Myriam and Pantaleon walked together, chatting quietly. "It really is more fun to patrol with you than with Zaos." Pantaleon was telling Myriam. "He is so quiet and disagreeable. Brr!" the Hobbit shook his shoulders. "You, on the other hand, are much nicer and warmer. You don't envelop yourself in icy silence like him." Myriam smiled. "Now, do stop talking like this about Zaos." she admonished Panto gently. "Even if he is like this, I believe he is a loyal and caring member of this village." in truth, she was touched by Pantaleon's remarks about her, but she didn't say a word about it. If the word spread that Pantaleon talked this way about Zaos, there would be murder.
"Now, what do-" Pantaleon never finished his question. A sudden noise behind them made both jump, startled. A large cow ran right past them, bowling over Pantaleon on the way. The hobbit yelled in surprise, though the yell was cut short abruptly. Myriam fell backwards into the trees, and lost sight of Pantaleon in a second. After the first cow, a second one, slightly smaller, ran past, following her mother in a panicked gallop.
For a few seconds, Myriam couldn't see anything, blinded by the dust raised by the two animals. Then she heard a quiet whimper. It sounded like Pantaleon. Heart racing, Myriam stood quickly, disentangling herself from the vines, and ran to his side. He was lying on the ground on his side, and from under his arms, which were clenched around himself, Myriam would see a widening red stain. "Panto!" she called in horror, dropping to her knees. "Y-Yeah?" the hobbit stammered. His voice was weak with shock.
Myriam felt herself panic. Something had hurt him bad. He was losing blood. They were two hours of casual walking away from the camp, and she didn't have any particular great skill in healing- "I think I cut myself on the branch." Panto said quietly. "It hurts." his voice brought Myriam back to the reality. "Of course. I need to think what we can do-" her throat was tight. Myriam quickly stood. "Alright, keep your hand tight on the wound, it'll stop it from bleeding too much. I'm going around to see if I find anything useful." Pantaleon nodded silently and laid his head heavily on the ground.
"Excuse us, but do you need any help?" Myriam jumped, looking around and seeing two people arrive. The one who had spoken was a tall man, with ebony skin and black hair. His voice was deep and calm, and he inspired confidence. The one next to him was a smaller woman, with lighter skin and hair. She was smiling shyly at Myriam. The Cyrrane leader was looking bewildered, not having expected their arrival. Then suddenly she nodded, putting both hands on the side of her head and closing her eyes. "Yes. I need help." she whispered.
Myriam kept her eyes closed, but a second later she felt a hand on her shoulder. "We'll help madam. I have some bandages with me." the man said. The leader took a deep breath and looked up. It wasn't very obvious, but tears pearled at the corner of her eyes. "Thank you." she replied quietly. The hand was gone now, and the man moved towards Pantaleon, who hadn't made a sound during the intervention. "Can you sit up?" he asked.
As Pantaleon did his best to do so, the man looked up at Myriam. "I can take care of him for now. If you like, you can go back to your home to get something better." he told her. Myriam hesitated. He looked all nice, but how did she know she could trust him?.. The doubt must have shown on her face. "Marya can go with you. That way, if anything happens, you'll have a hostage.." Myriam opened her eyes wide. "I-" she was ready to refuse, but she could see the sense in this. Still, she didn't want to leave Pantaleon alone with this unknown man, and the proposition slightly calmed her fears.. Finally, Myriam nodded. "Alright." she agreed. Her voice was quiet but determined.

Joan was reading an old book she had found when she heard two pairs of hurried footsteps coming nearer to her house. She looked up and was startled to see Myriam running towards her. "Myriam, what's wrong?" Joan felt worry rise up in her as she realized that the second pair of footsteps wasn't Pantaleon, but an unknown woman. "Pantaleon's hurt." Myriam stated as she arrived closer. She was out of breath. Running, she and Marya had managed to gain an entire hour. "He's in the forest with the other person who was accompanying Marya here. He's taking care of Panto for now, but I need you to come with us and help him." Joan, without asking any more questions, hurried inside the Healers Hut and went to get all the necessary things. Then, she hurried to go after Myriam and Marya.

Alone on his border patrol, Zaos was thinking. He knew that Laedrya would be soon giving birth and the simple thought worried him. Despite their powers, deaths by childbirth weren't uncommon in the elven world, and Zaos worried that Laedrya might be in danger, despite the thought that Joan would be there to support her. He didn't trust in the humans yet. They were weak, mindless and easily broken- yet Zaos couldn't help but try to stop these dark thoughts. Something told him he might be wrong. Something told him he might need to reconsider this...
Suddenly, Zaos stopped in his tracks. He had heard something. Moving with an elf's natural silence and grace, he slowly started moving towards it. It sounded like... Music? What a curious thing. Who would be playing music out here, in the forest? Zaos got closer and finally saw where it had been coming from. A man was sitting by a dead campfire, playing on an instrument. He looked young, but his hair was strangely grey-white, as if all color had been leached out of it. Next to him was the case of the instrument, a short sword scabbard and a backpack. The man wore travel-worn clothes, but still in good conditions. Zaos could not see his ears, but as he was neither short nor stocky, Zaos guessed he was human.
Suddenly, the man stopped playing and froze. He seemed to have heard something. His head turned towards the location Zaos was hiding, and his eyes seemed to pierce through. Zaos froze. Had he heard something? Then the man spoke. Hearing his voice, Zaos realized he was more like a boy than a man. "Who is there?" Zaos was surprised. How had he known he was there?.. "Me." he decided to show himself. Stepping out of the bushes, he stood straight, watching the boy with the instrument from above. The boy stood up too. "What do you want?" he asked. His voice wasn't very nice, but it wasn't completely hostile either. Zaos, still interested, tilted his head. "I am patrolling on my villages territory." Zaos paused. Had he really just said 'My village'? Did he consider himself part of it? "And I heard someone play music."
The boys eyes narrowed. "That was me. Now what?" in truth, his heart had sped up at the mention of a village. He may not be very social, but a lone life was beginning to get on his nerves, and the simple thought of seeing more people was very reassuring. The elf in front of him seemed to hesitate. "Now that I found you, I need to ask why you are here." the boy shrugged. "Why should I answer that?" he asked. The elf sighed. "Because if you don't have any good reason to be here, you either leave now or join us." the boy hesitated now. "I have no good reason to be here. And I wish to join your village." he had no wish to talk about his past life. The elf sighed. "Fine then. Follow me."

Many hours later, everyone was back in camp. Thanks to Rovi and Marya, Pantaleon had been brought back safely to the Healers Hut and Joan was taking care of him. Myriam, alone, was thinking hard. She now had three warriors, but no warrior chief yet. She knew she needed one, but she just didn't know what to do just yet. Rovi would have been good, but he had just arrived today, and she could just imagine it if Zaos was under a human.. Same for Marya. That brought her thoughts back to Zaos. Could he be a warrior chief? It was true he didn't seem very calm and thoughtful as she may have wished a warrior chief to be, but he was smart, a good warrior and capable of leading others. Having him become Warrior Chief would strengthen his loyalty to Myriam and that could only be a good thing.
Her mind made up, Myriam stood up. She knew what she had to do, and she could do it now. Myriam walked to the center of the village and climbed on the small stage some of the villagers, including Aaron and Zaos, had made for her. "May everyone who can now gather in the village center!" she called. Quickly enough, groups of people arrived and stopped in front of her. "Now, I have several things to say. First, a not very great news." she paused. Of course, a few people were absent. Pantaleon of course, and Joan, who was taking care of him. Myriam also noticed that Laedrya wasn't here. She must be too tired. "On our patrol, Pantaleon and I were bowled over by two frightened cows. While falling over, Pantaleon hurt himself on a sharp branch. The wound is serious, but Joan is positive that it is not deadly." of course, the rumor of it had gone around, but Myriam did notice some people look worried and glance in the direction of the Healers Hut.
"Second is better news. Three new people have joined us today. Rovi Wild and Marya Ward have helped me after Pantaleon's accident and then asked if they could join us. Both will be warriors." Several people looked in their direction. Marya was smiling widely, while Rovi was stoic. Myriam continued. "The last person to join us is Jaymes Weitzman. He will be a scout." The young boy had his head turned to the side and didn't look at anyone. Myriam looked over everyone and finally stopped her gaze on Zaos. He looked back at her, emotionless. "I have also come to realize that I have no warrior chief, despite having a hunting chief." Myriam started talking. She was still looking at Zaos. The elf held himself a bit straighter, and understanding began to dawn in his eyes.
"And after thinking, I have decided to promote Zaos Faelen to Warrior Chief. Since I have founded this village, he had stood by me and always been there. He is smart, courageous and resourceful. I believe he will make a good Warrior Chief." finishing her talk, Myriam was surprised to see something very new in Zaos' eyes. It was gratefulness.

"Aaron, can you come with me please?" Hilda looked at her husband, who nodded. "Yes, of course. What's wrong?" he asked. Hilda looked embarrassed, but she shrugged. "I'll tell you soon." she told him, and started moving towards Myriam, who was sitting alone on a bench. Aaron, curious but worried, followed silently. As they came closer, Myriam looked up. "Is everything alright?" she asked. Hilda smiled. "Yes. I just wanted to tell you something." the dwarf hesitated. "I'm pregnant." There was a short silence. Aaron was staring at Hilda, his eyes as round as saucers. Myriam's eyes were less round, but she was still surprised, though a smile was starting to grow on her lips.
Hilda, worried, was looking at Aaron. She punched him lightly on the shoulder. "Oh, please say something! You don't know how worried this made me!" she exclaimed. Without saying anything at first, Aaron just turned to her and hugged her tightly. "Don't be!" he finally murmured. "I was surprised, but you don't know how happy this makes me." Hilda smiled. Next to them, Myriam kept quiet, but smiled. The village was becoming more and more alive.
