Monsters aren't Real

Monsters aren't Real…or at least that's what I always told myself. I'd have to check in on all the spots they could be hiding. The closet? No nothing ever there but I always closed the door anyways. Under the bed? No because my bed was one with drawers. In the laundry hamper? That didn't seem likely as it was too small. Little did I know that the monster would be hiding where I least expected within my small room. In the far corner is where the monster would appear. Why? Because they lived in the mirror. Who would have thought the monster would have been myself. Inside of me. I am the monster. And it has me grinning ear to ear.

You don't think about your nightly routine as it has become a habit. You have dinner, possibly a nice roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy. Maybe a handmade chocolate cake for dessert later in the night. You brush your teeth, wash your face, put your pajamas on and ask for a bedtime story that you love so much or you read one yourself. After all that, though, a parent would come in and tuck you in nice and snug before kissing your head and bidding you a good night… No? Well seems this night was not like the others. Mother wasn't the same. Something felt terribly off when she came and bid me goodnight. There was no little lullaby to her words as she usually did. No kiss to the head before she left as has been done since I was a babe. Once all seemed quiet something… or someone crept out from under my bed. “Mother?” She shushed me and was quick to pick me up in her arms. “We have to get out of here. I don't know who or what that was” she told me. We didn't know the creature was on the other side of the door…Listening and waiting to be found out.

as children we all fear the monsters under our beds or the ones hiding within our closets. however those are not the ones to be feared, because they are simply stories made to scare us into doing as we're told. the monsters we should fear are the ones in our heads and the ones in which the corrupted society have created. those are the real monsters. often we encounter these beasts, though usually we only hear about them, or the ones that draw the most attention. murder, theft, insanity, all the headlines on newspapers. the monsters who eat us personally are a lot smaller but yet they impact individuals the most. greed, lust, power and pain. there're are as many small monsters as there are emotions.

not so long ago a monster, a real one, took shape. nurtured by the hate, envy, and jealously felt by a singular person. a women in her late 30's, she was beautiful despite her age with long dark hair and eyes as blue as the caribbean sea. she had a son who shared the same hair as his mother yet his eyes were those of his father's a deep emerald green. on the outside the family was perfect, a hardworking husband, a good mother, and a model son. however they were far from that. the father was not loyal to his family and would stay out late getting drunk. the mother saddened by the insignificance her husband held of her was depressed and angery. both parents took their frustrations out on the son. one day the mother snapped, the son caughr his father with another, and without thinking, told his mother. she blamed eric. "you caused this, if only you had kept your mouth shut" these were the words spilt by moth parents. but no one had seen it coming, that such a tragedy would befall the evergreens. after all they were the picture perfect family. lucy evergreen, charged with the murder of her husband, edward evergreen and their son, eric evergreen was put into a mental hospital where she later died of a heart attack.

people are the real monsters. each of us holds our own demons, sometimes they consume us and turn us into beasts, other times they remain trapped and barried within. though you can never quite predict when a monster with slip out.
