Prologue

Damien--------------------------------------------Alexia-------------------------------------------Jake

He knew that the man was no good for her. She deserved more. She deserved someone who was kind, someone she could trust. Yet Jake could see the way that she looked into his eyes, and knew that he had no chance.

Alexia-------------------------------------------Jake

September 1990

Alexia

The young girl gripped onto her mother's hand, her eyes darting across the classroom filled with fear. They all seemed to be looking at her. Her fingers tightened slightly around her mothers reassuringly soft hand, and bit her lip. Her hair was a very fair blonde colour, which often seemed as if it were white, but it was her eyes that made her stand out. They were a strong, deep purple, even if they were hidden by a pair of chunky glasses that magnified her eyes.
At the moment however, those eyes were filled with fear at the prospect of a new school. Even at the young age of six, Alexia was beginning to show her uneasyness of being around new people. She looked up at her mother, and gave her a small tug.
"Mum, can I sit down now?" She asked quietly. Her mother looked down at her, and smiled. Evidently she thought that her daughter was eager to meet new people and make friends, but all Alexia wanted was to get out of the spotlight. Her mother bent down, and gave her a swift hug, saying in her ear, "have a good day sweetie, make lots of friends", before sweeping out of the room, leaving Alexia standing at the front. It suddenly dawned on her that she had to pick somewhere to sit. She picked an empty two seat table, took out her pencil case and began inspecting it, her eyes sliding over the large variety of coloured pens and pencils, trying to avoid any eye contact.
The classroom filled up around her, until she found that the spot next to her was the only spot left. She breathed a sigh of relief, and returned to her pencil case. Not ten seconds later, she heard the chair being scraped back, and a person sitting in the seat that she so wanted to be empty. She bit her tongue, and tilted her head slightly, trying to look at the person from the corner of her eye.
The young boy had scruffy brown hair, which stook up at the back. He looked pretty average, but he had golden eyes, which weren't exactly unusual like hers. She watched him fiddle around with his school rucksack from the corner of her eye, and jumped slightly when he turned his head to look at her. He didn't say anything, but smiled warmly. She found herself smiling back at him.
"I'm Jake" he said, his voice young and high, words disjointed with the traces of youth.
"I'm Alexia" she replied softly, tucking a blonde curl behind her ear.
Before they could continue their introductions, the teacher called the attention of the class. Alexia smiled to herself. She was terrified of new people for fear of being rejected, so when Jake had simply introduced himself, she could already feel a friendhsip forming.

A friendship that would last for years.

Alexia-------------------------------------------Jake

June 1996

Alexia

Alexia smoothed out her dress, looking herself up and down in the mirror. Her fourteen year old self looked back at her through her magnifying glasses, behind which lay those beautiful purple eyes. Her hair was newly washed, the blonde curls smelling of coconut extracts. The dress she wore was picked out for her by her mother: a dark blue piece that was knee length with small sequins lining the bottom. She leaned towards the mirror, pulling a face so she could inspect her make-up. For her first time, she hadn't done that bad of a job, if she must say so herself. She wasn't one for make-up or skirts. She still had her tom-boy traits that she had when she was in primary school.
There was only one person on her mind tonight: Jake. Since he had moved to a different school when they reached the end of the year that they were seven, they had still remained good friends. She thought of his golden eyes, and grinned to herself, her braces catching on the light. She ran her hands over her hair once again, looking herself up and down for what must have been the twentieth time that hour, nodded at herself, and then headed for the door where her friend was waiting for her.

School socials. Possibly the most awkward social event of everyones life. Alexia was sitting at a table with guys that she did not know. Girls on one side, boys on the other. Despite chatting with the girls next to her, it did bug her that Jake was in her direct line of site. She bit her lip, and tried to concentrate on the conversation, but kept on stealing glances at the back of his neck.
The meal seemed to last for ages, and it was finally time to dance. Alexia made a bee-line straight for Jake, trying to walk with as much glamour as possible in her two inch high heels.
"Jake!" She exclaimed, as if she didn't know he was here. "How are you?"
"I'm good." Jake replied with a sheepish grin. He voice had broken, and he was a head taller than Alexia who was begining to show the signs of adulthood herself. Alexia smiled warmly, and then grabbed his hand and pulled him to the center of the dancefloor, yelling over the music, "come on, lets dance!" The two of them danced awkwardly, until a slow song came on. Somehow, she had her arms around his neck, and he had his arms around her waist. This is perfect! He's going to kiss me, I know it! It will be a perfect first kiss! Alexia thought to herself, biting her lip to contain her excitement.
"Um, Alexia?"Jake said in her ear over the music.
"Yes Jake?" Alexia replied, already having a picture in her mind of the two of them kissing on the dancefloor as fireworks went off outside.
"Its good that we're still friends, isn't it? We're like siblings, aren't we?" Jake asked.
It took a few seconds for Alexia to reply. The perfect image of the perfect kiss with the perfect guy shattered. "Yeah, you're like my brother" she replied. The loudness of the music drowned out how disappointed she sounded, but she unwrapped her arms from around him. "Yeah, just friends" she said with a smile. "I'm just going to go to the bathroom" she said, thinking of the excuse on the spot. She squeezed her way out of the crowd of dancing couples, and went straight for the door.
The fresh air seemed to cleanse her mind. Siblings. Siblings. That was all. He would only ever see her as his sister. Something wet dripped down Alexia's cheek, and she wiped the tear away with the back of her hand.
Just friends.

July 1998

Alexia

The young woman checked herself in the mirror one last time. The young, buck-toothed, small little girl had transformed. She was five foot six, with straight blonde hair that was cut short to make her look older, she wore contact lenses so her beautiful purple eyes shone clearly, her facial features had smoothed out, her skin clear of imperfections. She wore light make-up that highlighted her features, and clothes that suited her attractive figure. In short, the ugly duckling had turned into a swan.
"I'm off mum, see you later!" She called, closing the door behind her before her mother could reply. She set out along the pavement which led down to the centre of town, and the cafe where she was meant to meet Jake. The sixteen year old walked smoothly, unaware of her beauty. She hadn't seen Jake in nearly half a year now, a result of going to an all girls boarding school on the opposite side of the country. Her school was pristine, and was always fighting for first place in the league tables. It was stressful, but she enjoyed it none the less.
She entered the coffee shop to find Jake standing up to greet her. He had grown even taller in the amount of time they had spent apart, and was a good head and shoulders taller than she was. He had buffed out as well due to being in the rowing team at his school, though his hair was the same dark brown colour, though he had cut it short which suited him. His cheeks were angular, his jaw strong and defined. His golden eyes glittered as he saw her, and his face widened into a grin.
"Jake!" Alexia cried, rushing forwards and embracing him in a swift friendly hug. "How have you been? Gosh you've gotten tall!"
Jake laughed, and replied, "I've been very well. Tall? Yeah, I guess you could say that. But look at you! You're socially acceptable now in the height region!"
Alexia laughed and punched him lightly on the shoulder. "Come on, you said you needed help with something?" She asked, nodding her head towards the door. Jake nodded, and followed her out of the cafe.
"Yeah, I could use a girls opinion. I need a gift for my girlfriend for her birthday, any tips? I'm hopeless with this kind of stuff."
Alexia felt a small jolt somewhere in her chest, but held her composure. It was just the remains of a childhood crush, that is all. "Alrighty, jewellery. Get her some jewellery. Girls love jewellery. I'd go for a necklace if I were you."
The pair chatted animatedly as they wondered in and out of the shops together, finally finding a simple gold necklace with a cross at the end of it. A kiss. Alexia watched him from the corner of her eye as the shop keeper explained the necklace to him and discussed the price. Of course he would have a girlfriend, he goes to a mixed school. He's surrounded by girls, its inevitable, she thought to herself, feeling a pang of sadness at not having a boyfriend yet. She was sixteen, but she felt like she didn't know anyone. She had friends in her school area, and friends at home, but was unable to spend enough time at each to get to know the guys enough to get past the 'just friends' barrier. The sadness evaporated as Jake turned back to her, the necklace wrapped up in a box in a bag. The two wondered back to the cafe together, finding that the time had slipped away, and it was already starting to get dark.
"I guess this is goodbye" Jake said, looking down at Alexia, a sad look in his golden eyes.
"Goodbye for now. Hopefully we will see each other soon" Alexia said with a nod. The two shared a quick hug, their arms around each other, before parting ways.
On the walk back to her house, Alexia thought of how he had hugged her that last time. It felt more close than their greeting hug, but she didn't want to look too much into it. She was glad that they were friends after all.

Part 4

October 1998

Jake

The young man shivered in the cool October breeze. It was typical British weather, cold, damp and dark. He reached into his jean pocket, and drew out his phone. He clicked the centre button with numb fingers, and the screen lit up. 5.10. She was late. Typical woman, Jake thought to himself with a chuckle as he slipped the phone back into his pocket.
"Jake!"
Jake looked over his shoulder, to find Alexia hurrying towards him wearing skinny jeans that showed off her long legs, and a long coat which was tighter around her waist, showing off her curves. Jake stood up off the park bench where he had been seated for the last fifteen minutes, and walked towards her, his arms out wide welcoming her into his embrace. Their bodies met, and Jake caught a whiff of her perfume: Chance, by Channel. He broke apart, but held onto her arms.
"My my Alexia, looking great as usual" he said with a grin, to which she replied, "You're not looking bad yourself mister, been to the gym lately?" It was true, Jake had been spending a lot of time at the gym. He had grown even taller since he and Alexia had last met, and was now towering at 6ft1. He nodded back at her, and then motioned for them to sit down on the bench again.
Alexia laughed. "I take it you've been sitting there waiting for me? Oh I'm so sorry, got caught up with matters" she said, waving a hand. "Come on, lets go inside to somewhere warm. There's a Starbucks not too far from here." With a chuckle, Jake fell into stride with her as they walked down the street side by side.
Alexia was getting a lot of looks from passers by. She was a stunning woman, Jake thought to himself, shame she doesn't realise it. They turned into the coffee shop, and sat down at a two seated table in the corner.
"So Alex, how have you been?"
"I've been well, very well actually. And what about yourself?" She replied,
There was a pause in their conversation as a pretty looking waitress took their order. One skinny shot single latte for Alexia, one plain coffee for Jake.
"I've been alright I suppose." He said with a shrug, not really thinking before the words came out.
"I suppose? Whats happened?" Asked Alexia, curiosity making her beautiful eyes sparkle.
Jake shrugged once again, looking away from her. "Its nothing, just some mess with personal issues."
"Oh Jake, you know you can talk to me, right? We're like siblings, and siblings always talk to each other about problems, right?" A smile twitched onto her face, tweaking the corners of her lips upwards. Jake chuckled softly, and waved a hand. "Just some mess with my ex. She's being a pain." Alexia leaned forwards in her chair, her expression soft, and Jake knew that she was listening intently.
"She won't get off my back about me breaking up with her. She wants us to get back together."
"And do you?" Asked Alexia softly, to which Jake shook his head and ran a hand through his short, yet somehow still messy, hair.
"No, she was too much for me." He said softly. "Its a pain, having a relationship." He added thoughtfully.
Alexia bit her lip slightly at this, to which Jake looked up at her. "Oh" he said, an eyebrow raising. "You're with someone, aren't you? My Alex is with someone!" He said, a smile stretching onto his face. "Do you like him?" He asked, leaning forwards.
Alexia laughed. Jake noticed that she seemed more relaxed now that this news was in the open. "Of course I like him, why would I be dating him if I didn't?" She exclaimed, a wide smile on her face.
Jake watched her talk about her relationship, but didn't listen fully. It felt weird for her to be in a relationship, and an odd feeling crept up on him. He suddenly felt scared that she was going to get hurt. Brotherly love, that was what it was. Brotherly love.
The two of them chatted for the rest of the afternoon, until Alexia stood up. Jake looked up at her for a second, before standing up also. "I guess its goodbye then" he said sadly. Alexia dug her hand into her handbag, and which Jake raised his hand in the air to stop her. "I am a man, therefore I shall pay the bill" he said strongly. Alexia cocked her head, and crossed her arms, an amused expression on her face. "Wow, it looks like my Jake has turned into a gentleman" she said, starting to laugh. She reached forwards, and wrapped her arms around his neck. In response, he swiftly slid his arms around her back giving her a quick squeeze and saying in her ear, "We need to meet up more often", before breaking apart. She nodded fervently, and replied, "Definatly."
Jake watched her turn around, and leave the cafe, watched her wave over her shoulder, before turning right and starting to walk down the street. It flashed across his mind that he should walk her home, but he really had more important things to do.
