still alive?" Rippleheart spoke, "My mate, Ivynose, and I adopted the three remaining kits after Silkfeather passed away, and they are now apprentices, learning how to become warriors in our Clan." Stickle drew in a breath and asked quietly, "May... may I see them?" Leafstar meowed, dipping his head toward his former apprentice, "If Rippleheart says it is all right to do so." Rippleheart meowed, a soft purr escaping her throat, "Of course." Sticklet looked relieved as he meowed, "Thank you."
(The main camp)
Icypaw, Winterpaw, Magpiepaw
Icypaw was meowing solemnly to his siblings, "We should actually try now that Seapaw, Lightpaw, and Arrowpaw are ready to become warriors." Winterpaw, his pure white sister, nodded, "Yeah, they were the hardworking ones from the start, after all. Would have looked weird if us playful ones got to be warriors at the same time, eh?" Magpiepaw nodded, her black-and-white head bobbing up and down furiously, "Mmmm, let's actually work toward our own warrior ceremonies now that they get to be model apprentices." Icypaw sighed, "Look, remember what I told-" "We know," Magpiepaw interrupted, "there's some cats who pity us because our actual mum died right after we were born and all." "We're gonna work hard now, we were actually not trying, like you suggested us to do." Icypaw nodded, "Yeah, now we see that no one's actually judging us based on those facts, since they are encouraging us nonetheless."
"Icypaw, Winterpaw, Magpiepaw!" called Rippleheart from the direction of the leader's chamber, "can we have a talk with you three?"
Winterpaw blinked. "Us?" mouthed Magpiepaw; Icypaw took a deep breath and meowed, "Of course!" Soon, the gray-and-white tabby pelt of their adopted mother appeared from the dark path, followed by the pale form of their leader Leafstar and one other cat they did not recognize. When the three adult cats had reached the apprentices, Leafstar spoke, "This is Stickle, brother and littermate to your birth mother, Silkfeather." All three apprentices stared at the silver tabby tom with shock as the tom did so as well.
The staring 'contest' did not break off until Rippleheart cleared her throat after a few moments. The permaqueen meowed lightly, "He came to find your mother, but we told him what happened; he wanted to see you in person." Stickle nodded solemnly, meowing after taking a deep breath, "You remind me so much of your mother. All of you," he added firmly, "there's no doubt you are Silkfeather's kits." Before Icypaw or Winterpaw could say something, Magpiepaw, who had been the most vocal one of the three, blurted out, "Why take so long?" Winterpaw stared at her black-and-white sister wide-eyed, not believing her ears. Icypaw only looked down at the ground, his gaze not meeting his uncle's.
Stickle
"I'm sorry," the rogue tom began, swallowing hard, "I didn't have the courage to traverse this far, especially across the place called the Pine Grove." One of the two pure white cats, a tom, meowed quietly, "There must be rumors still of the crows who once lived there..." The other white one, a she-cat, added, frowning, "but they were all defeated some moons before we were born." The black-and-white she-cat, who had voiced the question, meowed thoughtfully, "That... could happen." The white tom inquired, his eyes suddenly meeting the silver tabby's gaze evenly, "So why now?" Stickle flinched. His sister's kits were asking the hardest questions in the world to answer, and he had nowhere else to run. Stickle sighed, "Because I couldn't wait anymore. I had to know. Is Silkfeather doing all right in her new home? Did she even make it there?" He allowed his shoulders to sag and his body to shift into a sitting position as he lamented, "It looks like I was much too late."
In the silence that followed, the white tom spoke: "It's all right, Uncle." Stickle let out a breath he didn't know he was holding til that moment. He swallowed hard, meowing, "I fought with her you know, before she ran off to find her old Clan." He continued, letting out an ashamed sigh, "and I felt guilty... but my pride got in the way for so many moons." His black-and-white sister added kindly, "We've been raised by Rippleheart and Ivynose, and they have been nothing but kind and loving toward us." The white she-cat nodded, "and we are always grateful for it." Stickle turned to the gray-furred permaqueen and dipped his head gratefully, meowing, "Again, I must thank you that you raised them so well."
Icypaw meowed quietly, "You are going to stay right?"
"I-" Stickle swallowed. 'Can I settle down in one place? Just for my sister's kits?' He closed his mouth, thinking for what felt like an eternity. And at last, he had an answer.
"Yes."
'That wasn't so hard to say,' his inner voice told him smugly, 'ey?'
"Welcome to SeaClan," Leafstar meowed from behind. Taking a deep breath, Stickle turned around. The silver tabby tom meowed, dipping his head again, this time to the cream tabby leader of SeaClan, "I will join SeaClan. And I'll finally get to act as their uncle."

Icypaw was meowing solemnly to his siblings, "We should actually try now that Seapaw, Lightpaw, and Arrowpaw are ready to become warriors." Winterpaw, his pure white sister, nodded, "Yeah, they were the hardworking ones from the start, after all. Would have looked weird if us playful ones got to be warriors at the same time, eh?" Magpiepaw nodded, her black-and-white head bobbing up and down furiously, "Mmmm, let's actually work toward our own warrior ceremonies now that they get to be model apprentices." The black-and-white she-cat, who had voiced the question, meowed thoughtfully, "That... could happen." The white tom inquired, his eyes suddenly meeting the silver tabby's gaze evenly, "So why now?" Stickle flinched.
