Harrierstar sat atop High Rock, gazing down at the cats below him. He flexed his claws, gaining Honeystar’s attention as she struggled up High Rock. The she-cat wobbled over and took a seat beside him. Wrapping her tail around the multi-colored tom, she meowed, “Harrierstar, it’s okay. You’ll do great as the new ThunderClan lea-”
“I’m not worried.” The tom growled, interrupting her. Honeystar flattened her ears then scooted away from him, worried that she upset ThunderClan’s new leader. Harrierstar sighed and stopped flexing his claws, then continued with a little less sass. “I’m sorry, I’m just disgusted, Honeystar. I hate the fact that we had to bury Willowstar when she should’ve had five lives left and I hate the fact that I became the leader so quickly. I’ve wanted to become leader for a very long time, but not like this. I didn’t want to gain my nine lives because Willowstar got absolutely flattened by a monster.”
“I’m sorry for that, and I understand, but there’s nothing you can do about it now. All you can do is push on and be the best leader you can be, right?” The new leader gave Willowstar a quick look, then focused his attention back down towards the cats gathered underneath High Rock. He scanned them until his eyes finally landed on the silver fur of Forestpelt. The she-cat was allowed to stay in camp for another day. The day Forestpelt got voted to leave camp was also the night the Clan buried Willowstar. The next morning was when Harrierstar, followed by the ThunderClan medicine cats, went to receive his nine lives. That afternoon was when Harrierstar decided to exile the suspicious she-cat.
Taking in a deep breath, Harrierstar managed to calm himself before creeping to the edge of High Rock and signalled that the Clan Meeting was finally going to start. “We’ll begin with the most important part of the meeting: Forestpelt’s exile. The majority of us believe that you are responsible for Willowstar’s death. Do you have anything to say about that?”
“I didn’t do it!” Forestpelt exclaimed with less emotion in her voice now that she had a day to calm down from the shock of being exiled yesterday. “I swear I didn’t lead Willowstar to her death! I-I... I was just trying to help!”
“Really, now?” Harrierstar countered in disbelief. “Help who? The monster?”
“No, Harrierstar, the Clan! I was trying to help the Clan! I wanted to help you guys stay safe!” Forestpelt retorted frantically. Her eyes widened with hope as she called, “I saw the killer with RiverClan’s stupid deputy, actually! I know I did!”
“Mhmmmm... So, what’d they look like?” Harrierstar questioned, their eyes gleaming with a hint of amusement as they watched Forestpelt’s expression turn to one of self-disappointment and frustration.
“I... I never got a chance to look. B-but I heard them with Rooksea, I swear!” Harrierstar shook his head at the she-cat’s “lies.”
“You’re leaving, Forestpelt. Bubblefur and Lizardfang will be leading you out of ThunderClan’s territory.” The multi-colored tom said. Forestpelt began stumbling over her words, trying to fight her way out of getting exiled until she finally accepted her fate. With her head hung, she let the two cats lead her out of camp.
Once Forestpelt was no longer seen, Harrierstar flicked his tail and looked back at the cats in ThunderClan’s camp, his eyes shining with hope now. “On a much happier note,” He began, a smile forming on his face. “I have appointed Bubblefur as my deputy. I’m sure his calming personality and peaceful attitude will help me in making the right decisions to lead my Clan. I hope you will all accept my choice of deputy. With that, I will announce that the Clan meeting is officially over.”
---
Later in the night, two cats met in the woods, each having left the camp as discreetly as possible. One nodded to the other, a respectful greeting. The other mumbled a response, then lead them away. The pair spoke in hushed voices about nothing in particular, covering the ambient sounds of the forest with their own chatter. Their paws lead them to the Windclan border, which was now covered in Riverclan scent. They sat beside the pungent scent line, continuing to talk as they waited for one of their Riverclan allies to arrive.
The smaller of the two interrupted the lull in the conversation with a question. “So, what was your worst battle?”
The other cat turned their head, their voice quieting to merely a whisper. “That’s an odd question.”
Shrugging, the other cat glanced up at the sky. “Well, it looks like we’ll be here for a while. I figured we could swap stories.”
“Why don’t you start, then?”
The smaller cat immediately quieted and turned their head, hiding their face in the shadows of the trees. A hint of pity flashed across the other’s eyes, their pelt bristling as they recognized the emotion on the other’s shadowed face. “You don’t have to tell me, but it might make you feel better to let someone know about it.” They suggested, their tone careful. When the other hesitated, they added, “You can trust me, you know. We’re on the same team.”
Pawing at the fallen leaves around them, the smaller cat spoke stoically, yet their eyes turned dark with emotion. “There... was a dispute over Thunderclan’s border, and I was sent with some other cats to handle it. A new apprentice had snuck into the fight, and Thunderclan’s deputy had them pinned. I-” They shuddered, their fur standing on end. “I was so scared, I couldn’t let him die in his first battle... I-”
They paused, swallowing audibly before shaking their head. “I attacked her. I shoved her to the side and she fell. She fell into the gorge and I couldn’t help her and-”
They cut themselves off with a pained noise, their eyes closing as their fur bristled with unease. They’d never told this story before, yet it had eaten away at them for some time. Finally hearing it out loud was painful, too raw and real for them to handle.
But if they expected their partner in crime to feel the same way, they were dead wrong.
“You…” The larger cat whispered, staring into the other’s eyes like they could see their soul. A long moment passed in silence before the larger cat narrowed their eyes, any traces of empathy leaving their face. Their nose crinkled in a snarl, a growl bubbling in their throat.
“It was you. You killed her!” They growled, standing quickly. The smaller cat huddled into themself, hiding their face in shame. “I can’t believe I trusted you! A Windclan cat, you- you vermin! You disgusting, miserable excuse for a cat! You doltish, fox-hearted scum! You-”
The smaller cat looked up to see the other’s face contorted in pure anger, their teeth bared as they spat out various insults. A darkness hollowed out their eyes, every word they spoke carrying along unspoken threats. Their claws cut into the leaf litter below, tearing at the brittle things with barely restrained hatred.
As the other’s insults became more manic and less sensical, the smaller cat began to creep away from their partner, their fear evident in their every movement. The larger cat let out a hollow laugh, their teeth glinting in the starlight.
“Oh no you don’t. You won’t get away that easily,” they growled. Raising themself onto two legs, the murderous cat landed on top of their smaller friend, claws slashing at their pelt. The smaller cat hissed in pain, struggling onto their feet. The smaller cat swiped the other’s face and sprinted away as fast as they could. They were lucky that the other killer didn’t follow- who knows what they would’ve done if they caught up to them?

The Kill wrote:
“One more section to go...” Aeron mumbled to herself, putting a stick in its place. The dam seemed to be pretty sturdy, but it needed something. More mud! She pressed one of her paws into the pile of mud beside her, using the other to mark where she was working.
The killer ambled by, their fur raised as they kept replaying what happened last night. They had to get their revenge, but didn't know how. They decided that Aeron could probably offer some assistance in getting an idea to take out WindClan's deputy, though, so that's where they headed.
“Good morning.” The killer called as they finally spotted the beaver. They stepped towards the river's bank to help her see them better.
“Umm... Oh! Oh, hey! Hello, cat friend!” Aeron greeted the feline, taking her marking-paw off the dam so she could wave it towards them. A thin stream of water began to seep through where her paw was previously. Panicked, she shoved both her paws forward to stop the stream from leaking through, but the dam broke under the pressure of her movement. Slowly, her entire section began to crumble until it was nothing more than sticks and mud in the river. Aeron let out an annoyed sigh then fell into the murky water beside her so she could swim towards the killer.
“Sorry, I didn't mean to cause you to break your dam.” The killer apologized as Aeron lifted herself onto land and settled down beside the murderer.
“It's whatever. Besides, it was going to break one way or another. I can't make dams.”
“How's the two-leg situation?”
“Well... it’s over. I got two of those stupid beaver-killers’ legs stuck in their own traps but my colony is still dealing with the aftermath of our little fued. They destroyed our lodge and dam so we’re rebuilding that stuff right now.” Aeron replied, then looked around and asked, “Say, is there another killer here or are you by yourself?”
The killer instantly thought back on what happened last night. The other cat's words echoed in their mind. They snapped their tail from side to side as they felt wrath circulating throughout their body. It was one with their blood now. With a snort, the killer hissed, “By myself; I left them.”
“Oh, that sucks. Well... I'm assuming you came here for a reason. Want me to help you kill someone?”
“Yes, I'd appreciate that. I'm going after Lizardfang, WindClan's deputy.”
“Hmmmm...” Aeron sat in silence for a heartbeat, glancing out into the river until she looked at what was floating around in the water. She turned her body towards the killer, excitement causing her eyes to widen and gleam as she said, “Oh my gosh, I got it! For this, you're going to need poppy seeds and some type of prey.”
---
Lizardfang returned from patrolling Windclan’s- or, Riverclan’s, now- border, hungry and tired. She found a sunny corner and sat in it, deciding to rest before getting something to eat. Laying down in the sun and closing her eyes, Lizardfang fell in and out of a light sleep for some time before a nudge on her shoulder woke her up.
“Hello,” the persistent cat murmured. “I thought you might want something to eat. Besides, you should really sleep in your den.”
Lizardfang drew her face back in surprise as a large thrush was nudged towards her, a surprisingly plump piece of prey for this late into leaf-fall. Lizardfang’s stomach quickly got the better of her, and she dug into the meal with only a quick “thanks.” The other cat grunted and walked away, seemingly annoyed. While eating, Lizardfang ran into a few oddly crunchy pieces, but she just assumed they were feathers or bones she hadn’t cared to remove. Scarfing down the entire piece of prey, the Windclan deputy gathered some feathers to line her nest with before curling up and falling back into a shallow slumber.
---
Lizardfang stumbled over her own paws as she trudged over to the medicine den, her vision blurry. She had just woken up, yet her mind seemed unable to process anything. Confusion clinged to her fur like snowmelt, darkening her vision and making her dizzy. Despite her heart’s slow, calm beat, the deputy was overcome with anxiety. Why was this happening? Was she dying? She was too young, her clan needed her! She couldn’t die!
Leaning heavily against the den entrance, Lizardfang called out to Jaybird, her eyes wide and terrified. Jaybird quickly rushed over to the frightened cat who flinched away from the quick movement. Everything felt like it was moving too quickly, like Lizardfang herself was trapped in slow motion. Shaking her head, Lizardfang tried to calm herself and look at things objectively, but her thoughts were sluggish and nonsensical at best. Jaybird lead the stumbling deputy over to a nest, calling something over her shoulder. Lizardfang started to panic at the hollow echo of Jaybird’s voice, and her breath rapidly sped up.
“Please, help I…” she quickly muttered, her eyes wide with fear as her breath hitched awkwardly. “Please… please…”
Jaybird continued speaking to the other medicine cats as she tried to assess Lizardfang. After a moment, her gaze hardened and she turned around, heading towards Spiraeapelt. The two cats exchanged a few words, although Lizardfang couldn’t hear what they said, before Jaybird returned to the deputy with a bundle of leaves. She dropped the bundle, rolling out a couple of round seeds and nudging them towards Lizardfang. The deputy struggled to make sense of what the medicine cat was telling her.
“You… eat these… they help… stress and shock…” Jaybird’s voice faded in and out of Lizardfang’s hazy mind, her own slow steady heartbeat drumming too loudly in her ears for her to concentrate. Following the advice, Lizardfang quickly lapped up several poppy seeds, desperate to get out of this panicked state and back to her duties. An eerie calm began creeping along her spine and, laying her head down, Lizardfang entrusted her well-being to the medicine cats.
---
Tonight’s murderous cat had followed Aeron's plan very carefully. They made sure to give Lizardfang a tainted bird, whose feathers easily masked the cuts made to hide poppy seeds throughout the morsel. The beaver was right; Lizardfang would panic when she couldn’t perform her deputy duties and go to the medicine cat's den for more herbs. This part, the killer had also assumed would happen. WindClan cats - so predictable and simple-minded.
The killer snuck Lizardfang out of the medicine den, being sure to not wake the she-cat or make any noise that'd draw anyone out of their den then proceeded to drag Windclan’s poor deputy through the dirtplace tunnel. The murderous cat managed to get their victim a decent distance from camp after lots of adrenaline-fueled work. Pausing to take a break, the killer turned to look at Lizardfang. Even if they had nothing in particular against Lizardfang, she was a Windclan cat, and that was enough of a reason for murder.
Huffing, they stood before grabbing Lizardfang again and dragged her towards a nearby stream. The two reached the stream side by moonhigh, the killer dropping Lizardfang’s limp form in the sand. “I’m here,” they called gruffly, waiting impatiently for a response.
Aeron noisily trudged her way forward from a nearby bush, giving the killer a quick glance before waddling over to Lizardfang. She made a contemplative sound, seemingly assessing the cat, before humming happily.
“You did it!” She whispered gleefully, reaching her forelegs out to grab the WindClan deputy's arms. “Aww, what a sleeping cutie! Thank you, I really love my logcat friend!”
“Just make sure she disappears.” The murderer growled before turning and heading back to camp.
---
Aeron placed Lizardfang beside the banks of the river, figuring she had some time to work before dealing with her. She dived into the river's water and collected her drenched twigs and sticks, then swam back over to the dam, building it back up as quickly as she could before the poppy could wear off on the gray feline.
Once her dam was looking rather complete (aside from a large, cat-sized dent at the top of the structure), Aeron swam back over to Lizardfang, who was thankfully still fast asleep. After positioning the she-cat on her back, she carried the deputy over to her dam, being sure to keep Lizardfang's head above water, then began tucking her carefully into a crevice that needed to be sealed. Patting mud and twigs around her, the beaver effectively trapped Lizardfang between well-placed branches and pinning logs. Happy with her new friend sealing the dam, Aeron got up to leave and waddled far away from the river.
The sun had fully risen by the time Lizardfang came to her senses. Peeling her eyes open, she squinted as she took in her surroundings, murmuring to herself as she tried to get up, only to realize she couldn’t. Now frightened awake, the Windclan deputy struggled as she tried to free herself from the strange wooden structure, pausing as she realized water was seeping through her fur, reaching as far up as her neck.
Lizardfang started panicking. No...no… Surely, surely this all had to be a bad dream. But the water rose higher and higher, and Lizardfang could only raise her muzzle so high. Wasting all of her energy struggling to move, Lizardfang found herself unable to fight against the rising water for very long. Soon the water reached her chin, her mouth, her nose- she started counting backwards to try and soothe herself in her imminent situation, squeezing her eyes shut as she silently waited for the inevitable.
Slowly and slowly, the she-cat stopped wriggling and breathing, and her body, once full of strength and life, became limp.
Her body was very effective at stopping water, at least.
